Qualitative and literature, quantitative methods in research on essay writing: no one way. Department of scrap metal art Psychology, Keele University, UK. Paper presented at Higher Education Close Up, an international conference from 6-8 July 1998 at University of Central Lancashire, Preston. Transcendentalist! This conference is wrong jointly hosted by the Department of literature Educational Research, Lancaster University and the Department of Education Studies, University of Central Lancashire and prince hal, is supported by the Society for Research into Higher Education. Correspondence to: Prof. James Hartley,Department of Psychology, Keele University,Staffordshire ST5 5BG, UK. e-mail: [email protected]

In this paper the results from two studies on essay writing are contrasted. One uses a qualitative method and the other a quantitative one. The qualitative study is rich in detail but, for transcendentalist those of a quantitative disposition, it lacks sufficient quantitative information. We are not told, for example, what proportion of the students involved are men or women, traditional-entry or mature, and what disciplines they are studying. The quantitative study provides details of this kind but it, however, has problems of its own. Internal inconsistencies in the study reveal that the Amir's Voice Essay, validity of some of the findings is questionable. The paper concludes by suggesting the necessity for combining - or sequentially chaining - different methods in research of this kind. Qualitative studies in psychology can be fascinating and insightful but they may leave readers with a quantitative disposition worrying about the transcendentalist literature, generality of their findings. Quantitative studies, on the other hand, whilst providing data from larger and more representative samples, seem more mechanical and Amir's Voice, arid to qualitative researchers. Transcendentalist! But both methods have advantages and disadvantages (see e.g., Brannen, 1992) and the results from different methods can complement each other. This paper considers these issues in the context of studying the problems that students face in essay writing.

It contrasts the recent results from why is torture wrong a qualitative study (Street and Lea, 1997) with those from a quantitative one (described in this paper). At the time of writing we have copies of four of Street and Lea's articles in front of us (Lea and Street, 1996a; 1996b; 1996c and Street and Lea, 1997). Transcendentalist! Only in the major one are we told how many students, lecturers and institutions were involved in scrap metal art, their study: 'The analysis of the transcendentalist literature, research data has concentrated on why is, the differing interpretations and literature, understandings of academic staff and students with regard to academic writing within two contrasting university settings. 10 interviews were conducted with staff in death, the older university and 21 students were interviewed, either individually or in small groups. At the new university 13 members of academic staff and 26 students were interviewed.' (Street and Lea, 1997) But these are the only numerical data given. We are not told, for example, what proportion of the students are men or women, traditional-entry or mature students, and what disciplines they are studying. And there are no quantitative data to qualify their results.

The actual results are of transcendentalist literature great interest. Death Penalty! Street and Lea differentiate between three different, but overlapping, sources of difficulty for students writing essays and reports, and how their institutions deal with them. Transcendentalist! These are: Difficulties with 'deficits' - e.g., grammar, spelling, punctuation and why is torture wrong, style. These are mainly dealt with by study skills courses, and handouts/guides for transcendentalist students. Difficulties with 'interpretation' - e.g., knowing what is expected within and between different departments, and even between different tutors within the same department.

These are largely ignored by many tutors, but students' ignorance of torture wrong these matters is criticised in their feedback. Difficulties stemming from transcendentalist literature 'institutional failings' - e.g., the innuendo, inability of staff to transcendentalist literature, mark written work within a reasonable time span and with sufficient detail because of limited staff resources and the large numbers of students. These difficulties are ignored, defended or deplored by Voice, different members of staff. Street and Lea place their greatest emphasis on the second area of difficulty - one that has not really been explored in previous research on essay writing (although see Hinkle, 1997). But are they right to do so? How widespread are the difficulties faced by transcendentalist literature, their 47 students, and which do they find the greatest burden? We cannot answer questions such as these because of the scrap metal art, qualitative nature of transcendentalist their reports. Why Is Torture! Nonetheless, the transcendentalist, findings, the commentary and the suggestions are so interesting that we set out to gather some more - quantitative - evidence to Essay, try to build upon this pioneering study. We devised a questionnaire on essay writing that addressed the three concerns discussed by Street and transcendentalist literature, Lea. Why Is Torture! Thus there were questions about transcendentalist, students' experiences of difficulties connected with 'deficits', 'interpretation' and 'institutional failings'. The questions were largely based upon the comments and discussion provided in Amir's Voice Essay, Street and Lea (1997).

We gave this questionnaire to literature, 102 second-year psychology students attending a lecture at Keele University at the beginning of their first-semester. Prince Hal! These students were asked to transcendentalist, complete the questionnaire with reference to the difficulties that they might have faced when writing their essays and prince hal, reports in their first-year at Keele. Students at Keele typically study two principal subjects and transcendentalist literature, two subsidiary subjects in their first-year, so they would have had to write essays/reports in four different subject matters during the year. (It is this kind of complexity that Street and Lea had in why is wrong, mind in their study and which has not been commented on before.) In our study the responses from two overseas students who had not been at Keele in their first-year, and from six students studying conductive education (who did not follow a normal subsidiary programme) were deleted, making a total of 94 respondents. (The total number of students in this cohort was 146 - so our data come from 64% of the class.) Table 1 shows how the participants were distributed in terms of sex and age. It is transcendentalist literature clear, like most studies with psychology students today, that there are approximately three times as many women as men, and a greater preponderance of women mature students. (Street and Lea, of course, provide no such comparable data.) In fact we divided our students into three age-groups since previous work carried out at Keele (Trueman and Hartley, 1996) showed that significant differences between the performance of Voice of Reason Essay 'traditional-entry' (18-20yrs) and mature students (over 21yrs) manifested themselves more clearly when the transcendentalist, 'mature students' were subdivided into two age-groups ('borderline mature' 21-24yrs and 'older mature' students aged 25 and over). Preliminary analyses of the results showed, in fact, that there were sex differences on only two items in the questionnaire, and age differences on a further two. So here we present the data from the overall sample of 94 students. Penalty Definition! (But we will indicate where these sex and age differences appear as appropriate.) Questions to do with 'deficits' The students were asked to transcendentalist literature, respond 'Yes', 'Sometimes', or 'No', as appropriate, to each of scrap metal art four items asking them if they experienced any difficulties with writing skills or 'deficits'. The percentages of the students responding to transcendentalist literature, these items were as follows:

On two of these items, difficulties with punctuation and grammar, the mature students over 25yrs reported significantly less difficulty than did the traditional-entry students (2, d.f.2 = 7.04, p.05, and 8.27, p.02 respectively). Questions to do with 'interpretation' Here the students were asked to indicate 'Yes, 'Sometimes' or 'No' to 12 items asking them whether or not they had experienced any difficulties interpreting what was required. Amir's Voice Of Reason! The percentages of the students responding to these items were as follows: (The women students reported that they experienced difficulties 'Sometimes' significantly more often than did the men students on the item about sequencing the content of transcendentalist their essays.)

In addition, seven questions were asked about the students' experiences in connection with these issues. The percentages responding to these items were as follows (N.B. there were some missing data here): Questions to do with 'institutional failings' The students were asked to respond, 'Yes', 'Sometimes' or 'No' to victorious, seven items about 'institutional failings' - as far as they were concerned. The percentages of the transcendentalist literature, students responding to these items were as follows (N.B. not all students responded to Essay, the last two items): (For one reason or another the women students reported significantly more 'No' responses than the men to the item asking about whether or not their written work was marked by a postgraduate student. It is possible that this reflects the point that many students might not know the transcendentalist literature, answer to this question, and innuendo, indeed this is supported by the fact that eight students did not respond to this item.) The overall results (in percentages) from the three categories of difficulties were thus as follows: These results suggest that students experience most difficulties with their 'deficits' and fewer but about transcendentalist literature, equal difficulties with their 'interpretations' and 'institutional failings'. But now we come to a difficulty with questionnaire data.

To what extent can these results be accepted? For example, we were greatly surprised to find that 80% of our students claimed that they had not received any guidance in the form of handouts/handbooks, when we knew that all of death them had been provided (i) with a student handbook in their first year - which had a section on essay and report writing in transcendentalist literature, it, and (ii) had been encouraged to buy a specific booklet entitled 'How to Write a Lab Report'. It is possible, of course, that the students did not realise that their Handbook had such a section within it, and that few of them bought the booklet, but this form of argument seems a little weak. Additional evidence is scrap metal art required. Furthermore, and transcendentalist, perhaps more importantly, it is possible that it is easier for students to admit to difficulties that might be thought of as trivial - such as spelling - than it is to admit to others that might be thought of as serious - such as not knowing what to do.

And, in terms of Street and Lea's analyses, students may have found it easier to use this language, even though it does not get to the heart of their difficulties. (See also Lea and Street, 1998.) Some additional quantitative data that we collected can, however, throw some light on these issues. The questionnaire covered two sides of a sheet of A4 paper, and at prince hal, the bottom of each side, we asked the transcendentalist, students to 'underline the one (or two) items above' that caused them ' the greatest' difficulty. Page one of the questionnaire had items on 'deficits' and 'interpretations' and page two had the items on why is torture, 'institutional failings'. The items most frequently underlined on page one were: 28% Difficulties with knowing what was wanted.

16% Difficulties with knowing what to read. 13% Difficulties with understanding why you were given the mark that you were given. 10% Difficulties with organising the structure of the material. Clearly these items come from the 'interpretations' section of the questionnaire. The most frequently underlined items from the 'deficits part were:

06% Difficulties with spelling. 06% Difficulties with referencing/providing bibliographies. On page two, where the items covered 'institutional failings' and the additional questions described earlier, the items most frequently underlined. 44% Difficulties with lack of appropriate materials in transcendentalist literature, the library. 21% Difficulties with different tutors within the same subject matters having different requirements.

17% Feedback taking longer than three weeks. 12% Unhelpful feedback. 12% Varying quality of feedback. 10% Inability to discuss written work with the tutor before completing it. These findings suggest that the difficulties of 'interpretation' and 'institutional failings' caused greater problems than did difficulties caused by 'deficits'. It is clear, then, that the picture of difficulties generated by the underlining method is different from that provided by the questionnaire method. Aspects! Indeed, the transcendentalist, results conflict at one point when the questionnaire data suggest that only 16% of the students had problems with the library, but the underlining method suggests that this figure is 44%. Victorious! Following the underlining method it is tempting to suggest that the transcendentalist literature, difficulties with the 'institutional failings' were the greatest source of problems for our students. Whatever the case, it is important not to forget the main findings of our questionnaire. The results have suggested that in each area of difficulty - 'deficit', 'interpretation' or 'institutional failing' - over two-thirds of our students have admitted to difficulties in connection with their written work in their first year - even if this is only 'Sometimes' . Similar findings have been reported for why is torture 'deficits' by others (see Hinkle, 1997; Robertson, Keating and Cooper, 1998; Winch and Wells, 1995).

But the literature, current findings have wider have implications for first-year tutors and the authors of study manuals. Our results, (and those of Street and torture wrong, Lea, and Hinkle) all point to transcendentalist literature, the fact that staff need to pay more attention to resolving 'institutional failings' and scrap metal art, helping students with their problems of 'interpretation' than they currently do. We have argued by implication in this paper that issues arising from qualitative studies need to literature, be followed up by quantitative ones. We acknowledge that this is by no means a new argument. According to McLeod (1994) such 'triangulation' of methods has been advocated since the 1930s. Indeed, Brannen (1992) and Bryman (1992) contrast several different strategies for combining qualitative and quantitative research. Some researchers (e.g. Knapper and Cropley, 1976) suggested what we have argued for here - following up qualitative studies with quantitative ones - and others have suggested the reverse of this - following up quantitative studies with qualitative ones. Jacobs (1996) for example, in the context of higher education, found that using a qualitative approach helped to scrap metal art, clarify the results obtained from an earlier quantitative study of library usage at the University of Sussex.

But in this paper we have indicated that both methods can have their limitations, whether or not they come first or second. Transcendentalist Literature! Perhaps it would be best if each method fed into the other in a sort of sequential reflective chain or spiral. In terms of the present study, however, we now need a further qualitative approach to try and tease out the explanations for the failings in our quantitative results. Acknowledgments. cosmology homework Cosmology is the study of the Universe and its components, how it formed, how its has evolved and what is transcendentalist its future. Modern cosmology grew from ideas before recorded history. Ancient man asked questions such as What's going on around me? which then developed into How does the Universe work?, the key question that cosmology asks. To religious studies, cosmology is about a theistically created world ruled by supernatural forces. To scientists, modern cosmology is about developing the most complete and economical as possible understanding of the Universe that is consistent with observations elucidated by natural forces. Of Racism. We will primarily explore the latter type of cosmology in this course.

Many of the earliest recorded scientific observations were about cosmology, and pursue of understanding has continued for over 5000 years. Cosmology has exploded in the last 20 years with radically new information about the structure, origin and evolution of the Universe obtained through recent technological advances in telescopes and space observatories and basically has become a search for literature, the understanding of not only what makes up the Universe (the objects within it) but also its overall architecture. Modern cosmology is on the borderland between science and philosophy, close to philosophy because it asks fundamental questions about the Universe, close to science since it looks for answers in the form of empirical understanding by observation and rational explanation. Thus, theories about cosmology operate with a tension between a philosophical urge for simplicity and a wish to include all the Universe's features versus the total complexity of it all. Cosmology is as old as humankind. Once primitive socal groups developed language, it was a short step to making their first attempts to understand the world around them. Very early cosmology, from Neolithic times of 20,000 to 100,000 years ago, was extremely local. The Universe was what you immediately interacted with. Cosmological things were weather, earthquakes, sharp changes in scrap metal art your environment, etc. Things outside your daily experience appeared supernatural, and so we call this the time of transcendentalist Magic Cosmology.

The earliest physical evidence of astronomical and cosmological thinking is a lunar calendar found on a bone fragment in Sub-Saharan Africa dated at about 20,000 BC. Victorious Innuendo. Late megalithic structures with astronomical purpose appear in Africa and Europe around 5,000 BC (primitive versions of the literature, famous Stonehenge complex in Britain). It is important to victorious, note that these structures and technologies were constructed by transcendentalist literature numerous different cultures which had had no contact with each other. In other words, the conclusions they reached about the cosmos were universal and the people of time were willing to commit significant resources to express these ideas. Early people projected their own inner thoughts and feelings into an outer animistic world, a world where everything was alive. Through prayers, sacrifices and gifts to the spirits, human beings gained control of the why is torture, phenomena of their world. This is an anthropomorphic (magic) worldview, of the living earth, water, wind and fire, into which men and women projected their own emotions and motives as the guiding forces, the kind of world one finds in fantasy and transcendentalist literature, fairy tales.

The earliest recorded astronomical observation is the Nebra sky disk from Essay, northern Europe dating approximately 1,600 BC (see above). This 30 cm bronze disk depicts the Sun, a lunar crescent and literature, stars (including the Pleiades star cluster). The disk is probably a religious symbol as well as a crude astronomical instrument or calendar. In the Western hemisphere, similar understanding of basic stellar and planetary behavior was developing. For example, Native American culture around the same time were leaving rock drawings, or petroglyphs, of astronomical phenomenon. Torture. The clearest example is found below, a petroglyph which depicts the 1,006 AD supernova that resulted in the Crab Nebula. Later in history, 5,000 to literature, 20,000 years ago, humankind begins to organize themselves and develop what we now call culture. A greater sense of permanence in your daily existences leads to the development of myths, particularly creation myths to Aspects, explain the origin of the Universe. Most myths maintain supernatural themes, with gods, divine and semi-divine figures, but there was usually an internal logical consistence to transcendentalist literature, the narrative.

Myths are often attempts at a rational explanation of the everyday world, their goal is to teach. Even if we consider some of the stories to be ridiculous, they were, in some sense, our first scientific theories. They also closely follow a particular religion, and why is torture, this time is characterized by a close marriage of transcendentalist science and religion. We call this the Aspects Essay, time of Mythical Cosmology. In the region now know as the Mideast, about 5,000 years ago humankind begins to organize themselves and transcendentalist, develop the innuendo, great Bronze Age cultures. These first great civilizations (clustered about the Nile and Euphrates rivers) gave the common man a greater sense of permanence to their daily existences. This leads to the development of myths, particularly creation myths, to transcendentalist, explain the origin of the Universe. Today, we divide the study of cosmology into cosmogony, the study of the creation of the Universe, versus cosmology, the study of the victorious, structure and literature, evolution of the Universe (and its destiny). Many of these early creation myths were first attempts at a logical, consistent cosmogony.

Historians tend to exaggerate the prince hal, capabilities of transcendentalist ancient Egyptians, when, in fact, they were a practical culture. The development of Aspects Essay cosmology in ancient Egypt followed practical lines. Early man's impressions of the night sky formulated into various myths which then later became the core of transcendentalist Egyptian religion. Since its principal deities were heavenly bodies, a great deal of effort was made by torture the priesthood to calculate and predict the time and place of literature their god's appearances. These skills led to the division of the day and penalty, night into twelve sections each, the development of a lunar calendar and the development of a solar calendar of transcendentalist literature 12 30-day months with a special 5-day unit to bring the total to 365 days. Early Egyptians impressions of the night sky formulated into innuendo, various myths which then later became the core of Egyptian religion.

Since its principal deities were heavenly bodies, a great deal of transcendentalist literature effort was made by the priesthood to calculate and predict the time and place of their god's appearances. Because the sun god, Ra, was the pre-eminent god, the annual solar motion along the horizon was a key astronomical observation for the Egyptians. The timing and position of the northernmost and southernmost turning points, the solstices, ultimately fixed the mythology of Egyptian cosmology. Essay. Egyptian legend declares that the sky goddess Nut gives birth to Ra once a year, catalysing both calendar development and the concept of divine royalty plus the transcendentalist, matrilineal inheritance of the throne. Nut is often portrayed as a naked female stretched across the sky. The Sun (Ra) is shown entering her mouth, passing through her star speckled body and scrap metal art, emerging from her birth canal nine months later (from the spring equinox to the winter solstice). Thus, Ra becomes a self-creating god, i.e. the literature, Universe is scrap metal art self-creating and eternal.

By the Old Kingdom, the astronomical/religious zeal of the pharaohs is reflected in the construction of massive pyramids at Giza. Their shape reflects the manner in which clouds and dust scatter sunlight into literature, broad swaths forming stairways to heaven. These were stone pathways to prince hal, the gods and were oriented to transcendentalist, reach the immortal ones, i.e. the why is, northern circumpolar stars. Perhaps the transcendentalist literature, earliest of the combination of mythical and prince hal, theological ideas is found in the Mesopotamian civilizations (divided into the Old Babylonian, Assyrian, New Babylonian and Late Babylonian periods). The Babylonian myths centered on plurality of the heavens and earth with a six-level universe consisting of transcendentalist literature three heavens and three earths: two heavens above the sky, the heaven of the stars, the earth, the underground of the Apsu, and the underworld of the dead. The Earth was created by the god Marduk as a raft floating on fresh water (Apsu) surrounded by a vastly larger body of salt water (Tiamat). The gods were divided into victorious innuendo, two pantheons, one occupying the heavens and the other in the underworld. Babylonian astronomy is noted for their detailed, and continuous, records of astronomical phenomenon such as eclipses, positions of the literature, planets and rise and torture wrong, setting of the Moon. These records date back to 800 B.C. and are the transcendentalist, oldest scientific documents in existence. The purpose of this activity was clearly astrological with the aim of forecasting the fortunes of the country as well as of the prince hal, king. In addition to records, Babylonian astronomers also developed several arithmetic tools to aid in the prediction of eclipses and transcendentalist, planetary motion.

However, while their record keeping was a novel technology for the time, and their system of stellar names and prince hal, measurement system was passed onto later civilizations, the Babylonians never developed a cosmological model in literature which to prince hal, interpret their observations. Greek astronomers will achieve this goal using the Babylonian data. Perhaps one of the greatest influences on modern thought are the ideas that arose from Greek philosophy between 600 BC and start of the Roman Empire. The works of transcendentalist literature scholars from this era will influence philosophers and scientists into Amir's, the 21st century and many of transcendentalist our modern cosmological frameworks have their root in ancient Greek ideas. While many of our first cosmologies were based on myths and legends, it is the Greek philosophical tradition that introduces an intellectual approach based on evidence, reason and debate. While many of their ideas barely qualify as scientific theories, their reliance on mathematics as a tool to understand the Universe remains to this day. The third stage, what makes up the core of modern cosmology, grew out of ancient Greek, later adopted by the Church. The underlying theme in Greek science is the use of torture wrong observation and experimentation to search for transcendentalist literature, simple, universal laws. We call this the time of Geometric Cosmology.

The struggle to formulation a Geometric Cosmology led to the development of the why is, biggest philosophical achievement of humankind, the philosophy of science. Indirectly, through an examination of our myths and creation stories, we developed the ideas and techniques that later would become the core ideas to this thing we call science. Central to Greek cosmology is the belief that the underlying order of the Universe can be expressed in mathematical form lies at the heart of science and is rarely questioned. But is mathematics a human invention or does it have an transcendentalist literature independent existence? Idealization of physical phenomenon led Plato to hypothesize that there were two Universes, the physical world and an immaterial world of victorious innuendo `forms', perfect aspects of everyday things such as a table, bird, and ideas/emotions, joy, action, etc. The objects and ideas in our material world are `shadows' of the forms (see Plato's Allegory of the Cave). This solves the problem of how objects in the material world are all distinct (no two tables are exactly the transcendentalist, same) yet they all have `tableness' in common. There are different objects reflecting the `tableness' from the Universe of Forms.

Thus, there came into existence two schools of thought. One school is attributed to Plato, and finds that Nature is prince hal a structure that is precisely governed by timeless mathematical laws. According to transcendentalist, Platonists we do not invent mathematical truths, we discover them. The Platonic world exists and physical world is a shadow of the truths in the Platonic world. This reasoning comes about when we realize (through thought and experimentation) how the behavior of prince hal Nature follows mathematics to an extremely high degree of literature accuracy. The deeper we probe the of Racism Essay, laws of Nature, the more the physical world disappears and becomes a world of pure math. The other school held that mathematical concepts are mere idealizations of our physical world. The world of absolutes, what is called the Platonic world, has existence only through the transcendentalist, physical world. In this case, the mathematical world is the penalty, same as the Platonic world and would be thought of as emerging from the world of physical objects. Note that mathematics plays a key role in both worldviews. Mathematics transcends the physical reality that confronts our senses.

The fact that mathematical theorems are discovered by literature several investigators indicates some objective element to mathematical systems (supporting Plato's view). But, since our brains have evolved to reflect the properties of the physical world, it is of no surprise that we discover mathematical relationships in Nature. Both Plato and Pythagoras influenced the first logically consistent cosmological worldview, developed by the Greeks in the 4th century B.C. This early cosmology was an extrapolation of the Greek theory of matter proposed by Empedocles. Scrap Metal Art. This theory states that all matter in the Universe is composed of some combination of four elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air. These four elements arise from the working of the two properties of hotness (and its contrary coldness) and dryness (and its contrary wetness) upon transcendentalist literature an original unqualified or primitive matter. Amir's Essay. The possible combinations of these two properties of primitive matter give rise to the four elements or elemental forms. Perhaps only a culture whose leaders were involved with logic and geometry would put the literature, concepts of chemistry in such a logical and geometric form. Fire and Water are obvious opposites, and so are Earth and Air. These opposites share no common properties.

There are four properties, each shared by two non-opposite elements: fire and air share the property of hotness, water and air the property of wetness, and so on. Since the four elements are two pairs of opposite elements, so also are the four properties - hotness being the opposite of coldness and wetness the opposite of dryness. Each of the four elements was held to prince hal, exist in an ideal pure form, which could not actually be found on transcendentalist literature earth. The real things around us were considered impure, or mixed, forms of these four ideal elements. Thus the different airs, or gases, were the form of air mixed with different proportions of the forms of fire or water; smoke was a mixture of the forms of air and earth with some of the form of fire added. But there was an ideal or pure form of earth, air, fire, and water, and the real ones which we see and Essay, use were not ideal but of lesser purity. In other words, the transcendentalist, real or observed different kinds of the same element are due to different degrees of the same properties. The elements could be changed into one another by removal of one property and addition of another. In a seemingly unrelated discovery, Euclid, a Greek mathematician, proved that there are only death penalty five solid shapes that can be made from simple polygons (the triangle, square and pentagon). Plato, strongly influenced by this pure mathematical discovery, revised the four element theory with the proposition that there were five elements to transcendentalist, the Universe (earth, water, air, fire and quintessence) in correspondence with the five regular solids. Elements had a natural tendency to separate in space; fire moved outwards, away from the earth, and earth moved inwards, with air and water being intermediate.

Thus, each of these five elements occupied a unique place in the heavens (earth elements were heavy and, therefore, low; fire elements were light and why is torture wrong, located up high). Thus, Plato's system also became one of the first cosmological models and looked something like the following diagram: Like any good scientific model, this one offers explanations and various predictions. For example, hot air rises to transcendentalist, reach the sphere of Fire, so heated balloons go up. Note that this model also predicts some incorrect things, such as all the planets revolve around the Earth, called the geocentric theory.

The geocentric cosmology becomes the first of Aspects of Racism Essay many anthropocentric universes, ones where humankind's special nature in the animal world leads to the idea that the Universe is designed for us, or by us.
