bio lab reports Our AP Biology lab activities are designed to provide a wide variety of experiences. Spies. They will fall into two general categories: observational or skill labs, and experimental labs.#8221; Observational labs will mainly involve watching or observing natural phenomena occur or performing some scientific technique, while experimental labs will involve science process skills, such as hypothesis formation, manipulation of variables, gathering, tabulating and women in art, graphically displaying data, etc. Spies By Michael. In college, lab report requirements vary greatly. In Birmingham. Some are quite rigorous and by michael frayn, require that a review of the difference between sympathetic and empathetic pertinent scientific literature be included in spies by michael frayn the introduction. Between Sympathetic And Empathetic. Since we are greatly limited by time in this course, our write-ups will be brief and less rigorous than ones that you may do in by michael college. It is essential that you prepare for labs before coming to class. You will be required to and empathetic keep a lab notebook in which you will write prelabs, record data, and note any conclusions or thoughts that you have as you perform each lab.
At the beginning of frayn class on lab days, prelabs will be checked. Cable Tv. The following components should be completed: 1. By Michael. Title and date of the lab. 2. Cable Tv. Purpose - 1-2 sentences describing the major goal of the by michael experiment. And Empathetic. 3. Spies. Procedure - an easy to follow numbered list of why were unions formed steps that will be performed in the lab, written in spies by michael your own words. Define. For labs with several parts, divide your procedure accordingly. You may wish to sketch diagrams to frayn help you visualize the steps of the in birmingham lab. Once you are. Spies By Michael Frayn. done, you should be able to manhattan cable tv do your lab report without consulting with the spies frayn lab book.
4. List the divine theory following: independent and frayn, dependent variables, control and why were labor unions formed, experimental groups, constants, and hypothesis. 5. Spies By Michael Frayn. Data - As you write your prelab, create all the data tables you will need. Classical Conditioning Define. Read the spies by michael procedure. carefully to difference determine all the information you will be recording, and organize it neatly. Spies Frayn. Remember to include units at labor unions formed the top of by michael frayn each column. Between Sympathetic. 1. Fill in your data tables. Spies By Michael Frayn. 2. Manhattan Tv. Note any changes that you make to spies by michael the procedure. 3. Conclusions - Leave a space where you can jot down notes and other thoughts during the lab.
This will help you to write your lab report later. Lab reports are due two days after the completion of the lab in divine theory class. This gives you enough time to ask any questions about the lab or get help with concepts you don#8217;t understand. By Michael Frayn. Lab reports must be typed, handwritten work will not be accepted (exception: data tables and graphs may be done by and empathetic neatly hand). 1/2 credit will be given to lab reports that are late, up to frayn 24 hours. Remember that if you are tardy to divine theory class the spies by michael frayn day any assignment is due, your assignment will be counted late.
After 24 hours, reports will not be accepted. Cable Tv. Keep all returned lab reports. Labs constitute a significant portion of the AP exams. Spies By Michael. All experimental labs should follow this format: The Effect of ______ on Special Education Policy, _________. Be concise. (Instead of, #8220;environmental stimuli such as light and by michael, moisture#8221; write, #8220;light and moisture#8221;). Always list the specific variables you tested. Include the scientific name of cable tv organisms involved. Spies By Michael. Methods: What procedures were followed, what purposes did they serve, and women in art, what materials and spies by michael, equipment were used? For experimental labs and AP Labs, be sure to identify the School Outs independent and dependent variables, the spies frayn constants, and the control group. For observational labs explain what you did. Prostitution In Birmingham. Never use personal pronouns.
Do not create a list of materials, just include them within the by michael context of difference and empathetic your procedure. At the spies beginning of Outs your procedure, explain the #8216;big picture#8217; of the lab. By Michael. Explain what biological processes we are trying to Education Policy Essay learn more about. If the lab has several sections, revisit this in each section. Include relevant vocabulary terms in spies a way that demonstrates your knowledge. Write in the past tense. Your purpose is to communicate what you#8217;ve done, not give someone directions. Use the impersonal tense. (Instead of, #8220;We made choice chambers. In Art. .#8220; write, #8220;Choice chambers were made. . #8220;). Explain how data were gathered.
Include your hypothesis, and frayn, briefly explain your reasoning. When writing your hypothesis, be as specific as possible about difference sympathetic and empathetic, what you are measuring. Spies Frayn. Ex: If pill bugs are given a choice, they will prefer a moist environment to a dry one. Divine Theory. Better: If pill bugs are placed in a choice chamber, more will be found on the moist side than on the dry side at spies by michael frayn any given interval. If you performed any statistical analysis, including calculating an average, this should be in Education Policy your procedure. Include the by michael scientific name of the organism you are testing, and how you obtained your specimens. Results: This part of the women in art report will display, in frayn table form and with a proper title, the data that you collected. Manhattan Cable Tv. It should also include any graphs labeled properly and in proper graph form.
It should be neatly and clearly presented. If the lab is observational in by michael nature, you should include diagrams and/or descriptions of structures (labeled as instructed), chemical reactions, behaviors, etc. DO NOT FUDGE YOUR DATA!! Put only the labor formed data that you, or your lab group, or the by michael class collected, not what you think that you should have seen. Cable. Use graph paper to spies graphically display your data wherever appropriate. Give figures a number and School Drop Essays, a title, too. Figures are any kind of drawing or picture, and graphs. Ex: Figure 1: Pill bug (top view) Figure 2: Pill bug (side view) Figure 3: Average number of pill bugs present in spies wet choice chamber. Women. (In the frayn above example, the first 2 figures are drawings, the Needs Essay third is a graph.) When graphing your data, only graph the average values of spies by michael your trials, not the divine theory data from spies frayn, every trial. (Often, the reason why several trials are done is so we can average them and reduce error). High Drop Outs Essays. Be sure to label your axes and include relevant units. If necessary, include a key.
Discussion: Here you present a summary of the frayn data generated by the lab. Put into your own words what the numbers or observations tell you. How do you interpret the data or observations in light of Education your hypothesis or your own expectations? Do not make the spies by michael mistake of looking for the right answer and please do not ask, what was supposed to School Drop Essays happen? Nature does not lie, but is often frustratingly difficult to figure out. In this section you must discuss YOUR results. If you come up with results that do not make sense, examine your methods and spies by michael, materials for sources of experimental error and difference between sympathetic and empathetic, describe them here. By Michael. For purely observational exercises, your discussion should include reactions to manhattan what you have just done and spies frayn, learned. Special Education Essay. Additionally, error should be thoroughly discussed. This is, perhaps, the most important part of the lab discussion.
Your discussion of error will help the reader decide whether or not your experiment is valid or invalid. Note: for our purposes in by michael this class, measurement errors are not acceptable because this could be used as an Education Essay excuse on frayn, every lab, and does not that you are thinking on how the design or execution of this experiment could be improved. It is prostitution, assumed by your instructor that measurements were take accurately. Refer to your tables and spies, figures and explain important findings. Use your data to difference between sympathetic support your statements. Only use the spies by michael frayn word #8220;significant#8221; if you#8217;ve done a statistical analysis. Classical Conditioning. (Significant means something different to frayn scientists than it does in a nonscientific sense). Divine Theory. Your hypotheses can be #8220;supported#8221; or #8220;not supported#8221; by the data, they cannot be #8220;proved#8221; or #8220;disproved.#8221; Use the impersonal tense. (Rather than #8220;We believe . . . Spies By Michael Frayn. ,#8221; write, #8220;It was found. . . High Drop. .#8221;). Always be as specific as you possibly can be. Frayn. (Instead of #8220;Most of the labor unions time . Spies Frayn. . . Difference And Empathetic. ,#8221; write #8220;For 7 of the 10 time intervals examined. Frayn. . . Cable. .#8221;). By Michael Frayn. Don#8217;t describe your data as #8220;vague#8221; or #8220;inconclusive.#8221; If a trend that you thought would exist, doesn#8217;t, that doesn#8217;t mean the data are vague. Divine Theory. The absence of evidence is spies by michael frayn, not evidence of absence.
When describing sources of error, don#8217;t include irregularities in women in art the environment that you controlled. (Ex: The florescent lights in our room affect your control group the spies frayn same as your experimental group, because they are on the whole time. Therefore, they#8217;re not a source of error. Prostitution. This is by michael frayn, why we do a control in the first place!) Always be exact in your terminology. Women. (Ex: #8220;dry choice chamber#8221; is frayn, better than #8220;dry environment#8221;). Be sure you have a complete understanding of terms before you use them. Women In Art History. Whenever trying to in birmingham explain a behavior or an adaptation, it may help to look at spies by michael frayn it from a natural selection perspective. (Think: How is it an advantage to School the pill bugs survival and/or reproduction to find a moist environment?) Be aware of spies by michael what you are measuring. Difference Between. (A pill bug#8217;s #8216;preferences,#8217; #8216;desires,#8217; or #8216;needs,#8217; are not measurable. Its movement, or its presence in frayn a certain choice chamber, is measurable). Conditioning. Analysis questions: In this section, put the answers to ALL questions asked within the by michael lab, and at cable the end of the lab. Open only to senior majors in PPE. Student arranges with a faculty member to do an honors thesis on a suitable topic. PPE 460 Research in Behavioral Ethics (Dimant) In reality, our understanding of different mechanisms and (economic) relationships is hampered by the lack of data. Spies? More often than not, either the observation itself is difficult or the data is not reliable. Tv? Over the last decades, economic experiments have become a vital part of the spies frayn, scientific discourse, facilitating our understanding of the world we live in (much like in between Biology, Chemistry, Physics or the like). Economic experiments allow exploring economic behavior under controlled conditions by spies frayn generating observations under different experimental designs and manhattan cable controlled conditions. Pioneering this field of research, Daniel Kahneman and Vernon Smith were awarded the Nobel memorial prize in recognition of their work on behavioral and experimental economics.
In this course, we provide you with the methodology of how to develop a research idea and a proper experimental design that allows to explore this idea. Essentially, you will learn how to think about ideas, generate predictions, and how to use economic experiments to test them. PPE 475 Competitions and frayn Competitive Behavior (Hart) Competitions constitute an important part of social and economic interactions, such as those between athletes, lawyers or developers. We will explore the psychological and manhattan cable physiological mechanisms behind competitive behavior, and frayn its personal and societal implications. We will explore the following topics, among others: How our brains and our society norms affect the intensity of competition; how the social context affects our willingness to compete and exert costly effort; the consequences of competitions for contestants’ profit, and for by michael frayn, their subsequent behavior even beyond the competition itself (for example, how rivalry affects subsequent behavior). The course will illuminate different aspects of competitive behavior, providing a fresh angle on the benefits and drawbacks of difference between sympathetic and empathetic, competitions. PPE 475 Network Analysis (Sontuoso) This course addresses elements of Network Science as relevant for analyzing the connectedness of spies by michael, economic or, more generally, social phenomena. Building on ideas from computer science, sociology and economics, the course will examine the properties of manhattan cable, networked structures and the behavior of agents within these networks.
The models presented in this course will aim to explain how such networked structures may determine phenomena including the spies, spread of ideas, social norms, market practices and financial crises. (The course is designed for an interdisciplinary audience and requires no theoretical prerequisites, but it will often present material drawn from formal disciplines.) PPE 475 Modelling Choice Behavior (Bhatia) This course will examine mathematical and why were labor unions formed computational models of individual choice behavior. Spies Frayn? It will cover modeling techniques from psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and economics, and divine theory will apply these techniques to a range of diverse behavioral domains. This course will also examine closely related theories of learning, memory, and by michael frayn reaction time. There are no theoretical prerequisites for divine theory, this class, though students should have some familiarity with simple mathematics, statistics, or programming. PPE 475 Fairness Altruism (Dillenberger)
The course is designed to be an integrative experience, drawing on knowledge from economics and by michael psychology to Special Education Needs understand the by michael frayn, role of fairness in behavior. PPE 201/ECON 013 is a strict pre-requisite for this course. PPE 475 Economics of divine theory, Crime and Corruption: An Interdisciplinary Perspective (Dimant) This is an undergraduate research seminar tackling the topic of crime and corruption from an spies by michael, interdisciplinary perspective. Our focus will lie on understanding the mechanism and motivation to engage in criminal and corrupt behavior from the viewpoint of, among others, economics, psychology, and criminology. Particular light will be shed on criminological theories explaining criminal behavior. In Art History? Students will develop and apply this knowledge to a well-known criminal case. PPE 476 Thinking with Models (Funcke) The primary focus of the by michael frayn, course is on understanding, designing, and analyzing simulation models. Students will come away from the course prepared to apply these models in a wide variety of interesting contexts.
This course focuses on (1) modern simulation-based metaheuristics and on (2) agent-based simulation models in the social sciences, especially in economic, in commercial and in strategic (game-theoretic) contexts. On the metaheuristic side, we focus on evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, as applied to constrained optimization problems, which are prevalent in business practice. Regarding (2), agent-based models are a relatively recent form of Education Needs, computer simulation that seek to explain and predict complex social phenomena “from the bottom up”, through interactions of comparatively simple agents. The course reviews experimental and theoretical results, and exposes the spies, students to modern development environments for, as well as successful applications of, this form of simulation. A modest amount of programming will be expected of and empathetic, students. All required programming knowledge will, however, be covered, and covered gently, in the course. The class is intended to be taken by students without prior programming experience. Our programming environments will be NetLogo, which is surprisingly fun and used in both education and scientific research. 008 (PHIL 008) The Social Contract Society Sector (Freeman) REC: F 10-11 AM, 11-12 NOON, and 12-1 PM. This is a critical survey of the history of western modern political philosophy, beginning from the spies frayn, Early Modern period and concluding with the 19th or 20th Century.
Our study typically begins with Hobbes and ends with Mill or Rawls. The organizing theme of our investigation will be the idea of the Social Contract. We will examine different contract theories as well as criticisms and proposed alternatives to the contract idea, such as utilitarianism. Besides the above, examples of authors we will read are Locke, Rousseau, Hume, Mill and Marx. 036 (ECON 036) Law and why were labor unions Economics (Staff) Prerequisite(s): ECON 001 or ECON 010.

This course is about strategically interdependent decisions. Spies? In such situations, the outcome of your actions depends also on the actions of others. When making your choice, you have to think what the others will choose, who in turn are thinking what you will be choosing, and so on. Game Theory offers several concepts and Special Essay insights for understanding such situations, and for. making better strategic choices. Spies By Michael? This course will introduce and develop some basic ideas from game theory, using illustrations, applications, and cases drawn from business, economics, politics, sports, and even fiction and movies. Some interactive games will be played in class. Divine Theory? There will be little formal theory, and the only pre-requisites are some high-school algebra and having taken Econ 1. However, general numeracy (facility interpreting and doing numerical graphs, tables, and arithmetic calculations) is very important. This course will also be accepted by the Economics department as an Econ course, to be counted toward the minor in spies Economics (or as an Econ elective).
203 (PSYC 265) Behavioral Economics and Psychology (Bhatia) Prerequisite(s): ECON 1. This course will introduce you to the study of choice, and will examine in detail what we know about how people make choices, and how we can influence these choices. This is an undergraduate research seminar tackling the topic of crime and corruption from an interdisciplinary perspective. Our focus will lie on understanding the mechanism and cable tv motivation to engage in criminal and corrupt behavior from the viewpoint of, among others, economics, psychology, and criminology. Particular light will be shed on criminological theories explaining criminal behavior. Students will develop and frayn apply this knowledge to a well-known criminal case. 475 Public Choice and Public Policy (Sontuoso)
This course applies Public Choice theory to the analysis of contemporary policy issues: specifically, it aims to provide an accessible introduction to the analytical tools of economics as applied to the study of the behavior of individual actors in the governmental sector. Each class will review some positive theoretical framework(s), such as the foundations of the divine theory, rational choice theory, approaches to the aggregation of preferences, strategic behavior, voting methods, accounts of cooperation, collective action, public goods, and institutions. The last part of each class will then critically apply theoretical knowledge to relevant contemporary policy issues, including current debates on governmental decision-making processes in the US and EU, lobbying in democracies, international security, greenhouse gas reduction, etc. Note: part of the program contains a theoretical (formal) component. 475 Trust and spies frayn Deception (Hart) Social interactions such as coalition formation, negotiation and bargaining, as well as day-to-day interactions between individuals, all involve the ability to mask, and divine theory uncover, non-cooperative intentions: Social norms, business etiquette, and common courtesy often compel people to mask selfish intentions. The seminar will describe theories and research findings regarding trustworthiness and its counterpart, deception. We will discuss the nature of trust and by michael distrust; examine signals that may convey cooperative and deceptive intentions and people's ability to women in art detect such signals; and explore the consequences of frayn, trust, distrust and deception in different contexts. 475 Modeling of Social Phenomena (Funcke) During the 20th century social science, and in particular economics, went through a process of increased formalization.
The period produced a library of models of social phenomena, many competing ones. In this course we will briefly browse the library, with the intention to explore classical theoretical perspectives of what is a better model and ponder how increased normalization affects the social sciences. In the second part of the course we will engage in simple mathematical modeling of social phenomena. As a group we will iteratively criticize and refine a model, study its implications and women in art sketch strategies for testing it. 475 (PHIL 359) Social Norms (Bicchieri)
This is an undergraduate research seminar covering interdisciplinary research in psychology, philosophy, sociology and behavioral economics related to social norms. Social norms are informal institutions that regulate social life. We will devote particular attention to the following questions: What is a good, operational definition of spies by michael, social norms? Is there a difference between social and difference between sympathetic moral norms?
How can we measure whether a norm exists, and the conditions under which individuals are likely to spies by michael comply with it? Are behavioral experiments a good tool to answer question 3? How do norms emerge? How are norms abandoned? What is the role of trendsetters in norm dynamics? 475 (PSYC 478) Obedience (Royzman)
Though almost half a century old, Milgram’s 1961-1962 studies of “destructive obedience” continue to puzzle, fascinate, and alarm. The main reason for their continued grip on the field’s attention (other than the boldness of the idea and classical conditioning elegance of execution) may be simply that they leave us with a portrait of frayn, human character that is radically different from the one that we personally wish to endorse or that the wider culture teaches us to accept. In this seminar, we will take an in-depth look at manhattan tv these famous studies (along with the more recent replications) and explore their various psychological, political and philosophical ramifications. As with other seminars, this course has a number of intellectual goals that go far beyond simply rarifying one’s understanding of a particular content area (important and generative as it may be). One such a goal is to enable you to spies by michael frayn think critically (though not disparagingly) about other people’s research and theoretical claims that ensue from it, all with the hope that you can then apply the self-same critical acumen to your own future work. Second, I hope that our interactions throughout the classical define, course will offer a hospitable environment for spies, developing (and exchanging) creative ideas of your own.
Your work on why were labor, your individual reaction papers and on the term paper in by michael frayn particular will be a key element in achieving this goal. Lastly, I hope that, along with other upper-level courses, this seminar will offer a sensible (yet informal) introduction to psychological research methodology and research ethics. This objective will be met primarily through class discussions and divine theory some additional readings. Summer Session 1: TR: 9 AM - 12:50 PM.
The course studies the fundamental principles of decision-making and applies them to spies by michael a variety of social activities. The decision-making is analyzed in terms of its uncertainty, rationality, effectiveness, and normative connotations. After the notion of tv, rationality is introduced, rational decisions are scrutinized as individual choices that may or may not affect other individuals and their choices. In some situations the choices are predictable with high probability, in others with high uncertainty. The nature of spies by michael frayn, situations influences the mode of rationality applied. In the game theoretical situations, for instance, the efefctive choice must reach an equilibrium, i.e. History? a mutual solution acception for all rational participants. The course reevises the theory and spies provides applicaitons to Special Education Needs Essay cases of cooperation, defection, resoluteness, etc. as well as complex cases. Possible references for the course are Amaratya Sen, Itzhak Gilboa and by michael Davide Kreps.
This course may be used to count towards the PPE 201 Strategic Reasoning Common Core Requirement. Summer Session 2: TR: 1:15 PM - 5:05 PM. Political competition is an important topic to study and understand because it may have consequences for a country, its international relations and its performance. The aim of the course is to introduce the students to what is manhattan tv political competition, how political competition and spies market competition differ, to measurement issues and to use data and methodological techniques available to investigate the importance of divine theory, political competition within and across countries. During the course the theory explained will be accompanied by examples and articles that will help to clarify the concepts, to understand how to frayn use available data to difference between study political competition and spies its effects on manhattan cable tv, e.g. Spies Frayn? economic performance of countries.
Our societyindeed, your everyday lifeis fundamentally shaped by risk. Why Were Labor Formed? At least that’s what many prominent social theorists think and, after this course, I bet you’ll think that, too. Humanity has been attempting to by michael predict and control the future since ancient times, but thinking about decisions in terms of risk is define a relatively new way of spies frayn, seeing the world. For much of human history, people looked to gods for signs about the divine theory, future and saw disasters as divine retribution for the transgressions of the spies, past. But as the scientific thought of the Enlightenment eroded deterministic thinking, the natural and social world came to be seen as uncertain and random, but with patterns that could mathematically be developed into probabilities. Such statistical thinking about costs and benefits came to shape everything from gambling to divine theory public health and birthed whole fields and industries from actuarial science to personalized genomics. In each class we will study a single keyword related to our core conceptsrisk, disaster, and predictionand in each investigation we will analyze the by michael frayn, keyword’s meaning, its history, and how it functions in Education Policy Essay the social world. This course will offer you a conceptual and by michael frayn historical understanding of the industries of risk and disaster and will give you the tools to critically assess technologies of prediction. This is manhattan tv a fully online course. In many ways the course is like an on-campus courseit maintains the spies by michael frayn, same rigor as the on-campus version and you are still expected to “meet” at specific times and to Needs Policy Essay turn in assignments on specific dates.
However, our “meetings” will be virtual and will take place in a video conferencing system called New_Row. We are all touched in some way or other by the practical and moral challenges raised by illness, disability, conception, birth, and death. But, second, although the issues raised within bioethics are intensely personal and practical, they also reflect philosophical concerns taken up within ethical theory, such as questions about moral status, autonomy, truth-telling and justice. A central theme running throughout this course is the relationship between ethical theory, on Special Needs Policy, the one hand, and the actual practices and experiences of spies, facing choices about cable, health and mortality, on the other. We will discuss a number of particular bioethical challenges faced by ordinary people, including abortion, treatment for severely disabled newborns, reproductive technology, confidentiality, informed consent, advance directives, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and distributive justice within the health care system.
As we explore these issues, we will not shy away from the more abstract philosophical questions they raise, just as we will consider how actual practical challenges serve as crucial test cases for ethical theories. Students will be responsible for producing a series of writing assignments, completing a number of worksheets and exams, and actively contributing to class discussion. PPE 073 (PHIL 073) Being Human (Gibbons) This course examines some of the central theoretical and applied questions of ethics. For example, what is the good life? These will be among the frayn, most important issues for the 21st century.
In this class we will consider such questions as fairness in the international economy (including trade and labor standards); international labor migration and “brain drain”; duties to promote development in less-developed countries; whether and between sympathetic and empathetic when the debt burdens of less-developed or burdened countries should be forgiven; and how we might address shared burdens relating to the environment. The class will look in particular at the aspects of these issues relevant to by michael frayn moral and political philosophy, though we will also consider economic and other social scientific perspectives when this proves useful. The seminar will be based on reading and discussion [not lecture!] of a number of recent important texts on these issues. The majority of the Special Needs, course grade will be based on a significant paper due at the end of the semester, though there will likely be a small number of very short reaction papers assigned through the semester as well. PPE 475-402 (HIST 455) Risk and Society (Wiggins) Since at least Herodotus, historians have been writing about humanity’s attempts to predict dangers and spies control futures. But while a concern for the future and strategies to mitigate accidents have existed for much of recorded time, the concept of risk is a relatively young construction, emerging only in early modernity. Divine Theory? In this course, we investigate the concept of the risk in order to understand how it became a central organizing force in by michael the modern periodperhaps even the defining characteristic of modernityand, importantly, how it came to be seen as manageable. In the course’s first unit, we read the foundational materials of the theory of the “risk society”Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens’ early work. Then, in unit 2, move to in art selections from historians of knowledge who trace the epistemic shifts that developed modern concepts of risk and frayn eventually opened the possibility for its management through the use of statistical probabilities.
While the most critical developments in the conception of risk took place in Europe across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, unit 3 moves across the Atlantic to investigate the ways in which risk and, especially the desire to mitigate it, shaped the United States. Divine Theory? In this unit (our largest of the course), we will see how risk assessment and management grew into the largest business in the world. Here, we will look at statistics, actuarial science, insurance, speculation, and by michael frayn financial capital. Along the way, we will see many instances in which categories of identityrace, class, gender, sexuality, abilityare tied deeply into the business of discriminating risk. Finally, the between sympathetic, concluding unit reassesses the concept of the by michael, risk society through the recent past and possible futures as it considers catastrophic threats that remain pressingnuclear war, chemical waste, genetic engineering, global climate change, and divine theory systemic financial collapse.

At a very young age he lived in the attic of an apartment raised by spies frayn, his mother, alcoholic father and two younger brothers. Classical Conditioning Define? His life began with not only the unhappiness that follows an alcoholic parent, but was forced into following the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Both were well established, and frayn quite good, singers at the court of the local prince Max Friedrich. (Machlis 232) Young Ludwig admired his more talented grandfather, but grew ill of his father’s menacing lessons. Needs Essay? The boy began his music lessons with the piano at the age of only four. “Beethoven’s Bonn friend, Franz Gerhard Wegeler, recalled watching ‘the doings and sufferings of our Louis’ from the window of a friend’s house.
The stout, stocky little boy with unruly black hair and expressive grayish eyes would stand on a stool so that his fingers could reach the piano and would thus go through the exercises his father had given him, sometimes crying in the process.” (Schwaegermann ) Apparently, the frayn, goal that Beethoven’s father wanted to classical define, accomplish was to train his son to be the next Mozart, or WunderKinder (Wonder Child). Beethoven’s passion for by michael, music was not extinguished by his father’s behavior. Even throughout his boyhood schooling the young Ludwig slacked in his liberal arts studies, but was always enthusiastic for musical lessons. He carried on with his father’s musical instruction until the age of eight. At which time, his father planned for him to begin lessons with an old Court organist, the conditioning define, Fleming van den Eeden. (Schwaegermann) After this point Beethoven began to by michael, study with a plethora of mentors, who ranged from friends of the family to other family members themselves.
At the age of ten the boy quit school and conditioning became an apprentice musician at the Bonn court under the composer Christian Gottlob Neefe. Throughout the 1780’s the young Beethoven studied under Neefe who used Johann Sebastian Bach as a “cornerstone of instruction”. From this time period spanning to the 1802 is spies frayn labeled as Ludwig’s “early” period of composition. (Encarta Online) The time period labeled as the “early” works of Beethoven was quite dynamic. During this time frame Beethoven achieved great musical works, but also suffered severe losses. One of the most impacting years on the artist was 1787. The year began with a wonderful gift. Beethoven was able to perform for difference between and empathetic, his idol ,Mozart, in Vienna. Unfortunately, his spirits didn’t remain too high as his loving mother died several months later.
Beethoven continued his compositions and studies in Bonn through 1792. By the age of 22 the prodigy had “composed numerous songs: three piano sonatas, piano variations, chamber music for various ensembles, several concertos, and the cantatas.” (Stanley 8) In 1792 Beethoven made his final journey to Vienna to study with Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. Frayn? Unknown to Beethoven at that time, he was to live out his life in Vienna. “Hailed as a genius and divine theory a master of improvisation at the piano, Beethoven soon made a name for himself, and by 1794 was known throughout Europe. He faithfully learned the frayn, Classical Viennese styles and traditions in music, and then proceeded throughout his career to completely revolutionize them. Manhattan Cable Tv? His earliest compositions reflect the classical restraint of Haydn and Mozart.” (Sherrane) At this point, Beethoven was surrounded by a vast number of wealthy and spies frayn influential people. Special Education Needs Policy? Funny enough, Ludwig van Beethoven was aided by the ‘van’ in by michael frayn, his name. Many people of the aristocratic society mistook the ‘van’ to represent nobility (as with the German ‘Von’). (Harrison) In 1795 Beethoven was pleased with his brother’s decision to take up residency in Vienna.
Also in this year, Beethoven began to play in public concerts. This concert was organized by difference between sympathetic, his mentor Haydn. His music selections included Mozart, Haydn, as well as his own. Amazingly, Ludwig was not keen on spies by michael performing publicly. As a matter of fact, Beethoven only gave one more public appearance in the “early” period and declined numerous other offers to share with the audience his musical skills.
It has been postulated that the composer may have already suffered minor hearing loss, as well as having an “overly suspicious” personality that caused him to hide from the public eye. Divine Theory? (Stanley 17) Beethoven’s “early” composition years ended in the start of the 1800’s. The time period that ranged from the young prodigies’ early lessons with his father through his studies with great composers, such as Neefe and Haydn, resulted in by michael, very fruitful years. “The combination of forceful, dramatic power with dreamy introspection in Beethoven’s music had made a strong impression in Viennese aristocratic circles and helped win him generous patrons. Yet just as his success seemed assured, he was confronted with the loss of that sense on which he so depended, his hearing.” (Encarta Online) The next ten years would later be described by historians as the difference between, “Middle Period” of Beethoven’s compositional years. This period, is by michael frayn described as introducing “the characteristics more closely associated with the nineteenth century: strong dynamic contrasts, explosive accents, and longer movements.” (Machlis 233) “Now, having assimilated the Classical style, Beethoven forges his own more dramatic and women in art monumental one, while concentrating more on by michael the symphony and concerto, and large scale choral and dramatic works.” (Stanley 4) The work that begins the start of the middle period (in 1803) is the Special Education Needs Essay, Symphony number 3, Eroica. The following symphonies up to spies by michael frayn, and including number 8, which was finished in 1812, all belong to the middle period. Why Were Labor Unions? This era also includes: the Piano Concerto number 4 and 5, the Violin Concerto, the Razumovsky quartets, as well as more chamber works and piano sonatas (to include the Waldstein and the Appassionata). (Stanley 10-11) As mentioned above, the year 1802 ended with a crisis for Beethoven. Spies Frayn? With the realization that his hearing was ever so worsening and the acceptance that his most valued instrument, his ears, would eventually fail him completely; Beethoven plotted drastic measures.
The autumn of 1802, at a village outside Vienna he wrote a will-like document coined the “Heiligenstadt testament”. In this letter, addressed to women in art, his two brothers, he describing his bitter unhappiness over spies frayn his hearing loss in terms that suggested he wished death. This death would be from women in art his own hands. Spies Frayn? (Harrison). He described in this letter how “he was torn between the destructive forces of his soul and Essay his desire to live and create: ‘But little more and I would have put an end to my life. Only art…withheld me. By Michael Frayn? Ah, it seems impossible to leave the conditioning, world until I have produced all that I felt called upon to produce, and so I endured this wretched existence.'” (Machlis 232) As it turns out, the letter was never sent to spies frayn, his family and was only discovered after his death. Fortunately, Ludwig’s passion for music swayed his inner turmoil into women choosing life over spies frayn suicide.
Falling into the “Middle Period” is a piece of work entitled the Symphony number 5. This dramatic piece is perhaps the best known of classical all symphonies. “Symphony number 5 in C minor op. 67 from 1808 is the most thematically concentrated of Beethoven’s works. Variants of the four-note motif that begins this symphony drive all four movements. The dramatic turning point in the symphony–where a sense of foreboding, struggle, or mystery yields to a triumphant breakthrough–comes at the transition to spies, the final movement, where the music is reinforced by the entrance of the trombones. Beethoven uses here a large-scale polarity between the darker sound of manhattan tv C minor and the brighter, more radiant effect of C major, which is held largely in reserve until the by michael, finale.” (Encarta Online)
The “Late” period began in 1812, followed by several years in women in art history, which Ludwig is struck with the preoccupation of frayn multiple personal issues. Special Needs Essay? The first of which became evident with a discovered love poem letter. Antonia Brentano appears to be the intended receiver of Beethoven’s famous letter. The letter dates from July 1812 and apparently marks the collapse of by michael frayn Beethoven’s hopes to seek happiness through marriage. As like many of his love affairs it turned up becoming a failed attempt.
It was proven time-and-again that Beethoven fell in love with many aristocratic women, but always suffered rejection. Following this last blow, Beethoven’s work declined dramatically, and in art during the “Late” period he was generally depressed and unproductive. 1815 saw the death of Beethoven’s beloved brother. Spies Frayn? But the tragedy did not end there. Why Were Labor Unions Formed? Another burden that the artist was burdened with was his nephew Karl, the son of his deceased brother. For five years Beethoven was plagued with legal disputes against Karl’s mother for sole custody of the boy. Even after Ludwig won custody over his nephew, Karl continuously provided anxiety to Beethoven from then on. One of which was Karl’s failed suicide attempt of July 1826. “About 1813 there is a marked slowing in spies by michael, Beethoven’s output of major works, and for the next 6 years or so, he produced mainly smaller pieces, songs and song arrangements. There are many reasons for this; his deafness by now was quite advanced (he had ceased giving public performances as a pianist) and this isolation was producing an inner transformation (spiritually). He was also taking more time over his works, with major compositions taking sometimes many years to perfect.” (Harrison)
Though the “Late Period” proved to be a slower period for Beethoven, he still produced many wonderful pieces. His works include the last 6 Piano sonatas, Symphony no.9 ‘Choral’, last 5 String quartets, and the ‘Missa Solemnis’. This time period also included the production of his only opera “Fedelio”. During these final years “Beethoven used more chromatic harmonies and developed a skeletal language from which all nonessentials were rigidly pared away. It was a language that transcended his time.” (Machlis 233) While in divine theory, the works of by michael his tenth symphony Beethoven would take on women history one more struggle that he would fail to by michael, overcome.
During an open carriage ride through severe weather Ludwig contracted an illness that proved fatal. On March 26, 1827 at the age of only 57 Ludwig von Beethoven died. “Some 10,000 people lined the streets of Vienna at his funeral to pay homage to women history, the composer who had forever changed the musical climate of Western Europe. With Beethoven’s passing, the stage was set for the onslaught of Romanticism in western music.” (Sherrane) Encarta Online. Beethoven. February 5, 2003. Harrison, Peter. The Beethoven Reference Site.

Literary Analysis Essay: 1984 by George Orwell. “No one is free, even the by michael, birds are chained to the sky.” Bob Dylan said this probably not knowing its profound connection with George Orwell’s novel “1984”, but the as well could be in “1984”. Orwell depicts a totalitarian dystopian world where there is no freedom and citizens are being brainwashed constantly. Without any sense of individual fairness, people work for the party just like the gear wheels in a machine. Classical Define! In order to achieve this, the by michael frayn, politicians in “1984” suppress people’s thinking and eliminate their freedom by creating fear through propaganda, strict laws and incessant surveillances. In “1984”, lies, myths and false information controls the thinking of the tv, citizens. The Party uses propaganda as the spies by michael frayn, deadliest weapon of control. Propaganda increases the citizens’ morale and makes them think that what the manhattan tv, party tells them to do is always right. There are mainly two types of propaganda, one changes truth, so-called doublethink, and another creates fear. “Doublespeak” can be seen frequently in the world of 1984. The party’s big slogan “WAR IS PEACE.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” (George Orwell, 4) is an good example. The idea of the slogan is to convince the citizens that what they want, is what they already have. Only war can make peace and harmony, so peace is by michael frayn no longer peace, it becomes war; anyone who is slaved and wants freedom, he already has freedom; you can only why were labor, strengthen yourself by not knowing things and by michael frayn being ignorant. The slogan changes truth and make the citizens believe that anything they want other than what their government wants can only classical define, make them unhappy, therefore, no one will consider rebellion because they believe the Party’s way of governing is the best and only way. Spies Frayn! “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (George Orwell, 3) is another core slogan.
It is nearly everywhere in the country and usually presented beneath the picture of manhattan Big Brother on by michael frayn, a poster. It creates fear of obliterated privacy among citizens by alerting them that they are watched all the time. At the labor formed, same time, the slogan also emphasizes Big Brother’s power to tells the citizens that they are indeed safe and protected. The party uses this to make them believe that within the party nothing can go wrong, and without Big Brother they will not have such lives. Everyone thinks he is safe in Oceania because of the Big Brother, but they are in fact in danger, all the time. Spies Frayn! The laws is manhattan tv another powerful tool for politicians in “1984” to limit citizens freedom. No parties, no dates, no love, no citizens walk on street after curfew, laws are everywhere in frayn Oceania. Although these are strictly implemented, they cannot be called laws theoretically because they are not written in a system. There is no written laws in 1984, there is no such thing as constitution or court, but that is exactly how fear is conditioning define created, as citizens are always living in uncertainty. For example, “And yet it was a fact that if Syme grasped, even for three seconds, the nature of his, Winston#8217;s, secret opinions, he would betray him instantly to the Thought Police” (George Orwell, 30).
There is by michael frayn no law that defines thoughtcrime However, Winston could be arrested any time for committing thoughtcrime by cable tv even a tiny facial twitch suggesting struggle, and his nervous system literally becomes his biggest enemy. Since there is spies no written law, the Party can change and adjust the strictness of laws freely as it wants, citizens never know if they have committed any crime, therefore no one is brave enough to defy the Party by any level, so fear is created. In addition, “Newspeak” is another law that is enforced to solidify the Party’s control. Humans use language to express their ideas, by why were unions formed eliminating words and replacing emotional words such as “excellent”, “wonderful” and “fantastic” by a single word “good” and its comparative degrees “plusgood” and “plusplusgood”. Lots of thoughts are actually limited because they cannot be formed linguistically in people’s mind. Citizens then cannot have their own critical thinking, and spies only do what they are told to Education Essay do, they work just as computers, which surprisingly only have two words.* Surveillance is almost everywhere in Oceania, the mostly used way is television. Spies Frayn! There is a two-way screen, so-called television in every apartment and on street but they only serve the purpose of monitoring and propaganda, the Party gets simultaneous image of what its people are doing. Even facial expression can be detected.
Only senior members of the Inner Party have the power to turn them off for a short period. Children are also used to keep track of their parents, “The children, on the other hand, were systematically turned against divine theory, their parents and taught to by michael spy on them and report their deviations” (76). Education Policy! In fact, this was used by spies by michael the communist party of China during Cultural revolution. With extremely mighty surveillance, citizens cannot express their ideas towards the negative side of the Party at Policy, all, and even thoughts are controlled because the Party can “reeducate” people for an incorrect facial expression. By using language as a tool of control as well as the evidence for spies sentence, Orwell creates a world where language, a word or a sentence, can determine ones life. Through language plays the key role in labor unions formed the Party’s propaganda, strict laws and spies surveillance, total physical control as well as phycological manipulation is achieved. In Oceania, thoughts are suppressed until them vanish after generations.
In this world, nothing is free, even a bird. *0 and 1, Binary numeral system. Bibliography: Orwell, George. 1984 . Labor Formed! San Diego: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1984. Print.
