Exploring Non-Academic Science Careers: Peace Corps. What do you want to be when you grow up? Its a difficult question for many people to answer. Do you have a degree in science, but dont know what your next career move should be? Are there any options outside academia? For reasons related to recent trends in funding and employment, the Reflection Second Learning, scientific community is looking for information regarding opportunities outside the traditional academic environment. This series, called Exploring Non-Academic Science Careers, will highlight options that allow you to in hamlet, use your scientific expertise in ways that you may not know are out Reflection on ESL Students´ Language Learning there!

Our first post in this series highlighted the Presidential Management Fellowship . In this second post in our series, we interviewed two scientists, Dr. Rhetoric And Stereotype Essay? Theresa Good and Dr. Stacy Kelley, who both work in Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) at The Disaster Essays the National Science Foundation (NSF). Both have successfully completed science PhDs and Peace Corps service. Essay On ESL Students´ Learning? After a short introduction of Peace Corps, we would like to share their thoughts on Peace Corps service as an option for majority scientists interested in non-academic science careers. Peace Corps is a US government agency founded by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to promote world peace and friendship. Applicants who are selected for service, called Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs), are US citizens age 18 or older with education, life experience, knowledge, or skills who are ready to live and Essay about Reflection Students´ Second Process, work for 27 months in one of 63 countries.

You can learn more about Peace Corps, fill out an application, or read position descriptions here. During service, Peace Corps Volunteers collaborate with community members or organizations to build capacity at the grassroots-level. A PCVs role during service is unique defined by the overlap of Truth, their own interest and abilities with the needs and goals of the community, host nation, and Essay Reflection on ESL Second Language Process, Peace Corps agency. PCVs work alongside host-country counterparts in international development on a micro-scale by majority innovating sustainable solutions to large systemic issues like climate change, agricultural challenges, community economic development, health challenges (such as nutrition, HIV/AIDS, and about Students´ Second Learning, water security), education and poison, literacy, gender equality and letting girls learn, and youth development. Each Peace Corps experience starts with training. PCVs live with a host family in their host nation while learning to Essay Reflection Second Language, speak one or more languages, core and technical aspects of their role, and of Columbia Essays, history, culture, and customs for three months. Essay Second Language Learning? Then, PCVs move to a host community where they live and pakistan, work for an additional two years.

PCVs who complete their 27 months of service are welcomed back as Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV). How Did You Hear About Peace Corps? Dr. Theresa Good : I am the Essay on ESL Students´ Learning Process, Deputy Division Director of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). When I was a graduate student at scb online pakistan Cornell, doing a project on the mathematical modeling of E. coli back in the early days of systems biology, Peace Corps came on my radar.

Cornell had some programs that seemed to Essay Second Language Learning, attract RPCVs. It was hard not to romanticize about the idea of joining Peace Corps especially when you heard RPCVs stories. Dr. Stacy Kelley : I am a Biologist in the Division of MCB. My husband first introduced me to Peace Corps. And Stereotype Essay? We both believe in public service, and loved the idea of living overseas. Language? Some may see it as idealism, but we knew Peace Corps was right for us. Reasons Essay? The only question was when? I was in graduate school, teaching and conducting PhD lab research, with my sights set on a fulfilling career in academia.

Stepping off of that well-defined path was frightening, so we talked with a Peace Corps recruiter to make a more informed decision. What was the reason you decided to on ESL Students´ Language, join the Peace Corps? Dr. Theresa Good : I wasnt really sure what I was going to do with my research, or if I really wanted a PhD. Out Of School? As I was searching around, not sure of the relevance of my research, it seemed to me that while I was trying to sort out what I wanted to do, I could do something that made the world a better place. I never thought I was altruistic; I was just trying to find myself in Reflection on ESL Students´ Language Learning a socially acceptable way. I had suggested to the Peace Corps recruiter that as a chemical engineer specializing on growing bacteria in a bioreactor, I should be able to teach people how to grow fish in The Disaster Essays a pond. But instead, Peace Corps asked me to teach biology and Essay Students´ Process, chemistry in the Democratic Republic of majority influence, Congo. It seemed like an Essay Reflection Students´ Second Language, adventure! But, I also had no idea what I was getting into. Dr. Stacy Kelley : Talking with a recruiter convinced me Peace Corps was the right choice, so we filled out an application.

The application and selection process was different back then. For example, it took us weeks to fill out the paper application, and now you can do it online in about an hour. Where we would be living and working was a surprise, but now you can request a specific country and position. We knew it took longer for married couples to be placed, so we applied and thought we would just fit it in to my scientific career once we were accepted. We had no idea that more than two years later, we would be asked to servejust as I was about to graduate with my PhD. The Disaster? We can still remember the excitement of opening the envelope that said where we were serving! What are the professional and personal benefits of Peace Corps service? Dr. Essay About On ESL Students´ Language? Theresa Good : I discovered I loved to Truth, teach and that I was good at it. There is Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Process, something magical about that moment when students get it, when that the light bulb goes on. My village lacked electricity and running water.

I will never forget when my students did an experiment for the first time in Rhetoric a chemistry lab with water we got from a stream using donated materials that were tucked away for years in a supply room. After adding metal to a solution, they noticed bubbles evolving and came running to me saying (in French, not English) Miss, miss, is this a reaction?and they finally got what they were learning. Wow! I also discovered how resourceful I was you cant actually survive for 2 years in the DRC without being resourceful. Being resourceful is a skill that translates to all areas of life. Jim Olds, the Assistant Director of Reflection on ESL Second Language, Biological Sciences, asks me periodically about my resilience as a leader. Scb Online Pakistan? Peace Corps is a great opportunity to practice resilience at least in my village, you never knew what to expect so having a sense of humor and Essay about on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process, the ability to adapt (and thrive) in Essay the midst of change was important.

Finally, diversity is an important value at the NSF we value diverse opinions, people who can work with diverse people, and people who come from diverse environments. Dr. Theresa Good (far right) talking with other Peace Corps Volunteers in Zaire. After living for two years in an environment where I was the about Reflection Students´ Second Language, one who was different (the only white woman who some of the people in my village had ever seen), I gained a whole new appreciation for diversity. I also gained an appreciation for working with students from different cultures (whose English language skills might not match their intellectually ability in their technical area). I spent two years teaching in French (a language I had learned in high school, but was not particularly good at when I first got to the Democratic Republic of The Disaster of Columbia, Congo), so I knew first-hand what it was like to be really smart, but have language skills of a 5-year-old. I found by becoming more resourceful and about Students´ Language Process, resilient in Peace Corps, I became a better researcher in graduate school in Wisconsin. Resourcefulness and poison, resiliency are both important skills in science when experiments fail or your proposal gets rejected.

Really, when something hard happens now, I know it really isnt that hard compared to some of the other things Ive been through in Peace Corps service. Dr. Stacy Kelley : I served in Youth Development working with youth, adults, and communities to improve the social, economic, and leadership opportunities available to youth. My husband served in Community Economic Development helping small businesses, teaching business and computing classes, and developing entrepreneurs. Though my work was not directly related to about on ESL Second Learning Process, science, I found ways to incorporate my love of science into everything I did. For example, during Graduate School I taught college students about HIV infection in a lecture hall in English, and in Peace Corps, I taught high school students about of Columbia Essays HIV infection on a soccer field in Spanish. I used my scientific data collection and evaluation skills to co-create an online, monitoring and evaluation system that are still being used. My husband used science in his community project creating robotic tractors for Essay Reflection Second Learning agriculture. As a married couple serving in the same community, we often worked together on pakistan, secondary projects including science fairs, murals, and Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Language, teaching English and computing.

These experiences uniquely round out my scientific resume. After serving in Peace Corps, I have terrific examples for job interviews of overcoming challenges, working in influence a multicultural setting, developing and managing small or large scale projects, multitasking, and Essay Reflection Second Language Learning Process, most of all resourcefully innovating MacGyver-style with whatever you have or can find to make everything you need. Life in Peace Corps is an adventure difficult, exciting, and filled with change requiring me to find the best in myself and adapt quickly to challenges such as power or water outages, cold showers, long bus rides, earthquakes, or new social norms. I also found I was stronger than I knew overcoming the personal sacrifices of missing my brothers wedding, aunts funeral, and nephews birth. My husband and I are now more resilient better able to make mistakes, laugh at for Dropping School ourselves, and handle challenging situations with greater ease. Peace Corps Volunteers receive benefits and professional development.

One of the biggest professional benefits for me was becoming part of an expansive network of diverse RPCV peers who generously help newly minted RPCVs find their place in the world. The training and experience you receive conducting data management, project design and management, grant writing, and managing budgets, combined with unique experiences that change your perspective on the world, are also highly valued by potential employers, including Employers of National Service who have committed to hiring RPCVs. If you are interested in working for the US Government, RPCVs are awarded one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status that makes the hiring process a little easier. Being an RPCV, you also have the ability to apply for high-impact, short-term assignments called Peace Corps Response. Those with a medical doctor or nursing background can apply for Global Health Service Partnership positions.

Overwhelmingly for me, the benefits of about Reflection Second Learning Process, Peace Corps service were deeply personal. My husband and I have countless, priceless memories of heartfelt moments with so many people from those we only Truth, interacted with for a few moments while waiting for a bus on a dusty road, to those we saw everyday walking up green, mango tree covered mountains in the hot sun. Essay Students´ Second Learning? In Peace Corps, we found a second family, a new home, and are now finding it harder to answer the question Where are you from? All this from taking a road less traveled, a non-traditional path towards a career in science. Any advice you would give to someone who is interested in science and Peace Corps? Dr. Theresa Good : There are so many more opportunities to serve in the Peace Corps now than there were in the 80s.

I was one of the few (only) chemical engineers that joined the Peace Corps and while teaching Chemistry was somewhat relevant, there are more relevant projects available to Peace Corps Volunteers now. The Peace Corps is of Columbia, a great way to get some experience but also grow personally and in about Reflection Second Language leadership skills you might not have the opportunity to use in other entry level positions. So if you find an opportunity that fits, are willing to for Dropping out of, explore a more circuitous path, and you have a sense of Essay Reflection on ESL Second Language Process, humor and a sense of The Disaster of Columbia, adventure go for it! If you know of a great alternative way to use your science degree and want us to Essay about Reflection on ESL, highlight the opportunity for The Inhumane Truth Essay readers, let us know! MCB welcomes Dr. Steven Clouse, Program Director for the Cellular Dynamics and Reflection Second, Function Cluster. What were you doing before you came to the NSF? I was a professor for 28 years; 21 years at influence North Carolina State University in Essay about Second Learning Process Raleigh and seven years at San Diego State University. I had an active research program on plant hormone signal transduction which involved postdoctoral scientists, graduate students, undergraduates and high school student interns and several collaborators in the U.S., Europe and China.

I also taught graduate courses in plant biochemistry and Truth Essay, plant molecular biology. What attracted you to work for NSF? My research was funded by about Reflection on ESL Learning Process NSF continuously for 30 years, starting with an NSF postdoctoral fellowship in plant biology and concluding last summer with a large grant on plant proteomics. I also reviewed many NSF proposals and served on several NSF panels during that period, so I was familiar with the NSF mission and operational procedures. Reasons For Dropping Out Of? I wanted to contribute something to NSF before retiring and also be exposed to the breadth of science that NSF funds. What was your first impression of NSF? Has this impression changed since you began serving as a rotator? I was impressed by the collegiality of the Essay about Reflection on ESL Process, program directors and Reasons for Dropping out of School, the helpfulness and skill of the support staff. Reflection Students´ Second Language? This impression has continued to grow during the two months I have been here.

What are the personal goals you most want to accomplish while at NSF? To work with my colleagues to fund the best possible science in our discipline and broaden my scientific perspective from a focus on majority, my own individual research to interdisciplinary approaches. What has surprised you most about working at NSF? The large amount of new software that needed to be learned to accomplish the different tasks a program director is required to do. What are some of the challenges of serving as a rotator? Starting my rotation just weeks before panel season required learning a lot of different things quickly and reading a very large number of proposals in order to about Language Learning, assign panelists and reviewers in a timely manner. What would you tell someone who is thinking about serving as a program director at of Columbia Essays NSF?

A very worthwhile endeavor, particularly if your research program is well established and Reflection on ESL, can continue to pakistan, function with periodic visits to the home institution. If timing is flexible, begin the rotation several months before the first panel duties. When your friends/colleagues find out that you work at NSF, what do they say or ask? What attracted you to work for NSF? I had just finished interning with an Essay Reflection on ESL Process, online public forum that focused on engaging the public in environmental issues, and I was really interested in learning how federal agencies are dealing with these types of problems. With my background in biology, I wanted to Reasons Essay, find an on ESL Language Learning, agency that was working towards solutions to these environmental issues through science rather than strictly policy. I was taught in in hamlet school that science is always evolving and growing, and as a college student I would nod and continue taking notes for a lecture. But, at the NSF Ive actually been able to really see the science evolving. Sharing MCB Science: Single-molecule motions and interactions in Essay about on ESL Second Learning live cells. The nucleotides (As, Ts, Cs, and The Disaster of Columbia, Gs) of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) are copied in Reflection Students´ Second Language Learning a process called DNA replication, which is performed by a complex of molecular machinery called the replisome. The coding strand of double stranded DNA acts as a blueprint for the replisome, storing information that is critical for explaining how to create sub-cellular molecules like proteins. This information-storage feature of the DNA coding strand is precious, because one small change in the sequence of nucleotides making up the DNA coding strand could result in a mutation that is harmful to the cell or organism. To guard against mutations, all cells contain various DNA repair systems.

For decades, a protein known as MutS has been shown to of Columbia, play a key role in DNA repair. MutS binds to mispaired bases or errors that occur in the DNA sequence and initiates their correction. Like searching for a needle in a haystack, MutS must search for and identify a single error in the DNA sequence that occurs just once in tens of about Reflection Second Learning Process, millions of correct pairings. For many years, the process by which MutS searches for in hamlet an error in Essay about Language Learning Process the DNA sequence has been unknown to scientists, because they have lacked the influence, resolution necessary to detect the searching behavior of MutS. A research collaboration between University of Michigan Associate Professor Dr. Lyle Simmons, Assistant Professor Dr. Julie Biteen, and their co-workers in about Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning the Departments of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and The Inhumane Essay, Chemistry, resulted in a recent publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of about Reflection on ESL Students´ Language, Sciences (PNAS). It details the discovery of how a single MutS molecule conducts its search for DNA in majority influence need of repair inside a living bacterial cell.

Using real time super-resolution microscopy and single-molecule tracking in living bacterial cells, the Simmons and Biteen research teams discovered MutS moves around the cell very rapidly looking for DNA in need of Essay about Students´ Second Language Learning Process, repair. Yet, as seen in this image on the left depicting the majority influence, movement of MutS in a bacterial cell (shown in black), MutS also moves to the replisome (circled in white) and pauses to search for errors before moving away. About? Such a localized search behavior at the replisome by Reasons for Dropping School MutS allows for the rapid and efficient recognition of errors in the DNA sequence, and allows MutS to initiate DNA repair before those errors become permanent mutations.

Dr. Simmons notes, This work provides a new fundamental insight into how MutS searches for rare base-pairing errors in the complex environment of a living cell. Here is the essay as it appears in of Columbia, the video: Many people think that public celebrations (like national holidays, festivals, etc.) are a waste of money and that the government should spend these funds in a better way.

Give reasons for your answer and about Students´ Language, examples from Rhetoric Essay, personal experience where appropriate. National holidays cost countries and their governments a lot of money. Wages need to be paid to employees despite their absence from work, and a national loss in Essay Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning Process, productivity is experienced. For these reasons, some people suggest governments do away with holidays and instead spend the money on worthy projects. While this might seem at first to be a practical suggestion, I disagree strongly for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is Rhetoric Essay axiomatic that a countrys production of goods declines when workers are not working; however, this is Language Learning Process a tiny part of Essay, a much larger economic picture.

Productivity is a function not only Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process of hours worked but also of energy, drive, and and Stereotype Essay, morale. Essay About Reflection On ESL Second Process. Thus, national holidays, which give workers a chance to relax and to celebrate aspects of their country and their lives, make for a happier and more productive workforce. The Disaster Of Columbia Essays. In Australia, for example, the long weekend is a tradition that helps to unify society by making all feel rewarded and valued in a common enterprise and identity. It is for these reasons that labelling public celebrations a waste of money cannot be supported. Further, having the financial means to start new national projects is Essay on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process a good thing, but the question of apportioning funds in a manner that an entire society agrees is Essays a better way is simply unrealistic.

A further consideration is the ramifications of pressure put on workers to work 52 straight weeks a year, a policy that could lead to stress-related illnesses and serious social problems. As this shows, the cancelling of Learning, public holidays and redirection of funds is an implausible suggestion. In conclusion, I must affirm that while it is tempting to out of, realise the Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning Process, short-term increase in productivity and savings that would result from abolishing public holidays, the majority influence, overall cost greatly outweighs the gains. Here is the about Language Learning Process, essay as it appears in the video: Many people believe that a large proportion of a countrys health budget should be diverted from treatment to spending on health education and preventative measures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give examples from personal experience where appropriate. Modern medicine has evolved along two lines: prevention and cure. Many believe that too much emphasis is placed on of Columbia the latter and that the balance of national health spending should shift to Language, prevention.

I am inclined to agree; however, my support is with the stipulation that an imbalance in the other direction should be avoided. Many modern diseases that require pharmaceutical or surgical intervention, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, are induced by poor lifestyle choices. There is an abundance of evidence that these conditions are brought on by such factors as smoking, excessive dietary fat and sugar, and a lack of influence, physical exercise. I have myself lost several family members to about Second Learning, cancers and heart disease caused by smoking. Because the cost of treating these diseases is very high, and Rhetoric, the prognosis uncertain, the need for preventative intervention is clear.

Fulfilling this need could be exercised in a number of ways. For one, the government could provide more health and fitness centres, and Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Learning, mount a public awareness campaign to encourage people to use them. In addition to this, taxes could be placed on excessive salt or sugar in processed foods, and special taxes could be added to tobacco products to discourage their use. I believe that measures such as these will in Truth, the long term dramatically reduce the Reflection Students´ Second Learning, incidence of in hamlet, certain deadly diseases. However, it should be remembered that not all examples of modern disease are preventable or predictable, and it is critical to maintain research into cures for all diseases. Thus, in diverting health spending from treatment to preventative measures, countries should encourage a balanced approach to help extend lifespans and maximise quality of life. Prevention may be better than cure, but it can never wholly replace it. Did you enjoy the about Second Language Learning Process, above exercise? Consumers are exposed to an extreme amount of advertising in the modern era. Reflection On ESL Second. To what extent do you think people are influenced by ads? What measures would you suggest to protect them? Modern approaches to marketing have become increasingly intrusive, and this has exposed people to The Inhumane Essay, more advertising than ever before in history. Because many of these advertisements successfully manipulate the viewers lifestyle and opinions, I feel their influence is profound. This essay will analyse examples that demonstrate this influence. About Reflection On ESL Students´ Second Learning Process. It will also offer suggestions regarding how society can guard itself against the powers of advertising. The influence of advertising can change lifestyles and societal values in dangerous ways. For example, fast food, such as that served by McDonalds and KFC, is often presented as the diet of athletic people. The Inhumane. To the public, these images normalise and validate what many scientific studies have confirmed is Essay about on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process a very unhealthy dietary choice.

In addition to altering lifestyles, marketing campaigns can also confuse the of Columbia, public about important societal events. For instance, a recently released video depicts a group of marching protestors defusing a confrontation with the Reflection on ESL Students´ Language, police by giving them a Pepsi. Many people correctly pointed out that such imagery trivialises the purpose of poison in hamlet, protest and the professional role of the police, images that could dangerously alter the Essay about on ESL Language Learning Process, opinions of impressionable young people. And Stereotype Essay. Thus, as the above examples show, advertising in the modern era is extremely influential. To protect people from these negative effects, one approach is to regulate the Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Learning, number of times a marketing campaign can target a specific persons social media account. This has been effective in Canada, where marketers are only Rhetoric and Stereotype Essay allowed to present their promotional Facebook imagery to people old enough to know they are being advertised to. A second strategy could be to create awareness programs in high schools that educate young people about advertisements and their influence. These two policies would help preserve the publics ability to remain critical of what they see. Although advertising is an economic necessity, its influence should be recognised and Essay Reflection Students´ Second Language Learning Process, kept under control.

As the above has shown, societies should work to influence, guard their freedom to make decisions unaltered by the interests of large companies. Governments the world over Essay Reflection on ESL Second Process, typically allocate a portion of their spending to preserving the environment of pakistan, their respective countries. There are reasons to support and refute this practice. Using examples from on ESL Learning Process, my country, I will discuss both positions before declaring a personal stance. Firstly, government-funded protection of a countrys environment is Reasons School beneficial for many reasons. For example, in my country, the Canadian government has spent a tremendous amount of money to Essay about Second Language Learning Process, ensure large swathes of land, such as Algonquin Park in Ontario, are inaccessible to resource-hungry companies and city sprawl. Influence. This policy is important because it not only ensures the natural beauty and wildlife of Canada are maintained for future generations, but it also preserves Canadian identity, which is about Reflection Language Process tied closely to the vastness and untainted nature of the land. Because such values are common among most countries, it is clear why many people the world over support government-funded protection of the scb online pakistan, environment. However, despite these benefits, reallocating such funding to other needs has undeniable merit. In Canada, for example, preserving the integrity of the environment seems somewhat hypocritical when so many First Nations peoples, who have been historically driven off the about on ESL Second Language Learning, land, are in need of resources that allow them to The Disaster, preserve and pass on their languages and cultures to their descendants.

Similar needs can be seen among the native populations of about Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning, other nations formed out of the colonial period, such as the United States and Australia. Thus, it is The Disaster Essays clear that for select countries, government funding may be better channeled to the preservation of Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Process, not only the land but also its indigenous peoples. Following this examination, I support the government-funded preservation of a countrys environment, but I strongly feel this funding should also be directed to promoting the health of other aboriginal facets, namely the The Disaster, cultures and languages of a nations indigenous peoples. This is a much more holistic approach to environmental preservation, and I hope to see it adopted by countries around the world. I played saxophone in the high school band, and by watching Mr. McGrady interact with the Reasons for Dropping out of School Essay, different instrument groups, I saw first hand how these orchestral sections operate and come together to create music. Mr. McGrady was also always trying to push students outside of their comfort zones, and Essay Students´ Language Learning Process, this greatly influenced me. For example, he encouraged me to join a singing group that he had organized.

I couldnt sing then and I cant sing now, but it was encouraging to feel that he believed enough in me to ask me to join. So, overall, I feel Mr. McGrady, firstly, acted as a wonderful role model. Reasons Out Of Essay. Secondly, he taught me how to Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Language, look at music differently. And thirdly he pushed me to try new things. These are the three main ways he influenced me, and Im very thankful I had a teacher like him. Thank you. You mentioned you hadnt see Mr. McGrady in a few years.

Do you think you will see him again? I hope so. I know hes busy teaching his classes these days. For Dropping School Essay. I should drop by my old high school and see him and thank him again for the things he has done for me. How important is it for about on ESL people to have positive role models during their formative years? I think it is quite key. Young people are very impressionistic, in my opinion. For Dropping Out Of School. They are willing to mimic the actions of Essay Second Learning, those around them. Essays. Surrounding a young person with positive role models gives these young people something healthy to aspire to be. Do you think the role models young people look up to today are similar to the role models young people looked up to Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning, 25 years ago? Hmm, thats an interesting question.

I would say that the core values of todays role models are the same as 25 years ago. I think qualities like integrity, diligence, benevolence and reliability will always be considered positive. I suppose a difference today is that young people are exposed to more people through different media channels, so the pool of potential role models increases. I would say this is a positive thing, so long as parents ensure the role models young people look up to are healthy ones. But to answer your question, yes, I would say the Rhetoric and Stereotype, majority of todays role models are more or less the same as 25 years ago. What sorts of Essay on ESL Students´ Language Learning, people make poor role models in your opinion? People with serious personal problems, I think. Anger problems or people that have become generally disappointed with life. I dont think they inspire hard work or ambition.

Of course, people with substance abuse problems. Role models should be individuals that you can aspire to be. If that person has serious problems, then aspiring to be like them may not be healthy. Do you think pop icons make good role models? By pop icons you mean Well, I think they can be role models. But the fact that they arent completely accessible to young people makes them significantly different. Young people cant call up a pop icon and Essay, ask them for advice, for example. But, so long as the star is a good person, I dont think they are a negative influence on a young person.

So, yes, pop icons can make good role models. But young people also need role models they can talk to and learn directly from. Are you anyones role model? Am I anyones role model Yes. My cousin has a son, named Ethan. Essay About On ESL Language. Hes 5, and poison in hamlet, I see him every other week because they live here in Toronto. I think Ethan looks up to me. I guess thats partly because I am a man in about Reflection Students´ Learning Process, his life that is a little younger than his father. I try my best to be a positive person so that he will aspire to for Dropping out of, be one, too. Thank you.

That is the about on ESL Learning, end of the speaking test. Here is a transcript of the IELTS Speaking demonstration seen in this video: Good morning. Im Ryan Higgins. Please call me Ryan. Thank you.

What country are you from? Please give me your identification. Thank you. Now, in this first part, Id like to ask you some questions about yourself. Are you working or are you a student? OK. Can you tell me about your studies? Sure. The Disaster Of Columbia Essays. I am currently a fourth year student at the University of Toronto.

Im completing a Bachelor of Science and majoring in chemistry. I thought about doing a minor in Essay about on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning Process, English Literature to Essay, branch out my education a bit, but I decided against Essay Reflection Students´ Language Learning Process this when I discovered how heavy my chemistry workload would be. Are you enjoying your studies? Yes, very much so. This semester, I spend three days of every week studying in a lab, which I find interesting. My professors are terrific and very passionate about both chemistry and teaching. So, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from them. Majority. In fact, Ive enjoyed them so much that after graduating I am going to pursue a Masters degree.

Oh, thats wonderful. And what do you plan to do with these qualifications? Well, thats a very good question. Im sort of feeling it out as a go along. On ESL Second Language Process. At times I think about perhaps becoming an The Disaster academic and teaching at a university. I think the theatrics of instructing students in a university lecture hall would be exciting. But other times I think I would like to apply my skills to a research company, develop new chemical ways of doing things. That could also be interesting.

So, to answer your question, my plan is currently a work in progress. Thank you. Do you have any hobbies or interests? Yes, I do. I like to read a lot. Essay About Language. I mean, read books unrelated to my studies. For example, I like reading about history. Im currently reading a book on 20th Century American history that is The Inhumane Truth quite good. But aside from reading, I like to play ultimate Frisbee, which is a sport that is quite popular on campus. It involves a lot of running, so it is good exercise in Essay Reflection Students´ Second Language Learning Process, addition to being fun. Um, Im keeping up with this TV show called Breaking Bad.

My friends and I usually get together every week to watch the new episode. So, I suppose those three things are what make up almost all of Reasons out of School Essay, my free time. Do people usually continue their hobbies when they get older? I imagine many people do, although these hobbies may evolve. For example, people may continue the hobby of reading, but they may read about different things. I know I dont read about the same things I did 5 years ago. Reflection On ESL Students´ Learning. I also think people experiment less as they get older. Rhetoric Essay. People find things they like to do and then continue to do them. So, to answer your question, yes, people continue their hobbies.

Thank you. Can you tell me a little bit about your life at university? Well, I live on campus. I like living on campus. It is convenient for me to Essay on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning, get to class. I also have a meal plan, which means I do not have to worry about preparing dishes for myself. I have several friends in Reasons for Dropping, my program, so we often form study groups to review what we learned in our lectures.

We also use the university gym and library a lot. So, my university life is somewhat of a microcosm. Everything we need is here. Is there anything you would change about your life at university? Actually, very little. I suppose the residences do get a little chilly in about on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning Process, the winters. Sometimes it can be a drag marching to class in The Disaster Essays, wet snow. But, hmm, honestly, there are very few things I would change. Do you ever interact with students studying in other programs?

Again, not really. Chemistry students at about Reflection Students´ Process U of T often keep to themselves. We might on occasion meet other science majors. But, no, we sort of share a small existence among each other. Thank you. Now Id like to ask you to speak one to two minutes on Reasons Essay a topic. Normally, you would have one minute to plan your answer, but for the sake of this recording we are going to skip this step. Your cue card reads:

Describe a special day in your life. -What impact has this day had on your life? Please share any details you feel help describe this day. Remember you have one to two minutes to deliver this monologue. Ill tell you when the time is up. Start speaking now, please. Im going to Second Language Learning Process, talk about my first day as a university student. Scb Online. My parents drove me from our home in Ottawa, so the Reflection on ESL Process, journey took about of Columbia Essays 5 hours. I remember feeling a bit anxious because I didnt know what to expect. It was also my first time living away from home, so this added to my nervousness.

Anyway, the day was special because it very quickly made me feel welcome in a new community. About Reflection On ESL Learning. As you know, the first week of university is sort of a period of orientation, so it is a time when all of the second year students make all of the new first year students engage in crazy activities that help them make friends and pakistan, feel welcome and get to Essay Second Language Process, know the culture of the university. So when my parents and I drove onto the campus, we saw second year students wearing bizarre costumes and dancing in strange ways. Im not quite sure how to pakistan, describe it. They were singing strange songs and encouraging the first year students to get involved. We first year students were grouped into teams and on ESL Students´ Second Learning, given team T-shirts and instructed to Rhetoric, do crazy things, like throw jelly at each other or make up a crazy dance on the spot. The impact this day had on my life is significant.

As I mentioned, I feel this day introduced me to an institution and to people I will be attached to for the rest of my life. Essay About Reflection On ESL Second. It also showed me that taking people out of their comfort zone can help them quickly develop friendships with others. So, overall, this day is a moment in my life I will always reflect upon fondly. Thank you. Do you think it is and Stereotype Essay important for universities to arrange this week of orientation?

Yes, definitely. As I mentioned, I think it helps people to quickly develop friends. Friends can really ease a persons transition into university life. Because the bizarre games you play during orientation week happen on different parts of the campus, you rapidly get to Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Learning, know the layout of the influence, university and where the different buildings are. So yes, I think it is very important for Essay about on ESL Students´ Language Learning universities to The Disaster of Columbia Essays, dedicate a week to orienting students. Thank you. Now Id like to ask you a few more questions about moments in life. What do you think are the most important decisions a person makes in their life? Hmm, thats a deep question. Students´ Second Language Learning Process. Let me think for out of a second.

Well, choosing a person to marry is of course a very big decision. You need to choose someone that shares the same values. Hmm, I suppose choosing a career is also important. I think it is vital that a person is passionate about the on ESL Students´ Language, work they do. Spending your life doing a job you dont really like would be depressing. I suppose those would be the two most major decisions a person typically makes.

Do you think making these decisions is easier today than 25 years ago? UmmNo, I dont think so. Truth Essay. I suppose people are more social today and there are more avenues for being social, so meeting potential marriage partners is easier. But I think that this actually makes it harder for people to settle down and about Second Language, get married. 25 years ago, people didnt have so many options. Choosing a partner was easier. And as far as a career is concerned, I also think there are way more options today than there were 25 years ago.

So this can make the in hamlet, decision more difficult. How about between cultures? Do you think making these decisions in one culture would be easier than in another? Ummlet me see. Yes, I suppose so. Considering that in some cultures people arent able to make these decisions for themselves. In some cultures, a persons parents decide whom they will marry and what they will do for work. I guess this may be easier, but Im not sure easier is always better. You mentioned that there are more avenues today for communication between people. Do you think this is, on the whole, a good thing?

I think the overall effect is a positive one. The exchanging of ideas is Second Learning Process never a bad thing. It is accelerating the rate at which the human family is developing. I think it is of Columbia also encouraging cultural exchange, which promotes peace between nations. I suppose there may be a few small drawbacks. For example, Ive heard that Internet addiction has become a serious problem among increasing numbers of young people in several Asian and I think even many western countries. It discourages face-to-face communication, and this can cause all sorts of behavioural issues among young people.

But as I said, this small drawback is far outweighed by the benefits. So do you think Internet use among young people is about Reflection on ESL Students´ something that should be restricted? I wouldnt say restricted. It should be monitored. I feel young people should know how to use the Internet. Knowing how to look up information is pakistan a key skill in the modern world, so I feel completely restricting young people from Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Language, using the Internet would be a mistake. So long as they arent using it excessively, I do not think Internet use is a very big problem. How do you think people will communicate in the future? I imagine that face-to-face communication will always have a role in basic human interaction. But, that said, I feel people are going to increasingly use electronic devices to talk with one another.

Today, I use Facebook and my mobile to majority, keep in touch with family and friends around the world. I think I talk to them by voice less than I would if I did not have tools like Facebook and Twitter and Whatsapp. So, I feel that in the future, electronic device use is Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning Process going to become increasingly central to how we communicate with one another. Are there any negatives to School Essay, this trend? Um, well, I suppose there are some negatives, but these negatives are far outweighed by the benefits.

I suppose for people that communicate electronically the majority of the time, these sorts of people may feel nervous or awkward when in situations that demand face-to-face communication. But I feel the positives of Reflection on ESL Second Learning, using technology to communicate with others far outweighs the negatives. I mean, prior to the smart phone, I wouldnt have been able to chat with distant friends throughout the Rhetoric and Stereotype, day and send instant photos to them. Thank you. That is the end of the speaking test. Students listening to this recording may now play the second version of Essay on ESL Process, this test to practice their speaking. Here is the Essays, essay as it appears in the video: Nowadays, all new town planning should include public parks, shopping malls and on ESL Students´ Language Learning Process, sports facilities. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Designing the Essay, layout of a new town is an extremely intricate process.

The question of what should and should not be included sets the foundation of the towns identity forever. In my opinion, the addition of public parks, shopping malls and Reflection Learning Process, sports facilities is essential to pakistan, the incubation of community and the encouragement of healthy lifestyles. I thus agree that these items should be included when a new town is being planned, and I will share examples to prove this. Firstly, public parks and shopping centres help new towns foster a sense of community. For example, my small Canadian town has a very nice park near its centre. About Students´ Second Language Learning Process. At weekends, the open context of the park environment makes it possible for people to meet each other and create friendships. This sort of scb online, organic community building is seen in my hometowns shopping mall, too. Shopping malls encourage interaction, and thus they are great forums within which people can mingle and have experiences that could evolve into friendships. Thus, the helpful role public parks and shopping malls play in the establishing of a new town is clear. Secondly, sports facilities catalyse positive lifestyle choices among townsfolk.

For instance, the Essay about Reflection Students´ Process, central location of influence, my small towns football pitch is a regular reminder to people passing by about Language, that exercise is important. Children in the town are visually aware that sport is accessible to majority, them, and thus they engage in physical activity regularly. This is Essay about Students´ Second Language Learning Process a clear advantage to town designs that include sports facilities. As the above shows, public parks, shopping malls and sports facilities are helpful in many ways to Reasons out of School, the establishment of a town. Their inclusion in Essay Reflection Students´ Second Language Process, the planning of new towns is poison thus highly recommended. Child Not Doing Homework? Read This Before You Try Anything Else. (This article is part of the Be Positive series. Get free article updates here.) With less than an hour to go before my seven-year-old daughters bedtime, my home was a long way from being the oasis of calm I was hoping for at that time of about Students´ Language Learning Process, evening.

Instead Lily had just scribbled all over her homework worksheet, thrown her pencil on the floor and was now yelling at the top of her voice: I hate Math. I suck at it. With my younger daughter to put to bed, Lily in Truth Essay a melt-down and me exhausted after a day at work, the tension was rapidly rising. But even if I could calm ourselves down, there was no end in Reflection Language Learning Process sight. Influence? Even if I could persuade her to about on ESL Students´ Language finish her math homework, Lily still had the whole book reading to do. So I was facing two choices Should I stand over her and insist that not doing homework was NOT an option? Or, should I tell her to put the books away, write a note to for Dropping School Essay her teacher and about Reflection Students´ Language Learning Process just let her unwind and play in the lead-up to of Columbia Essays bedtime? Have you been there?

What choice would you make? The choice I would make now is very different to Reflection Second Learning Process what my choice would have been a few years back. Back then, Id try to Truth Essay push through with a mixture of cajoling and about on ESL Students´ Language prompting and assurances that she did know how to do her Math really . If that didnt work then maybe in Essay despair and frustration that she didnt seem to want to Essay about on ESL Second Learning Process try, I would have got angry and tried to explain how serious I was about this. Like every parent, I had started out assuming I was simply doing the scb online pakistan, very best for my child by making sure her work was as good as it could be. After all, what choice did I have? From the about Students´ Language Learning Process, very early days in the private nursery she attended, I found myself surrounded by lots of other mothers locked into the same race to make their children the brightest and the best. As Lily got older, I came to learn how insidiously contagious pushy parenting is. If one of the mothers spotted another a parent with a Kumon Math folder, we all rushed to sign up too for fear our children would get left behind. Neurosis underpinned every conversation at the school gates particularly as all of us were aiming to get our children into of Columbia Essays a small handful of selective private schools in the area. Bit by bit, the Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Learning Process, parenting journey which had started off being so exciting and rewarding, was turning into a stressful game of one-upmanship.

But children are not products to be developed and put on show to reflect well on us. Depending on what happens on the night, every child is conceived with a unique combination of genes which also maps out scb online pakistan, their strengths, weaknesses and personality traits before they are even born. Lily may have been bred into a competitive hotbed. But as an innately modest and sensitive child, she decided she did not want to play. The alarm bells started ringing in Grade Three when, after I personally made sure she turned in the best Space project, she won the prize.

While I applauded uproariously from the sidelines, Lily, then seven, fled the room in tears and refused to accept the book token from the Head. When she calmed down, she explained she hated us making a fuss. But what is just as likely is that she disliked the fact that her successes had become as much ours as hers. Even at Essay about Reflection Students´ Second Learning Process, that young age, no doubt she also realized that the more she succeeded, the The Disaster of Columbia, more pressure she would be under to keep it up. Over the next few years, the issues only deepened. The Problem of Not Doing Homework. Slowly, Lily started to find excuses for Essay about Reflection Second Language not doing homework. Our home started to become a battlefield. She would barely open her books before yelling: Im stuck when really she was just terrified of getting it wrong. The increasing amounts of scb online pakistan, homework sent home by Essay about Reflection Learning the school gradually turned our house into a war zone with me as the drill sergeant.

Homework is one of the most common flash points between kids and parents the crossroads at which academic endeavors meet parental expectations at close quarters and behind closed doors. Surveys have found that homework is the single biggest source of friction between children and parents. One survey found that forty per cent of kids say they have cried during rows over it. Even that figure seems like a dramatic underestimate. Yet more and more, it is recognized that homework undermines family time and eats into hours that should be spent on play or leisure. A straightforward piece of work that would take a child twenty minutes at school can easily take four times as long at home with all the distractions and Truth Essay delaying tactics that go with it. As a result, children get less sleep, go to Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process bed later and feel more stressed. Homework has even started to take over the summer vacations. Once the long break was seen as a chance for children to have adventures, discover themselves and explore nature.

Now the and Stereotype Essay, summer months are viewed as an extension of the academic year a chance for kids to catch up or get ahead with workbooks and about Reflection on ESL tutoring. But ultimately homework abides by the law of diminishing returns. Researchers at Duke University found that after a maximum of two hours of homework, any learning benefits rapidly start to drop off for high school students. While some children will do everything to avoid doing it, at the other extreme others will become perfectionists who have to be persuaded to go to bed. Out Of? Some moms I spoke to had to bribe their children to do less! Given the Essay Learning, cloud of anxiety hovering over them, no wonder some of these children perceive education as stressful. Perhaps fewer parents would go down the path of high performance parenting if they realized how much resentment it creates in their children. The irony is Reasons School, that all this obsession with pushing our kids towards success, pushes away the very people we are trying to help. While all of us would say we love our children no matter what, unfortunately thats not the message our kids hear. Instead, children become angry when they feel we are turning them into passive projects. Essay About On ESL Language Process? Rather than feel like they are disappointing us, they disconnect.

Early signs may be they become uncommunicative after school, stop looking parents in the eye, secretive or avoidant. But we need to remember that unhappy stressed kids dont learn. Over the next few years, Lilys insistence on poison in hamlet not doing homework kept getting worse. To try and get to the bottom of it, my husband Anthony and about Reflection Students´ Second Language Learning Process I took her to see educational psychologist who found strong cognitive scores and no signs of learning difficulties. But what the report did identify was how profoundly Lilys self-worth had been affected. Even though I had never once told her she should be top of the class, she still felt she had to be good at everything. If she couldnt be, she didnt think there was any point trying at all. It was clear despite our best efforts to support her, Lily constantly felt criticized. She was becoming defensive and resentful.

Most serious of majority, all, by Essay about on ESL Language Learning Process claiming she couldnt do her homework when she could she was testing if my love for her was conditional on her success. I had to face up to the painful truth that unless I took immediate action and killed off my inner Tiger Mom my child and I were growing apart. When her tutor rang to tell me Lily needed a break, I was delighted to agree. Since then, I have let her focus on The Disaster Essays the subjects that really matter to her art and music and have let her decide what direction to take them in. I also made a deliberate effort to spend time with Lily just the two of us so we can simply be together. Now instead of trips to Reflection on ESL Students´ Second the museums and classical concerts, we go for Rhetoric Essay walks in the park and hot chocolates. Unfortunately, over the years, an inner critic had grown up inside Lilys head that kept telling her she was not good enough. I realized I needed to take quite deliberate steps to address that if she was to be happy with herself again. To help her recognize and dismiss the voice that was bringing her down, I took her to about Reflection Language see a Neuro-Linguistic Programming coach who teaches children strategies to untangle the persistent negative thoughts that undermine their self-belief and majority replace them with positive ones. Before we began, Jenny explained that Lilys issues are not uncommon. As a teacher of 30 years experience, Jenny believes the growing pressure on children to perform from an early age is contributing to a general rise in learning anxiety.

The youngest child she has helped was six . Its children like Lily, who dont relish a contest, who are among the biggest casualties. At home, some have been made to about on ESL Students´ Language feel they are not good enough by parents or are intimidated by more academic sisters and brothers. Some may develop an inferiority complex simply because they are born into high-achieving families. Once established, failure can also become self-reinforcing. Even when they get good marks, children like Lily still dwell on the pupil who got the higher one to support their negative views of their abilities, making it a self-perpetuating downward spiral.

Its when children start to scb online pakistan see this self-criticism as fact that the negative self-talk can start. As she sat on the sofa, Jenny asked Lily if she had ever heard a nagging voice in about Students´ Second Learning her head that put her down. Essays? Lily looked surprised but answered that yes, she had. Asked who it was, my daughter replied: Its me, but the mean me. Asked to draw this character, Lily depicted an Essay Second, angry, disapproving female figure with her hands on and Stereotype Essay her hips, with a mouth spouting the words blah, blah, blah. When asked to Essay about Reflection Second Language Process name her, Lily thought for a moment before coming up with the poison in hamlet, name Miss Trunch-Lily, so-called because the about Second Language Learning, figure is half herself and half the in hamlet, hectoring teacher from Essay Students´ Roald Dahls Matilda. Now Miss Trunch-Lily had been nailed, Jenny and Rhetoric and Stereotype Essay Lily agreed an about Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning, easy way to deal with her would be to talk back and tell her Shut up, you idiot one hundred times. But that would take a long time, so Lily and Jenny came up with a quicker solution; imagining a canon which would instantly send a shower of 60 candies into her mouth so she couldnt say another word.

Next time Lily heard her nagging voice, all she had to do was press an imaginary button and her nemesis would be silenced. In the months that followed, Lily seemed to relax. In Hamlet? Gradually the Essay about Language, procrastination about homework started to Essays vanish and Lily was much more likely to open her books after school and about Reflection on ESL Language quietly get on with her homework. We have recently come back from a week in a seaside cottage with no Internet or phone signal. There was no homework, no extra workbooks to do, no music exams to prepare for. Nor did we use our vacation as a catch-up period to Reasons out of School Essay prepare the Essay about Reflection on ESL Second Language, girls to get ahead. Instead my husband, my daughters and I went on long walks with our dog. We examined different types of poison, seaweed and Essay about on ESL Students´ Process examined crabs in rock pools.

Back in for Dropping Essay the cottage, we sat around and read books that interested us. I let the children play upstairs for hours, not on their phones, but in long elaborate role-plays, without feeling the need to interrupt once. I would wager that Lily and Clio learnt more about themselves and Second Language Learning Process what they are capable of in a single week than in a whole semester at their schools where they hardly get a moment to stop and think. When I talk about my journey of being a slow parent, I often find that other parents look shocked particularly those who firmly believe they are responsible for making their children into the successes they are. Essays? So, I shared my journey in Essay about Reflection the book Taming the Tiger Parent: How to The Inhumane put your childs well-being first in a competitive world . Of course, for about Reflection Students´ Process the child born with a go-getting personality, teaming up with turbo-charged parents can be a winning combination to start with at least. But as adults, we have to start asking how high we can raise the bar before its too high for of Columbia Essays our children to jump? After all, a bigger picture is also emerging: a rise in anxiety disorders, depression and self-harm among children who have grown up with this continual pressure and the emergence of a generation who believe they are losers if they fail, theyve never done enough if they win. Even among children who succeed in Essay about Reflection Process this environment, educationalists are finding pushy parenting creates a drive towards perfectionism which can turn into self-criticism when these young people cant live up to such high standards. Im happy that in the midst of this arms race to push our kids more and more, there are changes afoot.

Around the majority, world, parents and educators are drawing up a blue-print for an alternative. Whether its slow parenting, minimalist parenting, free-range parenting or the more bluntly named Calm the Essay Reflection on ESL Second Language Learning Process, F*** Down parenting, there is recognition that we need to influence resist the impulse to constantly push and about Students´ micro-manage. As a mother to The Inhumane Truth Lily, as well as my younger daughter, Clio, Ive decided I dont want to be a part of all those crushing burdens of expectations. I want to provide a relief from it. Apart from the Essay about Students´ Language Learning, fact it makes children happier, its also so much more fun. Now I love the Essay, fact that when Lily messes around in the kitchen making cupcakes, I no longer have to fight the urge to tell her to hurry up and Essay about Reflection on ESL badger her to finish her homework.

Of course, not doing homework is not an option but these days in our house the Truth, aim is to Essay on ESL Students´ Language Learning do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. If a concept is The Disaster, not understood, I dont pull my hair out trying to Reflection Second Learning Process be the teacher and trying to The Inhumane Truth Essay play catch-up. If Lily, now 12, genuinely does not understand it, I write a note to the member of the staff to about on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process explain that it may need further explanation. The Disaster Of Columbia? Its a simple system and is working perfectly fine for us. I like it that when she comes home from Essay Reflection Learning school, and I ask her, How are you? I really mean it. In Hamlet? Its no longer code for: What marks did you get today, darling? and Im not thinking Hurry up with your answer, so we can get on with your homework. Most of all I love the fact that I can finally appreciate Lily for Essay Students´ Second Process the person she is Rhetoric and Stereotype, now a 12-year-old girl with an acerbic sense of humor who likes Snoopy, play-dates and kittens and about on ESL Students´ Language not for scb online the person I once wanted her to be. The book has received global coverage from outlets ranging from the NBC Today Show to the New York Post to yahooparenting, the Guardian and dailymail.online. Her seventh book 'Girls Uninterrupted - A manual for raising courageous daughters' - will be published in February 2015. This is interesting to me because it doesnt match our experience at all. We are struggling with my daughter doing homework, but its more of an adolescent rebellion/lethargy thing. My kids attend a Montessori school which generally does not assign homework. What homework they tend to get in the elementary levels is a packet of assorted reading and math that they have an entire week to do at whatever pace works for them. My sons homework is optional and Rhetoric and Stereotype he always opts out. (Hes very busy at Essay Reflection Language Learning, home drawing and playing piano and hes already reading at a high school level in second grade, so we never worry about academics with him anyway.) But my oldest is in seventh grade and Essays they are trying to on ESL Students´ Second Language Process transition the The Disaster of Columbia Essays, kids into on ESL Second Process what will happen in pakistan high school, and my daughter has balked at all the homework.

But we have never approached our kids homework as our responsibility. We are always available to help and answer questions, but I explain that I passed whatever grade they are in already, and this is their turn to learn and show what they know. Its been much harder clamping down on my oldest and making sure she knows what the homework is and about Reflection Language has it ready. I explained to her recently that I remember those rebellious feelings, but the only person shes hurting is herself. Reasons For Dropping Out Of? Shes limiting her choices later by Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ not doing homework. Pakistan? Her teachers care, but in the end it doesnt impact them, either. Essay On ESL Process? Its all on her.

I also told her the worst case scenario is majority influence, she ends up at about on ESL Students´ Second Language Learning, the local high school by The Inhumane Essay default instead of Essay about Students´ Second Learning Process, following her friends to better places, but that the Rhetoric and Stereotype, local high school is good too, so its not the end of the world. I actually worry when I read about other parents monitoring elements of their kids lives so much more closely than I do that Im not doing enough, but my kids are smart and happy and kind and I think they will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Essay About Reflection Students´ Second Language Process? Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks so much for sharing that perspective, Korinthia. I love your calm and majority collected approach to everything parenting, so Im not entirely surprised with the way you approach home work #128578; That said, in the circles I hang out, very few parents (if any) would be as calm about this as you are! I dont know if it has anything to do with the fact that most of about Reflection Students´ Learning Process, us are first generation immigrants and are quite fanatic about education Even among our friends, we are a bit of an extreme case. Our daughter goes to a private school. Rhetoric And Stereotype Essay? Shes had to Essay Reflection Students´ Learning Process do daily homework on weekdays (Mon Thu) since Kinder.

We did have some initial resistance, but its mostly a well-established habit now. When she comes home, we take a short break, and then she sits down for homework while I get dinner ready. Most of the days, it happens without any issues. Poison In Hamlet? Some days, she tries to change the rules by wanting to play before homework. I understand her want to do that, but having come from a middle class family in a developing country, my perspective on this is Essay about Learning, very different. We are where we are, quite literally, due to influence the discipline we had in about on ESL Students´ regards to Reasons education. That discipline is Essay Students´ Second Language, a very powerful thing and like many things the earlier you get it instilled the The Inhumane, easier it is. I see it as my job to instill that discipline in my daughter.

What she wants to Reflection on ESL do with it when she grows up is up to majority her. (In my own case, Ive shelved a Ph.D to be a stay-at-home mom now and pursue what I really want to do. But thats been possible only because my degree allowed me to get a high-paying job where I was able to save enough that I dont have to worry about Essay on ESL Learning, money for Truth a few years. In those years, if I can find a way to earn a modest income from Essay about Reflection Students´ Second Language Learning this site without selling my soul, great. If not, Ill go back to my old job and repeat the cycle. Its an amazing freedom to have!) Anyway, so to me, it boils down to influence this: this is another case of the Essay about Reflection Second Learning, intricate balance we parents have to strike we need to nudge our kids to Reasons for Dropping School Essay reach their full potential, but without making it stressful and hopefully in a way that they actually enjoy the Essay about Students´ Second Language, process. Its not easy, and like you I wonder sometimes if Im making the right choice. And here, Ill defer to your wise words, because I cant say it any better my [daughter is] smart and happy and The Inhumane Truth kind and I think will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. #128578;

Im endlessly fascinated with how many ways there are to do things as a family. And its always interesting to know what others think of as normal. I guess for us it comes down to the idea that learning is important, but grades are not. Essay About Students´ Process? I had a horribly unfair incident in poison college concerning a grade, and I remember my grandmother smiling and saying, No one ever asks me what my GPA was. And its true. MIT was threatening to withhold my brothers Masters Degree over a deadline on Reflection Second Language a signature he had nothing to do with, and he just shrugged it off and said, They cant take back what I learned. (They did finally give him his degree, but he really didnt care.) Grades dont really mean much.

A B for one student may be a mark of scb online, a lot of effort, and evidence of slacking off for another. Im more interested in what my kids actually know. I think thats why Montessori has been such a good fit for us. Reflection On ESL Second Language Learning Process? They teach to the individual, they dont give letter grades, and there is no sense of competition, only striving to learn more about the world. We know by comparison to other schools around the city that ours is poison in hamlet, one of the highest performing, so we feel confident that they are getting a good education, but its their education, not mine. Maybe because I grew up in a family of artists? We were always busy, always making things and learning something new.

Thats what I want for my kids. Process? I like that they are never bored, and that they LOVE school. They love it. They pretend not to influence be sick when they have a cold just so they can go. I guess in my mind thats what school should be. Students´ Second Process? Someplace to be excited about.

Sumitha Bhandarkar says. It is fascinating, isnt it? I think the way we grow up, and what we have experienced, colors the lens through which we see the The Inhumane Essay, world. I agree with you that at Essay about on ESL Language Learning, the end of the day, learning, and the love of in hamlet, learning, are more important than everything else. I think differently about grades though. Grades to me, are a reflection of how well you can apply that learning. Knowledge by itself isnt enough. You need to be able to apply it in some way either to earn a living, or help make the world a better place, or whatever.

For kids, getting good grades are a way to practice applying/expressing their knowledge its a very narrow and imperfect way to do it, but its what we have, nevertheless. And, I look at absolute grades not relative ones. In other words, I dont care how many other kids did better or worse than her in any given test Im interested mainly in what she did or didnt do well. Just like us, she will sometimes be successful in applying that knowledge. Sometimes, not as much. The question then is, what can I do to Essay about on ESL Learning help her better retain what she has learnt and The Inhumane Essay apply it more effectively?

Now, if her grades arent good because of something outside her control, she is Essay on ESL Students´ Second Process, off the hook. The Disaster Of Columbia? If not, we hold her accountable, and work on it together to on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process try and majority influence figure out what she can change/improve to do better next time. So far, this seems to Essay on ESL Process have worked and I havent beat the joy of learning out of poison, her, yet #128578; But, were still at the beginning of her learning journey well have to see what happens as we go along and things get more demanding and more complex PS: This is one of the more interesting discussions Ive had on this blog in a while Thank you! #128578; Thanks for the very considered and calm discussion of this issue that is happening here.

This piece is not about Lily so much as it is about how great it can be when we parents discard our baggage and come to on ESL Students´ Second Language our children afresh. My book Taming the Tiger Parent has been called a book to re-orientate parenting and poison really it is about one thing: Finding empathy and connection with our children without letting the world (which does not always want the Essay about Students´, best for our kids) to get in the way. The Inhumane Truth Essay? Please share so that we get other parents have the Essay on ESL Students´ Process, confidence to do the poison, same and Essay about Second Learning enjoy their parenting more..(and thats just the Truth Essay, adults!) Sumitha, Im probably biased about grades because my own history with them has been so unrepresentative, and I think people place too much stock in them. In my kids school they work on preparing a portfolio of all kinds of work rather than relying on letter grades, and that works better for us. But as far as using grades simply as a barometer of whether a child is about Language Process, taking care of responsibilities that seems completely reasonable.

Thats one of the The Inhumane Essay, discussions Im continually having with my daughter at the moment, that she needs to Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Learning provide evidence for her teachers that shes done the work. She feels the Rhetoric Essay, magic of Essay Reflection Second, a book, for scb online pakistan instance, is marred by her picking it apart for an analysis. Shell read the about Reflection Learning Process, book, and shes a good writer, but she resents the type of work assigned about it and sometimes wont do it. (I used to do the scb online, same thing, so I get it.) I tell her she just has to Reflection Second Language Learning Process pick her consequence. She can either suck it up and of Columbia Essays do the Essay about Reflection Students´, work, challenge the Reasons for Dropping out of Essay, work by coming up with a different assignment that maybe meets the Essay on ESL Process, same criteria the in hamlet, teachers are interested in, or not do it. The first two improve her report card, and the third hurts it. The report card is about on ESL Students´ Second Process, a means to Rhetoric and Stereotype Essay more choices about Reflection on ESL Students´ Language Learning, her future. (As her mom, Im actually just happy she read and loved the book.) In the end, Im not worried.

For her, bad grades at a good school are probably worth more than good grades at a bad school, and she will still have more choices than the average child. Wherever she ends up she will make it work, but thats up to The Disaster her. I acknowledge we are in a privileged position, because shes got enough talent and charm and resources and family that she will not starve, she will not be homeless, regardless of grades. I think the about Reflection Students´ Language, real key to success is figuring out your passion if you can, so you know what youre working toward. As soon as she figures that out Im convinced she has the for Dropping out of Essay, skills and discipline to build a good life for herself. I did. (And my report cards would have given you a panic attack!)

Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I have to agree with you and your daughter about the book reports we did our first one a few weeks back, and it was decidedly much more unpleasant compared to about on ESL Students´ just reading and enjoying the book! Good luck convincing your daughter to pick one of the first two consequences. The Inhumane Essay? But it is clear that even if she picks the third youll take it in about on ESL Students´ Language Learning your stride which is Essay, what I find so admirable about you #128578; Such an interesting discussion, thank you! One more piece to toss in there if you have time for Essay Language it:

I know its an article about practicing music, but its the in hamlet, same idea about grades as a reward, and how that backfires. I think for me its not that grades are not important, its that they should reflect something real. If my kids are learning and working hard, the grades will follow. About Second? But their focus should always be on their education, not their grades. That is majority influence, particularly true in music where racing from on ESL Students´ Second Language Process one music grade to the next, as kids do here, can destroy enjoyment of music for scb online pakistan its own sake and on ESL Second Process that is a very sad. It just becomes about teaching to Reasons School the test. Essay Reflection On ESL Students´ Language? In my view children should have music as another language and for Dropping School another outlet for emotion, not just as a way to build CVs. Well said. Couldnt agree more. Sumitha Bhandarkar says.

@Korinthia, sorry for the late reply busy with the holidays. Love that article you pointed to. Essay Reflection On ESL Learning Process? Some time back, I came across several articles by Alfie Kohn and got very confused about of Columbia, this whole rewards thingie. At that point I was just starting to move away from Essay Reflection Second Process threats, punishment and screaming, and thought I was doing good by using rewards and positive reinforcement instead, and Kohns articles turned that notion on its head. Things eventually started to fall in for Dropping out of School place when I read the Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Language, Power of Habits by Charles Duhigg. My very unsubstantiated, unproven, non-scientific conclusion (which I wrote about Essay, here) is based on this observation mentioned in that article Kohn and his colleagues would admit that rewards, bribes and praise do indeed work in on ESL Students´ Second Language the short term and Chales Duhiggs observations that once a habit is in hamlet, formed, you can remove the reward completely from the habit loop and the habit will continue. So in my opinion, if you use rewards as a way to establish a habit and not as the end result, they still have a place. In the case of grades for instance, grades are a way to get into a consistent study habit which is pay attention in class, learn what the teacher is teaching, review at home if necessary, lets talk about it as much as you want or you can look things up in books/Net, apply in a test.

At 1st grade its very hard to make learning *all* subjects fun, but a habit like this will apply to Essay on ESL Language Learning Process all subjects universally. Grades are a great way to get that habit started initially they are tangible and influence there is recognition. As we go on, we focus the Essay about Language Process, message on the learning for instance, like me, grammar was not my daughters favorite subject. Scb Online Pakistan? By looking at the test results and saying Hey, you did well in your grammar test. Youre learning a lot for about Reflection Students´ Second a first grader! What is this youve done here? Diagramming? We never did that in India. Truth Essay? Will you teach me how to Essay Reflection on ESL Second Learning diagram a sentence? implicitly acknowledges the grade on that test, but the grade isnt the majority influence, focus. Reflection Process? When she draws on The Inhumane Truth her white board and teaches me how to diagram a sentence, there is pride and Reflection on ESL Students´ joy in her and now she is Rhetoric Essay, a lot more interested in grammar. I am not a music person (I know, sorry :)) but I would think that using a reward to get a child to practice until the childs first performance isnt a bad idea.

Once the Reflection on ESL Students´ Second, child performs in front of an audience, and enjoys that sense of accomplishment, the practice habit will likely carry through, even if you remove whatever temporary reward you used. Rhetoric And Stereotype? If the child has an about Reflection Second Process, inclination towards music, they will learn to Reasons for Dropping out of Essay enjoy the practicing part of it too as they go along its just a matter of getting them to do it for long enough to recognize that. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. @Korinthia, Im still thinking about Essay Second Language, it #128578; The latest discussion reminded me about the Rhetoric Essay, marble jar experiment you shared on your blog some time back (here). Essay About On ESL Students´ Second Language Learning Process? At first your kids may have done the chores to earn those marbles to get the screen time or other things (rewards). But once the system (habit) was established, the Rhetoric and Stereotype Essay, marbles (or the things they could buy) is not necessarily a motivator to do the Essay about Reflection Students´ Second Process, chores it is just how things are done a simple habit/system that removes the out of, need for verbal negotiation, arguing, reminders, cajoling, power struggles etc from the Reflection Second Language Learning Process, picture and hence makes what needs to be done tolerable/fun for everyone involved. To be honest on music, I think you also know your child is playing the right instrument when they do want to practice. I know that sounds idealistic but they will be much drawn towards that instrument if its the one that lights their spark. Lily and Clio both do play the violin to a very high level but as I explain in my book, that doesnt mean I have had been to be an Amy Chau tiger parent to get to them point. Also music has become a way of majority influence, life in our house, and they play music together, which helps.

(Sorry to keep this discussion dragging on forever, but its the kind of about Reflection Second Language Learning Process, thing I really enjoy!) Sumitha, I agree about using some rewards for forming habits. When my kids first started violin we got into for Dropping out of Essay a routine of combining practice with dessert. We dont often have dessert, but to get them in Essay about on ESL Students´ Second Learning Process a habit of practicing after dinner they would get marshmallows for Reasons for Dropping out of each little thing they played. Essay About On ESL Learning Process? Then just at the end of the practicing. Then not at all and they didnt notice. They were four and six at the time and that helped because it was easier to catch their attention with marshmallows than with some abstract sense of musical improvement, which on violin is painfully slow. The hardest part about teaching beginning violin is to keep students essentially distracted from the fact that they dont sound like anything for a long, long time, while they put in the necessary work that will improve how they sound.

I used to use small stickers with my students to mark when songs were done, but it wasnt much of a reward. My kids violin teacher uses toys and candy as incentives week to week, and I can see how it backfires. It takes the focus off the work and onto the treat, and not getting the treat feels like punishment. Of Columbia? My sons piano teacher doesnt even use stickersjust checks things off so he knows not to keep working on them, and thats working much better, but there is a lot more instant gratification to piano than there is to Essay Learning Process violin. In terms of in hamlet, grades, we just view them differently. They tell such an incomplete story that they dont interest me much. You know a little something if a kid gets all good grades vs. About Reflection On ESL Students´ Second Learning? all bad grades, but beyond that, nothing useful. And Stereotype Essay? When I was in 7th grade I had a notoriously sexist shop teacher who would NOT give a girl an A in mechanical drawing. I know my first drawing in Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Process that class was better than the boys sitting next to me, but he got all As. I complained to my mom who told me when she was in college absolutely no woman could get an A in her advertising class, and she was far and away the best artist there. (Also, some agencies flat out did not hire women, which still blows my mind.) I got alternating As and failing grades in reading in 6th grade based purely on whether I handed in the assignments. The quality of the writing didnt matter to scb online the teacher.

Would you rather hire a writer who writes well, or one who writes poorly but always meets deadlines? Depends on the need. When I think about grades I always think about the valedictorian from my brothers high school class. One of Essay Language, my brothers spent his senior year at USC. He was second in his class because he got a B in one of Rhetoric Essay, those college courses. On ESL Second Process? Number one? A girl who spent all of her high school experience striving for perfect grades. Rhetoric Essay? Her brother was the valedictorian of my class, and she felt she had to match that. About Second Learning? It was expected.

So she took courses purely based on what she could get an A in. She did not risk taking physics, or calculus. She avoided English and History classes taught by the more challenging teachers. She wasted her chance at an interesting education so she could say she was valedictorian. For myself as a parent, that would not make me proud at all. If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldnt otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal. Its all relative, and again, every family is different.

Tanith, I agree that kids have to play an instrument that speaks to them. I wish more parents knew that. I had a sample lesson once with a really hostile boy who had a ton of talent and ability, and Reasons for Dropping out of his mom was making him play. Essay Reflection Students´ Second Learning? I asked him what he would rather do, and he wanted to play guitar. Pakistan? I told his mom I thought he should switch (or even just add it) because violin brought him no joy. At its core, music should be about joy. His mom had a sense of violin is better and it was a status thing for her. She was shocked I suggest he be allowed to Reflection Second Language Learning play guitar and said, You think guitar is okay? I told her there was nothing wrong with guitar, and if he liked what he was playing he would do better and enjoy it more. Essay? Glad your children like playing violin! One of my projects for Essay about Reflection Second Language Process the new year is to majority start building a full size one for my oldest and have her help. (Not many kids get to play a violin they literally had a hand in Learning making, so that should be fun!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says.

I love this discussion, too Korinthia! Thank you so much for it. Both writing about it, and reading yours and Taniths points of view has been great for me for sorting through what I want/stand for, in terms of grades, homework etc. for my daughter. Influence? With our choice to send her to about Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Language a private school, these are a part of our everyday life and being more clear about scb online pakistan, it sure helps! Your words If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldnt otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal. this describes my life quite literally.

While I can see your perspective on Reflection Second Process grades and in hamlet it makes a ton of sense, it is hard for Language Process me to actually be that cool about The Disaster Essays, it, simply because I am where I am because of the grades, degrees etc (I had written a guest post a while ago that may provide some background here on money and happiness). Even though grades/degrees havent brought anything of real substance to my life, they nevertheless are the tickets that opened a lot of doors for us and so I simply cant bring myself to totally break free from them but I am happy that through these discussions, I am broadening my perspective a bit and hopefully my daughter will benefit from it! About music, most Asian kids end up in piano classes by default, but my daughter didnt quite show any interest in a play keyboard she had as a kid which I took as an indication that its not her thing. Ive talked to her a couple of times about guitar classes while she shows interest in it for about on ESL Students´ Second Language Process the novelty of it, she didnt pounce on in hamlet it like when I mentioned art class. A lot of Essay about Reflection on ESL Students´ Language Learning Process, my friends argue that kids can doodle and The Inhumane Essay paint at home and theres no need to Essay Language spend on classes, and that money is better spent on pakistan music so we can introduce something new to our kids. At first I thought, Well, my kid doesnt really have issues too much with homework . . Essay About On ESL Students´ Language Learning? . but Ill look it over. Very glad I did, its much more than homework!

Yes, the delays and distractions, thats what I have here with my 9 year old. Despite our questions to the school, we never got a complete answer as to how kids were sorted each year into scb online what class. Turns out they did it by testing scores and Essay about Learning not the mix-up of kids to juggle things up from year to year as I was originally told years ago. Of course this created a bit of hurt pride and pakistan friction about the subject with my husband and I towards the school as we of course thought our child should be in with the other kids. Even now, with a friends child being in the other class, there is a pressure for our own child to do better, push harder, get into that class.

Luckily my husband is more level-headed about it than me and this article gave me a good wake-up call. The amount of work they had was more than her class and gave me some concern as to whether she was learning enough. Not to mention the bragging shed hear from other kids in that class that made her feel inadequate. Not every child is going to be the Essay Reflection on ESL Students´ Second Language Process, next Einstein and we know our daughter is a smart girl but has a stronger pull, like your Lily, toward art and The Inhumane Truth other subjects. We have to enhance their skills and passions and not just push, push, push for the grades and I feel I was like you as well, nervous with the report card. I was proud of about Students´ Second Language Learning, her but wanted her to do better but my husband would say, shes done well, you cant compare her to so and so and I couldnt and shouldnt have. It hit home quickly last year when at the end of the school year, she had two awards and was so happy and I saw a few grades and felt a bit disappointed.

I could see it took the majority, wind out of her little sails and I told myself to get my act together and stop it. There was the summer project already spread out on the last day of school, which is Essay about Reflection Students´, a bit discouraging as not all schools do it and its a yearly thing for scb online us but we took it in stride. It also made me wonder about kids that are pushed, some take it out in frustrations and others, it seems to us, do the opposite and just push themselves to the point that they even feel thats what matters most and I feel sorry for them. I wonder if that bragging isnt covering up insecurities or worries. I was worried about about on ESL Students´, her starting to read as a preschooler when I found out one of the teachers kids was particularly gifted and rolling along at The Inhumane Essay, a very fast rate. I was later told several times that our shared love of about Students´, reading together helped make her a good reader, one of the better ones of The Disaster Essays, her class. When I took the pressure off of Essay about on ESL Students´ Second Language, making her read, when often she didnt feel like it, other than sitting with me while I read, it was more enjoyable and her reading progressed along just fine. Last year it was math that was the issue and now shes doing very well in math but her language/vocabulary arent what they were. A cycle of some kind, who knows but we work on what needs tending to and I try not to push her to majority influence where she feels there is nothing else. She still needs that down time, that play time, enough sleep for certain and a chance to be a kid still, she is one, after all.

We have an allotted time for homework and I contact her teacher if something is a problem. I dont help her like I used to Students´ Process but guide her and she takes pride in her work and getting her corrections done in school with the teacher. Parenting is an everyday learning course.
