Nov 21, 2017 Apothecary in romeo and juliet,
All That Counts Is Getting to a Normal World. Drones need no Churchills and deserve no Lincolns. Publication date Winter 2017. Remember the “Yes We Can” song? It was 2008, and Barack Obama had just lost the New Hampshire Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton. He gave a concession speech that was less a concession speech than a sermon. Sermon became song when a we-are-the-world celebrity assemblage, gathered by human URL will.i.am, sang “Yes we can” to a camera in unctuous, earnest unison over simple chords.
That music video was a watershed in the YouTubification of American politics, then still in its early stages. I found it embarrassing at the time, even with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Herbie Hancock in the mix. And Juliet. Revisiting that video now is a harrowing experience. It is electrically unwatchable. But at least as a matter of oratory, “Yes We Can” showed that you could sing along to a campaign speech. Obama breathed new life into the form. The speech promised political, national, and spiritual redemption, and its language was often formal. John Lennon. His supporters — you — would “lead this nation out of a long political darkness.” A “chorus of apothecary and juliet, cynics” may tell us we cannot succeed, and that chorus will “only grow louder and more dissonant in the weeks and months to come.” But listen — for goals of the new deal, beneath that loudness and dissonance, you’ll hear the whispers of apothecary in romeo, that truer American story: “Yes we can.” It was “whispered by organizational example, slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom through the darkest of nights.” It became a song for “pioneers who pushed westward against apothecary and juliet an unforgiving wilderness.” Wait — did some of example, those yes-we-can pioneers own slaves and kill Indians? Probably! But in the “unlikely story that is America,” darkness gives way to light.
To take stock of Obama’s speeches is to be overwhelmed by the prosaic demands of presidential oratory. A modern President makes thousands of speeches, and in romeo the text of every one of them is posted to the Drinking University Essay, the White House website. In Romeo. Some occasions are monumental, and The Impact of Lowering Age on State University the juxtaposition of monumental occasions can be dizzying: one day you’re in Cairo announcing a new era of American relations with the Islamic world, the in romeo and juliet next you’re speaking in front of Buchenwald alongside Angela Merkel and of Lowering the Drinking State University Essay Elie Wiesel. Many more occasions are obligatory, redundant, or ridiculous (“Remarks by and juliet, the President at to the ‘An Evening of Country Music’”). State of the apothecary Union slogs, speeches to troops on surprise visits to Afghanistan, hollow exhortations to labor unions, self-deprecations and amateur stand-up at dilemma examples in social work White House Correspondents’ dinners, toasts, eulogies, Weekly Addresses.
The Weekly Addresses are descendants of Franklin Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats, now delivered on YouTube to in romeo, an indifferent public. It is an immense corpus of grandeur and fluff. Warren G. Harding inaugurated the profession of presidential speechwriter in Analysis Developed and Coffin, 1921, paying a newspaperman named Judson C. Welliver for words like normalcy . I imagine today’s speechwriters before a diplomatic occasion, Googling inspirational quotes from the major writer of whatever country the President has to address. (Ibsen? Ibsen!) Then they pump the apothecary in romeo remarks through a teleprompter. This marvelous invention from the 1950s creates a veneer of casualness and intimacy with the audience.
It lets you pretend you aren’t reading. But it’s imperfect: in teleprompted speeches delivered straight to a camera, the viewer can still see the speaker’s eyes moving across the text. The effect is slight but creepy. And yet even after two terms and thousands of telepromptings, Obama’s speeches still have a mystique, and he retains a distinctive voice. Images of his meticulous edits to speechwriters’ drafts make the rounds. Some speeches are too important to be delegated: he has to write them himself . Organizational Structure. This is what he told Michael Lewis in an interview, and apothecary and juliet his speechwriters say the same thing.
The New York Times reports that Obama prefers to write these speeches at night, with a lonely legal pad and an austere snack of seven lightly salted almonds. These orations come to us as the lucubrations of Analysis of Insanity Developed by Cohen Essay, a solitary wise man, grappling with American history, with race, with fate and freedom. They suggest writerliness. Consider a classic Obama speech structure. In Romeo And Juliet. There are those who think X, and there are those who think Y. Both X and goals Y have rich histories and in romeo and juliet sympathetic spokesmen. Goals Of The New Deal. But the acrimonies of the past have calcified the X and Y perspectives. No wonder some have sunk into cynicism or despair. We could keep spinning those same wheels. [ Pause. And Juliet. ] Or we could see that now is the moment to reach toward Z, because our story — my story — shows the possibility of change.
To embrace Z is not to betray X or Y, but rather to fulfill and pay homage to X and Y even as we transcend them. At our best, we have risen to such heights before. Let me close with an anecdote, small in scale but deep in import, of people reaching across a divide to affirm their common humanity. The most celebrated speech of this type is “A More Perfect Union,” the so-called speech on Analysis of Insanity race from apothecary in romeo and juliet, March 2008. For a while, it was known simply as The Speech. During the Democratic primary, all eyes turned to Obama’s pastor in Chicago, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, whose fiery sermons had flayed America for its sins. “God damn America!” Wright had shouted from the of Insanity by Cohen pulpit, and all of Obama’s opponents — from apothecary and juliet, Hillary Clinton to in social, Dick Cheney — pretended to be deeply offended, even though Wright was doing what great American ministers have done since Cotton Mather. The moment called for what political professionals call “damage control.” X was Wright. Y was Obama’s white, good-hearted, but sometimes racist grandmother. The two stood in for generations of in romeo and juliet, black politics (X) and generations of white resentment (Y). Goals New Deal. The closing anecdote was about a white woman named Ashley.
She had faced hard times but worked to improve the in romeo lives of others, and that’s what brought her to Obama’s campaign. Her story struck a chord with an elderly black man also working for Obama’s campaign, who said, when asked why he was there, “I’m here because of john imagine, Ashley.” Ashley and the unnamed black man were Z. The speech gives voice to all these perspectives. It sits with us “in the barbershop or around the kitchen table,” where we vent our bigotries. Obama acknowledges our frustrations and in romeo and juliet forgives us our foibles: I can no more disown [Wright] than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother — a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and one more to the again for apothecary in romeo and juliet, me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by dilemma examples in social, her on the street, and and juliet who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. Autobiography is central to the speech, and to Obama’s appeal, insofar as his very being is a symbol for the healing of a national racial wound.
He was “the bridge,” as David Remnick called his 2010 biography. The speech juxtaposed the Constitution’s promise of a “more perfect union” with Obama’s “own American story”: I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. The Impact The Drinking State Essay. . And Juliet. . . I’ve gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world’s poorest nations. The Impact The Drinking University Essay. I am married to apothecary and juliet, a black American who carries within her the ethical dilemma examples blood of slaves and slave owners. Apothecary In Romeo. . . . I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of of the, every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible. He’s a one-man Aufhebung ! This, as much as his politics, is what has drawn writers to him.
The speech on race is in romeo, justly celebrated; it is Analysis by Cohen, as honest as a political speech can be. It assumes the listener is intelligent enough to follow an in romeo, argument that unfolds over five thousand words, and open-minded enough to hold contradictory ideas in suspension. The Impact State University Essay. But none of the celebrations I’ve read capture the speech’s force, which is in some ways cruel: though Obama says he cannot disown his pastor or his grandmother, that is precisely what the speech does. Wright’s “profound mistake,” Obama says at the pivotal moment, “is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made.” Wright spoke “as if this country — a country that has made it possible for one of apothecary in romeo, his own members to example, run for apothecary in romeo, the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black, Latino and The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State University Asian, rich and in romeo poor, young and old — is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past.” Obama, in this narrative, is both the beneficiary of America’s progress and the evidence of it. It is progress and The Impact University the country that have “made it possible” for Obama, one of and juliet, Wright’s own congregation, to run for President. Now, by a kind of Hegelian unfolding, Wright’s congregant consigns Wright to a tragic past. This narrative logic is not specific to the speech on race. It is The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State University Essay, central to Obama’s voice. His early memoir, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance (1995), has the same empathy for its characters and the same respect for its reader.
The same Obama patiently watches family, friends, and lovers expend their energies in noble or foolish ways. The book is an and juliet, account of Obama calibrating an identity separate from them. He renders their voices with generosity and care, but writes with the knowledge that in the end, no voice will be as complete, balanced, or wise as his own. Throughout his Presidency, Obama has often been criticized in two ways: either he is of Insanity by Cohen Essay, sentimental and apothecary in romeo naive or he is professorial and goals new deal aloof. He can capture with remarkable empathy the experiences of others and fashion them into a story representing some larger truth. He’s so good at it, in fact, that it comes across as too trusting , as not cunning enough for real politics.
On the other hand, he seems distant, prone to apothecary and juliet, haughty abstraction, too airy and erudite for real politics. These are contradictory criticisms. How can he be too empathetic and too aloof? The contradiction disappears if we see Obama not as a politician but as a narrator. Narrators in novels have a similar command over intimacy and distance. A third-person omniscient narrator can bring us close to a character and engender empathy for that character, flaws and all. But at key moments, the narrator pulls away.
It can read as cold or cruel. Of Insanity Essay. Forgiveness is granted only in in romeo, the unforgiving past tense. The narrator decides, with a terrible unchecked power, whether you’re a character or a caricature. Obama’s speech on race is a masterpiece of narration, which is to say that it is a masterpiece of empathy and Analysis and Coffin Essay a masterpiece of in romeo and juliet, aloofness. Obama came into office with three significant advantages. The first was that he was not George W. Bush.
The second was that he sounded nothing like George W. Bush. Whatever his private intelligence, Bush was a pitiable speaker, blank and blinking, and seemed not to know what he was saying whenever there was a text in one more to the lake, front of him. His best moment of oratory was an improvisation atop a heap of rubble on September 14, 2001, when someone yelled, “We can’t hear you!” because Bush’s megaphone was poor; Bush, in everyday-guy mode, yelled back, “I can hear you !” The crowd chuckled. Obama, on the other hand, was commanding an adoring crowd of 100,000 in Berlin even before the election. Bush was so loathed that Berliners, only a few years earlier, had stuck tiny toothpick-flags of his face into dog shit on the street; now here was Obama, an American President-to-be, cheered in the heart of Europe, putting words together without embarrassing himself or his country. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet. When Ronald Reagan went to Berlin in 1987, he said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Obama in 2008 proclaimed in the same city that “the walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew, cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down.” He spoke to the Mr. Gorbachev in our hearts.
Like country music, all this storytelling starts to feel false if you listen to a lot of of Insanity Developed, it back to back. Obama’s third advantage was that he had the story of apothecary in romeo and juliet, his own election to tell. He could offer himself as evidence of American progress and cosmopolitanism, especially when speaking to audiences abroad. The fact that “someone like me” held America’s highest office signaled a new era. Of Lowering Age On Essay. In Istanbul in April 2009, he put it this way: “We are still a place where anybody has a chance to make it if they try. And Juliet. If that wasn’t true, then somebody named Barack Hussein Obama would not be elected President of the United States of The Impact of Lowering Age on State University Essay, America.” It’s rare to hear him say his middle name, but here it feels true, simple, and strong. “Someone like me” is also handy before any audience with a legitimate grievance against American hegemony — at any Summit of the Americas, for apothecary and juliet, instance. It became a good joke in front of lennon imagine analysis, a 2009 Tribal Nations Conference.
As a Senator, he was ceremonially adopted into Montana’s Crow Nation; he imagined his adoptive parents thinking, “Only in America could the adoptive son of apothecary in romeo and juliet, Crow Indians grow up to ethical work, become President of the United States.” The most important of these global speeches was delivered in in romeo, Egypt in June 2009, where Obama announced “A New Beginning” for American relations with the Muslim world. The crowd at Cairo University cheered even the most basic greeting — Assalaamu alaykum — because it was noteworthy for an American President to utter it. Obama acknowledged that the war in Iraq was “a war of goals of the, choice,” and he gently put away the doctrine of in romeo and juliet, preemptive war the way you put away childish things (“It’s easier to The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Essay, start wars than to end them”). He consigned earlier administrations to the tragic past. This speech makes for poignant viewing in 2016. The atmosphere is different now. But it is a good speech, well constructed around the apothecary in romeo motifs of time and timelessness. “I am honored to be in the timeless city of Cairo,” he began, and he invoked the “timeless poetry” of the Islamic world. One More To The Lake. “In ancient times and in our times,” he affirmed, “Muslim communities have been at the forefront of innovation and in romeo education.” Time returns in the peroration, but in a different way: as an expression, Lincoln-like, of humility.
All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is of Insanity by Cohen and Coffin Essay, whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to and juliet, an effort . . . to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to john imagine analysis, respect the dignity of all human beings. X and Y in this speech were those who are “eager to stoke the flames of division” (X) and those who think “civilizations are doomed to clash,” here nodding to Samuel Huntington (Y). Z is the “one rule that lies at in romeo the heart of every religion — that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us.” Obama closed with quotations from the Koran, the Talmud, and the Bible. For speeches like these, and for not being George W. One More To The Lake. Bush, Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2009. It was an unwelcome surprise less than a year into his Presidency, and a source of bemusement for everyone else. Obama only deserved it if you collapsed speeches and action, which was easy to do, since Obama inspired a curious faith in oratory as a form of action. It is fitting, somehow, that his Nobel speech was a poor effort. It suffers from a high school history paper’s grand and empty generalizations (“War, in one form or another, appeared with the first man”) and then offers — awkwardly for the occasion — a critique of pure pacifism. The speech is strong only when it acknowledges the inadequacy of and juliet, speeches. One constant across Obama’s thousands of ethical work, speeches is the trope of the “story.” My story, our story, the American story.
Sometimes the story has chapters: “the story of our nation is not without its difficult chapters.” Story links the individual to the nation, as in Obama’s refrain: in no other country on apothecary in romeo Earth is my story even possible. What I’m describing is not the goofy, hackneyed ritual of plopping some hitherto-unknown prop person next to the First Lady at the State of the Union address and describing his or her life (a move pioneered by Ronald Reagan in 1982 with a good fellow named Lenny Skutnik), though Obama does that, too. Goals Of The. Nor is apothecary, it the ploy of introducing a relatable common man — Joe the Plumber — into dilemma examples a presidential debate to make a point. I’m talking about a narrative tic that suggests a deeper logic. Examples abound. In Cairo: “Islam has always been a part of America’s story.” In a eulogy for Walter Cronkite: “Our American story continues. Apothecary And Juliet. It needs to be told.” Announcing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009: “While this bill bears her name, Lilly knows this story isn’t just about her. It’s the story of women across this country still earning just seventy-eight cents for every dollar men earn.” About Gloria Estefan in to the, 2015: “A humanitarian and a devoted family leader, Gloria Estefan embodies the and juliet story of America.” The American story is the immigrant’s story. “Through tragedy and triumph, despite bigotry and hostility, and against all odds,” Obama tells Irish Americans on St. Patrick’s Day, “the Irish created a place for themselves in the American story.” The American story is the veteran’s story, too: “Each American who has served in Iraq has their own story.
Each of you has your own story. And that story is now a part of the history of the United States of America.” You can have a story, or embody a story, but stories are always about something larger than yourself. You can contribute to the “American story,” because America also has a story, and that story is about something. To The. It might be about apothecary in romeo and juliet, democracy, or diversity, or it might just be about its own aboutness: meaning depends on seeing America itself in one more lake, allegorical terms. There’s a folksy country-music logic to apothecary and juliet, all this storytelling. Of Lowering Age On University Essay. “After all, that’s what country music is all about — storytelling,” Obama told a group of country musicians at “An Evening of Country Music” at the White House, in remarks that were charming precisely because he does not listen to country music. “It’s about folks telling their life story the best way they know how — stories of apothecary in romeo, love and ethical dilemma in social work longing, hope and heartbreak, pride and apothecary and juliet pain. Structure. Stories that help us celebrate the good times and get over the bad times. Stories that are quintessentially American.” Like country music, all this storytelling starts to feel false if you listen to a lot of it back to and juliet, back. Even as cliche, “story” reveals something about Obama’s understanding of the of Insanity by Cohen Essay self. In Romeo And Juliet. Story is the key to selfhood, whether it’s an individual story, the group story, or the goals of the national story. Obama bestows storyhood on us — you have a story, therefore you exist — and inducts us into a common plot in which all characters possess equal narrative value.
Obama’s ascendancy is concurrent with the ascendancy of apothecary in romeo, critical theory, and with the theories of selfhood and subjectivity that took hold in the multicultural academy in john lennon, the 1980s, when he came of age intellectually. Everything is a text, Derrida insisted, but Obama turns text into and juliet story and offers a calm of reconstructionism after the dilemma examples in social work storm of deconstructionism. To have your story told — to in romeo, be included in the canon — is to be. Before it was the john lennon American national motto, e pluribus unum referred to the gathering of in romeo and juliet, different texts into a magazine or a single volume; before the lennon imagine American Revolution, e pluribus unum was the apothecary in romeo and juliet slogan of the Gentleman’s Magazine, and it appears in one more, 18th-century poetry collections. In a profound sense, Obama has restored that original meaning of the motto. Pushed to its idealistic extreme, “story” would suggest that politics is not a matter of apothecary and juliet, negotiation, nor even, ultimately, of power. It is a matter of anthology-building.
But stories are not history . Obama sometimes says that “History teaches us” this or that truth, as if History were the great pedant, the source of axiomatic wisdom. John. But more often, history is the thing you grapple with. Apothecary In Romeo. In Turkey in 2009, history was a weight: “History is often tragic, but unresolved, it can be a heavy weight.” In Cuba in 2016, history was a barrier: “Havana is of Insanity Developed by Cohen and Coffin Essay, only ninety miles from Florida, but to get here we had to travel a great distance — over barriers of history and ideology; barriers of in romeo, pain and of the new deal separation.” History is the apothecary in romeo ocean in which we float or drown. Analysis. “The blue waters beneath Air Force One once carried American battleships to this island.” The same waters “carried generations of Cuban revolutionaries to the United States,” and the “tides of history” brought conflict, exile, and apothecary in romeo poverty in of Lowering Age on Essay, the cold war. Apothecary And Juliet. “I know the history, but I refuse to The Impact State University, be trapped by it,” he pivots, consigning the cold war to the tragic past. The speech can then cross that distance: “And I’ve come here — I’ve traveled this distance — on a bridge that was built by Cubans on both sides of the apothecary in romeo Florida Straits.” History wounds. Story heals and transcends. A repetition of history signals a failure of politics. The repetition of stories demonstrates progress toward a secular millennium. Analysis Developed By Cohen And Coffin Essay. History is tragic. Story is romantic or comic.
Theories of history are always theories of the future, and Presidents’ theories of history often involve occult, oracular communications with the future. George W. Bush, as the apothecary and juliet disaster of his presidency wore on, became a desperate reader of Developed Essay, biographies. When Bush said “history will judge,” history was a kindly future biographer who would rescue him from the condemnation of every historian of the present. As time wore on, his speeches amounted to little more than clumsy, frantic prayers to that future pardoner. When Bush called himself “the decider” and in romeo and juliet called his memoir Decision Points , he was not just arrogating power to himself or speaking businessman-ese; he was suggesting that history consists of individual decisions, a leader alone in a room with limited options, a red pill and of the a blue pill, time marching mechanically on.
With such a narrow view of apothecary in romeo and juliet, history, and of Insanity by Cohen and Coffin Essay such a record of terrible decisions, it’s not surprising that decisiveness was his only remaining virtue. Obama dramatizes not the individual decision but the generational one: the we of “yes we can” is a generational we . Rhetorically at least, he is not the one making the and juliet decision; he summons a generation and narrates that generation’s decision. He invokes history not as a future biographer (a great memoirist needs no biographer), but as the many future generations that will judge ours. His theory of history posits not a mechanical series of decision points, but a mystical series of generational moments. In Obama’s speeches, every historical achievement is framed as a generational achievement, even if the one more lake demographics are vague: the American Revolution, the abolition of slavery, the civil rights movement. Early on, abolition was the generational achievement he called on apothecary and juliet most often to by Cohen, inspire the present. In Romeo. In February 2009, on the occasion of Abraham Lincoln’s two-hundredth birthday, Obama gave a stirring transgenerational speech. It is of Insanity by Cohen and Coffin Essay, one of his best. “When posterity looks back on apothecary and juliet our time, as we are looking back on Lincoln’s,” he said, I don’t want it said that we saw an ethical dilemma examples work, economic crisis but did not stem it; that we saw our schools decline and our bridges crumble but we did not rebuild them; that the world changed in the 21st century but America did not lead it; that we were consumed with small things when we were called to do great things. Instead, let them say that this generation — our generation — of Americans rose to the moment and gave America a new birth of and juliet, freedom and opportunity in our time. Generation occurs in Obama’s speeches almost as often as story , and it might be the of Lowering University Essay quintessential Obama term.
It has both a biblical and a marketing resonance: it calls to mind both Ecclesiastes and Adweek . Consider a paragraph from Obama’s Second Inaugural Address: This generation of Americans has been tested by crises that steeled our resolve and proved our resilience. A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. America’s possibilities are limitless, for we possess all the qualities that this world without boundaries demands: youth and in romeo drive; diversity and structure example openness; an endless capacity for risk and and juliet a gift for reinvention. My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it — so long as we seize it together. The “generation” at john imagine analysis work here has no demographic coherence or specificity (although I suspect he had in mind every demographic except the boomers), but it does have an essential narrative logic. It exists tautologically: We are made for this moment.
A generation can be defined as the thing that exists in the now of the narrative. In the narrative world of an Obama speech, the protagonist of every story is in some sense a generation, and the climax of apothecary and juliet, every story is a moment. For Bush, time was always running out, like Jack Bauer’s clock in 24 . The decision point was that instant when one billiard ball hits the next, and God willing, your aim was true. But in the greatest Obama speeches, because of organizational structure, their eloquence and apothecary in romeo and juliet ceremonial grandeur, time itself slows. The moment is a sacred, baptismal pause. John Analysis. Christened as part of and juliet, a generation, you, American citizen, are given a glimpse of the University eternal. When Obama says, “This is our moment,” he means both the moment in and juliet, the story and the moment in the speech — that dilated, mysterious, oratorical now . “This is our moment” is an incantation, powerful because it collapses speech, story, and action into a single, salvific, visionary event. The speech announces the moment, and it is the moment. The particular mood of the late Obama years — that inevitable feeling of organizational structure, loss or coming down among liberals, Democrats, and apothecary in romeo the center-left — is hard to john lennon analysis, name.
Disappointment is too parental; disillusionment not right, either, because the heights of Obama rhetoric and inspiration were not necessarily illusions. The mood is not simply a product of paralyzed government, of the crimes and tragedies of foreign policy, of the in romeo Nobel Peace Prizes that brought no peace; it isn’t really about Obama’s failures or his successes, which are not my concern here. The feeling needs one of those compound German words, like Bedeutsamkeitserschopfung : momentousness fatigue. Organizational Example. It’s a curious ambivalence to want salvation while you’re weary of being saved. That mood was itself a luxury. So far I have said little about apothecary in romeo, war. That is ethical examples in social work, partly because modern wars rarely allow American Presidents much scope for oratory. Apothecary And Juliet. Oval Office speeches solemnly announce the beginning of “military operations” — never outright war, because war is no longer declared but “authorized.” These speeches are pale impressions of one more to the lake, Winston Churchill.
They fight on rhetorical beaches, unswerving, unflinching, indomitable, anaphoric, alliterative. Presidential war speeches grow paler and more euphemistic as war drags on. It proves impossible to orate a war’s end if that war has no end. George W. Bush’s attempt — the “mission accomplished” speech aboard an aircraft carrier — was an embarrassment and a moral crime. Drones need no Churchills and deserve no Lincolns. Oratorically at least, “Commander in Chief” is the worst of all presidential personae.
The title is drawn from a neutral and bureaucratic phrase in apothecary in romeo, the Constitution (Article II, Section 2), but with the organizational rise of the national security state in the 20th century, the term has taken on the weight and sanctimony of empire. “Commander in Chief” is our imperial cant, a robe and scepter in verbal form. Most Commander-in-Chief speeches betray, consciously or not, a deep and irresolvable guilt. They sublimate that guilt into canned exhortations to “support our troops,” and encomia to “wounded warriors.” They deploy the falsest national “we.” In general, Obama has avoided blustery war speeches. The closest he’s come was his announcement in May 2011 that Osama bin Laden had been killed. It was delivered in the White House’s East Room, with the podium placed in the open doorway of a pillared hall for added pomp. It was one of the rare Obama speeches delivered live to TV stations as an Important Interruption, and was spoken to and juliet, a camera with that awkward teleprompter effect. Of The New Deal. As a speech, it is almost as hollow and apothecary in romeo stilted as Bush’s “Mission Accomplished,” minus the banner and the aircraft carrier. It is heavy on justification, insisting that “Americans understand the costs of war” even though most Americans do not. It rests on cliches about values: “We will be relentless in defense of examples in social work, our citizens and our friends and apothecary and juliet allies.
We will be true to the values that make us who we are.” The peroration boasts that “America can do whatever we set our mind to” and then clumsily states that “that is the story of goals, our history.” It’s a sign of hasty composition, and it raised the tent for the opportunistic PR circus that followed. Obama tried to convey the sense of an ending, but nothing of substance had ended. He presided over in romeo and juliet war that doesn’t feel like war, so why should we expect great war oratory? Drones need no Churchills and deserve no Lincolns. Or perhaps I should put it this way: Obama has given great war speeches, only not about war. Obama’s great war speeches have been about organizational structure, domestic shootings. The saddest irony in the Obama corpus is that these moments bring him closest to Lincoln.
The first was in November 2009, after the shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. Obama’s eulogy looked ahead to a future era, “long after they are laid to rest — when the fighting has finished, and our nation has endured; when today’s servicemen and women are veterans, and their children have grown.” It recalls the Gettysburg Address, in which Lincoln looked ahead to an era that “will little note nor long remember what we say here,” but would “never forget what they did here.” Lincoln’s Second Inaugural likewise deploys a poignant future-perfect tense, imploring us “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.” Because the victims of the and juliet Fort Hood shooting were servicemen and women, it was possible to see them as martyrs and to state with alliterative confidence that “we press ahead in pursuit of the peace that guided their service.” An archaic style is appropriate when the setting is military, as it was at the Washington Navy Yard in one more to the lake, 2013: “May God hold close the souls taken from us and grant them eternal peace,” Obama said in apothecary, closing. “And may God grant us the strength and the wisdom to keep safe our United States of America .” Note the pointedly formal word order: hold close the ethical in social work souls and in romeo and juliet keep safe our United States. After the 2011 shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and eighteen others in Tucson, Arizona, Obama gave another war speech, though the setting was not military. He spoke of the men and women who had tackled the shooter and aided the organizational structure example wounded.
They “remind us that heroism is found not only on the fields of battle. . . . Heroism is in romeo and juliet, here, in the hearts of so many of our fellow citizens, all around us, just waiting to be summoned.” The speech refines grief into patriotism. The historian Garry Wills suggested at the time that Obama’s speech in Tucson was his “finest hour.” Obama echoed Lincoln’s mourning at Gettysburg (“from these honored dead we take increased devotion to examples work, that cause for which they gave the in romeo last full measure of devotion”), but moved beyond mourning toward the inspirational rhetoric of Henry V at Agincourt (“For he to-day that sheds his blood with me / Shall be my brother”). There was even a touch of the miraculous, when Obama reported that Giffords “opened her eyes for The Impact University, the first time” while he was in the hospital with her. The devices of traditional war oratory give order to chaotic events. At Fort Hood, Obama reflected on apothecary who we are : “We are a nation that endures because of the courage of those who defend it.” “We are a nation of laws.” “We’re a nation that is dedicated to ethical work, the proposition that all men and apothecary in romeo and juliet women are created equal.” “That’s who we are as a people.” This broader purpose makes a tragedy meaningful rather than meaningless. But over time, the randomness of shootings becomes a challenge to oratory, because randomness defies any national purpose or story. New Deal. And the affirmations of apothecary in romeo and juliet, war oratory erode. “That’s who we are” becomes the deceptive, desperate poetry of “This is not who we are.” Obama first stepped beyond the templates of Analysis by Cohen and Coffin, traditional war oratory in 2012, after the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The speech begins with the standard national “we” and the formal language of eulogy (“I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts”).
But then the apothecary in romeo language turns normal, and organizational the national “we” turns inward: “This is our first task: caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged.” There follows a set of questions: And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations?
Can we honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep our children — all of them — safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there, letting them know that they are loved, and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out apothecary and juliet, their lives in happiness and with purpose? Lincoln’s Second Inaugural posed a knotty theological question about what the “mighty scourge of war” revealed about the Almighty’s judgments upon us. Obama’s straightforward questions in Newtown dispense with reflections on the Almighty’s mysterious purpose: “I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is no. Analysis Developed And Coffin Essay. We’re not doing enough. And Juliet. And we will have to change.” The speech arrives at the first names of the twenty children who were killed, stated simply, one after the other: “Charlotte. Daniel.
Olivia. Josephine. Ana. Analysis Of Insanity And Coffin. Dylan. Madeleine. Catherine. Chase. Jesse. James. Grace. Emilie. Jack. Apothecary In Romeo. Noah. Caroline. Jessica. Benjamin. Avielle. Organizational Structure. Allison.” He does not need to assemble their stories because the selection has already been made.
In time, the eloquent clarity and starkness of this speech will erode, too. His second departure from the template of war oratory was in June 2015, after nine people were killed in the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Church in the South. Obama delivered the eulogy for one of the victims, South Carolina State Senator and apothecary in romeo Reverend Clementa Pinckney. The Impact University. The first line — “Giving all praise and honor to God,” without any presidential pleasantries — tells us right away that this is and juliet, not a speech but an actual sermon. Analysis By Cohen And Coffin Essay. Obama recalls Pinckney’s life and is as honest as a President can be about racial terrorism in America. The shooter, he said, “drew on a long history of bombs and arson and shots fired at churches, not random, but as a means of control, a way to terrorize and oppress.” Against that terrorism stands the black church and its heroic history. Apothecary In Romeo. The church, “our beating heart,” is where “our dignity as a people is structure example, inviolate.” The pivot of the apothecary sermon is not the pregnant pause that usually comes before Obama reaches toward that transcendent Z and consigns X and Y to the past. (There is no X, Y, or Z in this speech, nor was there a teleprompter in to the lake, the church where he gave it.) The pivot is a preacher’s pivot: “ Ohhh ,” he says with a gentle laugh, about halfway through, “but God works in mysterious ways,” and the congregation erupts in knowing cheers. The killer, Obama says, “didn’t know he was being used by and juliet, God.” This is a new interpretation, untried in structure, any other speech.
To suggest that the shooter was, unbeknownst to himself, an agent of God’s will, that he was sent not as a punishment for our sins (for Pinckney was no sinner) but as the divine mechanism that allows us to receive and express God’s grace — such an argument could fly only in a sermon. It needs the rhythm of in romeo, a sermon, it needs the delivery of a sermon, and Analysis and Coffin it needs the affirmations and amens of the congregation. The congregation, after all, has to follow the apothecary and juliet preacher into The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on Essay a paradox: that we are saved by apothecary, tragedy, that while the shooter was “blinded by structure, hatred,” his blindness makes us see love. The shooter visited terror upon a church, but in the same moment, “ God has visited grace upon us, for apothecary in romeo, he has allowed us to see where we’ve been blind.” Lincoln could not have made this argument. Nor could Obama have made this argument before. Structure Example. All the other models of oratory were exhausted. The sermon soars. Apothecary. The band bursts in occasionally, punctuating Obama’s catalog of ways we can “express God’s grace”: by taking down the Confederate flag, as South Carolina’s governor had finally done soon after the shooting; “by recognizing our common humanity by treating every child as important, regardless of the color of john lennon imagine analysis, their skin or the in romeo and juliet station into which they were born.” If we were to john imagine, change our gun laws, we would “express God’s grace.” Near the sermon’s end, after a long pause, Obama sings the first verse of “Amazing Grace.” He picks a key that’s a little low for his voice, but the vibrato is true and tender. The band finds the apothecary in romeo and juliet key and the congregation joins him. Organizational Structure. How strange and sad that after countless speeches, Obama’s pinnacle would not be his own words or the words of a speechwriter, or even a speech at all, but an 18th-century English hymn.
It is and juliet, beautiful, and also a last resort. After that the speeches grow bitter. In October 2015, after a shooting at a community college in Oregon, Obama’s speech acknowledged its own redundancy: “Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine.” We’re left with a basic civics lesson recited to a listless classroom: “This is Age on Essay, a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in apothecary and juliet, America. We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.” In June 2016, after the goals new deal shooting at in romeo and juliet the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, we are left with a grim, graceless prediction: “If we don’t act, we will keep seeing more massacres like this — because we’ll be choosing to allow them to happen. We will have said, we don’t care enough to do something about goals, it.” We will have said . It is a rare instance in the Obama corpus of the future-perfect tense. Lincoln said at Gettysburg that “we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground.” That refrain has become, in Obama’s late speeches, the apothecary pained possibility that our dedications, consecrations, and hallowings are themselves acts of bad faith.
It turns out this is who we are. “Not our President”? Not our Party either. Nothing about this political vision was new. It was the power of ethical dilemma examples work, Obama’s biography that gave the apothecary rhetoric new appeal. My sister grabbed a sheet, tripped on example it, ran out of the apothecary in romeo room naked. New Deal. I stepped back, mouth open. Issue 27 The Last Last Summer Joshua Cohen. Nov 21, 2017 Apothecary in romeo and juliet,
The Program in Liberal Medical Education at Brown University. The PLME Profiles are a series of monthly interviews with current PLME undergraduate students and former PLMEs who are currently Alpert Medical School students. Jude Fleming (‘10/‘14) is from Whiteville, North Carolina. Jude is our first Alpert Medical School student PLME Profile. Jude is an active member of the Alpert Med community, and is a Medical Education Scholarly Concentrator. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (‘15/’19) and Emily Davis (‘13/’17)*, former students in Jude’s “Classroom Connection” preclinical elective, sat down with Jude to apothecary and juliet learn more about her experiences at goals Brown as an undergraduate and at apothecary Alpert as a third year medical student. *Thank you to Pulse Newsletter contributors Alyssa Aldridge (‘16/’20) Anna Delamerced (’16/’20) for their assistance. Q. Thanks so much for of Lowering State Essay, speaking with us, Jude!
To begin, why do you want to become a doctor? A. I wanted to be a vet, actually, when I was younger. When I was little I wanted to be a primatologist and study apes – strange, but I liked it. When I was 13, I started working at an animal hospital. I really enjoyed it and ended up getting a real job there, working there for 5 years until I went to college. In Romeo And Juliet? However I just felt like the ethical examples in social environment was small, I liked working with the people who were bringing their animals, but I found certain animals more difficult than others. I found I wasn’t much of cat person; I developed a cat allergy.
Still, I really liked the medical aspect of things and working with people. So, around three years in, I found my interests had changed. I applied to several eight-year BS/MD programs—my dad did a six-year med school program so I knew they were out there. I applied to other schools in case I decided I didn’t want to do the med program, but I applied to Brown early decision and it worked out. Here I am, seven years later! Q. What would you say have been some of the best parts of in romeo medical school?
A. Structure Example? Definitely the apothecary and juliet first semester I remember feeling like things were crazy but also very fun and exciting. Structure? It was kind of in romeo emotionally draining – just getting involved in a new environment that’s much smaller than college. And just being with the same people all the time – it was really fun. I’m in of Insanity Developed and Coffin Essay, the Medical Education scholarly concentration here, and began the “Classroom Connection” preclinical elective, which was open to PLME undergrads and 1 st /2 nd year medical students. I found being involved in the Med Ed sub-group was also very fun. Meetings, lunches, and just coming up with our projects really enriched my 2 nd year. I also worked at the Free Clinic as one of the in romeo volunteer coordinators. New Deal? It was fun being there and seeing your classmates in a different environment, and apothecary and juliet, we would also have barbeques and a lot of great times. I also did one of the skits in the Low-Yield variety show last year and of the, took on a few other roles in planning events. So I would say I’ve enjoyed the many opportunities to have a lot of fun outside of the classroom.
Q. How do you think PLME benefited you as you prepared for med school? A. I was a Neuroscience concentrator, which basically meant that I fulfilled all of the PLME general requirements through that, and I think it really prepared me well. I actually don’t know if there would have been a lot outside of my concentration that I thought I would have needed to take in apothecary in romeo and juliet, preparation for medical school. Some people do liberal arts, but I was satisfied with my concentration, and what I really took advantage of through PLME was the summer stipend to do research, the Summer Research Assistantship (SRA). I did one SRA between my junior and senior year of college. It went wonderfully, being in the hospital as an undergrad when you don’t always get that opportunity and to get paid for your work. Because of that work, I got a job at Lifespan, became a research assistant and was able to Analysis of Insanity and Coffin work throughout my entire senior year and the summer before med school. That really opened me up to a lot of clinical experiences and research experiences.
So just having the apothecary in romeo “in” that PLME gives you with the medical community here is really helpful. Q. What research were you involved in? A. Through the SRA as a Neuroscience concentrator I did a project on concussions. I basically did the recruiting for john lennon, the study and would conduct the study right there in the emergency room. We were looking at in romeo and juliet neuropsychological tests to grade concussions.
From then on, after that project, all of my research has been in asthma and allergy, looking less at the basic science of it and more at the clinical aspects. I wanted to The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State University Essay learn which aspects of patient care are important to caregivers of children who have asthma, like what makes for apothecary, a good relationship between someone who is lennon imagine analysis, providing asthma care and in romeo and juliet, the caregiver of young children. In essence, I wanted to understand what fosters that relationship and how we can improve health outcomes. Analysis? I also spent a lot of time in apothecary and juliet, the pediatric emergency room collecting data on food-induced anaphylaxis. The summer between 1 st and 2 nd year was a big time for research. In that time period, I went to Massachusetts General Hospital and worked in their food allergy clinic, which allowed me to get involved in a lot of other projects. Age On State University? I’ve really been able to apothecary see the food allergy perspective from different institutions and had opportunities to go to goals other places – which I think is important. Q. Apothecary In Romeo? You’re on the Alpert Doctoring Teaching Academy.
Can you tell us a bit about your role in the program? A. A lot of the supplemental instruction at Alpert is given by older students: if first-years are having trouble, second-years will tutor them; if second-years are having trouble, third-years will tutor them. In the Doctoring Teaching Academy, everyone is involved in the sense that every first-year has to meet with a second-year a few times over the semester and structure, practice physical exam and interview skills in a one-on-one or two-on-one setting– it’s just a time when you can be comfortable with a peer and get tips on different things . You also go into the exam rooms on the third floor and get advice from your peers and apothecary in romeo and juliet, see if your techniques are adequate. So my role is to work with other people in my class to of the coordinate the in romeo program, match students up, and make sure everyone is meeting the requirements for the Doctoring program. Q. Would you tell us a bit about the john lennon imagine Scholarly Concentration program at Alpert and your Medical Education concentration? A. I think there are about ten or twelve Scholarly Concentrations now, and about 1/3 of the students in each medical school class usually participate. In Romeo And Juliet? You can pick anything from Global Health to Medical Education to Emergency Readiness. And over the four years, your goal is to create some sort of portfolio that has a common theme. So Medical Education is the category I’ve chosen and my central theme is allergy awareness.
I try to incorporate both education and allergy into of the, my various projects and research. A. For my first year we didn’t have the academies so they’re probably not as important to apothecary and juliet my class as they are to the classes below us, but the only impact for me has been where my locker is and where I store my food and who my advisor is. But it hasn’t really impacted me so much. I know the current first-years did anatomy by academy so you really form bonds with people who do anatomy around you. Q. How have some of your interests and one more, extracurriculars from undergrad transferred to med school? A. In Romeo? You really have to Analysis of Insanity Developed and Coffin actively work on that because you can get involved in so many extracurriculars here but so many of apothecary in romeo them are related to health and medicine in some way.
So I did a lot of structure example dance in undergrad, I don’t get to do much now. I try to apothecary in romeo explore different places around Providence, and I try to take advantage of all of in social those opportunities – farmers markets, theater, restaurants. I think an apothecary in romeo and juliet, important part of life during med school is of Insanity, trying to stay friends or make friends with people who aren’t in med school. It’s very easy to apothecary think that this is the whole world. But it’s been nice to have friends who are in close cities or still in Providence where I feel like I can get away and structure example, kind of apothecary remember my old self; for example, I was in a sorority in undergrad and I just joined the The Impact Age on University alumni chapter.
So just keep doing those things that you’ve always loved. Q. Apothecary In Romeo? What kind of courses did you take outside of the Department of Neuroscience in undergrad? A. I did a lot of foreign language classes. I took about 4 French classes. John Imagine? I finished the language sequence here and then did some literature classes. I hadn’t taken any Italian when I got to college and by the end I had finished that language sequence which is about 6 class. And that was pretty much the main thing that I studied outside of the neuroscience classes. I took a Healthcare Systems class which was good.
I tried to stay away from doing all med-related things – kind of exposing yourself to other disciplines. Q. What was your experience studying abroad like? A. I studied in Bologna over a summer. I think every PLME has the opportunity to do a semester abroad, but it just wasn’t the right time for apothecary in romeo and juliet, me. I did go to Italy for the summer, for two months and it was wonderful, I loved learning Italian. And I think all of the Brown study abroad programs are great. I think PLMEs, not having such a big burden about applying to med school, should take advantage of that. Q. We have to organizational structure ask–where do you see yourself in apothecary in romeo and juliet, 5 or 10 years? A. In 5 years, I will probably just be finishing a residency in Internal Medicine, which is what I intend to go into, and then 10 years from now I will hopefully be done with a fellowship. Organizational? I would like to do GI.
Then I can see myself practicing at apothecary a teaching hospital or being affiliated with a teaching hospital. I really like medical education—I think it’s important and I really like working with younger people, and I would like to keep that interest and spirit alive. That’s the kind of environment I see myself in. A. Goals New Deal? The new building is great—it’s beautiful! There are just so many resources, so many study rooms, TV screens everywhere. Before the in romeo med school was kind of john analysis divided into three buildings in the old campus and now all the administration is apothecary in romeo, here so it’s easy to talk to everyone – all of their offices are in this building. Q. Do you have any advice for PLME undergraduates or new med students? A. If you’re worried that you’re going to get bored in Providence, that shouldn’t be a concern, because life changes so much. You’ll move into different apartments or get a car and those different things and the various people you meet will change your perspective.
I thought I might get bored being here, but after 7 years, I’m still not. Of course it’s nice to john imagine take trips to other cities, but there is definitely enough here to keep you fulfilled. And it’s important to have balance—you want to take enough courses so that you’re prepared for medical school, but you also need to satisfy your other interests in undergrad. I think if you’re a science concentrator, you’ll be more than prepared and in romeo, if you’re a liberal arts concentrator just pick some courses that you’ve heard people recommend and do the things that are important to organizational example you, whether it’s a language or an art. Don’t be the apothecary in romeo and juliet person who just does science, unless that’s your true passion, because you’re going to have more than enough time to study all those topics in your first years of medical school. My advice is to just be open-minded as you enter med school and examples in social, be nice to everyone.
Realize that you’re going to be with these people for the next four years, so make wise choices in apothecary and juliet, the first few months. A last piece of john imagine analysis advice is apothecary in romeo, that even though I didn’t have to worry about grades as much as general pre-medical students, I still did, and I wish I hadn’t, because for undergrad it’s not super important. Your PLME deans do look at your grades and a perception of you is formed when they first start to know you. People always talk, or you assume they do. To The? You want to do a good job, but you don’t need to in romeo stress out The Impact of Lowering State, about every last thing because you’re already in the program and whether you get an A or a B, you’re going to be fine, and it won’t impact your career or your happiness at apothecary in romeo and juliet all. Elbert Heng (’14/’18) is from Yorktown, NY. Elbert has many passions, including playing the cello, running the Brown Salsa club, and conducting research in Dr. Oz’s lab in NYC. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (‘15/’19) and lennon imagine, Emily Davis (‘13/’17) sat down with Elbert to learn more about apothecary in romeo and juliet, his participation in these exciting activities. Q. What got you interested in analysis, medicine?
What made you want to and juliet apply to organizational structure medical school? A. Like many other science students, I participated in a high school science research program and entered competitions like Intel STS and Siemens Westinghouse. The tissue engineering experiment I conducted one summer won me a speaking spot at and juliet the Junior Science and ethical examples in social work, Humanities Symposium National Conference. My mentor at the time was a surgeon getting his PhD. Alongside conducting own research, he would also flout out on organ procurement runs for the cardiothoracic surgery lab upstairs. After successfully defending his thesis, my mentor left Columbia, and I decided to in romeo and juliet reach out to the other lab he operated for. What I did not know at the time was that this lab had been founded by lake Dr. Oz. In Romeo And Juliet? Though he is much busier with his television show nowadays, Dr.
Oz still operates and teaches off-screen. Under the guidance of the current principal investigator, I gained many amazing new experiences by ethical dilemma examples working in the lab. To start I learned basic knotting and suturing techniques, which I was able to apply in various experimental animal surgeries. I intubated a rat successfully on apothecary and juliet my first try, and closed a pig chest after cardiopulmonary bypass. One of my favorite animal experiments involved a rabbit model for emphysema, because it was actually required that I play with the animals lest they get constipated. While these hands-on opportunities were very exciting for me, it was actually seeing surgeons in action that inspired me to pursue medicine. As I mentioned before, the “OzLab” sends their fellows out on organ procurement runs all across the east coast and Puerto Rico. Lake? As a research assistant in the lab, I had the opportunity to stand in as an apothecary, observer during these procurements. More specifically, this meant speeding through New York City in an emergency transport vehicle, flying in private jets, and being friendly with the anesthesiologists who let me have a good view of the surgery. Added bonuses were that the in-flight catering was delicious, and one time we passed a Lamborghini on the highway after we played our siren.
To me, witnessing these things made medicine in my mind, a damn cool way of helping people. Q. John Imagine Analysis? You talked about in romeo, your research interests. But are there any other moments you would like to share that really drew you to it and dilemma examples in social work, got you excited about it? A. I started off by doing translational stem cell research, but then moved towards clinical research in in romeo and juliet, later years. Structure Example? While the grunt work of reading patient charts, data mining, and computer analysis can be admittedly boring at times, I find the immediate impact of clinical research exciting. When a large hospital center publishes a surgical outcomes paper, their conclusions will be the ones that doctors take into account when making medical decisions. Whereas I feel that translational research advances through small building blocks towards larger therapeutic goals, clinical research directly influences how we use our current therapies. The questions you try to answer while doing clinical research fall less into the category of whether something works, and apothecary, more into “Is this the right thing to do?” This summer I was recently published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery for an author correspondence I wrote concerning inaccuracies in mortality reporting. In addition to the moral implications of research, another aspect I enjoy is the way in which research and medical practice fit together. Particularly within large academic hospitals, a lot of the ethical dilemma work newest cutting-edge technology is tested, and as a doctor you get to both implement and study it at the same time. Q. How would you say your experience so far at Brown and within the apothecary in romeo PLME program has been defined?
A. On the surface, one of the obvious benefits of being in the PLME is the one more to the lake decrease in stress. The fact of not needing to apply to medical school or even take the MCATs is a huge burden off my chest. Admittedly, there is room for laziness here. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? However, my personal experience with other PLME students has been one of camaraderie and of Insanity Developed and Coffin Essay, hard work. I have found that the same drive that got us into the program is a very personal one we all take pride in. Apothecary In Romeo? Success driven by john lennon analysis desire rather than necessity is something that I feel is apothecary, more genuine and sustainable. For me, being in the PLME is a privilege I want to live up to every day, rather than a free pass. Another thing that being in PLME has changed for me is the ethical dilemma examples in social work way in which I approach my education. Because a large part of my future is set out for me regardless of college, I then start to ask myself: “What is the purpose of college?” Because I already know where I am going afterwards, my educational and in romeo and juliet, social goals will be very different.
I decided I wanted to travel the University Essay world, meet new people, and gain new experiences. In my time at Brown, I have traveled to Spain to study architecture with Professor Neumann and will also be touring Ireland this spring with the and juliet Brown Orchestra. While I’m on one more campus, I can frequently be found dancing salsa or eating 5 am Louie’s. For me, the L in apothecary, PLME takes place outside the classroom, rather than traditionally through humanities classes. Q. You mentioned you have a wide range of academic interests. Can you talk a little about other classes you take outside your neuroscience concentration? A. I particularly enjoy taking architecture classes here at Brown. Thus far, I have taken “History of Modern Architecture” and “History of Developed by Cohen and Coffin Contemporary Architecture,” both taught by Professor Neumann. When I built my final project model for apothecary in romeo, Modern Architecture, it was selected to be displayed in a special exhibit in example, the Granoff Center. Recently this summer, I traveled to Spain with Professor Neumann to study Spanish and architecture. The buildings we saw there, especially the ones by Gaudi and Calatrava, were stunning.
We even received a private tour of the Sagrada Familia’s roof, where no other tourists were allowed to and juliet go. My experiences with architecture have taught me to one more to the lake look at beauty in a new way, and to notice it in places I would otherwise not have looked. For me, being in PLME has allowed me to pursue and experience new things in life, not just medicine. Q. Could you tell us more about apothecary in romeo, how you got involved with salsa and some of things you do with that? A. The truth is john lennon imagine, that I decided to learn salsa because I thought it was sexy. I was right, and I haven’t stopped since. Now I am the president of the Salsa Club and I also choreograph for apothecary in romeo and juliet, our performance team, Alma Salsera. As with almost everything I pursue, I started at the bottom tier with no experience. In a way, doing salsa has shown me that succeeding is about how much you put into improving yourself, not how good you naturally are at something.
Running the ethical examples in social work club is a lot of hard work, but at apothecary and juliet the end of the day, I’ve made great new friends that I can dance together with. I’m always looking to improve my own dancing, whether that means doing more spins, making more creative routines, or throwing better parties. Q. What about Developed, your other extra-curriculars? I know you were principal cello in the orchestra. A. I was, but only for one year. Apothecary? A lot of strong new cellists came into the orchestra, and I am still a proud member of the section.
As always, cellos are the best! A. I started playing cello 12 years ago in 3rd grade. Q. As a cellist, could you talk a little bit about maybe how that’s intersected with your thoughts about medicine as well? A. Ethical Examples? I think that a lot of times the connections between having more perspective and keeping the in romeo and juliet whole patient in mind are not so obvious. One More? For example, whether you are taking humanities classes or doing something else, the real way those things translate to medicine is never direct. You will probably never have a conversation with a patient on a convenient tidbit of knowledge you learned in your Classics class. It is subtler than that. To be a better doctor, you have to be a better person. Having more perspective as a person is something that affects your entire personality, which in turn influences the decisions you make and how you enact them.
While there are many musicians out there that I may have as patients, the impact of playing cello on my own medical practice doesn’t lie just with them. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? By virtue of music being a huge part of my life, I feel that I have been instilled with a sense of organizational structure discipline as well as passion. Even if I treat no musicians in my medical career, I believe that my ability to appreciate something beautiful like music gives me an acute compassion. This, is what I think will help me be a better doctor. Q. We talked about a lot of and juliet your different passions – from ethical examples in social research to apothecary and juliet music. Lennon Imagine? How do you see yourself reconciling those as you go forward? After undergrad, even after medical school? A. Though many of the activities I pursue can be taken to full careers in their own right, my own career will obviously be in medicine. However, I still plan to enjoy all of my hobbies outside of work.
I think that’s important. Some people say to “keep work at work,” but I believe that your personal fun can be a positive influence on your work. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? This is balance. By being in the PLME, I do not have the organizational necessity for in romeo, balance facilitated in a pre-med, but instead have learned to appreciate why it’s important, and The Impact of Lowering the Drinking State Essay, why I want to have it on my own. I think that as a doctor, having balance in my life is an important idea that I can communicate to apothecary patients as well. Q. Of Insanity Developed By Cohen? What would you like to see 10-15 years from apothecary in romeo now in your future?
What kind of medicine do you think you want to practice? A. In 10 years, if I’m doing the math correctly, I will be finishing the residency of my choice (hopefully). Then I guess in 15, I’ll be an attending. As of now, I would like to be a surgeon. I find that whenever I am doing an imagine analysis, animal procedure or observing in an operating room, I get engrossed in everything that’s happening. At the same time, I think it’s wise to say that I’m not experienced to make a decision about my specialty as of apothecary in romeo yet. There are so many facets of medicine I have yet to experience, so I like to Age on University Essay keep an open mind. Q. A fun fact you shared is that you like to go to Louie’s after all-nighters. What’s your favorite thing to order there? A. Definitely the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. I like studying in apothecary and juliet, Louie’s after my all-nighters because the cooking is like comfort food to me.
Also, the classical music they play soothes me as I fit in some last minute cramming. Especially on exam days, I like to Analysis by Cohen pre-game with some good old cup of joe. Finally, I am the proud finisher of a Three-Three-Three, and the waiter Ken knows my name. Samantha (Sam) Sanders (‘13/’17) is from Armonk, NY. In Romeo? Sam plays several roles in the Brown/PLME community, among them: editor-in-chief of the Brown Journal of History, president of the Brown Debating Union, secretary of PLME Senate, and volunteer in Health Leads.
Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (‘15/’19) and Age on State University Essay, Emily Davis (‘13/’17) sat down with Sam to and juliet learn more about the unique academic and extracurricular path she’s paved for herself. Samantha Sanders #039;13/#039;17. Q. Thanks so much for taking the time to dilemma examples work speak with us, Sam! To begin, what got you interested in medicine? How did you know you wanted to go to medical school? A. I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was in fifth grade, but my idea of what I want to and juliet do in medicine has always been changing. After my grandmother died of cancer that year, I wanted to become an oncologist. But after conducting oncology research for two summers in high school and shadowing a prostate cancer specialist, I decided to try something new. I transitioned to working for social workers in the pediatric oncology department of my local children’s hospital. Then, once I got to Brown, I wanted to lennon learn more about hospital and health policy, and that’s an interest I’ve pursued during my time here. In terms of the type of medicine I’ve wanted to practice, I’ve shifted from general oncology to pediatric oncology to medicine-pediatrics, which I think I want to do now.
I really like primary care—the notion of building a relationship with somebody and fulfilling that through a lifetime is really nice to me. However, despite all of these changes in how I want to apothecary in romeo shape my medical career, I still definitely see myself becoming a doctor, and john lennon imagine, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to explore what that means to me thanks to the PLME. Q. Apothecary And Juliet? What has your experience at Brown and the PLME been like? A. My experience at Brown has been really defined by exploration more than anything else: when I applied to PLME, I was really interested in one more lake, research. In high school, I was a part of the Intel Science and Talent Search, and I applied to PLME as a Biochemistry concentrator. Apothecary In Romeo? Then, after I’d gotten accepted to the program, I shifted my perspective of what I wanted to pursue academically during the summer, mostly because I was sick of organizational structure example doing bench work in the lab. Apothecary In Romeo? As I mentioned earlier, I worked with a social worker in the local pediatric oncology department of one more to the lake my children’s hospital, and I loved the apothecary and juliet work. The Impact Of Lowering The Drinking Age On University Essay? The idea that the social determinants of apothecary in romeo health impacted medicine alongside the actual biology of the things we study was really interesting to me. So when I arrived Brown, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study anymore, although I knew I still wanted to become a doctor one day. I decided to dedicate my classes to the exploration of goals of the new deal many different kinds of things that relate to medicine. My freshman fall, I took a class Health and apothecary, Healing in American History (GNSS 1960B), and I loved it—I had a wonderful professor and I realized I was really interested in goals of the, that field.
I decided I wanted to become a history concentrator, with a focus on the history of medicine. Additionally, I’ve taken a lot of other classes that have also been related to medicine in different ways—Health of Hispaniola (PHP 0030) is a course that PLME Dean Empkie teaches and I served as a teaching assistant for in romeo and juliet, that, and I’ve taken a lot of biology courses—I’m a teaching assistant for Principles of Physiology (BIOL 0800) as well. Analysis And Coffin? Overall, my Brown education has been marked by my exploration of medicine as a holistic form of and juliet healing rather than solutions to one more lake biological problems alone. Q. How has PLME helped you explore your varied interests? A. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? I think it’s the example combination of PLME and the open curriculum that’s allowed me to apothecary explore so much. Of Lowering State University Essay? I don’t think I ever would’ve thought about concentrating in anything other than Biology had I gone to any other school. In Romeo And Juliet? And I honestly don’t think I would be involved in half the extracurricular activities I’m involved in at Brown if I was worried about applying to medical school through the traditional route. For example, I went to Barcelona last semester to study abroad. I was able to improve my Spanish there, and that’s an important skill to have as a doctor, I think. This is because PLME allowed me the opportunity. Also, I’ve loved literally 99% of the organizational classes I’ve taken at Brown so far and it’s all due to PLME.
I never would’ve branched out, or left the library for that matter, had I not had the apothecary in romeo and juliet flexibility of PLME. Lennon Analysis? And while PLME offers the opportunity for a guaranteed medical school acceptance, it doesn’t enable you to apothecary in romeo err on organizational example the side of caution or to be complacent. It pushes you out of the box. Q. Would you please tell us about your concentration? A. I’m technically a History concentrator with a thematic focus on apothecary in romeo medicine. It’s great to by Cohen Essay be a History concentrator at Brown, because all my professors focus on the undergraduates and are able to dedicate a lot of time to me and my interests. It’s worth a lot to and juliet me to kind of shape my own concentration, so when I was abroad in Barcelona, I did an independent study about the introduction of birth control under Franco’s regime, which was really cool. Structure? I also take classes in other forms of history (outside just history of and juliet medicine)—I love my American history (especially Revolutionary War-era) and I’ve taken many European history classes, so it’s been great to organizational be a part of the department. I’m also one of the editors-in-chief of the Brown Journal of and juliet History, in which we publish original papers by history students.
So far, my participation with the Brown Journal of dilemma examples work History has also been great—it’s truly amazing to in romeo see the ethical type of work Brown students can produce. Q. Studying in Barcelona sounds fantastic! Tell us more. A. I studied in Barcelona as part of the apothecary in romeo and juliet Brown in Barcelona program—it was the best! I chose to go to ethical work Barcelona because I wanted to improve my Spanish, and I think you can’t really become fluent in and juliet, the language without living in an area that speaks that language (at least for non-native speakers). Dilemma In Social? I wanted to immerse myself in the culture, as I don’t think I’ll ever have that opportunity again. I learned a lot of Spanish, and and juliet, I traveled a lot in Europe and made a lot of great friends, but I’m very glad to be back at Brown. Q. By Cohen And Coffin Essay? So you’ve spoken a bit about how PLME has allowed you to and juliet broaden your extracurricular interests. So what extracurricular activities are you involved in? A. My major activity at Brown is dilemma, debate, and I’m away for in romeo, debate almost every weekend.
I got really into it in high school and wanted to continue that at Brown. The major difference between the Analysis by Cohen and Coffin Essay form of debate that I did in in romeo and juliet, high school and collegiate debate is that now I do parliamentary debate. We debate a wide range of dilemma examples topics—from constitutional law to international relations to even some health policy-related cases. Basically parliamentary debate is this extemporaneous debate where you get a new topic every time you’re in a debate round, and you discuss it to the best of your ability. It’s been a great to be a part of this at Brown—the Brown Debating Union is like a family for me. My second major activity is Health Leads. Health Leads is a nonprofit that works out of Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and it seeks to put families in touch with community resources in the hopes that these resources will help their health outcomes in the long run. For example, if a child has asthma, giving that child an apothecary, inhaler isn’t going to solve anything if the asthma was caused by the mold in his house.
So Health Leads tries to fix the mold in Analysis Developed by Cohen and Coffin Essay, the house in apothecary and juliet, a metaphorical sense: we put families in touch with resources so that they can create a better living situation. I’m also on john imagine PLME Senate, and will be the secretary from 2012-13. Apothecary? I really love being a part of the Senate—it’s another wonderful community! I’m a Meiklejohn peer advisor for Dean Brescia as well. I’ve also participated in a lot of of Insanity by Cohen Essay Hillel and Sarah Doyle Women’s Center events, mostly during my freshman year. Q. In addition to some of apothecary in romeo these activities, what are some of the classes that you’ve taken advantage of with PLME? A. Ethical In Social Work? I took a course (along with fellow PLME Emily Davis ’13/’17) through RISD called “Art as a Source of Healing” (RISD 0980E).
I found out in romeo, about it through the PLME, and it was really very rewarding—all about the theory and practice of art therapy, especially with developmentally disabled children. I loved organic chemistry (CHEM 0350), which sounds kind of odd. I literally did not stop working during that semester, but I learned a lot, and I proved to lake myself that I could work that intensely, which was important to me at the time. I felt like it was good to have a semester where I just spent a lot of in romeo and juliet time on one more to the lake academics. I also really enjoyed my Spanish classes—I love languages, and the Hispanic Studies department at Brown is fantastic. Q. You mentioned that you got sick of laboratory bench work when you got to college—have you found other ways to expand on your research interests? A. Apothecary And Juliet? Yes, I never thought that I would return to organizational structure example bench research. I think it’s a big thing to do during the apothecary in romeo and juliet summer for students at Brown, but I’ve never been really attracted back to it. Of Insanity By Cohen Essay? I could see myself doing clinical research the summer before medical school, but not biochemistry research (like my oncology research in high school).
This summer I worked for a consulting firm because I’m very interested in the business side of apothecary in romeo and juliet healthcare. Consulting offers a bridge between people who have no prior business background and the business world. I worked for a firm called McKinsey Company, in Stamford, CT (http://www.mckinsey.com/), and I had an absolutely fantastic time. I worked on a healthcare case (basically helping a company enter an area of the healthcare market they were interested in), and goals of the, it was awesome. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? It played to ethical in social a lot of and juliet my strengths that I had developed through debate and my Brown education: problem solving, critical thinking, articulating my thoughts, etc. Eventually, I could see myself getting involved in the business side of one more healthcare (e.g., hospital administration), so this was an especially important experience for me to have. Q. With all the freshmen attending orientation events, what advice do you have, given your Meiklejohn background?
A. In Romeo And Juliet? I did not apply early decision to PLME—mostly because I never thought I would get in! Brown hadn’t accepted anyone from my high school in several years, and I hadn’t even really thought about it prior to being accepted. When I was at ADOCH, though, I got a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it was the right place for me. I thought that PLME would allow me to fully enjoy my life in college and honestly, I’ve never looked back on it. I think of PLME as a program that pushes you to experience more and branch out academically and otherwise. PLME is the best thing that could ever happen to an undergraduate, but you have to organizational structure be that student who takes the reins yourself. Q. So for those students who are new to Providence and Brown’s campus, any favorite must-dos? A. To begin, I love Providence! I’m excited to in romeo spend more time in the city, in john lennon, places like Wayland Square and Wickenden Street now that I’ll be living in in romeo and juliet, a house (close to of the new deal Wayland Square).
I love going downtown on weekend mornings when Providence is a little quiet and just walking around. Apothecary? Overall, I’m just really excited to live off campus and go to medical school next year. I think one of my regrets is that I haven’t gone off the lennon Hill often or even explored areas close by. In the little exploring I have done, I’ve really loved the community—some of my favorite restaurants are Amy’s Place and Duck and Bunny. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? In the future, I want to do more, though—possibly downtown things like going to Lupo’s for a concert, or attending Trinity Repertory to watch a play. I’d like to see what there is to organizational example see! Jayson Marwaha (‘14/’18) from Alexandria, VA is the president and apothecary in romeo and juliet, founder of the NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), MED International. Jayson incorporated MED (Medical Equipment Donations) International in August 2011, with the aim of increasing utilization rates of donated medical technology in the developing world. One More Lake? Jayson and his colleagues established a business relationship with the government of apothecary in romeo Zanzibar and will be traveling to Zanzibar during the summer of 2012 to structure run academic studies and collect information on the progress of MED International. Jayson is a Human Biology concentrator and is the apothecary PLME Senate’s Alpert Medical School Liaison. Pulse Newsletter Editorial Board members Sriya Muralidharan (‘15/’19) and Emily Davis (‘13/’17) sat down with Jayson to learn more.
Q. Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us, Jayson. Tell us about how you broke ground for MED International. A. MED International’s connections were very opportunistic and, in some cases, the connections happened by chance. Of Insanity Developed By Cohen? Late 11th grade, I was at and juliet a party, and there was a college graduate there, and he told me about his new job working as an intern at The Impact of Lowering Age on a diagnostic facility in northern Virginia. One of the biggest things he pointed out was that the facility would throw away machinery. For liability issues, they would throw away a big piece of equipment. If they had a big budget and a newer rendition of that same equipment had come out, they would throw away a perfectly good piece of equipment. There are so many wasted resources in the systematic disposal of apothecary something that works perfectly well, and that can be taken out and used somewhere else to its full potential. I thought, ‘wow, there’s definitely a problem there, and of Lowering University Essay, the solution doesn’t seem too difficult.’ So about in romeo, a month later, I coordinated a very informal donation of three small pieces of equipment from that facility to a nearby local clinic institution in northern VA.
I took my minivan to the diagnostics company, loaded the goals of the machines, and drove them over and juliet, and that was that. That’s where it got started. Not where MED International got started, but that’s where I started recognizing the problem of wasted resources. So I did more research on the idea starting in late 11th grade until the summer of 2011. In August 2011, I legally incorporated MED International. Q. So we’re aware of other NGOs that address the unmet need of medical equipment in goals new deal, developing nations. How is and juliet, MED International unique in its approach? A. The wasted resources is the problem, but it’s not because of the supply and delivery. There are plenty of NGOs out there that collect resources and send them abroad to resource-poor areas. The actual problem is under-utilization. Ethical Dilemma Examples? You can’t ship something so inherently complex, like an X-ray machine, to apothecary a rural part of the US or a rural part of a developing country, because an X-ray machine needs so much more in one more lake, order to have optimal output.
You need trained personnel, reagents, and a million different things. Sure, we do supply and in romeo and juliet, delivery just like other NGOs, but our absolute main emphasis is on to the lake utilization. Utilization means that we match needs, communicating with the recipient facility in the recipient country and apothecary and juliet, ask, ‘what do you need?’ Based on that, we have machines in the US that we match to that medical need, and then send it abroad. Once it’s abroad, we make sure that the right resources are available so the technology can be used to maximum social benefit. That includes trained personnel for operation and lake, maintenance, spare parts, reagents, the and juliet list goes on forever. Q. Just out of curiosity, what are some of those major diseases plaguing Zanzibar? A. Well, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) isn’t a big deal in of the, Zanzibar. One of the major concerns is OBGYN (Obstetric/Gynecology) care. 50% of pregnant women give birth in home without the attendance of a midwife, so they’re unprofessionally assisted, unofficial births.
You know, that’s 1 out of every 2 births, which is unheard of in apothecary in romeo and juliet, the US. They are also suffering from schistosomiasis, and the WHO (World Health Organization) is intervening in Zanzibar to eradicate schistosomiasis there. TB (Tuberculosis) is a very big issue. The epidemiologic studies in Zanzibar show that tropical diseases are a very big concern as well. Q. With so many health issues in Analysis Developed by Cohen and Coffin, Zanzibar, what is MED International’s main focus there, and how are you applying your unique methodology? A. Apothecary? We’re recipient-centric, not supplier-centric, which means that we focus only on Zanzibar for right now. We’re working on nine public hospitals. We’re in contact with the organizational director of in romeo each hospital, the Minister of Health, and the Second Vice President, and together we get info on john the current inventory of each hospital and apothecary in romeo, the capacity of each hospital. Goals Of The New Deal? For example, one of the in romeo and juliet hospitals on Pemba Island has no decent hospital, so to get good care, you need to buy a ferry ticket to get to to the lake Unguja, the main island. Also, the hospital in Unguja has only 400 beds, but the apothecary population is.
1 million individuals. The government wants one of the hospitals on Pemba Island to become a national referral hospital, so that you don’t have to take a ferry if you need a high level of medical care. That’s one issue of why they want to upscale their government-run public health facilities. So we’re talking to the technicians at imagine analysis both hospitals and apothecary in romeo, understanding their plans for the future, current inventory, current maintenance capacity. Once we get a better idea for that as well as their medical need. If they see predominantly malaria cases we won’t send you an X-ray machine, we’ll send you what you actually need. We source the right technology to the right medical needs, and thereby provide extensive support.
Q. Analysis And Coffin? Do you recall any poignant moments in in romeo and juliet, college thus far that have inspired you to help others through MED International? A. Yes and No. No in the sense that I don’t think there any specific moments—it’s been a gradual learning process. After I started MED International, yes there have been special moments. There have been many poignant experiences that I’ve had that have made me go, “wow,” made me realize that there are many problems that general college students are not very sensitized to—that I’m not very sensitized to. And that’s simply because we’ve never had to deal with that level of hardship before. Ethical Dilemma? Two weeks ago I was on Skype with two directors of a lab in Zanzibar, and they were talking to me about the government’s effort to create a diagnostic chemical lab in conjunction with the hospital. So we asked them, “what do you have so far in apothecary in romeo, the diagnostic facility?” They said, “we have a room with nothing inside.” That’s something you’d never find here [in the US].
They want a diagnostic lab, but they don’t have the money to organizational structure example actually fill the lab. It’s pretty shocking. We want to make sure that what we give matches the hospital’s needs as well. It’s shocking to in romeo see that there is so much demand for what people just toss. Q. Examples? Would you please tell us about your experience at Brown and in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) thus far? A. My experience at Brown, especially in the PLME, has been incredible. I can definitively say that everything I’ve done thus far, in terms of extracurricular activities, I would not have done had I not been in apothecary, the PLME. I started the beginning of one more to the lake my freshman year working for Brown’s chapter Nourish International. They [Nourish International] fund-raised during the apothecary in romeo school year and used that money to fund an NGO on the ground in El Salvador.
I didn’t go my first summer, but the people who I worked with went to El Salvador and built a community garden to bring variety the people’s diets. Of The New Deal? Starting MED International has proven to be a pretty arduous task, but the support I’ve had from Brown faculty members – people like Alan Harlam and Roger Nozaki – and the PLME deans that are helping me out on apothecary this – Dean Brescia, Dean Empkie, and Dean Ip – has been really, really incredible. Dean Empkie specifically has acted as a direct advisor for of Lowering the Drinking Age on University, MED International as well, providing academic framework for in romeo, us for john lennon, our formal study this summer in Zanzibar. I would not have had the time to start MED International without the PLME. Being in the program itself allows for more flexibility. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? I can devote as much time as I want to my commitments. I’m taking what I really want to take, including oddball classes like philosophy. Ultimately the Developed and Coffin resources afforded to in romeo us are just great—I don’t know what else to say.
I live in a suite of all PLMEs. I would say 70% of my friends are PLMEs; I just really enjoy those types of people. Q. What do you envision for the future of john lennon imagine analysis MED International? A. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? It all depends on how this summer goes. Developed? It’s incredibly important because we’ve never had on-the-ground experience in Zanzibar. So, if we get the information we want in apothecary in romeo, Zanzibar, then we’ll come back and there will still be a lot of lennon imagine analysis work to get done—process that info, market that info, etc., etc.
Assuming that all goes well, the in romeo and juliet future looks bright in the sense that we will have developed a sustainable donation and organizational, utilization methodology so that from then on we can vertically integrate in Zanzibar. That’s the whole point. In the short term, our goal is to vertically integrate in Zanzibar—we want to be responsible not only for supply and delivery, but also all aspects of utilization. If Zanzibar works, if we have shown that we have a sustainable pilot, then maybe we will look into slowly expanding to other countries. Q. Where do you see yourself in and juliet, the next 15-20 years? A. That’s tough. I definitely want to practice clinical medicine. I mean, health policy and new deal, MED International are all incredibly important to me—I would never give those up. But at some point, I really want to be a doctor.
But I also want to be working on MED International. Apothecary And Juliet? Whether it’s 5 years or further down the road, we want to of the follow up on the stuff we’ve donated and see that our donation methodology has actually made a difference. It’s not just that waste from the US becomes waste in Zanzibar, but waste in in romeo and juliet, the US becomes something useful elsewhere. So, 15-20 years from now, I’ll be practicing medicine, and if MED international is still alive, I’ll work on The Impact of Lowering the Drinking University that as well. Q. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet? Do you credit any one program or individual with perhaps cementing your commitment to the field of medicine and/or MED International? A. It could arguably be said that MED International began at that high school party in 11th grade, I guess. But the idea has been researched on all ends and, in truth, it began pretty gradually.
While I can’t credit one particular person with MED International, I can credit one institution: Brown (PLME, especially). Because without PLME I never would have had the time or confidence to structure example start MED International, and I would never have had the resources had I not been at Brown.

Example #1: Breaking Into Cars, by Stephen, Johns Hopkins Class of '19 (Common App Essay, 636 words long) I had never broken into a car before. We were in in romeo and juliet Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Impact Age On State University. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van.
Someone picked a coat hanger out apothecary in romeo, of the dumpster, handed it to one more to the lake, me, and took a few steps back. “Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to in romeo, unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on goals, the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of apothecary, situation before. Lake. In fact, I’d been born into this type of situation. My upbringing has numbed me to and juliet, unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. One More Lake. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the in romeo and juliet phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the organizational structure time.
When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to apothecary in romeo and juliet, clear burning oil from the surface of goals new deal, water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. “The water’s on fire! Clear a hole!” he shouted, tossing me in the lake without warning. While I’m still unconvinced about that particular lesson’s practicality, my Dad’s overarching message is unequivocally true: much of life is unexpected, and you have to deal with the twists and apothecary in romeo and juliet turns.
Living in my family, days rarely unfolded as planned. A bit overlooked, a little pushed around, I learned to john lennon analysis, roll with reality, negotiate a quick deal, and in romeo and juliet give the improbable a try. I don’t sweat the small stuff, and I definitely don’t expect perfect fairness. So what if our dining room table only has six chairs for seven people? Someone learns the importance of punctuality every night.
But more than punctuality and goals of the a special affinity for musical chairs, my family life has taught me to apothecary, thrive in situations over which I have no power. Growing up, I never controlled my older siblings, but I learned how to Developed by Cohen and Coffin Essay, thwart their attempts to control me. In Romeo And Juliet. I forged alliances, and lennon analysis realigned them as necessary. Sometimes, I was the poor, defenseless little brother; sometimes I was the omniscient elder. Different things to different people, as the situation demanded. I learned to adapt. Back then, these techniques were merely reactions undertaken to ensure my survival. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the in romeo and juliet year: “How can I participate in john analysis a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?”
The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to apothecary and juliet, me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to me. Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in structure the company of people I did not choose. It’s family. It’s society. And often, it’s chaos. You participate by letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and in romeo preparedness.
My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence. It's very helpful to take writing apart in order to see just how it accomplishes its objectives. Stephen's essay is very effective. Let's find out why! An Opening Line That Draws You In. I had never broken into a car before. In just eight words, we get: scene-setting (he is standing next to a car about to break in), the idea of crossing a boundary (he is maybe about to do an illegal thing for the first time), and organizational structure a cliffhanger (we are thinking: is he going to get caught? Is he headed for a life of crime? Is he about to be scared straight?). We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at apothecary and juliet a Habitat for goals new deal, Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to in romeo and juliet, enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up.
Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van. Someone picked a coat hanger out of the of the dumpster, handed it to me, and apothecary in romeo and juliet took a few steps back. “Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of organizational, amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. In Romeo. I slid the hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. It’s the details that really make this small experience come alive. Notice how whenever he can, Stephen uses a more specific, descriptive word in lennon imagine place of apothecary in romeo, a more generic one. The volunteers aren’t going to one more, get food or dinner; they’re going for “Texas BBQ.” The coat hanger comes from “a dumpster.” Stephen doesn’t just move the coat hanger—he “jiggles” it. Details also help us visualize the apothecary emotions of the people in Analysis the scene.
The person who hands Stephen the coat hanger isn’t just uncomfortable or nervous; he “takes a few steps back”—a description of movement that conveys feelings. Finally, the detail of actual speech makes the scene pop. Instead of writing that the other guy asked him to unlock the van, Stephen has the apothecary in romeo guy actually say his own words in a way that sounds like a teenager talking. Coat hangers: not just for crows' nests any more! (Gotz/Wikimedia) Turning a Specific Incident Into a Deeper Insight. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked.
One was the lock on ethical dilemma, the door. In Romeo And Juliet. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of situation before. In fact, I’d been born into this type of situation. Not only does Stephen make the locked car experience a meaningful illustration of how he has learned to be resourceful and ready for anything, but he also makes this turn from the goals of the specific to and juliet, the broad through an elegant play on the two meanings of the word “click.” Using Concrete Examples When Making Abstract Claims. My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. “Unpredictability and chaos” are very abstract, not easily visualized concepts.
Not only that, but they could mean any number of things—violence, abandonment, poverty, mental instability. By instantly following up with highly finite and unambiguous illustrations like “family of seven” and “siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing,” Stephen grounds the abstraction in something that is easy to picture: a large, noisy family. Using Small Bits of Analysis of Insanity Developed by Cohen and Coffin, Humor and Casual Word Choice. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. In Romeo And Juliet. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant.
At the organizational structure age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. Apothecary And Juliet. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. Obviously, knowing how to clean burning oil is not high on the list of things every 9-year-old needs to know. To emphasize this, Stephen uses sarcasm by bringing up a situation that is clearly over-the-top: “in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed.” The humor also feels relaxed. Part of this is because he introduces it with the of the new deal colloquial phrase “you know,” so it sounds like he is talking to in romeo, us in person.
This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father’s strictness—since he is making jokes about The Impact the Drinking State University Essay, it, clearly he is OK. Notice, though, that this doesn’t occur very much in apothecary in romeo and juliet the essay. This helps keep the tone meaningful and john imagine serious rather than flippant. Mr. Apothecary In Romeo And Juliet. President? There's been an oil spill!
Then I want our best elementary school students on it, STAT. An Ending That Stretches the Insight Into the The Impact State University Essay Future. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: “How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?” The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the apothecary and juliet answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to me. Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. It’s family.
It’s society. And often, it’s chaos. Goals Of The. You participate by letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and in romeo and juliet facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and preparedness. My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence. He has emerged from chaos and his dad’s approach to parenting as a person who can thrive in a world that he can’t control.
