online speech The internet as we know it is nearly 30 years old. Sure, the web is a bit more complicated and more intricately connected than it was 30 years ago, but its no less of a modern Wild West today than it was in the 90s (although you may need to dig deep into the darknet to experience the real gun-slinging). The freedoms and anonymity we enjoy online are, however, constantly under scrutiny, by supplement, both governments and marshalls ave y businesses alike. At the heart of the issue many have with the internet in its current form is the aforementioned anonymity. That freedom is in no small part is guaranteed by usc writing supplement, the First Amendment, but it comes in direct conflict with the distinctly gray legal areas the internet seemingly creates with ease.

On the surface, online freedom of speech seems simple enough. The words inscribed within the First Amendment appear to be fairly straightforward in covering the lizzy stanton topic: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of usc writing supplement religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of analysis hypothesis speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. We see all of usc writing supplement those freedoms expressed on the internet with stunning regularity. Punk Ideology! Religious websites of all kinds abound; people can and do say almost anything, sometimes with reckless abandon; newspapers are now surviving almost exclusively because of supplement their internet presence; social media websites and online forums allow anyone to assemble; websites, such as , exist to streamline our legally-required right to petition the government. Yet much of what happens on the internet falls more specifically under the broad concept of Allan Sorrows free speech. However, the definition of speech has expanded in the past 200 years to now include far more than just written or spoken words. Actions themselves can constitute free speech. This broad definition makes interpreting the freedoms, and supplement subsequent limitations, all the more vague as some actions are certainly harmful to others in ways that infringe on their rights. According to , the First Amendment does not cover: Words or actions meant to incite violence or that influence others to commit acts of violence (including fighting words ) ( Schenck v. United States , 249 U.S.

47 (1919)) Libel and slander ( New York Times Co v. Sullivan , 376 U.S. 254 (1964)) Child pornography ( New York v. Ferber 458 U.S. 747 (1982)) The creation or distribution of obscene materials ( Roth v. United States , 354 U.S. 476 (1957)) The burning of draft cards as an anti-war protest ( United States v. OBrien , 391 U.S. 367 (1968)) Students printing articles in a school newspaper over hypothesis, the objections of the school administration ( Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier , 484 U.S. Usc Writing! 260 (1988)) Students who make obscene speeches at school-sponsored events ( Bethel School District #43 v. Fraser , 478 U.S. 675 (1986)) Students who advocate illegal drug use at a school-sponsored event ( Morse v. Frederick , 200 U.S. 321 (2007)) There are more, to river be sure, but note that the limitations on free speech are almost always specific to particular cases that dont directly or exclusively involve the internet. For the web, inciting violence and distribution of obscene materials easily apply, although these two instances are still legally vague. What, for example, might be considered obscene?

And to supplement what extent is marshalls ave y, someone responsible for the independent actions of other people who respond to usc writing supplement their words in unsavory and violent ways? Even still, free speech online is coming face to face with other legal issues, such as copyright laws written into contrastive hypothesis, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and usc writing filesharing. Filesharing sites and those who utilize them have taken on increasing amounts of scrutiny. In the U.S., in particular, the cross section of free speech and filesharing come together under the Essay shadow of the First Amendment. Do file sharers have the supplement right to First Amendment anonymity? Or do copyright holders maintain the right to reveal and pursue those who are illegally sharing their content? And perhaps an even bigger question: How do either of these issues fit under the purview of the First Amendment in the first place?

Different groups of internet denizens have different concerns when it comes to nile First Amendment rights on the web. Journalists must be concerned about what they publish and about the usc writing supplement potential for punk ideology libel; social media users must worry about the consequences of usc writing supplement what they say or share online, as well as the punk ideology privacy of that material; content creators must worry about whether what they create and share may be considered obscene; all internet users must be cognizant of supplement net neutrality and the implications of its loss. Much of the internet freedom debate deals directly with copyrights holders desires to locate and sue those who share files illegally, and around what is and is not considered hateful and violent speech that moves a step too far in the wrong direction. However, the lizzy stanton very scope of the internet covers all facets of free speech, and in many ways, expands the usc writing supplement boundaries and definition of the First Amendment. Free speech online is not as free as you think. The First Amendment and the internet are currently at odds with each other. This may seem counter-intuitive, as many consider the internet to be the last, best hope for real free speech, but as Susie Cagle so eloquently states in her Pacific Standard piece, No, You Dont Have Free Speech Online: On one hand, we expect these walled gardens to protect us from invasive government spy programs, and were outraged when they dont. On another, we expect them to act as a public utility, an who were powers ww2 arm of government, protecting our constitutional rights. But Twitter can ban whoever it wants. Twitter has no responsibility to free speech.

In truth, the internet is usc writing, only at such odds with free speech due to what the Sunlight Foundations Christopher Gates writes is our continued use of the internets walled gardens, or privately-owned social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. In his Eulogy for Politwoops , Gates explained: Our shared conversations are increasingly taking place in privately owned and managed walled gardens, which means that the politics that occur in lizzy stanton, such conversations are subject to private rules. Therein lies the problem. Yes, the First Amendment applies online, just as it does in regular written, personal, religious, and usc writing political discourse. But one of the key limitations of the internet lies less in what we can say, but where we choose to say it. Does this mean the First Amendment comes screeching to punk ideology a halt when we hop online? Not necessarily. Usc Writing! But we engage each other through the internet primarily via private websites, not public ones, so the First Amendment, to no small degree, is far from a protected free speech zone. Instead, the marshalls ave y Internet a more akin to a public highway criss-crossing private properties.

We could choose to stop on the highway, but we wont find much benefit in that if we do. After all, the highway itself has nothing to offer us; the usc writing destinations it helps us reach, however, provide value. This, of course, raises a very concerning question: Where are the internets actual free speech zones? E.g., are there any websites that are government owned or free from private rules , in which Americans can engage each other, or where we can express our thoughts, ideas, and beliefs, without the marshalls ave y looming specter of getting voted off the island? Not really. And thats a problem. That said, the First Amendment and online free speech concerns impact and cover different groups in usc writing, different ways. Free speech for all internet users. For your average internet user, free speech concerns typically involve the following: Copyright infringement Comments and material posted on online forums and social media websites The fluid definition of obscenity

Lets look at each of these issues individually, and how to who were ww2 stay on the right side of the First Amendment. This is one issue with no easy answer. Copyright infringement relates to the sharing and acquisition of copyrighted, intellectual property without attribution or compensation to the correct owner. Supplement! There are a lot of ways your average Internet user can come face-to-face with this issue. One of the first examples of this problem on the Internet cycles back to 1999, when the popular music sharing application, Napster, was sued by the axis, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for copyright infringement. The case could be seen as one of the defining points for copyright infringement online, considering the RIAA later sued more than 200 Napster users over copyright infringement as well. Some arguments on the issue maintain that digital copyrights are counter-intuitive, and that copyrights were originally crafted to create scarcity for limited materials. This leads to the idea that copyrights for usc writing supplement digital materials, which in essence are or can be unlimited, inhibit free speech. One can find such an argument published by the LA Times , and the Electronic Frontier Foundation , among others. The issue is overly complex with no clear definition, but consecutive court rulings do make one thing certain: The government is more likely to land on the side of copyrights holders than file sharers. Marshalls Ave Y! And thats not just the companies involved.

That includes people who use file-sharing services. Usc Writing! Interestingly, however, the DMCA, the very law intended to protect copyright holders in a new digital age, in some ways actually inhibits their ability to marshalls ave y prevent the spread of copyright infringement due to the safe harbor clause. To that end, free speech is severely limited regarding file sharing and copyrighted material, but there are still many gray areas. Using a peer-to-peer website like The Pirate Bay to seek out and download the latest Steven Spielberg movie or Beyonces newest album could land you in usc writing, hot water. Whether you agree to who were ww2 the legitimacy of digital copyrights or not, those materials are legally protected for usc writing their owners and the law sits with copyright holders in most cases. Furthermore, copyright holders go to Edgar Allan Poe's Sorrows great lengths to pursue and usc writing supplement stamp out copyright infringement, even working directly with ISPs to locate individuals who download their material illegally.

However, those gray areas exist when it comes to marshalls ave y geographically-locked content. Supplement! For example, using a VPN to beat the Netflix proxy ban and gain access to different Netflix regions is currently not illegal. It violates no copyrights laws, although it may violate Netflixs own Terms of Use. Therefore, you can engage in such activities to gain access to a lot of copyrighted material thats not sold or streamed in your country, but you may be making your streaming services or the copyrights holders who make money by selling streaming rights to different geographic regions very unhappy when you do. Susan Cagle said it best in her article: You dont have free speech online. However, thats not entirely true.

You do have free speech online; you just dont have free speech when youre using privately-owned social media websites and forums. Most users wont come face-to-face with this reality, as social media websites and online forums that try to attract a large user base are typically slow to contrastive hypothesis ban people from their services. However, it can and does happen once users cross the line from general free speech to making online threats, harassing other users, or when posting obscene material (well get into that one later). In general, websites like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and supplement others will make banning decisions that are in the best interest of their company, or due to general disagreements with the political bent of the posters. Most recently, Twitter deleted a large number of Twitter accounts associated with the Alt-Right. Many of those accounts were from individuals who did not make threats or even post necessarily disparaging or harassing material, but whom were aligned with the marshalls ave y overwhelmingly unpopular political movement. In perhaps another blow to usc writing supplement the Alt-Right, Reddit recently decided to do the punk ideology same thing , closing down several private forums associated with the movement. In a private message to Gizmodo , the former mod for supplement /r/AltRight explained: Im honestly not sure of the details yet. We anticipated Reddit would terminate the sub soon because they typically dont allow these types of right-wing groups to lizzy stanton get much bigger than 20,000 subscribers, and /r/AltRight was rapidly nearing that point. Many see the usc writing Alt-Right as a racist, neo-Nazi movement, making Twitters and lizzy stanton Reddits move widely applauded by some, and openly condemned by usc writing, others, if not highly controversial. However, it served to punk ideology highlight the fact that the social media websites we use as free speech conduits are not duty-bound to protect our First Amendment right to free speech or expression.

Reddit, especially, is far from a free speech zone, where admins have even edited user comments that they didnt like. Social media sites and forums only supplement, allow free speech to Edgar Allan Poe's the extent that it makes good business sense, and theyll follow the tide of usc writing public opinion if it threatens their business, suppressing the speech of some to secure their business interests and help prevent users from fleeing to other services. Be careful with what you say on social media websites and analysis hypothesis online forums. Those websites have no legal requirement to protect your speech, and they can ban you for any reason and mostly without consequence as long as youre not a paying customer, that is. Once you exchange money for usc writing services, things get a bit tricker for Edgar Allan Poe's Sorrows them, but not overwhelmingly so. In many cases, those sites may actually be required to report what you say to the federal government or local police as well, especially in cases of harassment and threats.

So, not only usc writing, are your free speech rights non-existent on social media and online forums, you actually expose yourself to more legal consequences by using these sites than by avoiding them altogether. The only way to have absolute freedom of speech on social media is to lizzy stanton create your own website. Sadly, theres no guarantee written into usc writing, the First Amendment or anywhere else in the constitution that youll be granted an audience, so good luck attracting one without having to use already-established social media sites first. Posting, Sharing and Viewing Obscene Material Heres the punk ideology tricky part to usc writing this issue: Whats obscene to one person is certainly not going to be obscene to marshalls ave y everyone. Many people take significant issue and umbrage to usc writing supplement the posting of river animals aborted fetuses as a means of political speech against supplement abortion, while others view it as a necessary method to communicate the position.

Theres an interesting debate currently going on at on this very issue, in fact. The images are certainly disturbing. But is displaying and posting them in public protected by lizzy stanton, the First Amendment? The short answer is no, but its complicated. Again, this goes back to supplement the sticky situation with social media platforms. Most social media websites block a large variety of obscene material, but what gets blocked and whats allowed through is often highly political in contrastive analysis, nature.

Many people complained when Facebook shut down the Facebook Live video of one police shooting , for example, but the usc writing site removed and marshalls ave y then returned a video of a different police shooting . In the case of the first example, Facebook was responding to the requests of police. In the supplement second situation, Facebook claimed the removal was due to nile a glitch. Most social media websites have well-defined rules for whats considered too obscene for their sites, while not every social media website will have the same definitions. Youll find more pornographic material on Reddit (and almost certainly on 4Chan) than you will on Facebook, but there are some kinds of material that almost all websites ban outright due to legal requirements. According to supplement Cornell University Law Center : A comprehensive, legal definition of obscenity has been difficult to establish. However, there are some legal precedents that do establish certain types of punk ideology materials as obscene.

Legally, obscenity is measured using whats known as the Miller test , a rule established by the Supreme Court in 1973 following the Miller v. California case, which evaluates whether certain material is legally obscene in supplement, this manner: (a) whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards would find that the the axis powers ww2 work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest. (b) whether the usc writing supplement work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law, and. (c) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. If a state obscenity law is thus limited, First Amendment values are adequately protected by ultimate independent appellate review of constitutional claims when necessary. For clarity, something is only legally obscene if it satisfies all three of analysis hypothesis these points. But youll note that theres a significant amount of subjectivity involved in the test itself, making it somewhat useful as a tool for changing times, but difficult when dealing with disparate communities who hold different beliefs. Usc Writing Supplement! The internet tends to bring these communities into direct conflict on a regular basis, making the definition of obscenity all the more elusive. Prior to Miller v. The Axis Powers! California, the defining law was established under Roth v. United States , which declared that obscenity is supplement, not protected under the First Amendment and that it is therefore up to the axis individual states to usc writing supplement decide what is lizzy stanton, or is not considered obscene. Where Roth v. Usc Writing Supplement! United States fails, however, is under the commerce clause , which states that the U.S. government maintains legal authority over interstate commerce regarding material that moves in marshalls ave y, between states. This is why someone often violates state laws when buying illegal material in their own state, but federal laws when they travel across state lines to engage in illegal activity.

By its nature, online material posted online crosses state borders, making who has jurisdiction over obscene material posted online sometimes a bit complicated. Quite frequently, individuals get tried under both federal and state laws, meaning the posting, sharing or acquisition of usc writing supplement obscene material online is marshalls ave y, doubly troublesome for those who do it. The only caveat here relates to child pornography. In the 1990 case Osborne v. Ohio , the Supreme Court ruled that child pornography need not fit under the definition of obscenity, as it relates to usc writing the prevention of child exploitation. In that sense, child pornography is one of the only types of ostensibly obscene materials that do not actually fall under the legal definition of obscene for the sole purpose of keeping its legality fully within the purview of the federal government. First and foremost, learn your states obscenity laws and federal definitions of obscenity . What is obscene in one state may not be considered obscene in animals, another. You could be protected by your states laws, or you could be at risk for usc writing supplement breaking the law. Secondly, learn whats considered permissible on lizzy stanton, the sites youre using.

Some sites have loose rules, others rather stringent ones. In most cases, sites allow users to report material that may be considered obscene and leave it up to the website to determine whether that material is usc writing, or is not actually allowed. In general, obscenity is not a form of analysis hypothesis protected free speech under the First Amendment, so youre entering a very twisted jungle of confusing rules and state laws when you post or access potentially obscene material online. For journalists, the First Amendment clearly spells out the freedom of the usc writing press. This has long been interpreted as protections for nile river animals journalistic endeavors and writing, including newspapers, magazines, independent journalists, television news, photojournalism and other forms of media. However, the line between who is and isnt a journalist has been fundamentally blurred in usc writing, the Internet Age. No bigger issue exists on this end than the proliferation of lizzy stanton online bloggers and new media in general.

Who could be considered a journalist, and what is and is not considered the supplement press was easy to establish before the growth of the internet. If you could afford to print, and marshalls ave y you avoided the usc writing supplement nasty issues related to libel, your organization was generally considered legitimate press, and those who wrote for you, journalists. Even then, there had to lizzy stanton be a journalistic history behind your organization before you were considered legitimate. As the usc writing supplement internet grew, individuals with their own websites or space on other websites increasingly gained notoriety, publishing journalistic content, but not aligned to any larger, traditional news organizations. Were these new weblog, or blog writers, journalists? For well over a decade, there was no definitive answer to that question, although many people (mostly traditional journalists) would have said no. However, in 2014, the notorious Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that bloggers are indeed considered journalists when it comes to their First Amendment rights.

In the case Obsidian Finance Group, LLC; Kevin D. Padrick v. Crystal Cox , the who were powers ww2 court was trying to answer the question that had been nagging many bloggers and traditional journalists for some time: Are bloggers considered journalists? At issue was the fact that defendant Crystal Cox committed an act of libel, which, according to legal precedent, must be proven false by usc writing supplement, the plaintiff (in this case, Obsidian Finance Group) if the act was committed by an established journalist. If no proof can be provided, the the axis powers plaintiff has not established that libel actually occurred. In 2011, Cox lost a lower court case because as a blogger, she could not prove her journalistic credentials, e.g., that she worked for an official news organization. The Ninth Circuits decision effectively answered the supplement looming question of contrastive analysis hypothesis whether a blogger should be considered a journalist with a precedent-setting yes decision and establishing that bloggers dont need to usc writing prove it by having worked with or for established news organizations or traditional print or television media. Cox herself was no bastion of journalistic integrity.

According to court documents , the Poe's Essay blogger had a history of making false accusations against companies and strong-arming them into supplement, paying her for retractions. Engaging in this sort of activity now would quickly get a blog labeled a fake news outlet. However, according to the precedent set by the Ninth Circuit, even bloggers producing fake news must receive the same free press protections as traditional, reputable journalists. So what dangers exists for journalists when it comes to First Amendment rights online? Thankfully, those concerns have not really changed. Journalist must be concerned with reporting facts as accurately as possible Journalists must be dedicated to making corrections on stories when possible or retractions when necessary Journalists must avoid libel Journalists must avoid invasion of privacy. This tenet of journalism has remained true for Edgar Allan a century. That said, there was a time when journalism was not as clean an industry.

Yellow Journalism, the nasty, libelous and usc writing supplement fake news type of journalism that was rampant in the late 1800s, was protected free speech even then, as it still is marshalls ave y, today. Journalists can indeed lie and fabricate news. However, credibility is a major concern, especially in an overly dense market. The news industry is also jostling to stay solvent in a world moving further away from usc writing physical print, meaning traditional news organizations must find ways to compete with the millions of who were ww2 bloggers doing the same work for less money and with much less oversight and dedication to usc writing integrity. Stay true to lizzy stanton the facts, avoid opinion when possible, and maintain a strong dedication to credibility. This will ensure you stay on the right side of the First Amendment. Yes, that includes bloggers as well. Considering Americans trust in mass media is at an all-time low, this kind of neutrality is all the more important.

Part of the reason Americans do not trust journalists these days and prefer to get their news from alternative media sources relates to the unwillingness of major news organizations to quickly admit fault. Usc Writing Supplement! This is not the lizzy stanton largest part of the issue, as there are many underlying problems related more strongly to usc writing the growing desire among Americans to get news from opinionated sources that fit their own beliefs. However, part of that mistrust Americans feel resides in rampant misreporting from major news organizations. A perfect example occurred just recently with the Quebec mass shooting tragedy . Shortly after the shooting, and punk ideology before full details had emerged, Fox News inaccurately tweeted out supplement, that the mass shooter was of Moroccan origin. This turned out to be wrong, as the shooter was eventually identified as a French-Canadian man with strong right-wing ideologies. River Animals! After much pressure, more particularly directly from Canadian PM Justin Trudeau , Fox News eventually deleted and retracted the tweet , as well as published an official apology. Maintain accuracy when possible, and usc writing supplement when your facts are wrong, admit it . The need to be first is who were, important from an usc writing supplement ad revenue perspective, but it can easily lead to inaccurate reporting. When that happens and it will happen be just as fast to hypothesis print or publish retractions and corrections. While there is supplement, no First Amendment requirement to publish a retraction when there is no libel involved, winning modern media does involve staying on the right side of honesty and integrity.

Theres very little to say on this topic, other than to reiterate the point: Libel is the number one biggest constraint to freedom of the press and journalistic free speech online. Hypothesis! Thankfully, you rarely read about journalists or news organizations getting tagged with libel lawsuits, although it does occur. When it does, it typically involves rather high-profile individuals with somewhat hurt feelings. For all intents and purposes, newspapers and usc writing journalists should avoid libel like the plague. Whether intentional or unintentional, libel is not a form of protected free speech. The issue with it resides in the high burden of proof on the libeled party, which in many ways is why so few libel suits go forward, and why so many fail.

This is, unfortunately, why many news organizations tend to get away with it as well. First Lady Melania Trump is currently feeling the pinch when it comes to animals catching a newspaper on libel charges. Her court case charging the online paper The Daily Mail of libel in insinuating that she previously worked as an supplement escort was recently thrown out by punk ideology, a Maryland judge, although purely on procedural matters (the judge determined the suit should not have been filed in Maryland). While The Daily Mail actually issued a retraction only a few weeks after the original article was published online, Mrs. Trump still filed the suit , correctly claiming that the reporting of pre-existing rumors is usc writing supplement, no excuse to make defamatory comments.

In a separate defamation suit against a Daily Mail-connected blogger in powers ww2, Maryland, Trumps suit was actually a success. As of Monday, February 6th, 2017, Mrs. Trump was back at it again, refiling the usc writing supplement $150 million lawsuit in New York . This time, her goal is to prove libel occurred by inhibiting her ability to profit from her newfound visibility in the public eye. While the original lawsuit may have succeeded on its own merit, the chances of this lawsuits success may be even greater, particularly given this line of argument would not have been possible prior to Donald Trumps candidacy and subsequent presidential victory. Avoid libel or any hint of libel. Yes, its hard for marshalls ave y someone to prove a libel case in court, but that libel could easily be transferred to a case regarding damaging content where punitive damages get awarded. Reputable news sites try to avoid printing unverified rumors for this very reason. Even if what you printed never materializes into a damaging libel suit, youll still have to go to usc writing court to defend it, and that in and of itself can a burdensome expense, especially for marshalls ave y a smaller blogger or news site. Journalists have long been accused of overstepping the bounds of privacy in order to get a good story. Theres often a fine line that exists for public figures regarding what is and is not considered private, and whether someone who puts himself or herself into the public eye enjoys the same privacy rights as others. The rather high-profile case between Hulk Hogan and Gawker founder Nick Denton is a good example of this.

Gawker placed itself in the crosshairs after publishing a sex video of Hogan and supplement his best friends wife. Lizzy Stanton! The long and rather contentious legal battle hinged on the fact that, although other media outlets reported on the existence of the tape, Gawker decided to usc writing supplement actually publish the tape on its website. The court and a subsequent appeals judge ruled that Hogans privacy had indeed been invaded by Gawker, resulting in Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) receiving a judgment for $115 million in compensatory damages and a further $25 million in punitive damages . Invasion of privacy is often confused as free speech. In such a case, a publication, whether online or otherwise, may believe First Amendment rights to a free press and animals free speech may apply in publishing such information, particularly if that information has already been discussed by other media publications. Supplement! Indeed, in reporting the punk ideology tapes existence, other media outlets, such as TMZ, shared very similar attributes to The Daily Mail and its publications of pre-existing rumors about Melania Trump. However, other media outlets did not cross that very thin line between potential libel and invasion of privacy. Gawker did, exposing themselves to a lawsuit that was far easier for usc writing supplement Hogan to win. If The Daily Mail had published not only rumors about Melania Trump but also videos and images of her engaging in ww2, the practice of an escort, its quite likely she would have instead gone with an invasion of privacy lawsuit. Based on an essay from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press , the burden of usc writing proof for invasion of privacy is much lower than that of libel and defamation, given that the analysis information must be: Of a personal nature and so intimate that disclosing it would offend most reasonable people, even if it is true Not something most people in the public already knew Not particularly newsworthy Widely communicated and distributed. With its domain authority and generally high profile, Gawker opened itself up to such a lawsuit after publishing the video.

Yes, the usc writing supplement information already existed on other high-traffic sites, but those sites refrained from actually publishing the video itself, keeping them from crossing into the realm of invasion of privacy. Edgar Allan Poe's Essay! This also means that should any news organizations have verified evidence that Melania Trump worked as an usc writing escort, its probably in their best interest to sit on that information and avoid its publication at all. Invasion of privacy can be broad and often focuses on private matters of a sexual nature, although this is not always the case. While things like revenge porn tend to get people jailed for invasion of privacy in very highly-publicized cases, other invasion of nile privacy cases often receive much less attention. There are actually four types of usc writing supplement privacy invasion that can be legally prosecuted:

Intrusion of contrastive Solitude Appropriation of Name or Likeness Public Disclosure of Private Facts False Light. Invasion of supplement solitude and appropriation of name or likeness are fairly straightforward concepts and marshalls ave y are not regularly a concern for online journalists. However, how you go about obtaining information that you subsequently publish may fall under invasion of privacy if it involves impersonation and intrusion. Public disclosure and false light, however, are the two invasion of usc writing supplement privacy issues that come up against First Amendment rights quite often. Contrastive Analysis! In both cases, the person or publication publishing the information usually does so under a misguided belief that the First Amendment protects such an action. However, private facts of usc writing supplement a potentially personal and damaging nature are not protected free speech. Neither is information that may be true, but somewhat misleading, as is the case for false light, which covers such situations. Successful journalism often involves an ww2 element of shock and surprise.

When journalists uncover illicit affairs, they certainly run the risk of invasion of privacy. However, theres a keen difference between reporting about something someone did in private and usc writing supplement exposing that action for lizzy stanton all the world to see in supplement, a damaging manner. Sometimes it can be unclear where to draw that line, while at times even reporting on something overwhelmingly private, before its come into the public realm on its own, is playing a very dangerous game with privacy rights. In her book Outrageous Invasions: Celebrities Private Lives, Media, and the Law , law professor Susan Barnes explores the ways in which celebrities have lost their privacy rights, as those rights have increasingly been subverted by the guise of Edgar Allan Sorrows Essay free speech and free press. However, if the Hogan case reveals anything, its that the right to publish private information, even of celebrities and other public figures, only goes so far. Usc Writing! And we may increasingly see more celebrities suing and winning in nile river, an effort to protect their privacy. This quickly happened when dozens of celebrities had their nude photos stolen and published online, and usc writing it will happen again as more celebrities fight back and likely win cases where their private lives are exposed. For online journalists, its best to who were powers ww2 err on the side of usc writing caution. Yes, the information you may be sitting on could potentially bring in contrastive hypothesis, a lot of clicks and a tremendous amount of usc writing ad revenue. Punk Ideology! But if Gawkers example is any indication, that wont make up for the high cost of losing an expensive court battle. The very nature of usc writing supplement online activity raises far more questions than it answers.

After all, the First Amendment and the Constitution were written at a time when something such as the Internet could not have even been conceived. In no small way, the ww2 First Amendment was written with physical borders in supplement, mind. Nevertheless, the the axis powers ww2 Internet creates a borderless society, and usc writing the Supreme Court has already ruled on several cases that cement an individuals free speech rights online and, in a more general sense, the right to access information from others both nationally and internationally. Moreover, there are certain types of contrastive analysis hypothesis speech that do exist online that can, and have, caused both confusion and consternation due to usc writing supplement the increasingly social nature of the who were powers ww2 web. Usc Writing! Parody and satire materials, most notably from The Onion, have at times been shared and reshared by those who mistakenly believe the powers published satirical material is usc writing, true.

While some throw charges that satire is a subtle way of publishing lies with impunity, others argue that it is a protected form of speech just as any other. How, then, does the First Amendment protect these two areas: satire/parody , and international communications ? In both cases, the powers very existence of the usc writing internet as a means of lizzy stanton communication muddies the once-clear waters for how such communication is treated. First Amendment in International Waters. Part of the usc writing supplement beauty of the First Amendment is in the simplicity its language. Who Were Powers Ww2! By avoiding specific words or phrases that might limit its understanding, the First Amendment allows for easy definition and redefinition in changing times, without inhibiting the very nature and spirit of the supplement words. This has never been more evident when it comes to analyzing how free speech, free press and free expression work in an internationally-connected cyberspace.

Indeed, many individuals using the internet are increasingly doing so to connect with peers overseas. This is accomplished via communicating and sharing information on websites hosted outside of the U.S., while also allowing international citizens to make and utilize sites that are hosted on American soil. But does the First Amendment still protect a U.S. Punk Ideology! citizen who, for example, posts comments on usc writing, a British or German website? And is a Swedish or Japanese citizen protected under American First Amendment rights when posting or sharing information on a U.S. Who Were The Axis Powers! website? The answer to that lies in interpretations of the First Amendment that have existed since the late 1700s. In his 2010 article for the William and Mary Law School, Territoriality and the First Amendment: Free Speech At And Beyond Our Borders , Timothy Zick writes that there are, in effect, three First Amendments based on supplement, interpretation: the intraterritorial, the territorial, and the extraterritorial, (p. 1545). In his piece, Zick focuses specifically on the two that most apply to online information flow from an international perspective: the contrastive analysis territorial First Amendment, which is an usc writing supplement interpretation of river free speech as it comes up against the U.S. border (both real and supplement imagined), and the extraterritorial nature of the river First Amendment, which explores how the First Amendment affects both U.S. citizens sharing information overseas and international citizens in usc writing supplement, general. Zicks scholarly analysis of the topic, covering both extraterritorial and territorial free speech, can be best understood by his summary on the issue early in his article:

As noted, the First Amendment is lizzy stanton, certainly less territorial as a result of recent political and judicial judgments. That trend is likely to continue. As policymakers continue to recognize that Americans informational, commercial, educational, cultural, and artistic interests do not stop at the waters edge, the First Amendment will continue to become more cosmopolitan in character. Political and judicial interpretations of free speech, press, and association guarantees will embrace and facilitate the cross-border flow of information. Although territorial governance remains intact and likely will so long as there are states.

Governments will also likely continue to experience diminished capacity to supplement control cross-border information flow. Nile Animals! In the globalized and supplement digitized era, the most important First Amendment questions will likely relate to the First Amendments extraterritorial domain. The First Amendment may become more cosmopolitan in this realm as well, in terms of its influence beyond U.S. borders. However, the United States obviously cannot unilaterally export First Amendment norms and principles abroad. Moreover, courts are likely to remain hesitant to lizzy stanton expand First Amendment guarantees beyond U.S. Usc Writing! borders.

Indeed there are constitutional, diplomatic, theoretical, and other obstacles to further expansion of the extraterritorial First Amendment. But these are not insurmountable. The contours of the extraterritorial First Amendment are still developing, and there are avenues for further expansion. Of course, extraterritoriality may work in more than one direction. Allan Poe's Essay! Legal, social, and political forces may bring foreign speech regimes to U.S. shores. Hence the usc writing First Amendment may also become cosmopolitan in the sense that it must compete with and lizzy stanton may be influenced by other speech regimes. The question is whether, as a result, the First Amendment will lose some of its exclusive and exceptional intraterritorial domain, (pp. 1549-1550). To put this into laymans terms, Zick believes that the First Amendment rights to free speech protect both U.S. citizens and usc writing international citizens, regardless of which direction that information is flowing. Nile! As Zick states earlier in the piece, U.S. policy has long held that the First Amendment is an inalienable right, not just for U.S. citizens, but for everyone. That policy has been expressed at times as a means to an end, such that the usc writing U.S. exports free expression and allows others to access information produced within the U.S. so freely to help further those long-held beliefs.

That said, when Zick digs into the details, he makes some interesting conclusions. Allan Sorrows! One is supplement, that U.S. citizens do have a right to have access to the axis ww2 foreign ideas and beliefs, although the government also maintains the right to deny entry to foreigners who want to share those beliefs. These seemingly incongruous definitions were both defined within the decision of the same 1972 court case, Kleindienst v. Mandel . Applying that court case decision to today, we can assume that the usc writing First Amendment protects online users rights to access information coming from U.S. websites and foreign websites, but it does not protect the rights of foreigners who want to send that information to who were the axis ww2 U.S. citizens via online networks. Indeed, at any time, the U.S. government could decide to supplement cut communication channels from foreign nationals in, say, Iran, without infringing on U.S. citizens First Amendment rights, or any rights of the analysis hypothesis Iranian citizens as well. As far as the First Amendment extending to activities that occur outside of U.S. Usc Writing Supplement! borders, this boils down mostly to whether or not foreign governments want to Poe's Sorrows enforce U.S. First Amendment rights for both their own citizens and U.S. citizens engaging in activities outside of U.S. borders. In effect, foreign governments have no obligation to protect European allied citizens under U.S. First Amendment rights, nor are they obligated to do so for U.S. citizens.

Furthermore, when a U.S. citizen engages in speech or expressions on a website hosted in another country, he or she may be exposed to legal repercussions under that countrys law . Still, it falls to U.S. courts to determine whether or not to aid foreign countries in their pursuit of activities that are not protected free speech in that country but are protected under U.S. Usc Writing Supplement! laws. Depending on the nature of the activity, the analysis hypothesis U.S. Supplement! may or may not choose to proceed with the animals requisite compliance, although that U.S. citizen may be barred from entry into usc writing, that country. While the internet certainly makes interpreting free speech laws all the lizzy stanton more difficult, there are some certainties that still apply. Foreign nationals are only protected under U.S. Supplement! First Amendment rights to a limited degree, and only when engaging in activity within U.S. borders. U.S. citizens are only protected by lizzy stanton, U.S. free speech laws within the border as well, although a certain amount of reciprocity does exist between the supplement U.S. and many European allies.

Still, the U.S. borders, however soft they may be in an online space, still exist. If the 2016 presidential election made one thing clear, its that internet denizens are having some difficulty distinguishing real news from fake news . While parody and Edgar Sorrows Essay satire are not exactly fake news in the sense that theyre complete fabrications purposefully intended to mislead and stir up trouble, this has placed the time-honored practice of satire back into the spotlight. Is satire a form of protected free speech in an age where so many people seem to be gullible enough to not only believe and share it with their friends but act on it as well? The short answer here is that yes, satire and parody are still as protected in an online space as they ever were outside of supplement it. That said, parody and satire do have a certain constitutional litmus test in order to keep the creators from facing legal consequences after its production and dissemination. Based on marshalls ave y, a number of usc writing precedents set by court cases over the years, those who produce satire or works of marshalls ave y parody need to be concerned with copyrights, libel, defamation and usc writing supplement emotional distress . Writing for the First Amendment Center, Kyonzte Hughes details out several relevant court cases that helped define what is and is not protected satire and parody under the animals First Amendment.

While the usc writing supplement spread of satire and punk ideology its eventual influence on individuals who read and respond to supplement it has only been enhanced by the internet, there are currently no legal changes to how satire is understood and legislated. Legal precedent has been established with multiple cases, including Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. Lizzy Stanton! , Leibovitz v. Paramount Pictures Corporation , Dr. Seuss Enterprises v. Usc Writing! Penguin Books USA , and SunTrust Bank v. Houghton Mifflin Co . In all of Sorrows Essay these cases, the supplement issue specifically came down to marshalls ave y the arguments surrounding fair use. As most parody and satire requires the use of images, ideas, and supplement sometimes words from other sources in order to create that satire, there are many times in marshalls ave y, which that satires efficacy has been called into usc writing supplement, question, and its creators pulled into court. In many of these examples, the court has ruled in favor of the satire creators, so long as the actual content contains the satirized material. Courts have also reiterated that satirists are indeed allowed to punk ideology profit from usc writing their satirical material, eliminating one major concern about the marshalls ave y creation or satire and parody.

As with many situations, libel is difficult to prove in court. This holds true with satire as well. In the landmark case Hustler Magazine, Inc. et al. v. Jerry Falwell , the elder Falwell sued Hustler Magazine for depicting him as having had a drunken, sexual encounter in a satirical advertisement. Usc Writing Supplement! Hustler in several locations within the marshalls ave y magazine pointed out that the advertisement was fake and satirical. The case went through several courts hands, with the lower courts deciding that, while libel, defamation, and supplement invasion of animals privacy were not at supplement, issue, Falwell did have a right to recompense for who were the axis ww2 emotional distress.

However, the Supreme Court reversed that ruling, stating that public officials and public figures could not collect damages from such instances without proving that the publication contains a false statement of fact which was made with actual malice, i.e., with knowledge that the statement was false or with reckless disregard as to whether or not it was true. In the case of Hustler Magazine, the supplement advertisement did not fit that definition, as its use of Falwells image in the ad was clearly satirical, however hurtful it may have been to his emotional status or image. This is not to say that some satire cannot be sued successfully on Edgar Essay, libel charges. Usc Writing Supplement! However, the marshalls ave y burden of proof for this has always been difficult, and usc writing supplement it becomes even more difficult when a publication produces content within the realm of satire and parody, and even more so when that figure is well-known. Hustler Magazine, Inc. et al. v. Jerry Falwell revealed that those on the receiving end of particularly biting satire may indeed feel the need to file a lawsuit for punk ideology emotional distress. However, the Supreme Court was fairly clear in usc writing, its ruling in this case, at least as far as it extends to public officials or celebrities. Private citizens, however, may find some legal relief if they do end up as the subject of parody. The Technology and Marketing Law Blog notes one such example, S.E. v. Chmerkovskiy , in which an who were the axis ww2 obese person with Down Syndrome became the subject of a particularly derisive and embarrassing internet meme. Memes themselves are often considered satire or parody. In this case, S.E. sued three parties: the usc writing supplement photographer, CBS and CBS News, which posted the meme picture on its website. The lawsuit charged all three with misappropriation and Sorrows Essay emotional distress. Usc Writing! The photographer and CBS settled out of court, while the who were powers third party, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, of Dancing with the Stars fame, was successfully sued using the invasion of usc writing privacy false light doctrine.

Much of this, of course, is a distinct reminder that celebrities do indeed have realistic limitations on their free speech, some of contrastive analysis hypothesis which is written into the law. However, even celebrities can find some solace in usc writing, their free speech protections, though they may not find it when satire is involved.

What The Top Consulting Firms Look For in Resumes #038; CVs. Even if you have already secured your interviews, you should still read this article, because it explains why you were selected, what biases the firms have, and what areas of concerns the firms may have that they will likely test you on supplement, during the punk ideology, in-person interview. In other words, what follows is an explanation of how the usc writing, consulting firms think about recruiting new consultants. Once you understand this psychology, it makes everything the firms do very predictable . Keep in mind, these resume tips apply only to strategy consulting firms (as opposed to IT or HR consulting firms) such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain, AT Kearney, LEK, etc. In addition, my comments are largely true regardless of Allan which level position you are applying to (analyst, associate, APD, experienced hire, etc..)

To start, let me dispel one myth: Resume Format. Many people obsess over how the resume is formatted. The truth is the words on the resume matter more than font size, columns, or margins. Simple example, if I see a resume that has the wrong margins but the resume says, Harvard University, #1 in usc writing supplement, Class, Physics (okay, I'm not even sure if Harvard ranks or has a physics degree). I will notice the resume. So the first big takeaway is this: WHAT you say matters more than how you FORMAT what you say. In screening resumes, I have seen dozens if not hundreds of formats. Many different formats can work.

The most important thing is the major accomplishments are easy to read. Here is what the big firms are looking for: 1) Big Brand Name Employers or Schools. 2) Academic Performance (GPA) 3) High Standardized Test Scores in marshalls ave y, Math.

4) Evidence of Leadership and People Skills. 5) High Achievement Career Experiences (Proportional to Length of Career) Keep in mind, these are resume criteria for ALL levels of consulting, not just post-college roles. Let me explain WHY each one is usc writing, important. 1) Big Brand Name Employers or Schools. To be blunt, the top consulting firms are school snobs. Punk Ideology! They like big brand name educational institutions for the simple fact that it impresses clients. If you're an Associate making $150,000 - $200,000 USD per year, your employer is supplement, probably billing you out to clients at punk ideology, $600,000 USD/year. That's $50,000 USD/month. The client is usc writing supplement, going to marshalls ave y want to know what and who they are getting for that kind of money.

When the answer is John or Jane Doe, who has a BS from Dartmouth, a MD from Yale and MBA from usc writing, Harvard, clients respond with an marshalls ave y, Oh wow. that's impressive comment. It makes it easier to get new clients to usc writing say yes. Now plenty of people get into the top firms (McKinsey included) that do not have such a perfect ivy pedigree. but if you got it, make sure it is OBVIOUS (it will help a lot). Let me explain the thought process of some of these biases. The thinking is punk ideology, that only super high achievers get into the top schools. and the top firms really like hiring super high achievers. This is usc writing, not to say that the firms do not hire from non-target schools (they do), but they assume the contrastive, highest achievers from non-target schools will work really hard to contact the firm (generally via networking) -- thus demonstrating their determination. (There is a lesson here. If you do not have a super pedigree, you'd better be super determined, as evidenced by the amount of effort you put into networking.) In addition, it is supplement, very expensive for the firms to marshalls ave y do on usc writing supplement, campus recruiting.

So they stick to Allan Sorrows schools where the usc writing supplement, offer rate vs. applicant ratio is high (high being defined as greater than 1%). For example, Stanford (undergrad) is river animals, a target school and my year, 400 students applied for full time jobs, 6 offers were extended. and this was considered a very successful recruiting ratio by usc writing McKinsey). As a point of reference, when I was recruited by McKinsey, I heard a rumor that the firm spent $100,000 USD in recruiting expense to hire ONE Business Analyst. This figure included all billable hours of interviewers and consultants who go to on campus recruiting events as well as hard costs for contrastive travel, renting conference rooms, hotels, etc. The recruiters or resume screeners also look for recognizable employer names. It is easier to usc writing supplement understand a candidate's accomplishment via the implied credibility of the employer name and it is also easier to who were powers ww2 convey to clients. It is the same reason everyone wants to work for MBB - McKinsey, Bain or Boston Consulting Group -- it implies something on your resume that stays with you forever. To this day, I am known as a Stanford Grad and an Ex-McKinsey Guy. It is how I am introduced formally or informally when I give speeches. It stays with you for a very long time. Let me give you a personal example that helps illustrate the importance of the big brand name on your resume.

When I applied for consulting internships in my junior year at Stanford, I got rejected across the usc writing supplement, board -- not a single interview. The following year, I got interviews with every major consulting firm that I applied to lizzy stanton -- with no exceptions. I got interviews at McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Booz, LEK, AT Kearney, Monitor (since acquired by Deloitte), Oliver Wyman (formerly Mercer), and usc writing supplement, a few others. (I also got offers from every consulting firm I interviewed with except BCG where I got rejected in round 1, and Booz when I decided to cancel my final round.) So what did I do in the 12 months that made such a big difference? Well I looked at who got interviews (most were friends of mine) and tried to marshalls ave y figure out why they got interviews.

Their GPAs were identical to mine. Their areas of academic study were identical to mine. The only thing I noticed was many of them had worked for well known companies the usc writing, prior summer, and I had not. I decided to focus on improving the brand name factor on my resume in two ways. First, I did an internship at Merrill Lynch during the school year. I worked in the evenings doing telemarketing cold calls to wealthy families in Silicon Valley selling tax free investment income opportunities (LOL. I still remember my phone script, I said it so many times). By the way, this was an unpaid internship. so I worked for about 4 months every other night making cold calls for Merrill. just so I could put Merrill Lynch on my resume.

This decision was very deliberate as almost nobody else my year did an internship during the academic year. Second, I was able to get an internship with a big company (now called ATT) for lizzy stanton that summer. So when I applied again my senior year, I now had two big brand name employers on my resume, whereas just 12 months earlier I had none. As I mentioned earlier, the following year, I got interviews with every consulting firm I applied to, in large part because of the usc writing supplement, brand name employers on my resume (I was competing against 400 other Stanford students -- we all had the famous school on punk ideology, the resume so that was not a differentiator). Similarly as a resume screener, many of usc writing supplement us would read resumes with a big red marker. All we would do for hours was skim resumes while circling certain brand names on marshalls ave y, the resume that jumped out as recognizable or impressive. 2) Academic Performance (GPA)

The top firms want to know if you are smart. Usc Writing Supplement! It helps to put your GPA on your resume. If you do not, they will either 1) ask you for it anyways and write it by hand on your resume after you submit it, or 2) assume it is Allan Essay, low and assess your resume accordingly. If your school's grading system is not well understood by others, you should explain the grading scale your school uses. Most US schools use a 4.0 GPA system - perfect marks is supplement, a 4.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0. If yours is different or you are applying from one country to an office in nile, a different country, then you want to usc writing supplement put on your resume some way for the reader to punk ideology interpret your GPA (put your rank or put your %. like top 1% of class, something along those lines).

For applicants coming out of college, many firms will ask for your transcript to see your specific grades on usc writing supplement, specific classes. In particular, they are looking for your grades in quantitative classes. Oftentimes your resume will be read by a recent graduate from your school. Punk Ideology! So if you went to Stanford and usc writing, took Geology 101, the reader is going to know that you took Rocks for Jocks (the nickname for that class amongst Stanford students) and interpret your grades accordingly. Again there is marshalls ave y, not a cutoff and the standard will vary by school. Amongst the supplement, top undergraduate institutions, a 3.5 GPA or higher is good enough to not get disqualified from the process purely because of GPA. The resume reader will most likely read the rest of your resume before deciding. My GPA at punk ideology, Stanford was 3.5 at the time I applied to the major firms. so nowhere near perfect, but in hindsight it was good enough when combined with other factors to get many interviews. 3) High Standardized Test Scores in usc writing, Math. Many firms will want to marshalls ave y see a standardized test score of some sort - SAT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT.

Because it is sometimes hard to compare GPAs from one university to usc writing supplement another, the standardized test score is an easy way to compare measure of one's math ability. Strong math skills do correlate strongly with the ability to think in a logical and analytical way -- the preferred thinking style that consulting firms favor enormously. Since I applied coming out of college, I had only taken the SAT (the US standardized test high school students take to apply to marshalls ave y US colleges) and I had a score of 800 on the math section (800 out of usc writing 800). It is not necessary to Allan have a perfect score, but certainly the higher the better. There is no absolute cut-off as it depends on the impressiveness of the rest of your application. Usc Writing Supplement! That being said, outperforming 95% of other test takers is ideal if applying to the top 3 firms. Who Were! The standard is not as high with other firms. 4) Evidence of usc writing Leadership People Skills.

Being smart (factors #2 and #3 above) is not enough to do well as a consultant. You also need to be able to lizzy stanton work with clients who sometimes do not like you or resent you. So one of the things most firms look for is some evidence of people skills or leadership skills. The firms want to know you can handle a difficult interpersonal situation -- especially any one involving high stress, deadlines, inter-personal conflicts. You will get asked about these kinds of leadership scenarios in your interview. They also look for it in your resume and consulting cover letters too. If you have these experiences, PUT IT IN THE RESUME.

It is usc writing supplement, a big mistake if you do not. These experiences can include: * Specific experiences at a particular job (especially people-skill type accomplishments that might not normally be valued by Edgar Poe's Essay other employers in usc writing, that industry, but would be valued by powers ww2 consulting firms.) The more technical your background, the more important it is to emphasize these leadership and people skills. If you have a PhD in Physics from MIT and have been published 10 times, this is no guarantee of an interview. Here's why. With a PhD in Physics from MIT, it is usc writing, assumed you have the analytical skills to do the quantitative aspect of the consulting job. But now the firms want to know if you can work with people. or if you are a brilliant but arrogant ass.

In your resume or CV, you want to marshalls ave y deliberately emphasize team work opportunities, leadership experiences, public speaking experiences, conflict resolution, people management, and team management type experiences. Now if you had a PhD in Physics but also did sales jobs to pay your bills during school and you were the top producing sales person, that would be intriguing. and clearly someone worth interviewing. In other words, you need to be the OPPOSITE of the stereotype for your area of academic study. If you are an English major, the assumption will be you are good with people but lousy with numbers. On your resume, you need to prove the opposite to usc writing be true. 5) High Achievement Career Experiences (Proportional to Allan Essay Length of Career)

For applicants of all types (undergrad, post-MBA, experienced hires), the usc writing, firms are looking for analysis hypothesis an impressive (career trajectory vs. length of career) ratio. So if you've worked 1 year in your career, they want to see 1 impressive year. If you've worked 10 years, they want to see 10 impressive years. Things to supplement emphasize in describing job experiences: * Emphasize OUTCOMES, not just responsibilities. * When possible, quantify your accomplishments with numbers.

* Don't write everything you did on the job, focus on what is most relevant to consulting firms. For example, if you have a very technical degree, really good math test scores, 4 years of work experience in a very technical field in a very technical role, it is a waste of space to spend too much time emphasizing your technical accomplishments. Use those bullets to emphasize business results (derived from your technical work), the punk ideology, financial impact, quantify the measurable change in behavior from your work (because of this new system I developed, 8,000 people now get their performance metrics through this system vs. 0 when I started, that sort of thing). If you have a liberal arts background, a liberal arts major, lots of extra-curricular activities where you showed you were a people person. in your job descriptions, emphasize how you built a statistical regression analysis and supplement, model to forecast prices of punk ideology Gold in the commodities market. Usc Writing! Or became a self-taught software developer in a particular job. So the key message here is this: Pick your job description bullet points strategically . You don't have space to put everything you did, so you must focus on emphasizing those things you want to convey about punk ideology each job to round out your profile. Another way to balance out which points you choose to usc writing supplement emphasize in the bullet points under each job description -- look for the unusual combo.

I remember one classmate of mine who interned at Bain. She was an English major, but took several advanced math classes -- well over river animals, my head as a Quantitative Economics Major -- and got perfect grades in each of them. That's an unusual combo. Another way to think about it is something one of my McKinsey colleagues said to me. We like to hire engineers with people skills. And we like to hire poets who can do math. If you have an unusual combination of skills, be sure that comes through in usc writing, your resume. Bust the stereotype that you might get type cast in. Thoughts on Resume Formatting. Many different formats work, but a few general common sense rules of thumb apply: * Put your education experiences at the top.

Make sure the punk ideology, name of the school you went to is easy to read. Whether you've never worked full time or have been in industry 10 years, put the usc writing, schooling at the top -- it's what resume readers look for first, so don't bury it. (If it is marshalls ave y, buried, it is usc writing supplement, assumed that the school name must not be impressive.) No matter how long you have been out of lizzy stanton school, put a standardized test score in the education section of your resume. If it is missing, the assumption is it must be low (otherwise you would know to put it). * List your career experiences in chronological order (most recent job at the top, following education) -- make sure employer names are easy to read. * Keep the resume concise -- 1 page for anyone with little work experience, 2 pages max for usc writing supplement experienced hires. * Use bullets to punk ideology save space.

Keep the points short and to the point. A good rule of thumb is 2 - 4 bullets per job experience, ideally most bullets being 1 line long. * Make sure the font size is easy to read. Since a size 11 font will vary depending on which font is used, just make sure the reader can read it. * Make sure to bold all school names and employer names. No need to bold your job titles. Recruiters look at employer name first, job title second. Emphasize the things that will catch a recruiter's eye first, draw them into reading the resume, and then discovering everything else you have to offer.

If you worked for a no name employer, but all your clients were famous. list the client names (possibly bold them too. might be a little over the top, but at least it will get seen). So if you worked for John Doe Consultants. but the client you worked with most was Bill Gates or the founders of Google, say that! This is not resume writing, it is marketing! * Do NOT include everything you ever did in your life. The point of a resume is usc writing, NOT to write a personal biography. The point is to SELL YOU. The key to sales in any format (resume, cold call, powerpoint, sales meeting) is to just show what the Edgar Sorrows Essay, customer, or in usc writing supplement, this case employer, cares about. * Use language and Poe's Sorrows Essay, descriptions that the resume reader will understand. Usc Writing Supplement! If you did your school work in Spain, but are applying for a job in Paris, do not assume the recruiter in nile river animals, Paris will know what a 9.5 GPA is. explain it is a 9.5 (out of 10.0) GPA. If you won an equivalent of usc writing a Nobel Prize in who were powers ww2, your field, say won XYZ Award - awarded to 1 person out of 10,000 applicants.

These are phrases that any resume reader can understand. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE AUDIENCE before you write your resume. Do NOT assume they have the sufficient background to appreciate your accomplishments, you need to supplement explain them on your resume. Good luck on your recruiting process. To get access to these free resources, just fill out the form below: Note: All registrations require you to confirm your email address. Please type your email address carefully, entering your email also subscribes you to my Case Secrets Email Newsletter. This article was great Victor! The breakdown and examples were especially useful. I follow your site fervently and find your insights and marshalls ave y, advice really authentic. I have a few questions if you would be able to supplement give me some advice. I would absolutely love to work at Mckinsey (NYC office, because that is where I am from).

I dont plan on applying anytime soon but am trying to steer my career strategy towards an lizzy stanton, eventual move into Consulting. I am currently working for a fortune 100 engineering company (Deere Co.) as a Product Engineer and am planning to supplement get a Mba from hypothesis, one of the top 5 schools. My concern is if I do make it to the one of the schools and then apply for usc writing supplement a spot at Mckinsey, would my company and lizzy stanton, Mba school be enough brand naming for supplement me to be considered? In regards to GPA, my undergraduate GPA was quite low although I still managed to acquire a job at Deere which is consistantly considered a top engineering company. Also I went to a top 10 Engineering school (Purdue University), but not top 3 like MIT. Who Were Powers Ww2! Would these things be detrimental to my future application? I will have about 3 years of work experience by the time I am ready to start my Mba. Usc Writing! I was hoping that if I can secure a high GPA at the top Mba school, then I could use that for my GPA on Edgar Poe's Sorrows Essay, the resume.

Lastly I feel that I have great social skills in addition to my analytical prowess due to me being an Engineer. Although I am quite technical I have a varying array of interests, ranging from quantum physics/mathematics to economics to immigrant identity in the western cultures to cultural/social processes of supplement thought in eastern cultures compared to punk ideology western and the art of Comedy. Would any of this be relevant to making me stand out as unique? Im sorry for the obnoxiously long comment lol, but I am hungry for usc writing some direction in animals, my endeavor to get back home with the great prestige and supplement, opportunity of working for Allan Essay Mckinsey and am trying to get the best strategy to usc writing do so. Thanks for all the the axis ww2, help so far.

Short answer: When you have a Harvard MBA, a lot is forgiven or forgotten. If you have a top 5 mba and do well, have a strong GMAT score, a less competitive pre-mba can be compensated for. Usc Writing! Yes, it is noticed but if the overall trajectory of your resume is strongly upwards, it can be a compensating factor. It might not be enough to get into the top 3 firms, but certainly the rest of the top 10 is a definite possibility. The GMAT score will be crucial for you. Lizzy Stanton! The interpretation you want the reader to usc writing supplement have is 1) smart enough to have gone to harvard for undergrad, but for whatever reason the the axis ww2, opportunity didnt exist for this person at that time. In terms of the low undegrad gpa at a non target school, the interpretation you hope for is the person was smart, but lazy as an undergrad and for a variety of reasons, got serious and the more recent accomplishments and test scores reflect being smart with the work ethic. You dont want the usc writing supplement, undergrad gpa to be interpreted as that was the best the lizzy stanton, person could have done. The person worked as hard as possible and the maximum performance the persons intellect was capable of was the low gpa. Now if that happens to be true, it will most likely be reflected in usc writing supplement, a gmat score in a range similar to powers ww2 the undergrad gpa.

But if the GMAT score is usc writing supplement, substantially higher than the punk ideology, undergrad GPA and the mba GPA is excellent, the supplement, interpretation (which they will never public admit) is the person was smart but lazy in college. Punk Ideology! (Or smart but suffered from illness while in college, or had some family tragedy, or some other non-intellect factor) Action Items: GMAT 720+, get into top 5 mba, graduate at top 20% of your class. This is great! But do I have no real chance at supplement, the top three firms, even if I accomplish the said action items? I have become very keen on being able to work at punk ideology, Mckinsey and from many of the supplement, stories I have read on your site it seems that people who have not gone to target schools as undergrad were still able to punk ideology work at the top 3 firms. I was under the usc writing supplement, impression that if I worked hard enough with all the nile, material and advice you provide and also network well at usc writing supplement, one of the top 5 Mba programs, that I would have a fighting chance. I mean I know that nothing is contrastive analysis hypothesis, definite, but your opinion as a former Mck interviewer is obviously very potent and relevant. If my future application with all the things I am trying to accomplish is supplement, still by your standards not up to par, I have to respect that. I know you always say that anything could happen and to find my own way is key but knowing your experience as a resume screener and marshalls ave y, interviewer, I cant help but re-evaluate. Usc Writing Supplement! Still, I do intend on trying and striving towards a spot at the top and the axis, if it doesnt happen then I will still have all my accomplishments to fall back on. Usc Writing Supplement! Anything you can give me so to Sorrows bolster my future candidacy would be of immense worth and focus, this is the path I have set out and my determination to usc writing supplement go to Mck is absolute.

Thanks Victor for punk ideology the direction, I will fervently strive to one day be on your success stories section. Hi Victor! As an undergraduate student applying for consulting internships for next summer, I found this article incredibly helpful. I have one question about the standardized test scores I have 5s on both Calculus AP tests and usc writing supplement, both the language and literature AP tests. Analysis! These scores are better than my SAT scores in math and critical reasoning would it be acceptable to use my AP scores on my resume for the standardized test section? Hey Victor, I have been reading your articles all summer and they are super insightful! Question: Would any of the usc writing supplement, firms hire someone with a B.A. majoring in Biology and English who is medical school bound? I am going to medical school September 2015, and have a gap year. Marshalls Ave Y! I ultimately want to work in a place like McKinsey after pursuing an MD and supplement, getting some clinical experience.

How should I proceed? Do you have any advice on moving from IT/HR consulting to nile Strategy consulting? Outside of usc writing supplement going back to get an punk ideology, MBA or other advanced degree, Ive heard the paths are extremely limited. I have an undergrad degree in aeronautical engineering from an overseas university with a 7.00/10.00 GPA, and usc writing, Im currently working on lizzy stanton, my Masters in Aerospace Engineering at Penn State University. My GPA will only usc writing supplement, be around 3 when Im done, however I have 710/800 in Quants and contrastive, 700/800 in usc writing supplement, Verbal from marshalls ave y, my SAT in senior year of high school. I also have 800/800 in Quants and 740/800 in Verbal on the GRE when I applied to usc writing supplement grad school.

I have realized only after coming to grad school that engineering isnt what I really want. I have pretty good critical thinking and analytical skills. And I have been told my communication skills are very good too. Punk Ideology! I have been thinking hard about consulting over the past several months and I think consulting would be a great fit for me. What do you think are my chances of usc writing getting a top 10 company to punk ideology give me an interview shot with the above criteria? What else besides the usc writing supplement, GRE and SAT scores would I need to offset that bad GPA? Im looking to attack all other areas of analysis my profile as much as possible so I would really appreciate your feedback on this. Thanks! Thank you for usc writing supplement this great site too! Helpful and insightful article.

You have answered all my questions. I have fired blanks all the who were the axis powers ww2, time with Consulting companies though I considered myself well suited Executive management experience more than 15 years management and project management experiences, two masters degree one cum laude from private college in my home country. Re-reading your article suggest, i have no chance in hell in landing that consulting career with a big consulting house. What a pity. Should post-college graduates abridge resume to 1 page?

In terms of resume length, the rough rule of thumb is one page per decade of post college work experience. I am working as a procurement research analyst in usc writing, a start up company in India. The company I work for is 8 years old but all our clients are billion dollar global companies including the fortune 500 companies. I have 3 years work experience after an marshalls ave y, MBA from usc writing, a state level top b-school. Marshalls Ave Y! I am aiming at the big 4. Do I have a chance? Resume might not be as impressive as Harvard but I will give my best in the interview. My question is am I even in the race? Its hard to tell. The easiest test is to look at supplement, other graduates for your business school to see if any are working at the too 4 consulting firms.

Just wanted to give you some Kudos for nile river that helpful article. Greetings from Germany, I am a mech engineer with a Masters from usc writing, a top 15 school in the US and a bachelors from punk ideology, a top 10 (non-IIT) school in India. Usc Writing Supplement! I moved into IT through a scholarship by NIH and lizzy stanton, have been with a not-for-profit managing their entire IT department (13 million) since. Ive been admitted in usc writing supplement, SBS (Oxford) for a MBA.

What are my chances of working with one of the top three consulting firms? Does a not for Edgar Allan Poe's profit background and non-branded background rule me out as a candidate? Hey Victor, Im an supplement, undergrad at berkeleys business school but the problem is I transferred from community college. Berkeleys undergrad biz school is super hard to lizzy stanton get into, about 6% Acceptancce rate. If I do well at usc writing, berkeley will any of the top consulting firms even give me a chance? Please feel free to nile river animals be honest. Thanks. By itself, I dont think it is a deal killer. But, you will have to usc writing do well at Cal and realistically better than you normally would if you went their directly from high school.

My college roommate at marshalls ave y, Stanford was a community college transfer. Usc Writing Supplement! He was a Stanford Computer Science major with a 4.0 GPA needless to say nobody cared how he got into Stanford, only how he performed as he left. Incidentally, the story you want to imply (assuming it is true) is that you went to punk ideology community college to save money (which most consider an acceptable reason to go) but were qualified to attend an elite university (and your high gpa at the elite university is indicative of your ability to perform at a high level). The I couldnt afford it is a much more acceptable excuse than I wasnt smart enough to get in. It would help to have a super high SAT, GMAT or GRE score too.

Thank so much for the reply victor. For haas business there is a curved GPA, do you think they will take that into consideration if I dont have a 4.0? I think I should have a 3.75-3.8 is that ok? Thats pretty good if its a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) type major. Resumes get reviewed on the whole picture. Usc Writing! You dont need everything to who were powers ww2 be perfect, but if one thing is low something else on the resume needs to stand out as a compensating factor. So a low GPA with a perfect GRE score might still get considered if a good explanation for usc writing supplement the low GPA came along with it. Nile River! A less prestigious school with a #1 rank amongst all students would often still get considered.

My consulting resume toolkit includes a dozen or so resume grading calculators. You can find the supplement, link somewhere on the website, probably at marshalls ave y, the top. If everything across the board is poor, thats a deal breaker. If one thing is poor, but the rest exceptional thats a possibility. If everything is above average, thats a possibility, etc Numerous ways to get considered. Also have you ever heard of people getting a job at a top consulting firm (MBB) with a lower GPA? 3.5 or higher is the norm, under that would require exceptional circumstances.

I am a mech engineer with a Masters from a top 15 school in the US and a bachelors from a top 10 (non-IIT) school in India. I moved into usc writing IT through a scholarship by NIH and have been with a not-for-profit managing their entire IT department (13 million) since. Allan Poe's Essay! Ive been admitted in SBS (Oxford) for supplement a MBA. What are my chances of working with one of the top three consulting firms? Does a not for profit background and non-branded background rule me out as a candidate? The non profit background does not rule you out. The lack of brand is an issue, but can be compensated for. Oxford is a target school so that is going to be of enormous help for contrastive analysis you. The lack of brand employers can be compensated in few different ways.

If your prior work achievements were exceptional, that will help. Your performance at Oxford will be heavily scrutinized. I dont know if they track and publish school rank, but if you were in usc writing, the top 10% I think you would get interview opportunities. The final compensatory factor would be to hypothesis network, meet people in usc writing supplement, the firms you want to target, and get them to recommend to their recruiting departments to interview you. The above maximizes your chances of getting the the axis powers, interview. Then you have to supplement perform exceptionally well on marshalls ave y, the case. It can not just be an marginally acceptable performance (which someone with a stronger background might be able to get away with in usc writing, the first round), in your case it really needs to be exceptional starting in round 1 to marshalls ave y offset the perceived risk of hiring someone without a brand employer background. From an interviewers point of supplement view, it is extremely, extremely difficult to turn down a candidate in river, round 1 who did exceptionally well. Supplement! It is VERY hard to contrastive do that.

If there is a resume issue, the thinking most interviews will do is they will struggle with the decision, and supplement, then decide to pass the decision to the round 2 interviewers. I should point out I have received many emails from people with backgrounds with a perceived negative item or two (some much worse than yours). They have gotten into the top firms. BUT, and marshalls ave y, I cant stress this enough, they were EXTREMELY motivated and probably put 100 200 (the highest Ive ever seen is usc writing supplement, 300+ hours) hours into case prep and marshalls ave y, several hundred hours into supplement networking. It can be done, but the worse the resume (and I dont consider your resume bad, the Oxford piece is quite the Edgar Allan Poe's Sorrows, accomplishment but the lack of brand employers is a valid issue in the eyes of supplement consulting firms) the harder you just worker AND very importantly the EARLIER you must start. If possible start 6 and preferably 12 months earlier than when you plan to Allan Poe's Sorrows Essay interview. Usc Writing Supplement! That is one of the common traits among those who got offers from the top 3 with some kind of disadvantaged resume. Nile River! Flat out, they wanted the usc writing, offer badly and were willing to put in the effort. Thank you for your reply.

I am probably 7 months away from starting school and 14-15 months away from interviewing. What do you recommend I do to who were the axis powers ww2 get started? I am a slow learner but a hard worker so what should my first step be? Is there a course I can join or should I get started with your videos? Also, Ive heard the term networking thrown around a LOT since I got admitted. Is there a good place to learn networking 101? What should I be doing now to get placed a year later?

Thanks so much. Your reply was very helpful. Do you think regardless of usc writing supplement your grades a referral/recommendation from punk ideology, a top employee within the supplement, firm can still get you a job within the company? No. It might be possible to get a case interview opportunity based solely on the relationship, but absolutely impossible to get the job offer at the top few firms without doing well on river animals, the case. From the firms point of view, there is ENORMOUS risk in putting someone without certain skills in front of a client. The fear is that one mis-hire could ruin the reputation of the entire firm by usc writing supplement saying something really stupid (e.g., in punk ideology, the firms eyes that would be stating a conclusion that is logically and factually incorrect). When I was a McKinsey consultant, if I made a major error with a client, it will not be described as Victor made a mistake, it will be described by the client as McKinsey screwed up. THAT is why the firms are so intensely focused on the case interview. Supplement! That are totally paranoid about the scenario I just described.

Hey Victor, thanks for letting me know. What books do you recommend for case interviews? Or any tools that would help with acing case interviews? Thanks. Im a bit biased on this one. Marshalls Ave Y! I recommend my own book Case Interview Secrets. Usc Writing Supplement! For more advanced training, my Look Over my Shoulder program is very effective. It contains recordings of 20+ hours of actual case interviews with candidates with my real time analysis and critique of the candidates performance. It also specifically compares the analysis, differences between poor, average, and exceptional case interview performance so you can see, hear and experience the differences between performance levels. Also if you do well in your interview (that is if you got an interview through an employee) and your grades arent top notch, say maybe a. 3.4-3.5 can you still secure a job at one of the three (MBB)?

Yes absolutely. I had a 3.5 GPA coming out of Stanford. I would really try to get or keep your GPA at supplement, 3.5 or higher. It also depends on the selectivity of your school. So a person with a 3.5 GPA from an ivy would get looked at and could get in if they did well on the case. Punk Ideology! Someone from a top 200 university would be expected to have a higher GPA to usc writing compensate for lack of ivy. The same is true if the major is not technical or math oriented. Nile! An English major is expected to have a higher GPA than an engineer because the bias in consulting is usc writing, that math oriented majors are harder than the liberal arts oriented one. Hi victor, I have an upcoming interview at punk ideology, Bain for a summer associate intern position but Im struggling to find the appropriate review and prep materials. Do you think case in point would be a good place to start?

Or is usc writing supplement, it a bit advanced for lizzy stanton a summer intern interview? Do you recommend any additional materials other than your videos (which are awesome btw!!) but Im just stressing and want to be as prepared as possible. Usc Writing! Thanks!! There is very little difference between undergrad intern and MBA level case interviews. Marshalls Ave Y! The standard is high mainly because clients demand it regardless of whether a consultant is an usc writing, intent, and undergrad, or a MBA. Logic is logic. Math is math. Edgar! Accurate conclusions are accurate conclusions.

In terms of supplement resources, I would recommend the following listed in punk ideology, increasing order of cost. My free videos and email newsletter. My Look Over My Shoulder Program recordings and analysis of 20+ case interviews with actual candidates Doing 1:1 practice with a case coach (a former Bain, BCG or McKinsey interviewer) In addition I would recommend up to 50 practice interviews with a practice partner. If you dont have one locally you can search for one at I would recommend practicing with partners after LOMS and usc writing supplement, before using case coaching.

Oh also sorry I forgot to mention Im an undergraduate not an lizzy stanton, MBA student. Thanks! Thank you for usc writing supplement the helpful advice. I have sent an Edgar Allan Poe's, online application to supplement Deloitte for their NextGen Leaders program and their minimum GPA requirement is a 3.2 according to hypothesis their website. I am currently a community college student that will be transferring to a CSU in usc writing supplement, the fall. Im anticipating a 3.4 overall GPA at the time of transfer. Who Were Powers Ww2! Is that worthy for a community college student that is prior military with no extra curricular work? Any advice or recommendations to help myself stand out?

Thank you. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota majoring in B.S Economics. I do have internship experiences in equity research, consulting and usc writing supplement, investment banking. My current GPA is 3.5. However, I do not think my school brand is nile animals, well know comparing to those Top schools. Also, two of the internship experiences that I had is from China which I think its not a big brand for US employer. The other one that I am working ( Consulting Intern) is a small consulting firm in Minneapolis which it is not really well known big brand as well. 1.Is that mean I am in really disadvantage situation among those applicants 2. Supplement! Do you have any recommendation for me to improve my chance of Edgar Sorrows Essay being accept into the firm ? Hi Victor, I have been working in science research / project management for usc writing several years, but am now looking to lizzy stanton switch into MC.

Do you have any advice on supplement, additional ways to who were the axis ww2 enhance my resume and training prior to applying? My education background includes a Masters (science) from Cambridge. Usc Writing! I have also previously started an entrepreneur business venture. If Ive had a total of 6-7 experiences (including pre-undergrad full time work and lizzy stanton, college internships). Is it necessary to include everything in supplement, my resume? An interviewer (non-US, non-top 50) brought it up during an interview and said I should, even if it means exceeding the recommended 1 page length. Also, say I am working for a startup that isnt doing that great and so decide to take another job (while still working for the startup), do I need to mention both as my current experience in lizzy stanton, my resume? What I am trying to understand is if a resume is indeed just a marketing document where you provide only the usc writing supplement, most relavent information or if its mandatory to punk ideology list every position youve ever held. Just for usc writing supplement full disclosure, I always mention all my work experiences during the interview process itself (I am not really trying to hide anything). Thanks a ton. Really appreciate the help.

I think most people are somewhat split on this decision. I personally see the resume as a marketing document. Edgar Poe's Sorrows! Everything on there should be accurate, but I personally think it is usc writing supplement, fine to exclude things that arent relevant. For example, I do some volunteer work at my kids school. I helped them remove weeds from the garden next to the playground. Punk Ideology! One could argue it is a job.

But it isnt relevant to my reader. Depending on your experience level, its customary to include coursework you took in school though not practical to list every course. Thats my personal take. Again, a number of people will disagree with this point of view. You should make your own decision on this based on what you are comfortable with. First of all, I really appreciate everything you put on the website. All of usc writing supplement it is very useful and immensely informative. I d0 have one question that I am curious about.

My resume lists all of the lizzy stanton, things you listed above: A high GPA while committing over supplement, 40 hours a week to coaching/volunteering with various organizations. A big brand name internship as a sophomore, where I did some pretty meaningful things (as meaningful as an intern can do). Plenty of leadership/team experience. I havent taken a GMAT/SAT ever (took ACT as a sophomore in nile animals, HS), but feel confident about my ability to do well on them if I were needed to list them. However, I go to The Ohio State University, which is not exactly prestigious (although it is usc writing, climbing up the rankings every year Go Bucks!). Whats the who were the axis powers, likelihood that my resume hits the trash folder because of the usc writing supplement, name of the school at the top? Is there anything I can do to still get an contrastive, interview opportunity despite my school not being top 10?

Lots of networking, I presume? If I dont get a job because I interview and perform worse than the people they hire, I can sleep easy at night. Its going to nag at me if I dont even get a swing at the plate because of my school. Anything youve got would really be appreciated. Your assessment of the situation is fairly accurate. Supplement! There is a huge bias against non target schools. Networking is the key and also targeting in your case offices based in Ohio. You will have an easier time get a chance (though still a long shot) from someone in an Ohio office than say New York or Boston. Marshalls Ave Y! Other than, anticipate getting an informal case interview by phone or over coffee (unannounced) to determine if someone you meet wants to risk their reputation by recommending you for a real interview. You have to nail the case in supplement, the interview for marshalls ave y the interview.

You basically would have to blow them away with your case performance to provide the extra margin of comfort they would need to endorse you despite the usc writing supplement, non target school on who were the axis powers, your resume. Your article is very helpful. So my path is a bit non-traditional since I was previously a pre-med and graduated with a Neuroscience degree at UCLA. However, after a year of deliberation, I have decided to pursue the usc writing supplement, consulting path, particularly healthcare consulting. I did get an 800 in the math portion of the SATs and my quantitative skills have always been very strong but I do not have much coursework at UCLA that further demonstrates that. While I am applying to jobs, I have been considering taking some math or analytical courses that will increase my marketability. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions about my approach?

All of this is very new to me but your website has been a huge help! Thanks so much and looking forward to your response, From a consulting firms point of view, if you got an 800 on the math SAT and presuming your in major gpa in a hard science was pretty good, its safe to say you can add, subtract, multiply, divide and analysis, calculate a percentage. (Truly that is 95% of the math used in consulting). If youve taken organic chemistry (at my school that was a weeder class for premed) or any of the usc writing supplement, core science classes thats sufficient. No need to take math classes unless you want to for your own knowledge sake. If you were going to take more for you own benefit, I would recommend an intro statistics class and an intro economics class both quite useful even outside of consulting. Generally 800 math SAT is the end of the Edgar Allan Sorrows, assessment as to usc writing supplement whether or not this candidate do arithmetic. Ww2! (at least at the resume screening portion of the process). If I were screening your resume, I would presume you could do math. Usc Writing! I would be curious to see your gpa in neuroscience.

Did you excel or did you just get by? UCLA may not be a target school for marshalls ave y most firms, so to usc writing supplement be considered it would really help if you had a very high gpa from ucla 3.9 or above ideally. So the powers, lack of usc writing ivy is a bigger constraint for your background than lack of who were powers ww2 a math class on your transcript. Pardon my choice of words (but it reflects how these resume screeners think), are you UCLA average? or are you UCLA exceptional? The former probably not going to get an interview, the latter is usc writing supplement, a definite possibility.

At the ivys the presumption is the talent pool is lizzy stanton, a higher caliber, so the firms will go lower on the gpa scale. So a 3.5 Harvard is equal if not better than a 3.9 UCLA (as an illustrative example). A 4.0 UCLA in hard sciences, with 800 math SAT + a few interesting experiences with brand name employers on resume thats worth a resume reader taking a closer look. Thanks so much for your helpful article! I just have a question after reading it: Im a Stanford undergrad and have the supplement, great brand name, so now Im wondering how to differentiate myself in my extracurriculars. What sorts of extracurriculars do you think would be impressive? Im currently a chair in student council and am team lead in lizzy stanton, the Business Association of Stanford Entrepreneurial Students.

Are there other areas youd recommend I get involved in? Ive also competitively played the piano in high school (performed at Carnegie Hall and won other awards), but I stopped playing in usc writing supplement, college because I thought that student council and contrastive analysis, other leadership might be more relevant to consulting recruiting, and that continued involvement with piano might not be as important for consulting. Usc Writing! Is this true? Thank you so much! I think you are somewhat asking the wrong question. What extra curricular activities do you enjoy enough to be really good at? In general firms like activities that are demonstrate inter personal skills through actual achievement in the role. Lizzy Stanton! So a ground sounding extra curricular where you did nothing meaningful doesnt help you much. Usc Writing Supplement! If you landed a bunch of nile river animals great extra curricular titles, but didnt actually have to supplement interact with anyone in those roles, it will be very obvious at the interview that your inter personal skills seem inconsistent with the interpersonal skills your resume would imply.

So pursue meaningful opportunities that give you the opportunity to work with others and get much practice doing so. Its important to hypothesis BE good, not just LOOK good. Also to me it is impressive you played at Carnegie Hall. Its different. Supplement! Is it directly relevant to consulting? No. Does it stand out as different? Yes. Consulting firms like people who can achieve things that are hard for marshalls ave y the general public to achieve. Usc Writing! It shows a track record of focus, commitment, discipline, etc in many cases the specific field that achievement is in is less important than the fact that you achieved something difficult to achieve. If you won an Olympic medal, that too would be interesting even if not relevant.

The hard part in the resume screening part of the process (see my consulting resume toolkit for contrastive analysis more specific details and actual resume examples) is you need something that sticks out as different from the crowd. When I was at Stanford, 400 undegrads applied. My guess is 40 or so got 1st round interviews, 6 got offers. Keep in mind many of the 400 didnt even know what a case interview was. My extra curriculars were being the Photo Editor of the Daily and later the yearbook. Hardly directly relevant to supplement consulting, but it was what was interesting to Edgar Allan Poe's Sorrows me at supplement, the time, I worked 30 hours a week at it, and got to cover some breaking news events (riots/protests, vice presidential candidate announcements, etc..). The range of who gets interviews can be quite wide. Try not to over think it and to Allan game the system. Usc Writing! Instead, focus on punk ideology, developing your skills in your major as well as leadership / people skills that cross majors. Also it doesnt hurt to do what you enjoy if it means you will put more effort into it and developed greater competence at supplement, it.

On your resume, DEFINITELY put on the bottom that you played Carnegie Hall. It wont get you the interview, but if you are borderline things like that can tip things in hypothesis, your favor. How would a MPP or a MA in usc writing, Regional Studies from Harvard compare to MBA graduates if I am going into consulting after a number of years in government service from a country other than the US? (You mentioned earlier that HBS on resume will likely cause other factors to be forgotten, I assume other Harvard degrees are less prestigious?) Also, I am not sure if you are familiar with Japanese schools but how would you say Kyoto graduates compare with Tokyo grads or Keio grads vs Waseda grads? Are they on who were, par on the prestige factor or are there differences? The MPP ore regional studies from Harvard is less prestigious than the bschool. It also depends what country and office you apply to.

If you apply for the Boston office, you have no differentiation. If you apply for the Moscow office, any Harvard is better than no Harvard. Im not familiar with the Japanese universities and unfortunately would not be able to comment on that. I am currently an architecture student at one of the top ranked public schools in supplement, the US. I have recently come across the consulting industry, and, after a lot of research and thought, I have decided that consulting is an industry I would like to punk ideology go into after graduation. I am wondering what I can do to be able to prepare myself so that my resume is attractive to the Big 3 so that I can secure an interview. I still have 3 years left at supplement, school (I am in a 5 year program) and switching majors is punk ideology, not an usc writing supplement, option at this point. I have a 3.75 GPA, my math SAT was a 740, and punk ideology, I have held numerous leadership positions.

I am currently the president of the School of Architecture council, and I represent our college at the University-wide level. I am also planning on founding a community service program related to architecture this fall. I have great people skills and was voted Class Favorite and Most Likely to Succeed in high school senior year. What can I do to become more appealing to consulting firm recruits? I have no business background and usc writing, I am afraid this will hurt me. I have looked up many websites to teach myself some business terminology and concepts. There is a business certificate that we can complete along with our major, and I am wondering if this would be worthwhile. Thank you so much, I look forward to hearing back from who were powers ww2, you. If your university has a business school or campus clubs than span schools within the usc writing, university, consider jointing some business or entrepreneurship oriented ones. Yes it hurts you to not have some indication of interest in business in your background.

Certificates carry very little weight generally. The issue is two fold: 1) looking like you have interest in a business career, and 2) actually understanding basic business concepts. The first helps you get the interview, the latter to pass it. You cant be googling every term you here in an interview. Its just not practical. For the former, consider business oriented activities. Edgar Poe's Sorrows Essay! For the latter, start reading Bloomberg Business Week and Fortune magazine. The first for short news articles, that latter for indepth profile articles that go into depth about the issues of usc writing specific companies.

Google any terms or concepts you do not understand. Other options. Take an the axis ww2, intro to economics class as an elective, maybe a financial analysis class Both to add to usc writing supplement your knowledge and to indicate interest. Many free classes online on these topics as well. Hello, I was recently accepted to the No.

15 US News Business School (UT-Austin) for river animals the Part-Time program. I have 4 years work experience, a 3.3 Undergrad GPA in Aerospace Engineering (Texas AM), currently work as a Software Engineer at Dell, and a 670 GMAT (44Q, 38V). Ive taken the GMAT once before and scored a 560 (33Q, 34V), but this time, I really studied hard for the GMAT (Manhattan GMAT). I really want to enter the world of supplement management consulting at marshalls ave y, one of the Big 4 (not MBB, but Deloitte, PwC, KPMG or EY), and usc writing, plan to supplement my low GMAT with extracurricular activities (Graduate Consulting Club), networking, and the axis, planning to switch career trajectories in about a year to a hybrid engineering-finance role at Dell before I graduate. Should I retake GMAT given my profile?? Its been weighing heavily on my mind.. Thanks in advance! For MBB you really need over 700 on the GMAT. Since your goal is Big4, youre probably in supplement, the range at 670. Whether or not to retake it depends on your opportunity cost and likelihood of improving the score by a significant enough amount to warrant the effort.

My sense is retaking the lizzy stanton, GMAT is probably not a high return on usc writing supplement, investment activity especially since you said you already studied hard for it. Networking harder will probably be a better use of your time as well as rounding out your resume and hypothesis, skill set with more people-oriented activities. When I see your profile, through Big4 eyes, I cant help but wonder if I could put you in front of a client. If a client says you are wrong and does so in usc writing supplement, an aggressive or slightly combative way, will you be able to confidently and respectfully disagree and persuade the client otherwise? If a group of junior clients on the axis ww2, your team are bickering, do you have skills to smooth out the usc writing, situation? These are the larger questions that pop into river animals my mind based on your profile. I just completed my undergraduate in supplement, Business with a top notch school in India( But I am afraid no one outside India would be aware of the prestige on my institution.) I wish to work for 2-3 years, then apply for an ivy league school in USA, after which I aim to eventually get into MBB. Now the problem is, in India undergraduates are generally not offered good roles. The big firms such as MBB or big 4 only give research related jobs at this stage. And I have a offer for who were powers ww2 an analyst at a small firm.

Its a smaller name, but it is better work and it is easier to get noticed and promoted. Now, in order to supplement achieve my long term goal of top school + MBB, do you suggest I take the job at the smaller firm but better work, or should I look for a job in punk ideology, the bigger firm but bad work? For cross border careers, people with well known brand name employers on their resume have a major advantage. You have to decide if the benefit out usc writing weights the downside of potentially less interesting work. In addition, it helps to be at hypothesis, peace with your choice even if the second step of your career doesnt work as planned. No easy answers on this one.

Im thinking of pursuing a masters degree in management science instead of an MBA; simply because an MBA is longer and usc writing supplement, I do not want to work for 3 or 5 years before I do my masters. Lizzy Stanton! Would this affect my prospects of getting a consulting job at any of the MBB companies or any top consulting company? Thanks in advance. Yes. Most likely you would be slotted with the post undergrad candidates.

Having a masters with no work experience doesnt qualify you to usc writing supplement lead teams of analysts and client teams consisting of punk ideology Vice President level professionals. It doesnt negatively impact your ability to supplement get into analysis the top firms, just the level at usc writing, which your enter. Does one page CV applies to UK office applicants (from UK university)? I wanted your opinion on a quick question. Who Were Ww2! If I am listing my SAT score on my resume, would it be sufficient to supplement just include the math score? I got an punk ideology, 800 on supplement, the math but 650 in reading and 730 in writing and Im not sure if the marshalls ave y, reading score in supplement, particular would raise any kind of red flag (if other applicants resumes have for instance very high Math and reading scores). You should list the full score and all the sub scores. If you only list one sub score, they will either send it back to contrastive analysis you to complete or just reject the app assuming the supplement, others scores are too low. As an undergrad, I just wanted to contrastive analysis ask if there was any real downside to usc writing excluding the SAT score. When I had a McKinsey consultant look into the axis powers my resume (without the SAT score), he made no mention of a SAT score. I actually just graduated from college after this summer semester, and usc writing supplement, was thinking it might not make sense given I took the punk ideology, test about 4-5 years ago and have already graduated from college.

What do you think? Thank you for all your help! Much appreciated! Best case, a recruiter will call you to ask you for your numbers. Worst case, they reject you out right assuming the scores must be poor. The former is likely if everything else looks good on your resume, the latter if everything else isnt strong. On the job analytical performance is extremely highly correlated with math SAT (GMAT, GRE) scores.

Victor, I got already on my resume the big brand companies names but for a short period of usc writing time (less than a year). Would you still suggest to keep the brand companies names on Edgar Essay, my resume? Generally speaking yes as it looks better than being unemployed. If it is only for 3 months and it is not clearly an internship, then you might want to think twice. Hi. Supplement! I am a PhD student at Cambridge University, UK. Punk Ideology! I focus on tropical ecology- this is usc writing supplement, a science based subject which uses extensive statistical modelling. Prior to marshalls ave y this I completed an usc writing, MPhil in Environmental Sciences from lizzy stanton, Oxford Uni (with a 2.1) and a General Engineering degree.

I will finish my PhD in late 2016. Usc Writing! I would like to work in consulting and specifically target McKinsey. My background is pretty quantitative- perhap not as quantitative as aeronautical engineering but much more quant then liberal arts. I have not done internships ( owing to visa issues) but I have done fieldwork all over SE Asia and built useful links. Edgar Poe's Essay! I have several peer reviewed publications to my name. Should I try to gun for usc writing McKinsey? Your background seems similar to contrastive hypothesis the background of other McKinsey consultants coming out of a PhD in Europe. I dont know the UK grading system, so I cant comment on usc writing supplement, your marks. Everything else seems comparable and nile animals, I would encourage you to usc writing apply. Also the level of math used in consulting 90% of the lizzy stanton, time involves adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and usc writing, calculating percentages.

McK looks for quantitative backgrounds not because the punk ideology, math is difficult but rather because those with quantitative backgrounds think in a particular way thats very useful in usc writing supplement, consulting. I first wanted to comment on the number of posts you have replied to. Im really surprised you get back to so many people! Thats awesome and greatly appreciated. My first question is whether or not accounting is considered a quantitative enough background for consulting?

I see most applicants are in engineering, science, economics, etc. I have excellent grades and a Masters in Accounting but I wasnt sure if this was an who were the axis, automatic deal breaker. Although I have high grades, leadership, and usc writing supplement, internship experience, the school I attend has a very clear reputation as a party school and is not a target of lizzy stanton really any consulting firms (Syracuse University). Could work experience possibly compensate for this and make me a more viable candidate in the future? Thank you so much for usc writing supplement your help! Your school will be a bigger issue than your major.

Accounting isnt considered an exceptionally quantifiable field from the who were ww2, consulting firms point of view. If you had strong standardized test scores, it would be fine. Networking can compensate for a non target school, a slightly below average GPA, or some other weakness is a candidates application, but it cant compensate for usc writing supplement more than one weak spot in most cases. Id say the punk ideology, top 3 would most likely be out of reach for you. The rest of the supplement, top 10 would be a stretch (depending on your overall application) if you networked a lot and did a ton of case prep (several hundred hours between the two activities). My consulting resume toolkit has a resume scoring calculator to estimate the likelihood of your resume getting an interview. For networking advice, do a search on the site for networking and non-target school as there are several success stories from marshalls ave y, others that you can learn from. Thanks for all the useful information.

I am looking to usc writing supplement break away from science and start a career in consulting. Punk Ideology! I have a BS in psychology from Michigan State with a 3.95 gpa, and am currently working on a PhD in supplement, neuroscience from Penn State College of contrastive analysis hypothesis Medicine (3.5 gpa). 730/800 quantitative on gre (no sat got started at community college). What are my options and what firms should I be targeting? Should I try for supplement an internship while I still have time? I obtained a PhD from MIT Aerospace but my GRE was not the the axis powers, highest when I initially applied (Q700/800). Supplement! How much do you think this will work against me when applying to MBB? Should I re-take the GRE just for boosting the numbers? Or should I just focus on polishing my well-earned analytical skills and networking? A PhD in contrastive analysis hypothesis, Aerospace from MIT qualifies you do add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate percentages which is 90% of the math used in consulting.

At this point, I wouldnt worry about the GRE score. Make contacts via networking. If you are in a post doc, focus on supplement, publishing if thats a possibility for you. Punk Ideology! The general rule of thumb is firms want to usc writing see an upward sloping career trajectory. You inspired me a lot. Thank you so much for lizzy stanton providing very detailed information about the dos in usc writing supplement, a Resume. I am a Masters student (Industrial Engineering) at UIUC.

I am looking for summer internship in marshalls ave y, consulting firms. I graduated from Government College in usc writing, India. I have couple of leadership experiences and internship experiences in non-consulting background. My GRE quant score is 159/160(78 percentile) and Analytical Writing Score is 4.5/6.0. Nile! In my undergrad, I was in usc writing, the top 7% of the class. What can I do to have a career in Edgar Essay, consulting? Most of supplement your articles mentioned consulting career for undergrads, MBA and river, PhD students. What is the scope for a Masters student like me? I recently got an email from our graduate coordinator about usc writing internship opportunities in Mckinsey. Marshalls Ave Y! Could you please suggest the points I should emphasize in my Resume? Do I stand a chance to be considered for supplement the internship?

P. Punk Ideology! S: Thanks much for your book. I just got that and usc writing, it is awesome! Thanks for river animals all the great comments. Im wondering if MBB is a possibility for me- I graduated with a 3.3 gpa from Emory and majored in Economics/Math. I got a 720 on usc writing supplement, the GMAT and worked 3 years doing business analytics at contrastive, a top retailer with 1 promotion. I just joined the supplement, Peace Corps to gain some international/volunteer experience and plan on attending a top 15 MBA program after. For MBB I am concerned about my undergraduate GPA but would definitely welcome the opportunity to work in an international office if that helps my chances. Realistically, MBB is out of reach with that GPA especially from a non target school. The GPA expectations internationally are often higher, so unfortunately that doesnt help either. Who Were Powers! I would suggest targeting the next two tiers of firms.

I will be attending either LBS/Insead/Kellogg for my MBA next fall and supplement, was wondering if you could help provide some feedback/guidance on getting into MBB. Marshalls Ave Y! My background is: 700 gmat, 3.44/4.0 at a US state school, 4 years working in sales marketing roles. Does MBB have minimum gmat requirements? Also if I am unable to secure a consulting internship, are there any other actions I can take to help transition into management consulting? Greatly appreciate any suggestions you have. Thanks. Thanks for your guidance. I am PhD candidate in biotechnology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, GPA :3.9/4.

GRE: 800/800 in Quant. (May 2015, expected graduation) I have worked extensively with various teams, contributed toward 5 publications. Lead on 3 projects for first author publications in reputed peer-reviewed journal. Filed 2 patent applications. Also won 2nd place in supplement, business plan event to commercialize our technology. But since my university is not as reputed as ivy league schools, I was not sure if I can make this transition to strategy consulting. Also I do not have an Edgar Sorrows Essay, MBA or other formal business degree. Please advise if I should focus on the top firms or next tiers? Any suggestions from supplement, you would be highly helpful.

Thanks a lot, Best Regards,Ruchir Mundra. Thank you for your great articles. I am wondering if MBB is out of Edgar Poe's Sorrows Essay reach because I have not yet taken GRE or GMAT even though I have a high GPA and am finishing up my PhD at a top Canadian university. Not necessarily. Supplement! The purpose of the GMAT and GRE is to have some numerical measure of analytical skills that can be compared across candidates.

If your university and program are well known, and its analytical rigor well understood, it may be sufficient. McKinsey may ask you to take the McKinsey Problem Solving Test a kind of consulting version of the GMAT to marshalls ave y test your quantitative abilities. If you have a high GPA and a school the MBB firms recognize as a target school and your PhD is in usc writing, a technical field, the Edgar Allan Essay, lack of a GRE wouldnt be a deal breaker. Ive recently applied to MBB for summer internships and usc writing, I didnt even get an interview! I was pretty surprised because I thought I had most of the axis what was required on this article. Usc Writing Supplement! I have a little under a 3.8 GPA from an Ivy, and Im a double major in punk ideology, the hard sciences. I have a 750+ Math SAT. I have extracurriculars on campus that show leadership. The particular one Im in is very time consuming and usc writing supplement, maybe that wasnt enough just to have one? I have experience in a research lab and I networked with some people who I knew from the firm (some other people I know who had lower GPA didnt network at all and still got an powers ww2, interview at supplement, one of the firms).

I dont know where I went wrong! Do you have any thoughts? Its impossible to nile river animals know for sure. At the end of the day, a human being makes the decision and they are not 100% predictable. My best guess in no particular order:

1) resume was not formatted in ideal way such that your vitals stats were actually noticed in the first 5 seconds / the supplement, bullet points didnt use the who were the axis powers ww2, optimal phrasing of usc writing your extra curricular or work experiences. 2) your cover letter looked just like everybody else / didnt highlight your vitals in the first paragraph / didnt name drop any big brand names / didnt reference people you met at the firm you applied to. 3) your networking wasnt strong enough such that someone you met informally endorsed you behind the scenes. For what its worth, I didnt get any internship interviews either my junior year. I have been using your resources (including Resume ToolKit) for some time found it very useful. Who Were Powers! Thanks for usc writing supplement the great service you are doing. Im a PhD candidate in a Top Australian University and marshalls ave y, Im planning to apply for usc writing supplement BCG, Bain, and Accenture firms in Australia. 1. What are the differences (if there are any) in Resume and Cover letter preparation for Australian consulting firms compared to USA confirms ? 2. Can I mention about my PhD in two sections of the Resume : Education section as an academic qualification and Experience section as a demonstration of problem solving and analytical skills. For a PhD you can use a full length academic PhD including all publications (no page limit on CV) or resume.

In a resume, you can list it twice but avoid making it redundant. In experience you might focus on your research or teaching duties, in lizzy stanton, education on dates of attendance relevant test scores in your country and the like. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Science degree in Information Technology from the supplement, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Marshalls Ave Y! In the preceding to my enrollment at HKUST, I worked as a consultant analyst with IBM in India. Usc Writing! I am now planning to apply to a few management consulting firms (KPMG, Bain) since I graduate in a few months time. I have a weak GPA ( 3.5/4) and scored 320/340 on the GRE. What are my chances of landing an interview at the aforementioned firms?

Also, I will be applying to IBM for a management consulting post. Will my prior experience of working with them in India put me in a better position than other candidates inspite of my relatively inferior academic performance? Hi Viktor, thanks for the great article. I agree that all these factors make the results quite predictable. On the other hand side a big plus is marshalls ave y, always personality; whenever you can transmit that it gives you a great impact I loved your article!! I have a question though. Usc Writing Supplement! You have advised us to put people and marshalls ave y, leadership skills on usc writing supplement, our resume and said that skills related to conflict resolution and team management help. I have such experiences on-job, but dont know how to put them on lizzy stanton, resume. I cant exactly say that I resolved a conflict between A and B and thus helped the supplement, project in X way. Please advice on how to put such experiences on resume.

Use words like manager, work with colleagues, team member, etc Use words that describe how you interact with people in general. This is especially the river, case if your job title tends to imply you stare at a computer all day and dont normally interact with people. Hi Victor! I come from usc writing supplement, a Canadian university studying undergrad Mathematics at a top university in Canada. My GPA system uses percentage. What does 3.5 translate to around? Of course its different everywhere but I was curious about the standards. I thought 3.5 was like a B+? Anyways my program is very difficult, and I went through a rough year getting a 61% average.

However in 2nd and 3rd year, Ive been getting a 90% average. My gpa currently is a high 70 and Ive been doing various internships in the finance industry. Punk Ideology! Will I have a chance at MBB. I am sure if I get the interview I can make the cut, its just Im worried about usc writing my GPA and dont know how to compare since I am canadian student. Id probably work in who were the axis ww2, MBB firms in toronto if picked. Im wondering how realistic getting a job at a top consulting company would be for me. Ill graduate from Clemson University in May with a B.S. in Economics and usc writing supplement, a B.A. in French and punk ideology, International Trade. I have a 3.63 GPA and a summer internship at VCE with their Business Process Group. Supplement! I received a 720 on the math portion of the SAT and was thinking of taking the GMAT in the fall. Do you think theres hope?

For a top 3 firm, Id say no chance without a top 5 MBA. For the rest of the top 10, Id says its a maybe. Edgar Allan Sorrows Essay! Best bet would be the usc writing supplement, strategy arm of a former accounting firm with a local office near your school where alumni from your school work there. Marshalls Ave Y! If there are alumni there, its possible. I suggest getting on linkedin and doing a search between your school and those firms. If you find some, then you would want to network your way into those forms. Usc Writing! I have a networking guide available somewhere on marshalls ave y, this site that explains how. Usc Writing Supplement! With only a standard resume and cover letter to the recruiting department, I think you application would not pass the keyword filter. Your strongest asset is the math SAT score. A similar score on gmat would be confirmatory evidence.

The issue is Clemson is not a target school for most firms. But if you can find an alum working there that will get your application considered, that would be enormously helpful. I think top 11-25 and boutiques would be your best bet. Boutiques are small 10-100 person firms usually started by a partner from a top 10 firm that went out on his or her own. They typically have one office, in Edgar Poe's Essay, only one city, and focus on a single industry. Im a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University. Usc Writing! My undergraduate gpa is punk ideology, 3.9 (from a good university in China). Supplement! But my graduate gpa is somehow low ( 3.3).

Will this be a major burden when applying for contrastive consulting positions? I have a good list of publications, but not sure if it is important to the employers. Did you get an interview invite or the 3.3 GPS did not cut it? Hi, I am a prospect Oxford MBA candidate. But my GMAT is slightly on the lower side (Q45 V35). I want to work in Strategy consulting. What are my chances to break into firms such as LEK or AT Kearney or Deloitte? Do you think my GMAT is still low for these firms?

1) You mentioned that having a big-name company on your resume greatly improves your chances of usc writing getting interviewed. Edgar Poe's! Is that the case even when the position you held has nothing to do with business or consulting? Im a Computer Science major, currently pursuing my undergrad, and am aiming for a big-name tech company (Google, Apple, Facebook, etc.) internship next summer. Usc Writing Supplement! Is an internship like that likely to help me in lizzy stanton, getting a consulting position post-graduation, or should I try to get some more business-related experience in supplement, instead? 2) Standardized Tests. Sometimes when I read about punk ideology consulting I get confused on supplement, whats expected of those applying post-undergrad, as it seems like most material is lizzy stanton, written for MBAs. Usc Writing! Do firms (specifically big 3 firms) look for marshalls ave y standardized tests from undergrads? If so, does it make a difference whether they take the GMAT or GRE?

1) Yes a big brand name employer in a non business role is desirable. Its not your business experience they want. They can teach you that. They want to hire someone who has been vetted by supplement someone else and been determined to be exceptional in their field (regardless of the lizzy stanton, field). 2) More important you score high than which standardized test. Usc Writing Supplement! GRE, GMAT, SAT, LSAT, or MCAT all fine. I have three years of work experience consulting for a non-profit and a year for the World Bank. I have MPhil in Econ from Cambridge, 3.96 CGPA in Poe's, my undergrad and usc writing, 800 on my Math GRE score.

Do you think my profile is lizzy stanton, strong enough for McKinsey? Short answer is: yes. I seem to have different circumstances than most on here. I was a cop in supplement, the military for 12 years. I was in a leadership position, managing people and projects.

I earned a bachelors in marshalls ave y, Business Administration while I was in, with a GPA of 3.4, from a cheap online school. Supplement! The military stressed a degree, but they didnt care where from. Ive begun looking for a second career and have become obsessed with consulting. I dont have any delusions of punk ideology grandeur. I dont think that I will ever get a chance to usc writing be a part of MBB. However, what are my chances, realistically, with a firm like Deloitte, or PWC? 1. I have been a telecom consultant technical and strategy related for 10 years now working for lizzy stanton the biggest operators and vendors over 3 different continents. I am 33 years old. Do you think its wise for me to supplement pursue a career at management consultant at this age? I just did my MBA (Distance Learning) from Warwick.,

2. Lizzy Stanton! I was interested to buy your consulting resume package. Do you think it will be beneficial for me, considering I am going to apply for a experienced position? And is LOMS aimed to help experienced candidates like me? Ok, thats 3 questions! Most of the questions asked focus on people with MBAs and PhDs but I was wondering how consulting companies looked at degrees like MDs/DOs? I am currently a medical student and was wondering what the process would look like for me/what would you look for a medical candidate who was curious about usc writing supplement a career in consulting. Firms, McKinsey especially, do hire MD types.

They are great with health care clients. Process is similar as PhD recruiting process generally. Expectations and qualification criteria are similar. I really appreciate your time with us. Your comments are invaluable. I was curious how excellent is required by ww2 BA of top 5. I feel a lot of students have even much better experiences than mine.

I dont really have a check-able big name on my resume. Ivy/ GPA 3.7/ Master/ Not business or engineering major/ GRE V85%+ Q95% three internships in major government agencies in NYC/ did well in usc writing, finance econ market analyses engineer classes. thesis using four coding and analyses tools. founder of lizzy stanton three non-profit organizations during and after undergrad.

some athlete experience 10 years ago Do you consider it a weak one or any advice for usc writing supplement me? Thanks Victor! Based on your background, I think youd be considered at a top 3 firm. Be sure your GRE Q score is prominent on Allan Essay, your resume. Shows you can do math even if math isnt necessarily associated with your major or masters area of study. They might question why you want to work in business given your government and non-profit experience. Youd want to be prepared to answer that question. I am part time MBA candidate @ Kelley school of supplement business. Got good career progression compare to proportionate length of my career and have strong alma matter like Michigan Tech, Cummins, Kelley school of Business and currently working as Manager in Google. However, No GMAT Would that be an issue for MBB application in lizzy stanton, future?

Do you have an usc writing supplement, SAT score? The math score would be important. Theres an lizzy stanton, enormously high correlation between those with a 95%tile math standardized test score and those who get promoted at McKinsey (and other top 3 firms) after 2 years. Ive seen it myself, those with high math scores are able to follow the logic of the work. If you didnt, and they really liked you, theyd have you take one of their own internal math tests. But given the non ivy background, my guess is if the math score wasnt there, they wouldnt bother with the extra effort to get a standardized math read on your abilities. I didnt have SAT score but I scored 780/800 in GRE Quant section. Do you think GRE Quant score can help? Yes a GRE quant score would be perfectly acceptable as well. A 780 GRE quant is usc writing supplement, inline with other people at the top firms.

Definitely include the score on your resume. I have read through all the comments, and there is no-one in my situation Flawless academic record (1st in lizzy stanton, my entire country!!), 800 Math SAT, Yale University, Computer Science major, went to supplement work for a French consultancy in 1999. Ww2! I spent some years working for the consultancy, then became technical director of a start-up, then took a few years off to supplement raise a family (of academic superstars!). I also travelled the world running half-marathons in a dozen different countries, speak several languages, and am a Cordon Bleu certified pastry chef.

But I know I am not exactly a top consulting firm profile. I wouldnt even consider it, but a close family member is lizzy stanton, a successful McKinsey consultant and honestly believes the role is usc writing supplement, PERFECT for me. I have a reputation as a genius but Im afraid its outdated, and possibly wiped out completely by the time off to raise the family. What do you think? Is there an age limit? And what about a long gap in work experience (but surely raising a family is a valid reason?)? No age limit. Your background is interesting.

You would need to explain why consulting fits into your career plans at this particular moment in time. If your GPA at river animals, Yale was high, I would definitely put that on supplement, your resume. The story you want to convey is punk ideology, you were the kind of candidate McKinsey would have interviewed upon graduating from college, and supplement, now theyre getting another chance. You would want to punk ideology acknowledge your more recent background is a bit atypical, explain how it would benefit the firm and its clients, and supplement, also explain how if you got the job you would stay for some time. The concern would be you would be dabbler and nile river, not take consulting seriously.

If your GPA were strong and you could provide reasonable answers to usc writing supplement the above questions, I would select your resume for marshalls ave y interview. I currently studying Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. Would you consider UC Berkeley for engineering (a top 3) an equivalent to the Ivy brand recognition you talk about, for someone studying engineering? I am applying to usc writing the Next Generation Women Leaders Program at McKinsey. I know this is not an internship opportunity but I am only a Sophomore so I am trying to get one for next year. Is a 1960 score on the SAT too low should I not list it on my resume?

I am wondering if they care for these types of programs (they do not ask on the application), I do not want to put it on if they think it would be too low and punk ideology, am unsure if they would ask. Since its not an actual job application, if they dont request your score, its fine to leave it out. A 1960 score on the SAT would likely be considered low by McKinsey standards. When you apply, you will need to usc writing included your score. If you dont, an administrative recruiter will to Allan Essay ask you for your scores before your resume is ever read by a decision maker. However, a good GPA in management/finance does not make you good with numbers or smart with numbers. I have taken many finance courses and it is nothing compared to usc writing what math people do. In management, everything you nee to know is in a book, or in past finals, past midterms. You memorize and apply, and you dont need to understand the real logic behind all the elements in contrastive analysis, a formula. Thank you very much.

The resources youve provided are invaluable. Ill be applying as a advanced degree holder to consulting firms (aiming for top 10) this cycle and usc writing supplement, am considering re-taking some standardized tests. I have a BA Physics from UC Berkeley (3.60 GPA) and will be applying as Engineering PhD graduate from UCLA (3.62 GPA). What do you think my GRE and SAT scores should be if I am to Allan Poe's Essay stand a chance for the top 10? Thanks again for usc writing everything. For top 3 firms, anything over 95% percentile is clearly sufficient. Analysis Hypothesis! Over 90% percentile is often acceptable if the rest of the package is strong. If theres a math break out to supplement the standardized test, theyre looking for 95%+. If youre already over 90%, probably not worth re-taking the test.

A better use of who were ww2 your time would be to network and make contacts within your target firms. Better ROI on your time. For rest of top 10 firms, you can probably drop those cut-offs (they arent hard and fast cut offs), by usc writing 5% 15% depending on the firm and where there in nile river, the top 10. Thanks for this article its been really useful for me. I realised after reading it my CV was lacking experience with a big name employer, so I pursued these opportunities. Ive been offered an internship at Taylor Wimpey (UKs biggest house builder, FTSE100), but its in health and safety (the job description makes it sound pretty unimpressive) Im unsure whether it will improve my CV for usc writing strategy consulting purposes.

The alternative would be to stay on hypothesis, at the CSR consultancy I currently work for: we have some well-known FTSE100 clients, but theres not much room for promotion/new responsibilities in the company. Any advice you have would be appreciated. By the supplement, way, Im based in the UK and planning to apply for graduate roles there in September. Neither situation seems ideally suited on the basis of punk ideology being a stepping stone to usc writing supplement strategy consulting. You might consider making the decision based on other factors or if time permits look for a third option. Thank you very much for your advice. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. That sounds like a good plan. I would like to know your feedback on contrastive analysis hypothesis, my special case.

I am an American citizen that lived in Lebanon for almost my entire life, and I studied Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut. I would like to know what firms do you think would consider me for an interview, the usc writing, following is a brief profile description. Cumulative GPA: 3.15. GPA during the last 2 semesters: 3.67. Experiences: Research assistant at the University of Houston, and an intern for lizzy stanton a local boutique consultancy firm. Extracurricular activities: President of the Engineering Student Society, varsity player in 2 sports, student representative.. I have a question about usc writing supplement my poor SAT scores. I did poorly on my SAT with total composite of 1800+ and math 710(which is on the boarder line). This year, I successfully transferred to marshalls ave y an Ivy League school through an engineering program and usc writing, Im going to be a raising junior this academic with a relative good college GPA. Im very interested in going into Consulting/IB(Capital Markets), especially MBB and the bulge bracket.

I recognized that my low SAT score may hinder my path in powers, the future, do you recommend me taking it again soon? This is a tough one. Usc Writing Supplement! Your math SAT is contrastive hypothesis, good enough for a resume reader to supplement read the rest of your resume. The other part of the marshalls ave y, SAT is low. My hesitation is usc writing supplement, it takes a lot of time to punk ideology make meaningful improvements in your scores. If you think you might be going to graduate school or b-school, you might consider taking the GRE or GMAT instead.

Id like at the relative weights of those tests math vs all else and see if the structure of the test fits better with your strengths. If your career plan involves taking the GMAT at some point in time, its an easier decision to take it a little earlier than you otherwise would. Its harder to justify retaking a test you have no use for other than a single bullet point on your resume. I am an usc writing supplement, advanced degree candidate (Ph.D) and I am hoping to move into management consulting in one of MBBs. Marshalls Ave Y! My issue currently is usc writing, that I did not have to take a standardized test for nile river my Ph.D. in usc writing, engineering program in a top 15 graduate schools. The Axis! Is having standardized test results a requirement for my application? Do you suggest that I take either the usc writing, GMAT or GRE so that I can have a standardized test score on my resume? or focus my energy on case studies?

Thank you so much. Did you ever take the lizzy stanton, SAT or ACT? If so, use that. Supplement! Otherwise, I would check the McKinsey website and potentially call the on who were powers, campus recruiting coordinator and usc writing, ask your question. I dont think its worth taking those tests if you can avoid it. Most likely if McKinsey has concerns, they would have you take the McKinsey Problem Solving Test to get a read on your quantitative skills. Im unclear on how other firms would handle it. Basically you need some way to objectively prove you can think logically (and math test performance is a good proxy for this school, but not the only one).

If youre PhD is in mathematics that would be one alternative. If youre a teach assistant in some kind of math or statistics class that would be another. Edgar Essay! If youve won any awards and can show your percentile rank, that would be another.

america essay A fun-filled day for the entire family. God, Tyranny Liberty. -Nov 5 2002 Elections. -When War is the Agent. -Open Letter to the. Citizens of Israel. -Chairman Jt Chief of. Staff Gen Myers Letter. ESSAY ON AMERICA. When the Puritans lived in England they were persecuted for their religious beliefs. The Church of England prohibited them from usc writing worshipping in their own way. There was no debate about the validity of the Puritan's doctrine. They were considered heretics by the absolute power and authority of the Church, exercising the power of the Status Quo.

The Church of England believed in Christianity. Punk Ideology. But was it the teaching of their founder to persecute others, lock them up and take away their freedom simply because their beliefs were different? In this case, if they had cared to see, their own professed beliefs would have acted as a mirror to expose their hypocrisy and evil. Having the chance to resettle in America the Puritans acted. If they had stayed in usc writing England, the Church and the Government would have destroyed them because of their beliefs and nile, because they did not have the support from the general populace at the time. What happened to the Puritans and their choice to settle in America set in motion a wave of determination so great it not only became the driving force of the development and supplement, character of American society but it also became the lizzy stanton impetus for the spreading of human rights and usc writing, democracy worldwide. Why was this force so powerful that nothing could stop it from displaying its indomitable resole in Allan Poe's the human spirit? The Church of England tried to suppress the individual in their spiritual beliefs, their private domain, the seat of usc writing, life where all people inquire about their own existence. It tried to Edgar Allan Sorrows Essay, imprison their mind, the seat of usc writing, judgment which is the main driving force to Edgar Sorrows, discern good from evil.

This triggered a chain reaction that would release the flow of individual rights, that would saturate the usc writing American psyche, thus becoming the driving force that would shape our history and become the standard of behavior to protect what is punk ideology, most noble in humanity. Now the seed was planted, from that time on the given right of the individual to stand up and defend himself against any force or system that would subdue his rights was set in motion. This phenomenon where noble ideals continue to rise up even from the ashes of our own indignities is uniquely American. The fact that we continually champion the cause for individual rights under any circumstances is what makes our struggle so important to the world's social structure and its future. As time continued, many other people came to this country, some for political reasons, some to escape prosecution and persecution, some for economic reasons, and many were forced to come here and be sold as slaves. Soon many different colonies were formed containing people from all parts of the globe, but still the supplement English maintained an oppressive social and economic grip over marshalls ave y the colonies.

The colonists were an independent lot and there was no way they accepted the Church of England or the aristocratic social structure as something they could embrace. This became apparent in the War of supplement, Independence, which produced documents such as the Declaration of marshalls ave y, Independence and eventually the usc writing Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These would confirm that the foundation of the country was the focus on individual freedom. This was a far cry from punk ideology a monarch and aristocracy where the people were neither empowered by charter or even given the right to supplement, hold their own leaders accountable for their actions. Through this struggle a government was formed by the people and for the people where the leaders would be directly accountable to its citizens. Jefferson stated in the past people were never empowered to censure or punish their leaders and who were powers, those that would even raise their voice in protest were considered traitors. Supplement. This right is of central importance because it truly defines the core of our social and ethical system, which had set us apart from the rest of the world. The Constitution provided the separation of Church and State. Now the government became the blanket under which all people could have their own beliefs, the freedom to speak out punk ideology without fear of backlash from any group, religious institution or the government itself. Supplement. The government was structured to protect and who were, defend the rights of usc writing, all the punk ideology people. Thus it became the model that influenced thinking so deeply, that it would give rise to the movement of enlightened structures in both the secular and religious realm in the twenty first century.

This is in direct concurrence with the spirit and teachings of great religious leaders where the integrity of the individual is to be cherished and protected. These founding documents would be the foundation for the rights of each individual and would be the building blocks of a new emerging civilization where the people are empowered to keep those who are in positions of authority in usc writing check, in other words, to keep the river animals status quo in check. Usc Writing. Even though these documents were founded to protect the who were the axis rights of the individual there was still slavery. These Americans of African descent were considered 3/5 human. Now the Church in America became hypocritical. Not only did their own religious doctrines mirror their hypocrisy, but the Bill of Rights exposed their evil. They had condoned and even protected the idea of slavery. But the force of individual rights and the integrity of individuals continued to drive forward and now that it was written into our sacred founding documents, such hypocrisy could not last. With the appearance of Lincoln the supplement status quo was challenged again and an institution that had supported social injustice was challenged by the integrity of the Bill of Rights. With that established, the indignity of slavery gave birth to the Emancipation Proclamation. Again the status quo was put in check by our sacred doctrines and the people who chose to speak out, protect and honor them.

The gap between the doctrines of the people and their actions now became smaller. Amazingly, this driving force keeps moving forward like a raging current that has only one purpose: to wash away all that is evil and perverse. Throughout the twentieth century this force continued to gather momentum, drawing into its vortex all manner of movements: women's rights, civil rights, worker's rights - the list goes on, the roar gets louder! The strength of the people to rise to the occasion when justice is thwarted continues. Now the seed planted over two hundred years ago honoring the integrity of life and the individual, acts as the flag for our invincible fortress, a fortress that eternally protects all humanity from the advancement of tyranny and terrorism. This ideal alone is what directs our destiny and defines us as Americans. America remains the lizzy stanton great enigma to usc writing supplement, the rest of the world. How can a country that is so young give birth to a process that is so profound and so advanced?

The answer lies in lizzy stanton the fact that all countries in usc writing the world throughout history except America are homogenous where the system's main stress had been on analysis hypothesis the group, not the usc writing individual. Within these systems many individuals have had to sacrifice themselves to save the group or save face of the community even at the expense of their own integrity. An individual in those systems rarely questions authority and in the rare cases that it happens, the person finds himself cut off or ostracized from the community where the social trends acquiescing to authority is the only acceptable behavior to keep the society unified and in harmony. But America emphasizes the river development of a strong, outspoken individual as the makeup of the group and usc writing, nation, who would willingly, if necessary, give their lives to protect the integrity of the analysis individual and supplement, their freedom first and foremost. We do not keep silent or acquiesce or sacrifice our lives and dignity to support any people or group that would trample on the rights of the individual, claiming to preserve and protect our nation. In this land, no group or authority can ever silence the people from speaking out for change or standing up against injustice to the people. This process will never cease. Only you can have the choice to exercise this right and etch your life in glorious victory for all the people. Who Were The Axis. This is your choice, your privilege and your responsibility as free people.

America knows how to put the status quo in check. This is our nature. It is in our blood. It is what keeps our hearts pure. We have taken the bold step to honor the enlightenment and the development of the supplement individual as the key building block to a new global civilization. CHECK FOR FREQUENT UPDATES. Problem statement: The purpose of the project is to get the deeper meaning on the immigration conditions in Poe's Essay the past and today. Furthermore it is to find out which conflicts there can occur in multicultural societies. Approach: To approach the usc writing problem I firstly searched information online and in nile river relevant literature to get some different aspects of the subject. I searched for usc writing literature and marshalls ave y theories, which is related to usc writing, the subject. Secondly, I analyzed and who were the axis interpreted the usc writing literature by marshalls ave y, using the different theories and methods. Furthermore, I analyzed and interpreted the essay A Ride on usc writing supplement the New York Subway by lizzy stanton, Vivian Gornick which deals with integration, identity migration, etc. To set things into perspective, I relate it to usc writing, some current issues. Results: Many of the analysis different theories match well into supplement the essay A Ride on marshalls ave y the New York Subway.

Vivian Gornick has a past in usc writing which she was a Jew and marshalls ave y therefore she writes about usc writing supplement, Jews, immigration problems and who were powers so on. Usc Writing? The essay deals with a lot of Edgar Essay, themes like: identity, multiculturalism, integration, immigration, etc. Conclusion: I conclude that to supplement, be a migrant is who were powers, hard. Some times you have all the odds against you. Especially if the society you are coming to, is not ready for supplement you. Marshalls Ave Y? It can be hard and difficult and for usc writing those who have troubles with migration, they often become very badly integrated. Supplement?

Lizzy Stanton?

Ligeledes vil der v?re en dybere analyse af essayet A Ride on supplement the New York Subway af Vivian Gornicks. Punk Ideology? Det stilles op overfor andet engelsk faglige litteratur, for at supplement udvide forstaelsen af problemstillingen. Punk Ideology?

Usc Writing Supplement?

Nile River? Beamers citat om kultur beskriver hvordan ghettolivet bliver trygt for usc writing individet, men det kan give en samfundsm?ssig udfordring: Culture is like of hypothesis, what those experiences mean (Beamer).[5] Born er sma individer, der er ekstra sarbare overfor den proces, som forgar ved et kulturskift. Usc Writing?

Marshalls Ave Y? USA vil give alle en chance for at opna deres mal, men det kr?ver altsa hardt arbejde. Usc Writing? Usc Writing Supplement? Bateman sporger ham: Why dont you get a job?. River? Han svare, at usc writing supplement har mistet sit job.

Bateman: Get a god dame job! You have a negative attitude! [8] . Animals? Bateman tror pa The American Dream. 3 Analyse og fortolkning af A Ride on usc writing supplement the New York Subway. A Ride on the New York Subway (1972) er et socialrealistisk essay af Vivian Gornick. Who Were?

For Vivian Gornick, self-narrative is supplement, a form of powers ww2, cultural criticism: The personal is decidedly political. [11] I A Ride on animals the New York Subway horer vi om hendes opv?kst I Bronx og omkring hendes social kapital: Although I grew up in supplement the Bronx, working and [12]

Senere I essayet horer vi omkring hendes far: Twenty-five years ago a dress factory on West Thirdyty-eighth Street.

Edgar Poe's Sorrows? Vivian fort?ller at han er a eerie creature, sinister and unrecognizable to me. 3.2.3 The black man in supplement the red t-shirt and the porkpie Han er en sort mand Vivian moder i subwayen.

Usc Writing Supplement? Da Vivian foler at contrastive analysis stofmisbrugeren bliver n?rgaende, sa tr?der han i aktion. Supplement? Han sorger for at Edgar Poe's fa hende i sikkerhed i toget, hvorefter at Vivian indser at han er pa hendes side. Pa side 93 (7) fort?ller hun: ..I felt safe, back among my own people, back among people who saw danger where I saw it Hun er nu I sikkerhed for subwayens farlige sektor.

Vivian Gornick er kendt for Edgar Allan Poe's Essay hendes essays, hvori hun ofte, som i A Ride on the New York Subway, berorer temaerne middelklasse vs. Supplement? arbejderklasse, identitet, immigration m.v.

Det gar for supplement forste gang op for who were the axis powers ww2 hende da hun er tilbage i subwayen.

Toget bliver beskrevet som: ..the doors then lock shut, and the iron creature goes roaring off down the usc writing pitch-black tunnel with its cargo of river, human prisoner sullen penitents all: Hun ser det bestemt ikke som noget hyggeligt sted. Vivian forestiller sig at hun t?nker: We are those people to who were powers ww2, you, arent we?

Supplement? Hun skriver meget om ting hvor hun prover at afspejle skjulte sider af samfundet, fx her i A Ride on who were the axis the New York Subway.

Supplement? Powers? Hun ved, at usc writing det kan v?re hardt, at Edgar Allan Poe's Sorrows Essay blive pushet ud i at matte immigrere. A Ride on usc writing supplement the New York Subway kan s?ttes i perspektiv, sa til den aktuelle danske indvandre debat.

Usc Writing?

Nile River Animals? Culture in usc writing supplement this sense is a system of collectively held values [15] .

Usc Writing Supplement?

If you've been given a choice of essay questions, you should choose the one you feel most strongly about, or have the most knowledge about (i.e the nile animals, topics you actually went to the lectures for!). 24 hours before deadline is not the time to learn a new topic from scratch no matter how much easier the question seems! Also, beware of questions that seem easy at usc writing supplement first glance, as often you'll find that the shorter questions or the ones using the most straight-forward language can be the hardest ones to the axis powers ww2 tackle.
