palindrome essay A Chronotope of Revolution: The Palindrome from the Perspective of Cultural Semiotics. By Erika Greber (Univ. of Munich / UC Irvine) Take the word ropot [murmur], Cincinnatus' brother-in-law, the wit, was saying to him, and read it backwards. Eh? Comes out funny, doesn't it? [--› topor : the axe] - Voz'mi-ka slovo ropot , - govoril Cincinnatu ego shurin, ostriak, -- I prochti obratno. A? Smeshno poluchaetsia? Vladimir Nabokov, Invitation to a Beheading (1)
In the following abstract, I propose to analyze the palindrome in terms of cultural semiotics and to explore the subliminal semantic concepts and asda, metaphorological implications which are involved in the genre's postmodern renaissance and which articulate certain political anxieties (something which applies especially to the recent rise of palindrome writing and Become Unstuck Essay, criticism in Russian, German and Serbo-Croatian literatures). (2) The palindrome, a special, restricted case of anagram, foregrounds the principle of letter permutation by its strictly sequential proceeding and thus has become the prototype and symbol of anagrammatic letter revolution (in Greek: anagrammatismos , in asda rates, Latin: revolutio ). The permutational 'revolutional' principle seems to be inscribed as an archi-semantic matrix into causes students the symbolic structure of the palindrome genre, into its unconscious -- a potential which is being activated in crucial situations of cultural change. The idea of the palindrome is closely associated with the material and corporeal aspect of verbal signification. Animal images are used for symbolizing the palindromic processes of euro rates regression and circularity: the answers, crab or cancer, and euro rates, the snake biting its own tail (the gnostic image of what stress in college Ouroboros). Likewise, the mirror metaphor has been applied to palindrome structures. Asda Rates. Largely a visual phenomenon, the palindrome epitomizes the spatiality of language and scripture, something indicated already on the metaphorological plane of classical terminology: running back again ( palindromos ), stepping back ( versus retrogradus ) -- a temporal motion in space. Allowing for reversibility of the linear discourse, the palindrome represents the very idea of transformation and metamorphosis. Of A And Contrast Essay. Palindromic reversion is a device for asda euro rates, breaking up the linearity of speech and, by implication, the irreversibility of questions time.
Irreversibility thematizes itself in the palindrome form by eating itself up (a quotation from Oskar Pastior, the outstanding contemporary German palindrome poet). Rates. Sequentiality and causality of time and space are annihilated in segmented plate, the palindromic motion. Thus, the palindrome can be conceived of asda euro as a chronotope of revolution. ('chrono-topos': time-space). In anagrammatic and what causes stress in college students, palindromic readings of asda words, the regular referential meaning is dismissed and signification emerges from the pure signifier, the material letter. Associations with alphabet soup letters (or with the so-called Russian bread letters) are quite to the point and underline the aspect of play and pleasure inherent in the genre. Food and eating are prominent motifs in palindrome texts, and palindrome discourse is essentially on eating and incorporation. (Cf. e.g. the Lucullan palindrome by Semyon Kirsanov, 1966, 77, and its intertextual counterpart by Aleksandr Bubnov, 1992, 17, displaying cannibalistic motifs). The genre of the palindrome, playful and ludic as it is, nonetheless has a strong implication of violence. In the work of its foremost practitioners, Velemir Khlebnikov and Vladimir Nabokov, as well as some of their postmodern successors, the palindrome is closely linked to death, cannibalism, beheading, and murder. That violence has long been attributed to letter permutation is explicitly testified to by a 17th century German and Latin riddle poem on the anagram, as well as by the combinatorial literature of German Baroque writers, such as Justus Georg Schottel's linguistic treatise with the martial title Horrendum bellum grammaticale / Der schreckliche Sprachkrieg (The Horrible Language War) referring to the times of the Thirty Years' War.
A palindromic reading of the term 'palindrome' itself in its German form ( Palindrom / Mordnilap ) points to the idea of murder, Mord . The palindromic letter play produces a 'poetic cannibalism' of a mostly grotesque type, but there are also instances of frightening or macabre uses of the genre. Such a semantic double-sidedness is quite in line with the palindrome's old Baroque name: versus diabolicus (a name which also indicates the ancient affinity of the palindrome to causes stress, magic and sorcery). Violence in palindrome texts has doubtlessly quite different motivations, but can possibly be attributed to a common ground. Letter permutation is an operation presupposing the rates, cutting up of the whole word into parts, it is an operation in stress students, the surgical sense. And the dismemberment of the word is prefigured, as Vladimir Toporov has postulated in carrying on Ferdinand de Saussure's anagram theory, in the sacral act of the priest dismembering the sacrificial creature.
By anagrammatic dismembering and euro, dissemination of the divine name(s) into the sounds and what stress, letters of poetic speech, the priest-poet and primeval grammarian imitated symbolically the dismemberment of the body and the rearrangement of the parts on the sacrificial altar. This mythopoetic Urszene of anagrammatic practices contains the idea of mimetic correspondence between name and thing, between language sign and signified object, and accounts for the Cratylic conception regularly implied in anagrams and palindromes ( nomen est omen ). From this perspective, it seems significant that Toporov's own telling name contains the very omen of palindrome violence: the axe ( topor ). Asda Euro Rates. Incidentally, the name of Khlebnikov, recognized initiator of examples today's palindrome poetry, is a telling name with the connotation of bread, khleb , and has been cut up and sliced by later poets' letter operations: a sacred name sacrificed on the altar of the palindrome. (As the asda euro, self-reflexive palindrome invites self reflection, I may add that my own name represents a cyclical self-contained palindrome, something I was unaware of mr chips questions until the Russian palindrome poet Aleksandr Bubnov dedicated a metareflexive palindrome to me playing on the name and the letters mordnilap and dealing, incidentally, with the then vital topic of putsches). In the aesthetic system of Russian Futurism -- and probably of the classical avant-garde movements in general --, cut-up plays a major role (with frequent use of corresponding chiffres like cut, axe , etc.) and connects to euro, the concept of montage and collage. The eminent status of the what stress students, cut-up code in avant-garde thought might be the reason why an rates avant-garde palindrome writer like Khlebnikov serves as relay for postmodern palindrome writers, Russian or non-Russian. Significantly, symbolic killing and what causes stress in college students, extermination is euro rates a central aspect in Baudrillard's anagram concept: as the stress, stock of euro rates letters is to be consumed without any rest, the name is annihilated so that for Baudrillard anagrammatic poetry is in effect a mode of extermination rather than manifestation of the name and segmented, the anagrammatic process is linked to the principle of self-consuming. In palindrome discourse, self-consumption combines with self-generation.
Characteristically, the palindrome is an rates old symbol of the idea of perpetuum mobile , the autopoietic force that keeps itself going. In accordance with these conceptual traits, the palindrome can become an apophatic figure, the verbal possibility of non-speaking. The paradox Jacques Derrida is approaching in Comment ne pas parler is expressed by segmented plate armor the cover cartoon: a mirror-shaped NON that marks the asda rates, evacuated centre of negativity, the evacuated circle or zero. Similarly, Edmond Jabès makes use of a meaningful palindrome in the context of cabbalistic book mysticism: NUL - L'UN, whereby progressive-regressive readings form the idea of eternal mutability of Zero into One and vice versa. As a means of simultaneously doing and undoing, the palindrome genre seems to stand for questions answers, autopoiesis, paradox and undecidability, something which possibly accounts for its boom in postmodern literature. Khlebnikov was the asda euro rates, first to choose revolt as a subject for a palindrome text, his long poem Razin (1920) with the Why Does Billy Pilgrim Become Unstuck in Time in "Slaughterhouse-Five"?, cossack Sten'ka Razin as a symbolic figure of the asda euro, revolutionary. After the defeat of the Communist regime, this poem's palindromic pattern was interpreted as an metaphysical poetry early anticipation of the revision of history eventually to come (Andrei Voznesenskii in asda, 1990). It seems that palindrome writers and critics in the nineties tend to thematize revolution and change due to their increasingly conscious recognition of the 'revolutionary' semantics of the stress in college students, genre.
Contemporary Russian palindrome writers have brought forth lively poetic milieus in asda, Moscow and Kursk with numerous activities such as a palindrome concourse, a palindrome festival (creating even a drama and metaphysical examples, sonnets in palindromic form), a conference on the culturological, linguistic, literary, mathematical, magical, philosophical and other aspects of the palindrome at a palindromic date 21.12.1991 (the next conference is scheduled for 2002), and a special fanzine named AMFIRIFMA (amphibic rhyme), featured by the Kursk Club of Palindromes and Palindromaniacs and its main activist Aleksandr Bubnov, a well-versed author of intricate palindromes who recently received a Ph.D. with a dissertation on the linguistic features of the Russian palindrome. It seems that in post-Soviet Russia, in a cultural situation in which people would like to reverse history and make a whole era disappear, an asda euro artistic form like the palindrome which can demonstrate the reversibility of time by retrograde devices of letter magic has its own fascination and Why Does Become Unstuck in Time, attraction. Furthermore, the apotropaic effect of ancient palindrome rites would be welcome -- an incantation of the symmetry of form directed against euro the imponderabilities of social change, an causes students exorcism of political and economical disorder through the order of alphabet letters. The cultural and political framework in which the palindrome genre could flourish was often one of rapid and unpremeditated change, of revolutionary situations. Asda Euro Rates. In Russian literary history, this would apply to the times of the leftist revolutions in 1917 and the following Civil War, the brief thaw of the Khrushchev era, the Perestroika period and example of a essay, the present Post-Communist era. But even the first Russian palindromes emerged during a period of radical change, namely in the Baroque period during the reign of Peter the Great and his far-reaching reforms. What accounts for much of asda euro permutational poetry in these periods is, it must be conceded, the plate armor, interest in ludism shared by the Baroque, Avant-garde, and Postmodernism, yet a comparative perspective adds specific evidence that there is more to the intensity of rates palindrome phenomena than just word play.
In two other contexts of enormous political and cultural upheavals in of a and contrast, the wake of the Communist breakdown the palindrome has become topical: in Germany around 1989 and the immediate post-unification years, and in Serbo-Croatian literature between 1991 and asda, 1995 in connection with the post-Yugoslav cultural split and segmented armor, war. In German feuilletons, the palindrome suddenly became a topic of broader public interest with the asda, unexpected participation of people outside literary and academic circles (cf. FAZ Nov. 1989 immediately after the china structure, fall of the Berlin wall, SZ June 1990, ZEIT July 1993, Herbert Pfeiffer's Wende-Köpfe 1993): a celebration of the 'velvet revolution' or already the symptom of a desire for reversal of unification? In the Croatian capital Zagreb there arose a debate on asda euro rates the palindrome's meaning as a symbol of cross-cultural interaction referring to the two dialects involved in the Serbo-Croatian language, one argument being that palindromic devices are in fact two-faced speech and represent an illusionary and utopian pseudo-monolingualism, and Billy in "Slaughterhouse-Five"?, an opposite argument that palindrome poetry might symbolically keep up the promise of asda rates dialogue and example of a compare, double-/pluri-vocal coexistence in a once multicultural context (Dubravka Orai #99; -Toli Orai #99; : Palindromska apokalipsa , 1992/1993; Dubravka Ugresi #99; , Die Kultur der Lüge , 1995). Euro Rates. Orai #99; -Toli #99; criticizes the conception that the palindrome's two parts are identical as utopian and questions whether the example essay, meaning must be the same in asda rates, both the left-right and right-left direction, from the West and causes stress in college, from the East. Here, the space of scripture is euro interpreted geographically and culturally, in segmented, relation to the cultural opposition between Croatian (Western) and Serbian (Eastern) languages, alphabets and cultures, whereby the palindrome form is seen as false aesthetic medium of leveling the two different branches into rates the artificial construct of Yugoslav newspeak.
From this follows in her argument, explicitly, the segmented plate armor, announcement of the apocalypse and, implicitly, the asda rates, project of dissociation of the two cultures, decontamination and purification. At this point, the project turns out to be itself utopian, as this supposed cultural purity is a dangerous illusion. Also, this conception neglects the social, third party, the Bosnian culture which is historically defined by asda euro rates syncretism. For a semiotic analysis of the palindrome in cultural terms, the stance of Juri Lotman is preferable, also because his argumentation is more precise. Palindromic symmetry is of an enantiomorphic type, i.e. Mr Chips Answers. mirror symmetry where as a matter of fact no part can be superimposed on the other.
From this Lotman derives a dialogic conception of the asda rates, palindrome, where the left and Billy Pilgrim Become Unstuck Essay, right side are recognized as similar yet different. The common palindromic form may illustrate this: although the signs are materially identical (containing the same letters), they differ semantically and have different meanings. Lotman, too, translates this concept into cultural terms (e.g., cultural communities like 'occident' and 'orient' become enantiomorphic pairs with an operating functional asymmetry). Such a dialogic conceptualization of the asda rates, palindrome's generic structure can be taken as a project of cultural dialogue operating in of a compare, conditions of hybridity. This could also apply to different phases within a culture which can be understood as engaging in mutual dialogue, before and after a revolutionary turn. Palindromic letter revolution and reversion is readable as an artistic form of cultural critique and as a culture's desire for reorganization and asda rates, reversal. (1) Literal translation. In the authorized English version of Nabokov's novel, translated by his son Dmitrij, an anagram is used instead of the palindrome to convey the desired connotations and result in the word 'axe': Take the word 'anxiety', Cincinnatus' brother-in-law, the wit, was saying to him. Now take away the word 'tiny', eh? Comes out example compare essay funny, doesn't it? (Penguin ed. P. 88)

Another interpretation suggests that the letters of the square can be re-aranged in form of a cross, forming the word 'paternoster.' Focus and Precision: How to Write Essays that Answer the euro, Question. Stephanie Allen read Classics and English at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and is currently researching a PhD in Early Modern Academic Drama at questions, the University of Fribourg. We’ve all been there. You’ve handed in an essay and you think it’s pretty great: it shows off all your best ideas, and contains points you’re sure no one else will have thought of. You’re not totally convinced that what you’ve written is relevant to the title you were given – but it’s inventive, original and good. In fact, it might be better than anything that would have responded to the question.
But your essay isn’t met with the euro, lavish praise you expected. When it’s tossed back onto mr chips answers, your desk, there are huge chunks scored through with red pen, crawling with annotations like little red fire ants: ‘IRRELEVANT’; ‘A bit of asda euro rates, a tangent!’; ‘. Billy Become In "Slaughterhouse-Five"?. ’; and, right next to your best, most impressive killer point: ‘Right… so?’. The grade your teacher has scrawled at the end is asda rates, nowhere near what your essay deserves. In fact, it’s pretty average. And the china social structure, comment at asda rates, the bottom reads something like, ‘Some good ideas, but you didn’t answer the question!’. If asked a question about Keats, you should write about Keats. If this has ever happened to you (and it has happened to me, a lot), you’ll know how deeply frustrating it is – and how unfair it can seem. This might just be me, but the exhausting process of example essay, researching, having ideas, planning, writing and asda euro rates, re-reading makes me steadily more attached to the ideas I have, and the things I’ve managed to put on the page.
Each time I scroll back through what I’ve written, or planned, so far, I become steadily more convinced of its brilliance. What started off as a scribbled note in the margin, something extra to think about or to armor pop in if it could be made to fit the rates, argument, sometimes comes to be backbone of a whole essay – so, when a tutor tells me my inspired paragraph about Ted Hughes’s interpretation of mythology isn’t relevant to my essay on Keats, I fail to see why. Or even if I can see why, the thought of taking it out is wrenching. Who cares if it’s a bit off-topic? It should make my essay stand out, if anything! And an examiner would probably be happy not to poetry read yet another answer that makes exactly the same points.
If you recognise yourself in the above, there are two crucial things to realise. Rates. The first is that something has to change: because doing well in high school exam or coursework essays is almost totally dependent on being able to pin down and organise lots of segmented, ideas so that an examiner can see that they convincingly answer a question. And it’s a real shame to work hard on something, have good ideas, and not get the euro, marks you deserve. Writing a top essay is a very particular and actually quite simple challenge. It’s not actually that important how original you are, how compelling your writing is, how many ideas you get down, or how beautifully you can express yourself (though of course, all these things do have their rightful place).
What you’re doing, essentially, is using a limited amount of time and knowledge to Why Does Pilgrim Become in Time in "Slaughterhouse-Five"? Essay really answer a question. It sounds obvious, but a good essay should have the title or question as its focus the whole way through . It should answer it ten times over – in every single paragraph, with every fact or figure. Treat your reader (whether it’s your class teacher or an external examiner) like a child who can’t do any interpretive work of their own; imagine yourself leading them through your essay by the hand, pointing out that you’ve answered the question here , and here , and euro rates, here. Now, this is all very well, I imagine you objecting, and much easier said than done. But never fear! Structuring an essay that knocks a question on the head is something you can learn to do in what stress in college a couple of easy steps. In the next few hundred words, I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned through endless, mindless crossings-out, rewordings, rewritings and asda euro rates, rethinkings. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been told to ‘write the question at the top of every new page’- but for some reason, that trick simply doesn’t work for mr chips answers, me. Asda Euro Rates. If it doesn’t work for segmented, you either, use this three-part process to allow the question to structure your essay: 1) Work out exactly what you’re being asked. It sounds really obvious, but lots of rates, students have trouble answering questions because they don’t take time to figure out exactly what they’re expected to do – instead, they skim-read and then write the essay they want to write.
Sussing out a question is a two-part process, and the first part is easy. Metaphysical. It means looking at rates, the directions the question provides as to plate what sort of essay you’re going to write. Rates. I call these ‘command phrases’ and will go into more detail about what they mean below. The second part involves identifying key words and example and contrast essay, phrases. Use forceful, persuasive language to asda rates show how the points you’ve made do answer the question.
My main focus so far has been on social, tangential or irrelevant material – but many students lose marks even though they make great points, because they don’t quite impress how relevant those points are. Again, I’ll talk about how you can do this below. 3) Be brutally honest with yourself about whether a point is relevant before you write it. It doesn’t matter how impressive, original or interesting it is. It doesn’t matter if you’re panicking, and euro rates, you can’t think of plate, any points that do answer the question. If a point isn’t relevant, don’t bother with it. It’s a waste of time, and might actually work against you- if you put tangential material in an essay, your reader will struggle to follow the thread of your argument, and asda, lose focus on your really good points.
‘Macbeth and example and contrast, Banquo meeting the witches on the heath’ by Theodore Chasseriau. Let’s imagine you’re writing an English essay about the euro, role and plate, importance of the three witches in Macbeth . You’re thinking about the euro rates, different ways in which Shakespeare imagines and presents the witches, how they influence the action of the tragedy, and perhaps the extent to which we’re supposed to believe in them (stay with me – you don’t have to mr chips questions answers know a single thing about Shakespeare or Macbeth to understand this bit!). Now, you’ll probably have a few good ideas on this topic – and whatever essay you write, you’ll most likely use much of the same material. However, the asda euro rates, detail of the of a and contrast, phrasing of the question will significantly affect the way you write your essay. You would draw on similar material to address the asda rates, following questions: Discuss Shakespeare’s representation of the segmented, three witches in Macbeth . How does Shakespeare figure the supernatural in euro Macbeth ? To what extent are the three witches responsible for Macbeth’s tragic downfall? Evaluate the china social structure, importance of the asda euro rates, three witches in bringing about Macbeth’s ruin. Are we supposed to believe in the three witches in Macbeth ? “Within Macbeth ’s representation of the witches, there is social structure, profound ambiguity about the asda, actual significance and power of their malevolent intervention” (Stephen Greenblatt).
Discuss. I’ve organised the examples into three groups, exemplifying the metaphysical examples, different types of asda, questions you might have to answer in an exam. The first group are pretty open-ended: ‘discuss’- and ‘how’-questions leave you room to set the compare and contrast essay, scope of the essay. You can decide what the focus should be. Euro. Beware, though – this doesn’t mean you don’t need a sturdy structure, or a clear argument, both of which should always be present in an essay.
The second group are asking you to evaluate, constructing an metaphysical poetry argument that decides whether, and how far something is true. Asda Euro. Good examples of hypotheses (which your essay would set out to prove) for these questions are: The witches are the china social structure, most important cause of tragic action in Macbeth. The witches are partially, but not entirely responsible for Macbeth’s downfall, alongside Macbeth’s unbridled ambition, and that of his wife. We are not supposed to believe the witches: they are a product of Macbeth’s psyche, and his downfall is his own doing. The witches’ role in Macbeth’s downfall is deliberately unclear. Their claim to reality is shaky – finally, their ambiguity is part of an uncertain tragic universe and asda rates, the great illusion of the theatre. (N.B.
It’s fine to conclude that a question can’t be answered in black and white, certain terms – as long as you have a firm structure, and keep referring back to it throughout the essay). The final question asks you to causes stress students respond to a quotation. Students tend to find these sorts of questions the most difficult to answer, but once you’ve got the hang of them I think the euro, title does most of the work for you – often implicitly providing you with a structure for Billy Pilgrim Become Unstuck in Time in "Slaughterhouse-Five"? Essay, your essay. The first step is breaking down the quotation into its constituent parts- the different things it says. I use brackets: ( Within Macbeth ’s representation of the witches, ) ( there is profound ambiguity ) about the ( actual significance ) ( and power ) of ( their malevolent intervention ) Examiners have a nasty habit of picking the most bewildering and terrifying-sounding quotations: but once you break them down, they’re often asking for something very simple. This quotation, for example, is asking exactly the asda, same thing as the other questions. The trick here is questions, making sure you respond to asda euro all the mr chips questions, different parts. Asda. You want to make sure you discuss the following: Do you agree that the metaphysical, status of the witches’ ‘malevolent intervention’ is ambiguous? What is asda, its significance? How powerful is it?
James I, the King of England and Scotland at stress, the time Macbeth was written, famously wrote ‘Daemonologie’, which encourages the practice of witch-hunting. Having worked out exactly what the rates, question is asking, write out plate a plan (which should be very detailed in a coursework essay, but doesn’t have to asda euro be more than a few lines long in an exam context) of the Why Does Billy Pilgrim Unstuck in Time in "Slaughterhouse-Five"?, material you’ll use in each paragraph. Make sure your plan contains a sentence at the end of each point about how that point will answer the question. A point from asda euro my plan for one of the topics above might look something like this: To what extent are we supposed to believe in the three witches in Macbeth ? Hypothesis: The witches’ role in Macbeth’s downfall is plate armor, deliberately unclear. Their claim to asda euro reality is uncertain – finally, they’re part of an metaphysical examples uncertain tragic universe and the great illusion of the theatre. At the time Shakespeare wrote Macbeth , there were many examples of people being burned or drowned as witches There were also people who claimed to be able to exorcise evil demons from people who were ‘possessed’.
Catholic Christianity leaves much room for asda rates, the supernatural to exist This suggests that Shakespeare’s contemporary audience might, more readily than a modern one, have believed that witches were a real phenomenon and did exist. My final sentence (highlighted in red) shows how the material discussed in the paragraph answers the question. Writing this out at the planning stage, in plate armor addition to asda clarifying your ideas, is segmented armor, a great test of whether a point is relevant: if you struggle to write the sentence, and asda rates, make the connection to the question and larger argument, you might have gone off-topic. Step Three: Paragraph beginnings and mr chips questions answers, endings. This 16th century English illustration shows a witch feeding her familiars. The final step to making sure you pick up all the rates, possible marks for ‘answering the questions answers, question’ in asda euro rates an essay is ensuring that you make it explicit how your material does so. This bit relies upon getting the beginnings and endings of paragraphs just right. To reiterate what I said above, treat your reader like a child: tell them what you’re going to say; tell them how it answers the example compare and contrast, question; say it, and then tell them how you’ve answered the question. This need not feel clumsy, awkward or repetitive.
The first sentence of each new paragraph or point should, without giving too much of your conclusion away, establish what you’re going to discuss, and asda rates, how it answers the question. The opening sentence from the paragraph I planned above might go something like this: Early modern political and religious contexts suggest that Shakespeare’s contemporary audience might more readily have believed in witches than his modern readers. The sentence establishes that I’m going to discuss Jacobean religion and china structure, witch-burnings, and rates, also what I’m going to use those contexts to show. I’d then slot in all my facts and examples in the middle of the paragraph. In College. The final sentence (or few sentences) should be strong and asda euro, decisive, making a clear connection to the question you’ve been asked: Contemporary suspicion that witches did exist, testified to by witch-hunts and exorcisms, is crucial to mr chips questions answers our understanding of the witches in Macbeth.
To the asda rates, early modern consciousness, witches were a distinctly real and dangerous possibility – and the witches in what stress the play would have seemed all-the-more potent and terrifying as a result. The best way to asda get really good at china, making sure you always ‘answer the question’ is to asda rates write essay plans rather than whole pieces. Set aside a few hours, choose a couple of china structure, essay questions from past papers, and for each: Write a hypothesis Write a rough plan of what each paragraph will contain Write out the first and last sentence of rates, each paragraph. You can get your teacher, or a friend, to mr chips answers look through your plans and give you feedback. If you follow this advice, fingers crossed, next time you hand in an essay, it’ll be free from red-inked comments about irrelevance, and rates, instead showered with praise for the precision with which you handled the topic, and how intently you focused on answering the question. Structure. It can seem depressing when your perfect question is just a minor tangent from the question you were actually asked, but trust me – high praise and good marks are all found in answering the question in front of you, not the one you would have liked to see. Teachers do choose the questions they set you with some care, after all; chances are the question you were set is the more illuminating and asda, rewarding one as well. 40 Responses to “Focus and answers, Precision: How to Write Essays that Answer the asda, Question” August 21, 2014 at 8:22 am, Kristen Webster said:

March 18, 2015 at 12:34 pm, ORA Admin said: A ‘to what extent’ essay question is effectively a ‘yes or no’ essay question that’s phrased in example of a essay a more helpful way. For example: To what extent did his desire for asda, a son influence Henry VIII’s decision to break from the Catholic Church? Did his desire for a son influence Henry VIII’s decision to break from the Catholic Church? You can see that both questions will get a very similar answer, only example “to what extent” gives you a hint of what sort of answer is expected – that it played some role, but that there are other causes that need to be considered.
In a ‘to what extent’ essay, you should consider a variety of reasons, but in each paragraph return to the reason given in the question. In my Henry VIII example, you might write one paragraph on his desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, but connect this back to his desire for a son, as he believed Anne Boleyn stood a better chance of asda euro rates, giving him a son than Catherine of Aragon. In the example of a compare, conclusion, you could then assess whether the reason given in the question is in fact the most important, or if there was a more significant reason that you have identified in the essay. SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. If you're reading this article, I assume you're an IB Student, who is getting ready to write their Extended Essay. Asda! If you're looking at this as a potential future IB student, I recommend reading our other introductory IB articles first: What is the social International Baccalaureate (IB) Program? and What is the IB Curriculum? What are IB Diploma Requirements?. IB students around the euro rates globe fear writing the Extended Essay. In this articles, I'll try to mr chips answers, get you excited about writing your Extended Essay and euro rates, provide you with the resources to get an of a A. I'm a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to receive an A on euro rates, my IB Extended Essay. If you don’t believe me, the proof is in the IBO pudding, If you're confused by what this report means, EE is structure short for Extended Essay, and English A1 is the asda rates subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In layman’s terms, my IB Diploma was graded during May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received a grade A. The IB Extended Essay (or EE) is a 4,000 word structured mini-thesis that you write under the supervision of an advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts towards your IB Diploma (to learn about all of the IB diploma requirements, check out our other article).
I'll explain exactly how the EE affects your diploma later in this article. For the Extended Essay, you choose a research question as a topic; this topic needs to example essay, be approved by IBO (which is not very difficult). Asda! You can do a typical research paper such as in this paper, or you conduct an segmented armor experiment/solve a problem such as in this paper. Most schools allow you to pick your advisor (an IB teacher preferably at your school, although you can also get access to one at asda euro rates, another school through the Pamoja Education). Why Does Billy Become In "Slaughterhouse-Five"?! I'll explain how to pick your IB EE advisor below. The IB Extended Essay must include a cover page, an abstract (one-page synopsis of your essay), a table of contents, the 4,000-word essay (which will range from 10-20 pages depending on whether your topic requires illustrations such as an experiment would), and a bibliography. Your completed Extended Essay is then sent to the IBO to be graded (I will go into more detail on grading below).
What Should You Write About in Your Extended Essay? You can technically write about anything, so long as the IBO approves it. However, you should choose a topic that falls into one of the asda euro IB Course Categories, (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.) which shouldn’t be difficult because there are so many class subjects. Here is a range of sample topics with the example of a and contrast attached extended essay: You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic. So, how do you pick when the options are limitless? I will help you with that next: 6 Tips for Writing a Grade A Extended Essay. Tip #1: Write About Something You Enjoy Because You'll Be Spending a Lot of Time on It.
I love British theatre and ended up writing mine about a revolution in post-WWII British theatre #theatrenerd. I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to asda, take the Extended Essay seriously. Segmented Armor! I ended up receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship to asda, USC’s School of Dramatic Arts program and in my interview for example of a and contrast essay, the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay. I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship. How do you find a topic you are passionate about? Start by figuring out which classes you enjoy the most and euro, why you enjoy them. Do you like Math because you like to problem solve? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze texts? Once you have figured out a general subject area such as Physics, you should brainstorm more specific topics by plate, putting pen to paper. What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics?
What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending an hour on this type of asda euro, brainstorming. Mr Chips! After doing this preliminary brainstorming make sure to choose: Tip #2: Chose a Topic That Is Not Too Broad, But Not Too Narrow. This is a fine line. You need to write about something specific, but not so specific that you can’t write 4,000 words on it . You can’t write about WWII because that would be a book worth of material. You don’t want to write about what type of soup prisoners of rates, war received in POW camps because you probably can’t come up with 4000 words on it.
However, you could possibly write about how the conditions in German POW camps were directly affected by plate, the Nazis successes and failures. This may be too obvious of a topic, but you get my point. If you're really stuck trying to find a not too broad or narrow topic, I recommend trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. If you refer back to rates, the topics I mentioned above, you may notice that two use comparisons. I also used comparison in my EE, comparing Harold Pinter's Party Time to John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in plate armor, order to show a transition in British Theatre. Topics with comparisons of asda, 2-3 plays/books/diets/etc. tend to be in the sweet spot of in college, not too narrow or broad because you can analyze each portion and after doing in-depth analysis on each, you compare and explain the significance of the comparison. Euro Rates! The key here is stress in college students that the comparison needs to be significant. I compared two plays to show a transition in British Theatre. Comparisons are not the asda euro rates only way to get a grade A EE.
If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison based topic and you are still unsure if a topic is Billy Become Essay too broad or narrow, spend 30 minutes doing some basic research and asda, see how much material is out there. If there are over 1,000 books/articles/documentaries out there on the exact topic, it may be too broad. If there are only 2 books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. What Stress In College! If you are still unsure, ask your advisor! Speaking of rates, advisors:
Tip #3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Very Familiar With Your Topic and example of a compare and contrast essay, Who Seems Excited About It. If you are not certain of who you would like to rates, be your advisor, I would start by what in college, creating a list of your top three choices. Next, create a list of pros and cons (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!). For example, Mr. Green is my favorite teacher, and we get along really well, but he teaches English, and I want to euro, conduct an experiment to compare the answers efficiency of asda euro rates, American Hybrid Cars to Foreign Hybrid Cars. Ms. White teaches Physics, I had her a year ago, and she liked me. She could help me design my experiment. I am going to ask Ms.
White! Do NOT just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor. They may be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. I would not suggest asking your Biology teacher to guide you in what students, writing your English EE. EXCEPTION: If you have a teacher who is asda passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my Theatre topic), you can ask that instructor. Consider all of your options first before you do.
There was no theatre teacher at my school, so I could not find a theatre-specific advisor, so I chose the next best thing. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an questions Agreement Form. Make sure you ask your IB coordinator if there is any required paperwork. IBO does not require any paperwork. Rates! If your school needs a Form signed, make sure you bring it with you when you ask a teacher to be your EE advisor.
Tip #4: Choose an Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best. Some teachers may just take on students because they have to and may not be passionate about social reading drafts and may not give you a lot of euro rates, feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the time to read several drafts and questions, give you extensive notes. Asda Rates! I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make the draft better. Ask a teacher that you have experience with either through class directly or through an extracurricular activity. Do not ask a teacher that you have no connection to; a teacher, who does not know you, is unlikely to push you. Note: The IBO only allows advisors to suggest improvements to the EE, but they may not be engaged in writing the EE. Segmented! The IBO recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in asda, total with the candidate discussing the Billy Become Unstuck in Time Essay EE. Tip #5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow. IB likes structure. Asda! Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be 1-2 pages double-spaced), research question/focus (i.e. what you will be investigating), body, and china, conclusion (about 1 page double-spaced).
An essay that has unclear or poor organization will be graded poorly. Asda Euro! Also, make sure your 300-word abstract is clear and briefly summarizes your whole argument. An ambiguous abstract will make it more challenging for metaphysical examples, the reader to follow your essay’s argument and will also hurt the grading of your EE. The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about 8-18 pages double-spaced (again just depending on whether or not you include diagrams).
Your body can be split into multiple parts. For example, if you are doing a comparison, you might have 1/3 of your body as Novel A Analysis, 1/3 as Novel B Analysis, and the last 1/3 as Comparison of Novel A and euro, B Analysis. If you are conducting an questions experiment or analyzing data such as in this EE , your EE body will have a clear and obvious parts following the euro scientific method: stating the research question, discussing your method, showing the data, analyzing the data, discussing uncertainties, and drawing a conclusion/evaluating the experiment. Tip #6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later! You will not be able to metaphysical, crank out a 4,000-word essay in a week and get an A. You will be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books, plays, and watching movies).
Start the research possible as soon as possible. Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Asda Euro Rates! Some schools want them as soon as November of your Senior Year; others will take them as later as February of Senior Year. Your school will give you your deadline; if they haven't mentioned it by February of Junior year, ask your IB coordinator. Some schools will give you a timeline of when you need to metaphysical poetry, come up with a topic, when you need to asda euro, meet with your advisor and when certain drafts are due.
Not all schools do. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure if you are on a specific timeline. Here is china social my recommended timeline, it is earlier than most schools, but it will save you so much heartache (trust me, I remember): January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least top 3). February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor (if he or she says no, keep asking others until you find one - see my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor).
April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least 7-10) to your EE advisor. Asda! Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline. Summer between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between Junior and Senior Year! I know, I know no one wants to what, work during the summer, but trust me this will save you so much stress come the fall when you are busy with college applications and other IB internal assessments for your IB classes. Asda Euro! You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely won’t be able to what stress students, get everything you want to euro, say into 4000 articulate words the first time. Example Compare! Try to get this first draft into the best possible shape you can, so that you do not have to work on too many revisions during the school year on top of your homework/college applications/work/extracurriculars/etc. August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of rates, your EE to your advisor and receive feedback.
Work on Billy in "Slaughterhouse-Five"?, incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft. September/October of Senior Year: Submit second draft of EE to your advisor (if necessary) and receive their feedback. Euro! Work on creating the best possible final draft. November-February of Senior Year: Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to IBO. Questions Answers! You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate.
The early bird DOES get the worm! Extended essays are marked by asda rates, external assessors (examiners appointed by mr chips, the IB) on a scale of 0 to 36. There are general and subject-specific criteria, at a ratio of 2:1 (24 possible marks for euro, the general criteria and stress, 12 marks for the subject-specific one). Euro Rates! The total mark is converted into a grade from A to E, using the armor below parameters: Here is the typical breakdown of rates, scores (from 2008): How Does the armor Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma?
