Thomas Stonewall Jackson (18241863) When I lived in England, I read about the Reformers and Puritans, whose godly lives were a great encouragement to symbolism in wuthering me. Book The Man Essay. I was raised in the southern United States and there have been many men there too, both theologians and laymen, who are godly examples. Thomas Jonathan Jackson was one such man whom I have greatly admired. While known for his genius, bravery and tenacity in battle, he was also a loving husband, devoted father and faithful churchman. Thomas was born one bitterly cold night, on symbolism, 21 January 1824, to Jonathan and Julia Jackson in Clarksburg, Virginia. Even early on, Thomas life was fraught with sorrow and difficulty due to the outbreak of typhoid in his family in 1826.

His elder sister and father both died of the disease, and Thomas, being exposed to it, struggled with his health throughout the remainder of his life. His mother gave birth to her fourth child the day after her husband died. Art Therapy History. She died when Thomas was seven and that grief was very hard to bear, even into symbolism, adulthood. She had been a godly example and his solace as a youngster. After her death, Thomas was placed in system the care of his fathers uncle at Jacksons Mill. For the remainder of his youth, Jackson grew up at symbolism heights, Jacksons Mill and learned many useful skills as he worked the land with his family. While his uncle was not the best role model, Thomas did learn self-discipline and on The Catherine, a devotion to duty, which marked him through the rest of his life. From 1842 to in wuthering 1846, Jackson attended West Point, the military academy of the United States, and graduated 17th in Book Bruce Ware´s Christ his class of 59 graduates. His education was difficult, but his steadfast character and discipline won him a good standing. He was made brevet second lieutenant in the US Artillery and sent, in 1846, to war in Mexico. While there, he was promoted three times and served with distinction in several battles, including the siege of in wuthering Chapultepec.

During that battle, he was in charge of a battery assaulting the of the Essay castle and taking heavy fire. The enemys withering fire killed all the horses in his battery and disabled one of his guns. While his gunners fled for cover, Jackson stood amidst the barrage and tried to rally his men to the guns. At one interval, a cannonball rolled between his legs, but he remained unmoved and in wuthering, continued to encourage his men. A couple of the gunners helped him and returned fire.

Jackson received reinforcements shortly after and continued to hold the ground, which may have proved a turning point in the battle. After the india's close of the Mexican-American War, Jackson didnt remain long in the army. He resigned in 1851 to become a professor at Virginia military college (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia. While he was a brilliant tactician, his skill at teaching was limited. He memorised his lessons and regurgitated them word for word, without enhancement. Heights. He became known for his awkward behaviour and rigidity, earning him the nicknames Old Jack and Old Hickory. Essay On The Of Lady In Pride And Prejudice. However, he did gain his students respect for his devotion to duty, compassion and sincerity. In 1853, he married Elinor Junkin but their happy marriage was short-lived, since she died in childbirth a year later. Burdened with grief at the passing of his wife and stillborn son, Jackson took a sabbatical and toured much of Europe, including Great Britain and Ireland.

After his journey, he resumed teaching at VMI as a renewed man, and in 1857 married Mary Anna Morrison, with whom he was to have a wonderful and dear relationship. But, just as married life for the Jacksons began, the in wuthering heights United States was approaching the outbreak of civil war. Tensions between the North and South were coming to a head over states rights and slavery. Things quickly got out of hand with the revolt of John Brown. Financed by wealthy men from the india's North, Brown ravaged the territory of Kansas in an attempt to free slaves.

He and his men also took over the arsenal Harpers Ferry in 1859, in heights their attempt to Pierce: The 14th of the United States initiate a slave revolt in the South. Brown and in wuthering heights, his followers were captured and art therapy history, Jackson was ordered to command a contingent of cadets to keep order at the hanging of John Brown (where he prayed for Browns salvation). Jackson was concerned for his native state, but more concerned on how disunion in America would hinder the work of the gospel. Heights. He would rather the Essay Catherine South stay in the union, but also he would not let the heights North take over the South by force. South Carolina was the first state to Franklin Pierce: States Essay secede (20 December 1860) and, by February 1861, six other states had joined her. Symbolism In Wuthering. On 17 April, Virginia voted for secession and The Role of Social Essay, Jackson, with solemnity, volunteered his sword for the defence of his native state. He was given command of a brigade, made up of his cadets and men of the northern valley of Virginia. He was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General within the symbolism in wuthering heights first months of the war.

Jacksons reputation and fame grew during one momentous battle. Sofc Fuel Cell. It was Sunday 21 July 1861. Jackson and his brigade were sent to symbolism engage Union troops at Manassas Junction, about 30 miles south of Washington DC. The day was going against the Confederates and Jackson was ordered to Bruce provide reinforcements to the Confederates left. As his men waited under the cover of trees, just below the reverse crest of Henry House Hill, wave upon symbolism in wuthering heights wave of retreating Confederates met them and told them that all was lost. Jackson, unwavering, carefully ordered his men to sofc fuel cell position themselves on the edge of the woods overlooking the battlefield. Heights. As they waited in this position for three hours, amidst the thunderous onslaught of political cannon fire, his men watched as Jackson calmly rode up and down the lines encouraging them with no sign of panic or fear. The Union forces soon began to advance up the hill and General Barnard Bee, whom Jackson had been sent to reinforce, rode up and said, General, they are beating us back!

Jackson replied with sternness and resolve, Sir, we will give them the bayonet. Bee then rode back to his men and said, Look, men, there is Jackson standing like a stone wall! Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer! Rally behind the Virginians! After holding his ground, Jackson ordered his men to give one volley and symbolism in wuthering heights, then charge with bayonet yelling like Furies. This charge took the field and routed the Union army. So the Confederates won the sofc fuel cell battle and Jackson received his famous nickname, Stonewall. Thomas Jackson continued to in wuthering heights lead his armies in victory from sofc fuel cell, 18611863.

His devotion to duty and his skill as a leader and tactician won him several promotions. He was loved by his soldiers and feared by his enemies. Then one fateful night, on 2 May 1863, as Jackson was reconnoitring at the Battle of Chancellorsville with members of his staff, he was fired upon by Confederate troops from North Carolina, mistaking them for Union troops. He was struck with three bullets and had to have his left arm amputated. Though he quickly recovered from the symbolism operation, pneumonia set in and he was sent to a field hospital at Guiney Station. His wife joined him and Book Essay, read to symbolism him his favourite portions of Scripture, especially Romans 8:28: And we know that, for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. With his health failing rapidly, the doctors told his wife that he would soon depart this world. Then on Sunday 10 May 1863, with his wife and close staff members around him, Jackson uttered his final words, Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees, and was gathered to his Saviour. The entire South mourned his death and he was buried in stately honour in Lexington, next to his first wife and stillborn son. Stonewall Jackson was a man of deep character and great faith in his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He left a great legacy.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Virginia, and served as a deacon. He also taught a catechism class for slaves and was greatly interested in their well-being, even while he was at war. He was admired for his bravery on on The of Lady and Prejudice, the battlefield and his leadership skills, pointing to his faith in in wuthering heights Gods providence. Book Bruce The Man Christ Jesus. Jackson also encouraged and symbolism heights, stimulated a Christian revival in The 14th President United the Confederate army. He is definitely a man worth emulating, and his courage and symbolism heights, faith have often encouraged me. As one of his former cadets, Thomas M. History. Boyd, wrote: His fame is as lasting as the solid stones of his native hills and heights, yet there is for him a purer, nobler record his quiet Christian walk in life, his right words, his faithful, manly bearing, his victory over self, his known devotion to the word of truth. He was indeed a soldier of the cross (J.

Steven Wilkins, All things for good , p.1). This article was first published on Evangelical Times in art therapy history July 2015 and shared with their permission. All rights reserved. Subscribe to ETs newsletter here. Throughout Western Literature, several writings appear that belong to the genre called epic. By definition, an epic is a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of symbolism in wuthering heroic or legendary figures or the past history of a nation (OED). As a proud speaker and writer of the English language, I am pleased to know that such a heroic poem exists in sofc fuel cell my own languages history which joins the ranks of other epics like The Iliad and The Odyssey . Beowulf , anonymously written between the 8 th and 11 th centuries A.D., is such an epic but it stands out in its genre for a certain reason. Symbolism In Wuthering Heights. Most of the Franklin The 14th President other epics, whether Greek, Latin, or Mesopotamian, include their own mythologies and deities and are filled with ancient pagan motifs and symbolism in wuthering heights, language.

Not so Beowulf . The original text of Beowulf , which is in Anglo Saxon or Old English, stands alone as a text which fuses Anglo Saxon/ Scandinavian pagan ideas and culture with that of Christian heroism. As F.A. Blackburn writes in his article, The Christian Colouring in art therapy history the Beowulf , that the symbolism heights epic is labeled as essentially a heathen poem by many who state that its materials are drawn from tales composed before the conversion of the Angles and Saxons to Christianity (205). If this is verily so, how did it have such a vivid Christian coloring as Blackburn and of Lady de Bourgh In Pride and Prejudice, many others have stated? Charles Donahue and Blackburn give varying hypotheses. Symbolism. Blackburn gives three solutions: 1. The poem was composed by a Christian, who had heard the stories and used them as the material for his work. 2. The poem was composed by a Christian, who used old lays as his material. (This differs from the The 14th President first supposition in assuming that the tales had already been versified and were in poetical form before they were used by the author.) 3. The poem was composed by heights a heathen, either from old stories or from old lays.

At a later date it was revised by a Christian poet, to whom we owe the Christian allusions found in sofc fuel cell it. (This hypothesis differs from the others in assuming the existence of a complete poem without the Christian coloring.) (205). Donahue, via Tolkien and Klaebers research, espouses that the symbolism in wuthering work was not that of a Christian editor, as others were inclined to of Social think. Symbolism. Rather, the Christian material cannot, therefore, be regarded as the work of an editor. It is political, integral to the poem (Donahue 56). Yet how are these Christian elements integral to the poem? While such a study could be done, it is much too broad. Therefore, the purpose of this study shall be to examine the text for in wuthering heights, how Christian heroism is portrayed in Beowulf and how that is integral to the poem, not merely an editors corruption (Donahue 55). Christian heroism is a common enough theme in Western Literature. Works such as Morte Darthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , and The Faerie Queen exemplify how a hero is supposed to act. Each hero fights off some visage of Character of Lady Catherine evil whether monster or tyrant and ostensibly saves someone from such danger. These stories, especially those further along in the medieval age, would include courtly love in their tales and the heros struggle with maintaining Christian chastity despite the femme fatales offers.

There are many other characteristics but these tales are heavily saturated with Christian heroic elements, almost to the point of becoming nauseating. Yet Beowulf , though imbibed with Christian heroic elements is quite different. Symbolism In Wuthering. It plays a different air that combines Christian elements, such as Bible references, Christian stories, and even some practical theology; with Anglo Saxon/ Scandinavian pagan culture, brutish feats of The 14th United Essay strength, as well as many other ideas. Within this story there are three central heroes, Beowulf, Hrothgar, and Wiglaf, who display Christian qualities not found in pagan culture. Symbolism In Wuthering. Each character is The 14th United Essay, a leader of their people and therefore need to symbolism in wuthering heights be treated as such. The Role Of Social Essay. But first, what characterizes a Christian hero or king?

Levin L. Shucking gives some light on the subject as he gives Augustinian ideas of what befits a Christian king or hero. Heights. The prince must be master of all his desires and passions, and sofc fuel cell, especially, not yield power over himself to the greatest and for him the symbolism in wuthering most dangerous sinpride (superbia), but remain modest and humble (39). Second, his rule is to be one marked by love, sympathy, and benevolence (Shucking 39). The ideal Christian king/hero also desires to serve not command (Shucking 39). Shucking goes on to say that a true Christian king/hero is indulgent and pardons easily (39). If he is forced to act harshly, he tries to art therapy history compensate by heights mercy and ample charity. His purpose is to bring and keep for himself and his people the true peace of God on earth (Shucking 39). He tries to The Role maintain harmony and be both a lord and father to his people (Shucking 39). Shucking quoted prominent church fathers like Sedulius Scotus who wrote that being a peaceful king was the highest virtue a king could possess (39). Even Charlemagne added the Latin name pacificus to his title to state his qualities as a peaceful king (Shucking 39). Gregory, whom Shucking states was revered by the Anglo-Saxons, states that the highest virtue of a Christian king is complete and humble devotion to Gods will (40). Shucking also hints that the Anglo Saxons knew this well since they wrote that the king was to be folces forfor and rihtwis hyrde ofer cristene heorde or the protector of the people and just shepherd over the Christian flock (40).

As Shucking demonstrates later in his article, Christian kings must display some sort of intellectual prowess or wisdom. A true Christian hero is illuminated by his speaking too. J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and in wuthering, one of the most influential Beowulf critics of all time, also discusses the Christianization of Beowulf , especially in its allusions to on The Character of Lady Catherine de Bourgh In Pride the Old Testament and symbolism, the treatment of monsters (11). The shepherd patriarchs and kings of art therapy Israel are emulated in the text as being servants of the symbolism in wuthering heights one God, who attribute His mercy all the good things that come to them in this life (Tolkien 11). Tolkien suggests another Christian trait of a king in the form of idolatry: We have in fact a Christian English conception of the sofc fuel cell noble chief before Christianity, who could lapse (as could Israel) in times of temptation into symbolism in wuthering heights, idolatry (11). Such are the characteristics of a Christian hero king; out of this list of many characteristics I will discuss three. First of all, a Christian hero must rule over his desires and passions. He must not take unjustly what is not his. King Hrothgar and Beowulf do this very well. In the beginning of the The Role of Social Class poem, when Beowulf and his men arrive in Heorot, Hrothgar gives a speech about the allegiance he had with Beowulfs father.

In this speech he states that: There was a feud one time, begun by your father. Finally I healed the feud by paying: I shipped a treasure trove to the Wulfings, and Ecgtheow acknowledged me with oaths of allegiance. This passage shows that Hrothgar is a man not moved by passions and desires; he is selfless and symbolism in wuthering heights, heals the feud between two people with his own wealth. Out of the goodness of his heart, he gives Beowulf many gifts for his services to his kingdom (1042-1054). There is no mention of Hrothgar giving over to greed.

John Halverson, in The World of Beowulf states that The ruler who abandons his primary duties of Franklin The 14th President States protection and liberality becomes a monster, solitary and joyless (594). Hrothgar is no such monster. Even when Beowulf has to leave, Hrothgar lets him go back to his own people (1866-1869). Heights. Furthermore, Hrothgar actually gives Beowulf advice to not be proud and to not to give in to his desires since they will lead to a speedy downfall (1724-1768). Throughout the poem, Beowulf is given many things for his wondrous deeds of conquering Grendel and his mother. He is given a golden standard, chain-mail, a helmet, a sword and much more; all these he takes gladly for his services but the text never gives any evidence of his passions getting the better of him and sofc fuel cell, his taking things that dont belong to him (1019-1026). Furthermore, his character is praised by the narrator once the hero returns to heights Geatland, he was formidable in battle yet behaved with honor. and took no advantage; never cut down.

a comrade that was drunk, kept his temper. and, warrior that he was, watched and controlled. his God-sent strength and his outstanding. natural powers. (2178-2183) Secondly, Hrothgar and sofc fuel cell, Beowulf exhibit the Christian characteristics of love, sympathy, and benevolence.

Hrothgars love and benevolence are the strongest and most vivid in the story. Hrothgars benevolence is best seen in his generosity to Beowulf and symbolism in wuthering, his men by and Society Essay giving gifts and symbolism heights, shelter while in his hall (489-90, 1042-1054). He also shows his beneficence through adopting Beowulf as his own. This is due to an ancient Anglo Saxon practice which Michael D.C. Drout calls inheritance by of Lady Catherine and Prejudice deeds (208). His generosity is also praised by Beowulfs men on their way back to Geatland (1884-5). Hrothgars true Christian love is evident once Beowulf has to leave.

He gives Beowulf sound counsel how to live his life and embraced him as a son and then melts into tears. In Wuthering. The narrator describes the strength of Hrothgars love: And such was his affection. that he could not help being overcome: his fondness for the man was so deep-founded, it warmed his heart and wound the heartstrings. tight in his breast. (1876-1880) Beowulfs love is also exhibited in his powers of giving, especially once he is crowned king.

But even before he is crowned king, he gives some of his new treasures to his king Hygelac and his queen Hygd: Beowulf bestowed four bay steeds. to go with the armor, swift gallopers, all alike. So ought a kinsman to sofc fuel cell act, instead of plotting and planning in symbolism in wuthering heights secret. to bring people to grief, or conspiring to arrange.

the death of comrades (2164-2169). Of course this is art therapy, only a small amount to the rich array of things he gave his king and queen. However, his love and generosity are further evidenced after he becomes king by the words of his thanes. Wiglaf, the brave successor to in wuthering Beowulf, recalls the india's political system benevolence of Beowulf just before he goes to help his lord battle the dragon. He speaks of Beowulf as a ring-giver, one who gives war-gear and one who honored and judged us fit for this action, made me these lavish gifts (2635-40). At his funeral pyre, his soldiers ride around extolling their king and say that of all the kings upon earth/ he was the man most gracious and fair minded, / kindest to his people and keenest to win fame (3180-2). These men also exhibit the Christian heroic quality of what Tolkien called shepherd patriarchs (11).

Hrothgar is perhaps the best example of this though the symbolism other two do show some hints of Ware´s Christ Jesus this. Hrothgars prowess or goodness as a folces hyrde is first seen in his account of his dealings with Beowulfs father (Tolkien 11). Beowulfs father had begun a feud which he was unable to justify or fulfill and symbolism in wuthering, so Hrothgar healed the feud by paying (470). His actions are mediating and show his love and devotion to Book Review: The Man Essay his people and others by laying his life and wealth down for them. By paying the feud price, Hrothgar protects his own people and Ecgtheows people from being annihilated by the Wulfings.

There are many kennings that also describe Hrothgar as the shepherd king. One example is when Beowulf recounts his own prowess in battle. Robert Morey admits this when he says, Beowulfs sagacity and in wuthering, martial prowess make him an Essay exemplary masculine figure (486). The kenning keeper of his people is used to symbolism in wuthering heights describe Hrothgar as a shepherd king (609). Another kenning used is shelter in war to describe Hrothgar. Beowulf is also endowed with such titles; as Wiglaf prepares to sofc fuel cell help his lord in battle against the dragon, he calls Beowulf the shepherd of symbolism heights our land, once again denoting the Old Testament idea of being a shepherd king. Beowulf is Class and Society Essay, also called a warriors protector in in wuthering the poem (2337). Such kennings are very good evidence that these men were seen as the shepherds of their kingdoms and were trusted and honored for sofc fuel cell, their devotion to their people. Another central element to Christian heroism, and especially its fusion with Anglo Saxon paganism, is Beowulfs relationship with the monsters, namely Grendel, his dam, and symbolism, the dragon.

J.R.R. Tolkien and his memorable lecture Beowulf and the Critics , argues in india's defense of the usage of monsters in in wuthering heights this epic tale. Other critics have dismissed the story as a wild folk tale but Tolkien states that there was room for myth and heroic legend, and for blends of these in this story (4, 6). Tolkien states that the sofc fuel cell most renowned deed a hero of this time could ever do was. the slaying of the symbolism prince of The 14th States legendary worms. Although there is plainly considerable difference between the later Norse and the ancient English form of the story alluded to in Beowulf , already there it had these two primary features: the dragon, and the slaying of heights him as the chief deed of the greatest of heroeshe w?s wreccena wide m?rost. (6) Monsters come into play into many medieval tales but their roles are allegorical, as in on The Character Catherine de Bourgh and Prejudice Spensers Faerie Queen . Tolkien states that Beowulf is above that and therefore the poem is distinguished from other more Christian tales.

He states, Beowulfs dragon, if one wishes really to criticize, is symbolism in wuthering, not to be blamed for Pierce: President States Essay, being a dragon, but rather for not being dragon enough, plain pure fairy-story dragon. Heights. There are in the poem some vivid touches of the right kindas ?a se wyrm onwoc, wroht w?s geniwad; stonc ?fterstane, 2285in which this dragon is Review: The Man Essay, real worm, with a bestial life and in wuthering, thought of his own, but the india's political conception, none the less, approaches draconitas rather than draco : a personification of symbolism heights malice, greed, destruction (the evil side of heroic life), and of Social Class and Society Essay, of the undiscriminating cruelty of fortune that distinguishes not good or bad (the evil aspect of all life). (7) While this may infer allegory, Tolkien denies this and espouses that large symbolism is near the surface, but it does not break through, nor become allegory (7). As Tolkien would say, something greater is at work in this poem with regard to monsters (7). For a heroic tale, monsters are essential, fundamentally allied to the underlying ideas of the symbolism heights poem, which give it its lofty tone and high seriousness (Tolkien 7). But how does this epic poem treat monsters in sofc fuel cell a fusion of Anglo Saxon culture and Christendom? Within his lecture, Tolkien quotes an extended passage from an essay entitled Beowulf and the Heroic Age which compares real pagan heroic epics usage of monsters with that of Beowulfs usage: In the epoch of Beowulf a Heroic Age more wild and primitive than that of Greece is brought into touch with Christendom, with the Sermon on the Mount, with Catholic theology and ideas of Heaven and Hell. We see the difference, if we compare the wilder thingsthe folk-tale elementin Beowulf with the wilder things of Homer.

Take for example the tale of Odysseus and the Cyclopsthe No-man trick. Odysseus is struggling with a monstrous and symbolism, wicked foe, but he is not exactly thought of as struggling with the powers of darkness. Polyphemus, by Class Essay devouring his guests, acts in a way which is hateful to symbolism in wuthering heights Zeus and the other gods: yet the Cyclops is himself god-begotten and under divine protection, and the fact that Odysseus has maimed him is a wrong which Poseidon is slow to forgive. But the gigantic foes whom Beowulf has to meet are identified with the foes of God. Grendel and art therapy, the dragon are constantly referred to in language which is meant to recall the powers of darkness with which Christian men felt themselves to be encompassed. They are the symbolism in wuthering inmates of Hell, adversaries of Franklin Pierce: President United States God, offspring of symbolism Cain, enemies of mankind. Consequently, the matter of the main story of Beowulf, monstrous as it is, is Class and Society, not so far removed from common mediaeval experience as it seems to us to be from our own. Grendel hardly differs from the fiends of the pit who were always in symbolism in wuthering heights ambush to waylay a righteous man. And so Beowulf, for all that he moves in the world of the primitive Heroic Age of the art therapy Germans, nevertheless is almost a Christian knight. (8)

Within Beowulf , there is a fusion of Christendom and Northern culture with regard to heights what Tolkien calls Northern courage and the fact that monsters become the enemies of ece Dryhten , the eternal Captain of the Essay on The of Lady de Bourgh In Pride new (8,9). Man, h?le? under heofenum , is now seen in the Christian worldview as a mortal hemmed in a hostile world (Tolkien 9). Moreover, the symbolism in wuthering purpose of combining Scriptural allusions and northern ideas is that the reader understands the whole purpose of the epic. Notice how the aura of the poem is quite somber and ends with the death of the great hero, Beowulf. This is not an accident. Tolkien espouses that Man alien in a hostile world, engaged in a struggle which he cannot win while the world lasts, is assured that his foes are the foes also of Dryhten, that his courage noble in itself is also the highest loyalty: so said thyle and clerk (11). With this understanding let us look at the text at the monsters therein. The first blending of the Christian and pagan in regard to monsters is the allusion to history Grendels bloodline. He is of. Cains clan, whom the Creator had outlawed.

and condemned as outcasts. For the killing of in wuthering heights Abel. the Eternal Lord had exacted a price: Cain got no good from committing that murder. because the Almighty made him an Pierce: of the United States anathema. and out symbolism heights of the curse of his exile there sprang. ogres and elves and evil phantoms.

and the giants too that strove with God. time and again until he gave them their reward. (106-114) Grendel, an sofc fuel cell undoubtedly Northern monster, is poetically described as an enemy of God. Franz Klaeber states that Grendel, at any rate, while originally an ordinary Scandinavian troll, and passing in the poem as a sort of man-monster, is at the same time conceived of as an symbolism in wuthering heights impersonation of evil and darkness, even an incarnation of the Essay Christian devil (l). Symbolism In Wuthering Heights. This is india's, why the killing of monsters is the highest end of the hero; he must defeat the enemies of the Dryhten so that men may have hope. The author even uses a distinctive kenning to describe Grendel. Grendel is known as God-cursed brute or simply unhaelo in heights Old English as he ravages in Heorot (121).Grendel is india's political system, seen for being not only a pestilence to in wuthering heights the Danes but to God as well through his predator like behavior.

Ward Parks, in How Heroes Perceive Monsters in Beowulf, equates Grendel to a lion that pounces on a helpless deer (2) Grendels mother, another monster is seen as a swamp thing from hell (1518). It is interesting to note that in all the dealings with monsters thus far, Beowulf and his men always praise and thank God after they have defeated a monster. While Grendel and Franklin The 14th of the United States, his mother were incredible enemies, Beowulfs true match is in the dragon at the end. Not much study has been given to the dragon but it warrants proper study since it is far more evil than Grendel of his dam. As William Witherle Lawrence states in in wuthering his article The Dragon and Pierce: The 14th Essay, His Lair in Beowulf, The dragon in Beowulf does not appear to be a strange or unusual type(549). That is why Tolkien wrote that the symbolism in wuthering dragon was not dragon enough (7). Beowulfs battle with the creature is The 14th President United States Essay, of unparalleled proportions as the dragon breathes fire upon him and wounds Beowulf.

This unnamed dragon is much more fierce and evil than the heights other monsters in the story. Pierce: The 14th. Its symbolism in being evil in denoted in its behavior. As Thomas Klein would state in his philological treatise Stonc aefter stane, we come to understand that the heights dragon is indeed a creature not an elemental force (22). Felicia Jean Steele also confirms this by saying that, the dragon is a wyrm characterized first, and most significantly, by its sense of smell. The dragon is sofc fuel cell, animalistic, instinctive, and most unlike the human trespasser, who, with a dyrnan cr?fte, has enough skill to go unnoticed initially (139). In Wuthering. Another critic saw it as the greatest of internal evils, the perversion of the mind and will (qtd. in Nelson 1). Its rage is The Role Class and Society, mindless as it defends its hoard and resorts to weapons of greater power than Beowulf can wield. Dragons have interesting purposes in such Northern literature. Kathyrn Hume writes that a dragon in such tales follows one of four models. She states.

The monster exists to test the in wuthering protagonist and to affirm his status as professional hero. (2) The monster preys upon society, thus letting the hero put his strength to the service of sofc fuel cell others. (3) The supernatural being serves as a comic or ironic device for reducing exaggerated heroes to symbolism more human stature. (4) The monster forms part of a deliberate comment on the nature of heroism. (Hume 3) It would seem then that the second model is used in this tale since each monster is a plague to society and therefore the hero must fight to save his people; the ultimate example of Christian heroism. These monsters serve a purpose as a prey upon society but more ultimately as enemies of the india's system people and of God. Therefore Beowulf must destroy them. As a final testament to the fusion between the pagan culture found in this epic and elements of Christian heroism, one must consider the redemptive theme found at the very end of the story. Of all the Christian elements, this is perhaps the least studied element. However, a critic by the name of M. B. McNamee suggested that this story is an symbolism allegory of the Christian story of salvation (191). As has been hinted before by Tolkien, there is an obvious somber tone in Essay Character de Bourgh the poem that alludes to the sacrifice of heights Beowulf so that his people may be rid of the desolation of the dragon. With every redemption story there is someone who comes who is admired by and Society Essay all by his deeds and words but then he has a great struggle wherein the symbolism heights hero ultimately dies.

But unlike most tragedies, redemptive stories, with Beowulf being no exception, have ends which bring hope to those whom the hero died for. McNamee also finds the redemptive thread in this poem. While McNamee examines the entirety of the Class and Society Essay story for symbolism in wuthering heights, such a theme, I shall only look at the end since it is the most poignant. McNamee states that this final episode is dramatizing the price of salvationthe very life of the Savior Himself (203). McNamee explains it in this fashion: The literal story is Essay on The of Lady Catherine de Bourgh In Pride, again quite simple.

Beowulfs own people are being ravaged by symbolism in wuthering heights a fiery dragon whose treasure-hoard has been disturbed by a fugitive from justice. Essay On The Character De Bourgh And Prejudice. They are powerless to save themselves from the havoc wrought by the dragon, and in wuthering heights, hence Beowulf goes out to do battle with the fire-drake. He is led out to the lair of the dragon by the guilty follower who enraged the dragon in the first place. When the monster comes forth belching fire to meet his challenger, all Beowulfs followers flee in terror with one sole exceptionthe faithful Wiglaf, who stays with his master to the end. Beowulf succeeds in giving the dragon a mortal wound, but he himself has been mortally wounded by the beast in the struggle. He has saved his people and won for them the treasure hoarded by the dragon but at the price of his own life. Essay On The Character Of Lady And Prejudice. He expires at the ninth hour of the day, and the poem ends with the symbolism heights picture of his twelve followers circling his funeral mound singing his praises to the four corners of the world. (203) After hearing this summary, one who is familiar with Christian beliefs or who is a believer can obviously see the connection. McNamee also makes the connection between the reaction of Beowulfs followers and Beowulfs fight.

They flee the field and only Wiglaf remains (2596-2601). These are incredible similarities to the account in Review: Bruce The Man Christ Jesus the Bible and symbolism heights, Beowulfs death in the end is also very symbolic of that story. With such symbolism and United, plot narrative, one could hardly realize that this was really an old Anglo Saxon pagan tale. Beowulf , a narrative poem that nearly every English speaking student has or will read is symbolism in wuthering heights, perhaps the most undervalued text in the canon of Western Literature. Yet through a proper study, one may realize exactly how beautiful and well-crafted this epic really is. One should come to appreciate this text which has survived the horrors of the Vikings and Book Review: Bruce Jesus, come to us through all the ages as the one and only representative epic in the English language and heights, tradition. Just as Greece and Rome have their Odysseus, Achilles, and Aeneas, we have our Beowulf, Hrothgar, and Wiglaf. These heroes, in Essay on The Character of Lady and Prejudice whom the values of Christian heroism glisten, can become great models of courage and leadership, despite the tales antiquity.

Through the leadership of their people, their struggle against in wuthering mighty monsters, and their great redemptive sacrifice these men, especially Beowulf, demonstrate the fusion between Christian heroic values and Anglo Saxon pagan strength to make Beowulf one of the of Social and Society greatest epics of all time. Mention the name Beowulf in in wuthering anyones ears and you will receive one of two responses: a gasp of pure disgustUgh that book! I had to read it in high schoolor a cry of delightah Beowulf that wonderful heroic saga! While the majority of my peers would sadly be in the former position, I take my stand with the latter crowd; Beowulf is definitely one of my favorites. Book Ware´s Essay. Beowulf , anonymously written between the 8 th and 11 th centuries A.D., stands out in English literature for many reasons. It is one of the largest texts in Old English and symbolism in wuthering heights, stands as a good representation of Old English literature and Anglo-Saxon culture. The character Beowulf himself is quite famous for his heroism and kingly attitude.

The story of Beowulf is essentially a heathen poem but despite its heathen elements, it is also a Christian poem (Blackburn 1). Having read Homer and Virgil, whose epic poems are quite equal to Beowulf , I can remember that their material is sofc fuel cell, undoubtedly pagan due to its use of mythology and pagan heroism. However, Beowulf is much different and that makes it all the more interesting. Despite it being ostensibly pagan, it is imbued with many Christian elements. Among these elements are the acknowledgement of God, various Biblical descriptors and characters (like the story of the Flood and in wuthering, Grendel being a descendant of Cain), but more importantly, Christian heroism. Christian heroism is displayed throughout medieval and renaissance literature and surprisingly is seen even in this Old English text. Morte Darthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , and The Faerie Queen are examples of such literature where Christian heroism is vividly seen.

But Beowulf is not far removed from them. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the essentials of Christian heroism are described and praised in the poem making this epic poem the first English text where Christian heroism is embodied. There are two characters who exhibit Christian heroism, Beowulf and sofc fuel cell, King Hrothgar and each character has differing levels of Christian heroism. But before seeing how each of these characters embodies Christian heroism, I must define the features of Christian heroism. Levin L. Shucking gives some light on the subject as he gives Augustinian ideas of in wuthering heights what befits a Christian king/hero. The prince must be master of all his desires and passions, and especially, not yield power over himself to the greatest and for him the most dangerous sinpride (superbia), but remain modest and humble (39).

Second, his rule is to be one marked by love, sympathy, and benevolence (Shucking 39). Franklin Pierce: The 14th President Essay. The ideal Christian king/hero also desires to serve not command (Shucking 39). Shucking goes on to say that a true Christian king/hero is indulgent and pardons easily (39). If he is forced to act harshly, he tries to compensate by symbolism mercy and ample charity. His purpose is to bring and keep for himself and his people the true peace of God on earth (Shucking 39). He tries to maintain harmony and be both a lord and father to his people (Shucking 39). Other prominent church fathers like Sedulius Scotus wrote that being a peaceful king was the highest virtue a king could possess (Shucking 39). Even Charlemagne added the Latin name pacificus to his title to state his qualities as a peaceful king (Shucking 39).

Gregory, whom Shucking states was revered by the Anglo-Saxons, states that the highest virtue of Franklin Pierce: President States a Christian king is complete and humble devotion to Gods will (40). Shucking also hints that the Anglo Saxons knew this well since they wrote that the symbolism heights king was to be folces forfor and rihtwis hyrde ofer cristene heorde or the protector of the people and just shepherd over the Christian flock (40). As Shucking demonstrates later in his article, Christian kings must display some sort of intellectual prowess or wisdom. A true Christian hero is illuminated by his speaking too. J.R.R. Book Review: Bruce The Man Jesus Essay. Tolkien also discusses the Christianization of Beowulf, especially in symbolism its repetitions of the Old Testament (79). The shepherd patriarchs and kings of Franklin The 14th Israel are emulated in the text as being servants of the symbolism heights one God, who attribute His mercy all the good things that come to them in india's political this life (Tolkien 79). Tolkien suggests another Christian trait of a king in the form of idolatry: We have in fact a Christian English conception of the noble chief before Christianity, who could lapse (as could Israel) in times of temptation into symbolism, idolatry (79).

Such are the characteristics of a Christian hero king; out of this list of many characteristics I will discuss three. First of all, a Christian hero must rule over his desires and passions. He must not take unjustly what is not his. King Hrothgar and Book Review: Bruce The Man, Beowulf do this very well. In the beginning of the poem, when Beowulf and his men arrive in Heorot, Hrothgar gives a speech about the allegiance he had with Beowulfs father. In Wuthering Heights. In this speech he states that: There was a feud one time, begun by your father. Finally I healed the feud by paying: I shipped a treasure trove to the Wulfings, and Ecgtheow acknowledged me with oaths of allegiance. This passage shows that Hrothgar is Book Review: Christ Jesus, a man not moved by passions and desires; he is selfless and heals the feud between two people with his own wealth. In Wuthering. Out of the goodness of his heart, he gives Beowulf many gifts for his services to his kingdom (1042-1054).

There is no mention of Hrothgar giving over to greed. Even when Beowulf has to President United States leave, Hrothgar lets him go back to symbolism in wuthering his own people (1866-1869). Furthermore, Hrothgar actually gives Beowulf advice to not be proud and to Essay Character Catherine de Bourgh In Pride not to give in to his desires since they will lead to a speedy downfall (1724-1768). Throughout the poem, Beowulf is given many things for his wondrous deeds of conquering Grendel and his mother. He is given a golden standard, chain-mail, a helmet, a sword and much more; all these he takes gladly for his services but the text never gives any evidence of symbolism in wuthering heights his passions getting the better of him and his taking things that dont belong to him (1019-1026). Furthermore, his character is praised by the narrator once the hero returns to Geatland, he was formidable in battle yet behaved with honor. and took no advantage; never cut down. a comrade that was drunk, kept his temper.

and, warrior that he was, watched and controlled. his God-sent strength and his outstanding. Secondly, Hrothgar and Beowulf exhibit the Book Review: Bruce Ware´s The Man Christ Jesus Essay Christian characteristics of love, sympathy, and benevolence. Hrothgars love and benevolence are the strongest and most vivid in the story. Hrothgars benevolence is best seen in his generosity to Beowulf and his men by heights giving gifts and shelter while in his hall (489-90, 1042-1054). His generosity is also praised by Beowulfs men on their way back to Geatland (1884-5). Hrothgars true Christian love is evident once Beowulf has to leave.

He gives Beowulf sound counsel how to live his life and sofc fuel cell, embraced him as a son and symbolism in wuthering heights, then melts into tears. The narrator describes the strength of Book Bruce The Man Essay Hrothgars love: And such was his affection. that he could not help being overcome: his fondness for heights, the man was so deep-founded, it warmed his heart and wound the heartstrings. tight in his breast. (1876-1880) Beowulfs love is art therapy, also exhibited in his powers of symbolism in wuthering giving, especially once he is crowned king. But even before he is crowned king, he gives some of his new treasures to his king Hygelac and his queen Hygd: Beowulf bestowed four bay steeds. to go with the india's system armor, swift gallopers, all alike. So ought a kinsman to act, instead of plotting and planning in secret. to bring people to grief, or conspiring to arrange.

the death of comrades (2164-2169). Of course this is only a small amount to the rich array of things he gave his king and queen. However, his love and benevolence are further evidenced after he becomes king by the words of his thanes. Wiglaf, the heights brave successor to Beowulf, recalls the benevolence of Beowulf just before he goes to help his lord battle the Character Catherine de Bourgh and Prejudice dragon. He speaks of Beowulf as a ring-giver, one who gives war-gear and one who honored and judged us fit for this action, made me these lavish gifts (2635-40).

At his funeral pyre, his soldiers ride around extolling their king and in wuthering heights, say that of all the kings upon earth/ he was the man most gracious and fair minded, / kindest to his people and keenest to win fame (3180-2). Third and finally, these men exhibit the Christian heroic quality of what Tolkien called shepherd patriarchs (79). Hrothgar is perhaps the best example of this though the other two do show some hints of Book Review: Bruce The Man this. Hrothgars prowess or goodness as a folces hyrde is first seen in his account of his dealings with Beowulfs father (Tolkien 79). Symbolism In Wuthering Heights. Beowulfs father had begun a feud which he was unable to justify or fulfill and so Hrothgar healed the feud by paying (470). His actions are mediating and show his love and devotion to his people and The Role of Social and Society Essay, others by laying his life and wealth down for them. By paying the feud price, Hrothgar protects his own people and Ecgtheows people from heights, being annihilated by the Wulfings.

There are many kennings that also describe Hrothgar as the shepherd king. One example is when Beowulf recounts his own prowess in battle; the kenning keeper of his people is used to describe Hrothgar as a shepherd king (609). Another kenning used is shelter in war to describe Hrothgar. Beowulf is also endowed with such titles; as Wiglaf prepares to help his lord in Essay on The Character and Prejudice battle against the dragon, he calls Beowulf the shepherd of our land, once again denoting the symbolism in wuthering heights Old Testament idea of being a shepherd king. Beowulf is also called a warriors protector in the poem (2337). The 14th President Of The United States. Such kennings are very good evidence that these men were seen as the shepherds of their kingdoms and symbolism, were trusted and honored for their devotion to their people. While imbibed with various pagan elements, there are still a lot of Christian values to history be gleaned from the text. In Wuthering. True leadership and love are exhibited toward the thanes in the poem by two principle heroes, Hrothgar and Beowulf. It is interesting to note that each man possesses differing degrees of The Role Class and Society Essay Christian heroism and in exactly that order. Hrothgar can be argued to be the in wuthering most Christian of the men in this epic; his kindness, generosity, and Review: Bruce Ware´s The Man Christ Jesus, humility are almost excellent.

While Beowulf possesses the values of Christian heroism, his pride is undeniable. Heights. Had he explicitly followed the sofc fuel cell instructions of Hrothgar he might have lived longer. These characteristics are very honorable and symbolism in wuthering, are actually good models for leadership today thus making an almost 1200 year old epic poem still relevant today. Beowulf.
