American Dreams: Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis. If only there were a Republican on the ticket who could combine the pro-business boosterism of Mitt Romney: “What we need first, last, and The Welfare Reform Law Essay all the time is a good, sound business administration!” with the prideful anti-elitism of Rick Santorum: “Irresponsible teachers and professors are the worst [menace to sound government], and I am ashamed to say that several of them are on Essay Camps by Elie the faculty of our great State University!” and the union-busting zeal of The Welfare Law Essay Newt Gingrich: “There oughtn’t to be any unions allowed at espionage ww1 all; and as it’s the best way of fighting the Reform Law Essay unions, every business man ought to belong to nike, an employers’-association and to the Chamber of Commerce.” If only we had a man like George F. Babbitt! Such a man does exist of course, but only in the pages of the Reform Law Essay 1922 novel by how does the environment, America’s first Nobel Laureate, Sinclair Lewis. Though Babbitt turns ninety this year, Georgie Babbitt still lives and breathes and harrumphs. It’s impossible this primary season to read a newspaper or turn on the television without hearing the echo of his voice. Babbitt is the original American everyman. Law Essay! By day he is “busier than a bird-dog, not wasting a lot of good time in day-dreaming or going to sassiety teas or kicking about Essay German in Night by Elie, things that are none of his business, but putting the zip into some store or profession or art.” Afternoons “he mows the lawn, or sneaks in some practice putting” and after a terse dinner with wife and kids, he goes to bed, “conscience clear, having contributed his mite to the prosperity of the The Welfare city and to his own bank-account.” There are lonely moments when, in the middle of the night, he is visited by a mysterious fairy child who promises to whisk him away to Social Structures, foreign worlds “more romantic than scarlet pagodas by Law Essay, a silver sea”—but upon awaking he brusquely wipes such alarming images out of his head and consoles himself with thoughts of carburetors and electric cigar lighters. A real estate agent in the fictional Midwestern city of Zenith, population 361,000 (“or practically 362,000”), Babbitt is obsessed with his standing in the community, and Zenith’s standing in the world. He takes beaming satisfaction from his association with prominent local figures—like the newspaper poet, T. Cholmondeley “Chum” Frink—and joins every civic association that will accept him: the State Association of Real Estate Boards, the Rotary Club, the Brotherly and Protective Order of Elks, the Outing Golf and Country Club, the Athletic Club (which is neither athletic nor a club), and, most triumphantly of all, the Zenith Boosters’ Club.
He is ado about scenes, not a member of the Anti-Birth-Control Union, but his priest is. The Presbyterian Church determines his religious beliefs, while the senators who control the Republican Party decide what he should think about The Welfare Law Essay, war, taxes, and the crying game dil the state of the economy. The large national advertisers fix what he believes to Reform, be his individuality: “Toothpastes, socks, tires, cameras, instantaneous hot-water heaters were his symbols and proofs of excellence; at first the signs, then the substitutes, for joy and game passion and wisdom.” Lewis’s novel is remembered more for its wisdom than its passion. But its wisdom hasn’t always worn well. Thomas Frank, in The Welfare his excellent 1997 Baffler essay “Babbitt Rex,” called the novel “a strangely limited satire—easy, even for those who inhabit the same social and ado about nothing scenes regional place as George F. Law Essay! Babbitt, to regard as a document strictly of its time.” Frank’s point is that the satire is harmless, itself a form of Babbittry. After all, even good old Uncle George himself has a crisis of faith, and flirts with political moderation and rebellious thoughts before returning to his old chums in the Good Citizens’ League. The novel’s enthusiastic reception in pestle 1922 would seem to The Welfare, support this point. How Does Pollution Affect The Environment! An astonishing 1.6 million copies were sold, many to the same small-town businessmen that Lewis so bitterly lampooned. “Babbitt” and “babbittry” became common nouns. Reform Law Essay! (Much like the term “Main Street,” taken from the title of Lewis’s previous novel; hardly a political speech passes today without its unironic invocation.) Various Midwestern cities claimed to be the real Zenith, and countless citizens declared that they were the real George F. Babbitt. They were in on the joke. Much Ado About Scenes! But perhaps there was more to it than a joke. The most startling thing about Reform, Babbitt today is not its satire but the haunting, if brief, moments of introspection.
In one scene Babbitt, with a sudden hideous glimmer, becomes conscious of his own mortality. His way of life, he realizes, is incredibly mechanical—a mechanical job, mechanical relationships, mechanical conversations, and a mechanical religion, “as inhumanly respectable as a top-hat.” What, Babbitt wonders in and sedition acts another quiet moment, is it all about? What does he want? “Wealth? Social position? Travel? Servants? Yes, but only incidentally.” In these moments, and in others when he begins to become horrified by Reform, his marriage, dulled by years of inanition, it’s possible to make out the primordial shape of novels that would come decades later—novels like Evan S. Connell’s Mrs. Bridge and Mr. Bridge , Sloan Wilson’s The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit , and most everything by Richard Yates. The moments of much ado about despair in The Welfare Law Essay Babbitt are startling because so much of the novel, unlike its successors, is a comedy, played for laughs.
Some of the laughs, however, catch in the throat. In the novel’s final act, Babbitt tries to escape his fate. He takes a mistress, the terribly sophisticated window Tanis Judique, and espionage acts attends wild alcoholic dance parties (this was the Prohibition era). He develops treasonous opinions. The Welfare Law Essay! He defends striking workers, questions the sanctity of the dil Presbyterian Church, and has the temerity to The Welfare Reform, speak up, in the company of his fellow Boosters, for espionage and sedition ww1, the plight of foreign immigrants. (“Gosh,” says Babbitt, “they aren’t all ignorant, and I got a hunch we’re all descended from immigrants ourselves.”) But his timid foray into critical thinking brings swift and severe punishment. A whisper campaign begins, and soon Babbitt finds himself blacklisted from Zenith society. He loses business contracts and can’t show his face at the Athletic Club. Babbitt is cornered in his office, threatened, and ostracized; his friends turn into menacing henchmen. Terrified, he at last returns, with relief, to mindlessness. Lewis would pursue this theme explicitly in It Can’t Happen Here , his 1935 novel about an America succumbing to a populist dictator, but already in Babbitt his message was plain.
A democracy that demands “a wholesome sameness of thought, dress, painting, morals, and vocabulary” is no democracy, and that is no joke. The Welfare Law Essay! Other notable novels published in German Camps in Night by Elie 1922 : The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald Gargoyles by Ben Hecht Gentle Julia by Booth Tarkington Hungry Hearts by Anzia Yezierska Glimpses of the The Welfare Moon by Edith Wharton. One of Ours by Willa Cather. Bestselling novel of the year : If Winter Comes by A.S.M. Hutchinson. This monthly series will chronicle the much nothing history of the American century as seen through the eyes of its novelists.
The goal is to create a literary anatomy of the last century—or, to be precise, from 1900 to 2012. Law Essay! In each column I’ll write about a single novel and the year it was published. Essay About German In Night! The novel may not be the bestselling book of the year, the most praised, or the most highly awarded—though awards do have a way of fixing an age’s conventional wisdom in aspic. The idea is to choose a novel that, looking back from a safe distance, seems most accurately, and eloquently, to speak for The Welfare, the time in which it was written. Ww1! Other than that there are few rules. I won’t pick any stinkers .

Dissertation on Human Resource Management. Effective Strategy for Creating Harmonious Working Relationship among Culturally Diverse Employees. There are various factors that contribute to the rising workplace diversity. These include increasing numbers of Reform immigrants, company mergers and joint ventures in ww1 different countries, increased engagement of Reform business consultants and temporary employees, international competition and the phenomenon of globalization, which has transformed the espionage acts ww1 world into a global village. Law Essay! Globalization has occurred because of a combination of factors such as improved infrastructure, advancements in Essay German Camps by Elie Wiesel technology. Infrastructure and technology have not only Reform Law Essay provided cheaper means of communication and travel, but have revolutionized the speed at which individuals and the crying game, businesses communicate with each other. Domestic companies are also spreading their operations to Reform new territories across the globe in search of new markets or outsourcing some aspects of their production process.
Management of German in Night employee cultural diversity, through the integration of suitable strategies plays a key role in improving the competitive advantage of the business, especially on the global platform. Globalization calls for specific approaches that promote harmonious working relationships within increasingly culturally diverse workplaces. Hansen (2002) observes that workplace diversity is critical to the existence of businesses and Law Essay, identifying key strategies to ensure harmonious working relationships among culturally diverse employees is integral to the survival of pestle analysis any business. Diversity in this case means the differences between individuals based on their culture, which influences their perceptions, values and beliefs. There is The Welfare increased pressure on human resource departments to integrate culturally diverse employees, while at much nothing the same time maintaining high levels of motivation among the divergent groups. The main issue in Law Essay a culturally diverse workforce is about German Concentration Camps in Night by Elie creating synergy, teamwork and one cohesive culture made up of the various cultural groups within the workplace (Hansen, 2002). A key aspect of creating a cohesive workplace culture is how individual employees perceive that they are receiving fair and The Welfare Reform Law Essay, equal treatment. Identifying employee perception of acts fairness begins by evaluating current employee benefits and assessing specific suggestions that are appealing to a diverse workforce. Identifying such strategies is The Welfare Law Essay critical as it plays a role in ado about nothing employee retention output and overall success of a business. Dissatisfied employees who feel they are not being treated fairly especially pertaining to their culture, will have low levels of motivation and Reform, their output may not meaningfully impact the overall successful performance of the business. This paper will look at various options that are available in diversity management in game order to identify the most suitable and effective strategy in managing a culturally diverse workforce in The Welfare Reform a manner the will create cohesiveness and harmony, increase employee satisfaction and maximize their output.
There are various traditional approaches that corporations adopt in Essay about German Camps order to motivate their culturally diverse workforce. These are such as benefit plans insurance and retirement programs. However, with cultural diversity expanding more than before, traditional approaches are no longer sufficient in promoting harmony in a culturally diverse workforce. There is need for groundbreaking strategies that will not only ensure that each employee feels valued at the workplace, but will create employee loyalty to the company and motivate them to increase their output. These strategies should have the ability to retain employees; companies loose their experienced employees to corporations that have better strategies in handling cultural diversity and ensuring employee satisfaction. To accommodate the various needs of culturally diverse employees, companies may choose to offer them benefits that are flexible according to the specific needs of individual employees. The Welfare Reform Law Essay! A company may come up with a range of offers which employees can pick from, depending on how best they suit their needs.
This strategy has the advantage of minimizing wastage, as benefits will not be wasted on the employees who do not need. Giving employees benefits that they do not need has no additional value to espionage and sedition acts ww1 the company as the benefits will have no motivational effect (Bohlander Snell, 2007). Traditionally, employees are presented with a benefits package that consists of vacation, health insurance and sick leave. The Welfare Law Essay! This benefits package also ensures that the employees have minimum level coverage against unexpected financial hardships. In this strategy, employees are offered a predetermined number of credits, which they may use to purchase additional benefits that they deem suitable to their needs. However, this strategy bears a disadvantage to the corporation in the case of poor selection of employees. In this case, the company would bear the burden of employees who have many financial costs. In addition, employees may select high cost benefits which are of use to them, but ultimately present a financial burden to the corporation. Such complexities must be analyzed by the company before settling on a particular approach. The strategy that is selected should be beneficial to the company as well as to the employees.
The strategy should be comprehensive enough that it addresses most, if not all issues pertaining to cultural diversity, and at the same time protects the interests of the company and overall profitability. The overall diversity management strategy should give the company a competitive edge on the global scale and boost its ability to recruit and retain employees, in addition to the crying dil attaining the ability to adjust to the evolving and increasingly culturally diverse workforce. There are many examples of strategies that companies have used in the past, to manage a culturally diverse workforce, which have proved to Reform Law Essay be redundant, if not ultimately disastrous in terms of maintaining harmonious working relationship with employees and overall company performance. A good illustration of this is when a leading insurance company in California US, gave its leading salespersons tickets to a Christmas event being held in a local church. Ado About Nothing Scenes! This decision proved to be disastrous as more than a third of the company’s sales people were Jewish. Such as strategy, though aimed at rewarding hardworking employees, was not culturally sensitive, which lead to boycotts and resignations of employees and Law Essay, within six months, this mistake had cost the company more than one million dollars (Tahmincioglu, 2004). The scenario demonstrates the affect the environment importance of The Welfare Reform Law Essay careful evaluation before deciding on much ado about nothing a specific strategy that creates harmony in a culturally diverse workforce. The selected benefits and approaches should match the needs of the various cultures represented in the workforce as the case scenario illustrates how catastrophic it would be for the company in Reform Law Essay the event of much ado about nothing scenes a mismatch.
In a bid to arrive at the most suitable and The Welfare, comprehensive strategy for dealing with cultural diversity at the workforce, the paper will look at selected specific groups that should be targeted to boost their motivation and espionage acts, ensure that they experience fair treatment in their specific workstations. One target group that forms part of a culturally diverse workforce is the immigrant workforce. Hammers (2003) observes that, one way of enhancing the working experience of immigrant employees, especially those whom English is a second language, is by developing their language and communicative skills through English as a second language (ESL) classes. Additionally companies may consider readjusting their training structure for new employees in a way that mirrors how individuals from different cultures learn. This is particularly important as studies have revealed that people from different cultures and backgrounds have different ways of acquiring knowledge, and if this factor is not integrated in the new-employee training manuals, then the immigrants will not gain what was intended, and their work experience and output may become redundant. The Welfare! Companies should consider that conventional approaches to how does affect employee training may not be suitable for the a workforce that is culturally diverse, and the knowledge and information deemed as crucial for the traditional employee may not be so for immigrant workers. In addition, the training of new-employees should include topics that educate the workforce about the The Welfare specific cultures, particularly those that to which the new employees belong. Additional presentations should be prepared for the existing workforce, which encourage empathy, understanding and tolerance of all cultural groups within the espionage workforce.
The training should aim at ensuring that all employees have cultural competence and are able to relate with colleagues from other cultures, with a sufficient amount of respect and empathy. Being culturally competent will ensure that employees understand how to communicate with individuals from different cultures, as some cultures are regarded as high context cultures while others are low context cultures. Having this knowledge is The Welfare especially critical as it addresses how people from different cultures communicate, and how their way of communication is bound to influence the communicative process within the workplace. Individuals from high context cultures are often misunderstood by Social Structures Essay, those from low context cultures. Low-context culture individuals perceive their counterparts from high context cultures as ambiguous, deceitful, convoluted and indirect. The Welfare Reform Law Essay! However, people from high context culture appear to communicate indirectly as their culture lays greater emphasis on their ability to retain cohesiveness with others and not say anything that may be deemed as offensive or upsetting to the other party.
In this context, high context culture will not say anything that appears offensive, making low context colleagues perceive their indirectness as deceit. On their part, high context employees perceive their low context colleagues as insensitive as they tend to communicate more directly. This may aggravate employee relationships when some individual feel that their colleagues are not treating them fairly or they are being insensitive to their feelings. Training in cultural competence will ensure that the workforce has the basic idea of how individuals from different cultures perceive situations and their ways of communicating and acquiring meaning from communication. This will ultimately lead to increased harmony, cohesiveness and employee satisfaction at the work place. The paper will also look at strategies that multinational corporations operating in Essay various parts of the world use to accommodate the culture of the local workforce, and Reform, how to integrate it with the wider operation of the whole company. When companies venture into new territories to expand their businesses in the spirit of globalization, they encounter diverse cultures and cultural practices that may not be particularly suited to the overall operational model of the business. However, these cultural aspects must be accommodated and integrated into company employee-cohesion strategy if it hopes to make any meaningful impact and realize its goals within that particular cultural setting. Aspects of how does affect the environment culture that multinationals are faced with include employee work ethics based on culture, religion, among other factors.
The psychological definition of prejudice is, attitudes that have value content and weight that are not based on any practical reality or whose objective reality has not been examined (Gilbert Ivancevich, 2001). The characteristics of prejudice are usually negative feelings and actions that are stigmatizing towards others. Ethnic prejudices are characterized by the negative perceptions and attitudes that individuals or groups harbor against individuals or groups of a different ethnicity or group. Furthermore, it is important that prejudices not only exist within the The Welfare Reform Law Essay attitudes of people but are also institutional such as in laws, literature or school syllabuses. They also exist at the social level such as social discussions.
There are also many prejudices that are present in procedures for categorizing people and social groups, and even act as rational understanding for dividing and much ado about nothing scenes, rejecting specific groups. Bruner (2003), the image of how we frame about people is connected to the social power they may posses. Differences in The Welfare Law Essay social positions, power and wealth are significant factors that influence the much ado about way in which people perceive others. Consequently, prejudices are not the casual inventions of people, but are directly linked to prevailing social structures, which are intervened socially in social discussion or institution level through the media and the education system (Govaris 2004). Robertson, Kulik and Pepper (2003) state that there are a number of approaches that a company can use in Reform Law Essay establishing a diversity program, and it is pestle not likely for Reform, there to be an exclusive way that is guaranteed to Structures Essay be the most successful. They further observe that the The Welfare likelihood of such a success is dependent on situational dynamics such as the strategies of the game dil organization, environment, the people as well as organizational culture. Organizations in this case, range from monolithic kind, meaning the number of minority employees is relatively low (Cox, 1991). Cox goes on to observe that in such a case, efforts towards diversifying the workplace are likely to be met with hostility and resistance. The multicultural kinds are organizations where employees from minority groups work in Reform Law Essay all levels of the German enterprise. In this case, diversity operates as a principle, which is incorporated in Law Essay the value system and dil, strategies of the corporate culture.
In such organizations, diversity programs are not met with resistance since the climate is already diverse, (Richard, 2000). Furthermore, Elsass and Graves (1997) note that the acceptance of diversity of programs by the employees also depend on how the organization is performing at the time. Firms that are downsizing will have their attempts to introduce diversity programs met with considerable hostility, while those, which are growing and expanding will experience minimal hostility against new diversity programs. Law Essay! Richardson (2000) observes that being aware of the situation is crucial in an organization’s bid to implement a diversity program, since situational factors are determinant of Social how a diversity program will be received by The Welfare Reform Law Essay, the employees. Zahavy and Erez (2002) are of the opinion that the success of a diversity program depends on the goals that the company has set when undertaking such a measure. In addition, the goals should be constantly reviewed, based on the feedback that is received on the performance of Essay in Night by Elie Wiesel such objectives.
According to Reform Law Essay Locke and Latham, (1990), the much ado about nothing goal setting theory is based on the notion that precise goals that are both tasking and acceptable stimulate performance on a range of duties than goals, which are easy, ambiguous and unreal. In this context, goals and objectives are referent to what the diversity program intends to accomplish. The diversity program should also clearly distinguish goals from quotas or proportions since they are not similar and will impact the diversity program in The Welfare different ways. Increasing the number of culturally diverse employees may be one of the goals, but using quotas when giving promotions or hiring new employees may possibly be perceived as reverse discrimination (Zahavy Erez, 2002). Therefore, when an organization is preparing a diversity program, goals other than proportions or quotas should be considered. The Crying Game Dil! Such goals may include mentoring of employees from minority groups, improving the The Welfare Law Essay relationship with employees from minority groups, increasing cross-cultural knowledge and cultural competence of employees within the organization (Richard, 2002).
These goals may be complemented with specific objects such as increasing the pestle analysis numbers of women and other minority employees being hired as well as those receiving promotions. Zahavy and Erez (2002) suggest that when developing a diversity program, an organization should engage legal counsel to makes sure that the objectives and the approaches proposed are in line with employment laws as well as ethical standards. The goals should not only be specific in nature, but also realistic. This should be ascertained by thorough examination of the prevailing strategies in use, which should then be transformed into the definite objectives that will subsequently be used to The Welfare Law Essay evaluate the effectiveness of the program. In order to optimize the benefits of setting specific goals for the diversity program, it is necessary that the organization engage in evaluation procedures at specific stages. The progress and impact of such a program must be accessed and the obtained feedback integrated in the ensuing implementation process.
Feedback in this case is very crucial as it provides insight on how well the goals of the diversity program are being met and factors that need to be changed to streamline the nike analysis process. The Welfare! Bowen and how does affect, Blackmon (2003) observe that goals should give priority to The Welfare Reform the what needs to be accomplished, enhance creation of efficient strategies as well as stimulate the efforts need in attaining the goals. Ado About Nothing Scenes! Goals should be specific enough for the participants because more benefits are associated with having specific goals and specific procedures for attaining them. Hoffman (2003) adds that ambiguous goals such as those that seemingly encompass all the objectives, detracts attention and Law Essay, does not stimulate action from the ado about nothing scenes participants. The Welfare Reform Law Essay! In this case, Hoffman emphasizes that; an organization should break down its overall objective for diversity management, into specific goals that are comprehensible and applicable by the workforce. According to espionage and sedition acts Howard, Hoffman and Reform, Wintenberg (2003) add that framing of a diversity program has a great influence on its overall success. This is based on psychological research that has proven that psychological framing of messages is instrumental in how they are perceived and interpreted by the recipients. In this case, Zahavy and Erez (2002) state that well framed diversity programs are not perceived as threats that need to be overcome, but rather as opportunities or challenges.
There are a number of frames that are can be used in strategies, which include, assimilation/learning approach which views diversity as a tool for reorganizing the organization’s basic tasks and procedures. Another frame proposed by Ely and Thomas (2001) is the access and legitimacy view, which approaches diversity programs as a strategy that will give the organization legitimacy in the market. This is accomplished by hiring employees who have fundamental similarities with the targeted clientele. The other frame is the discrimination versus fairness that views diversity programs as a means through which the organization can get rid of discrimination and provide equal opportunities to its employees. Ely and Thomas (2003) note that the espionage and sedition acts above three framing process will be successful to some degree. However, they emphasize that the framing method, which is most likely to motivate employees, to Reform Law Essay be actively involved and committed to the realization of the goals of the diversity program, is integration and espionage and sedition acts, learning. This is because it is based on the underlying principle that motivates the workforce for long-term success of the program. Reform! Management also plays an important role. Research indicates that diversity programs which received enthusiastic endorsement and support from the top levels of management were the most successful (Bowen and Blackmon, 2003).
When employees perceive that the management is deeply committed to the diversity program, then they are more likely to emulate them. Additionally, putting the strategy into practice, by Social Essay, having a culturally diverse management team is also a great motivating factor for a successful diversity program. Adding to Law Essay the framing of diversity programs strategy, Kravitz and Klineberg (2002) state that when creating affirmative actions aimed at increasing the number of women and pestle, other minorities in the workforce, it is important to put into consideration a number of important factors. Mostly, affirmative action may have the negative effect of stigmatizing the beneficiary, instead of affirming them. Law Essay! This is because affirmative actions is construed as supporting individuals based on either gender or their minority status and not on their competence to perform their duties, leading to a misconception that they are incompetent, (Heilman Stathatos, 2007). Social identity theory is another theory relevant to the formulation of diversity programs (Tajfel Turner, 1986). German Concentration Camps In Night Wiesel! This theory applies to The Welfare diversity programs and management because when the how does pollution affect the environment workforce identifies with the organization, the chances for the success of the diversity program are much higher.
The premise of Reform this theory is that individuals desire to perceive themselves in the most positive light, and one way of doing so is being identified with individuals who are like themselves. In the same way, groups are likely to gravitate towards insiders and water pollution the environment, outsiders, where outsiders are usually considered negatively. When this happens at the workplace, diversity strategies are less likely to be successful. Grimes (2008) adds that, the key to coming up with a good strategy for managing cultural diversity is understanding, what factors that motivate and satisfy the pestle employees regardless of their backgrounds. One of the most composite elements of diversity is cultural background that plays a big role in employee expectations, motivation and overall satisfaction (West and The Welfare Law Essay, Frances 2007).
Age, education, gender, mental and physical ability are some other diversity factors that greatly impact the working environment. chinese model essay FROM COUNTRY TO CITY. Social Changes of China in Photography. Translated by John Yu Zou. The Chinese Reform has been underway for more than a quarter of a century. This historical social transformation is one in which all of Chinese society is The Welfare moving toward urbanization. In the context of such a massive makeover, Chinese documentary photography provides a sustained focus on social changes and unprecedented new social experiences. With support from much, Bates College, I organized this exhibition of photographs with works by seven contemporary Chinese photographers to illuminate the path that China has traveled in the past twenty-five years.
The exhibition is intended to illustrate changes in Chinese society to an American audience. The photographs by the painter Liu Xiaodi were taken in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the time, while he was an art student on fieldwork trips in Law Essay, China’s rural areas, he sketched and took photographs. As an art student, he was motivated to take the photographs as source material for his paintings. However, it is precisely because Liu did not receive formal schooling as a photographer that these images are free from some of the conventions of art photography. Instead of methodically orchestrating light and composition, he merely recorded what he saw through the Essay Concentration in Night by Elie Wiesel camera, so that upon his return to the city, he could scrutinize the images again and rework them into The Welfare Law Essay, his paintings. Without the photographer’s preoccupations, Liu’s work conveys a moment of transparency and simplicity. Village (series), 1978-1979. I place Liu at the beginning of the water exhibition because his images of Reform Chinese rural life retain the traces of a society bound by the social structure and lifestyles of the Maoist era. Agricultural production among Chinese peasants, the conditions and substance of nike pestle analysis country living, and the states of the mind and mutual relations among people all receive representation in Liu’s works.
The photographs that he originally took for his painting projects made him an accidental witness to a unique episode in Chinese history. Master of the House (series) Zhao Weidong, 16, Jiyvan County, Compared with Liu Xiaodi’s non-conceptual approach, Jiang Jian projects a distinctive formal and conceptual awareness in his portraits taken in Henan province during the The Welfare Law Essay 1990s. His technique has an pestle apparent and misleading straightforwardness. He positions peasant figures against The Welfare Reform images on the wall of the main room, the equivalent in Chinese rural architecture to the living room in an urban residence. In traditional Chinese living spaces, the central wall hanging in the main room expresses the values of Chinese patriarchy and is usually a large-sized painting or work of Social calligraphy. The Welfare Reform. The memorial tablets on the offering table express the importance of the lineage of the clan and the centrality of family ethics. Traditionally, the cultural signs found in these graphic and analysis calligraphic images impose symbolic restraint upon The Welfare Reform the behavior of family members. The main room is also the center of family activities including memorial services to ancestors, family conferences, and the crying game dil the reception of guests.
The area serves family members and constitutes the key venue where they interact with visitors. These photographs reveal that, in the context of contemporary Chinese social transformation, we find not only ancient traditions persist in the space of these main rooms, but political ideologies and various elements of popular culture have now entered the space and are competing against one another. Numerous political messages, images of Law Essay contemporary popular culture, and signs of traditional culture coexist within the same space. Today, interiors revealing traditional ritual activities are becoming more rare in China, especially in the coastal cities. They are being replaced by décor evoking Western-style living rooms. The Master of the German Concentration Camps by Elie Wiesel House series expresses the persistence of Chinese rural society and folk traditions in The Welfare Reform, an increasingly urban China. How do we understand the concurrence of the crying dil popular society, traditional culture, Confucian traditions, and political ideologies, and The Welfare their mutual impact on contemporary China? To what extent may we achieve accuracy in their description with the help of different theories and methodologies? Many of us are facing these questions. The unique approach of the Master of the House series provides some heuristic leads. Jiang Jian invites his subjects to adopt standing or sitting positions in a living space that is still richly resonant with meaning, and then within that format he records every visual detail of their bodily presence and their surroundings.
It is Essay about Concentration Camps in Night Wiesel through such detail that he displays the conditions of life among Chinese peasants, and through bold folk coloring he highlights the cultural taste in rural central China. At the same time, Jiang is also able to Reform Law Essay, render a scenario characterized by the coexistence of government ideologies, contemporary popular culture, and traditional culture. Of course, what we may further learn from the photographs is that the process of urbanization is analysis also one in which the values of urban living begin to be widely circulated and to take root in rural areas. Jiang Jian thus makes available to us a set of visual documents to The Welfare Reform, help understand the daily lives of Essay Chinese peasants in a specific geographic region. Besiege the Reform Law Essay City by the Country (series) Through the 1990s, Zhang Xinmin, from Essay Concentration Camps in Night Wiesel, Guangdong province, was engaged in a colossal visual project: Besiege the City by the Country: The Long March of Chinese Peasants to the City . This project consisted of three. parts: Village and The Welfare Law Essay Small Town Life , To the City , and The City . Besiege the City by the crying game, the Country (series) However, for peasant workers, the prospects for life and The Welfare Law Essay work in the city have not been good. The challenges they face in the cities far surpass finding adequate food and shelter. Cities and their social structures have also not been prepared enough, in either material or psychological terms, to welcome peasant workers. Even though the cities and their traditional residents have grown dependent upon the services of peasant workers, the latter are often subject to ill treatment. Zhang’s photographs reveal the urban survival techniques of Chinese peasants and their gradual transition toward their new roles as city dwellers.
The moments he captures forcefully convey the details of peasant life in the city, whether it is the acts taking of pictures for identification cards, which is the first step toward finding a job in the city, or the pin-ups of voluptuous women and the blown-up images of a Chinese banknote decorating their mosquito-netted bunks. Zhang Xingmin’s photographs remind us that in the process of urbanization, peasant workers have come to constitute a key component of contemporary Chinese urban life. Their living and working conditions in the cities should be acknowledged as a part of China’s social reality, and a part of China’s urban culture. Through his photographic eye, Zhang gives detailed representation to their ordeals in the urban environment. Shanghailanders (series), 1992-1995. While the speed of social change no doubt left an indelible impact on the values and lifestyles of peasants, it also profoundly reshaped the ideas and daily lives of urban dwellers. Beginning in the early 1990s, the Shanghai photographer Lu Yuanmin spent ten years producing the series Shanghailanders . With his highly personal perspective, he brought forth images of Shanghai urbanites assaulted by profound economic change. At the espionage and sedition ww1 center of Lu Yuanmin’s photographs is a cohort of Shanghai residents who maintained their habitual ways of living on the eve of radical upheavals in Chinese society. The subjects of the Shanghailanders series are those who remained unconcerned with changes in The Welfare, their external world.
For a long time, this social group received almost no attention in espionage and sedition acts, Chinese media and The Welfare Reform Law Essay press. They were not the soldiers, workers, and peasants glorified in acts ww1, government propaganda, nor those “contemporary heroes” who responded positively to Reform Law Essay, the new economic policies from above and actively engaged in commerce when the Essay about German Concentration Camps by Elie Wiesel society moved toward a market economy. Law Essay. These were instead the people left behind by their own times. Like Zhang Xinmin’s peasant workers, these Shanghai urbanites were largely neglected by mass media. But unlike the peasant workers caught in Zhang’s gritty images, Shanghai’s residents asked for neither the society’s attention nor its assistance. Water The Environment. They were a self-sufficient lot. At some level these Shanghailanders represent the majority of the population in the metropolis, urban residents who stayed largely outside public discourse. In terms of social background, Lu belongs to the same culture as his sitters. His photographs reveal a strong sense of identification with his subjects. Reform Law Essay. In these images independent, self-possessed Shanghailanders receive the deepest of nike pestle sympathy from the artist, but the particulars of their living environments also become subjects of The Welfare Reform Law Essay exquisite description.
In this series, the Shanghailanders appear willing to lose themselves in times that have passed. From their reserved and somewhat defiant manners, we may appreciate the complicated psychological reaction of a particular group to radical social transformation. The stillness of their gestures and positions contrasts dramatically with the violent and unpredictable social mobility within Chinese society at the time. Essay. Through Lu’s lenses, they serve as a static point of reference to observe and consider drastic social changes. Shangai Sketch (series), 2002. These were distinctive for the employment of what photographers call the nothing “optic unconscious.” Zhou seeks to render the reality of Shanghai in a style that straddles documentary record and The Welfare Reform Law Essay personal viewpoint. He does so by gathering a large number of photographic details of everyday life in the city. He also juxtaposes graphic symbols of very different significance within the.
same frame to and sedition acts, provoke associations regarding the passage of time. The New Residences of Reform Law Essay Luoyang series, created by Luo Yongjin in the 1990s, addresses an ancient Chinese capital of six different dynasties. Nike. Luoyang is not a typical modern city, and the images evoke a “pre-modern” urban architectural style. Reform. Depicting contemporary Chinese residential buildings of nike pestle extraordinary solidity and power, the Law Essay photographer articulates a deep-seated Chinese architectural aesthetic and Essay spatial consciousness. By way of stark visual reduction, these works bring together the architectural aspects of Chinese residential construction and the reductive nature of Western modernist architecture, even though the similarity comes across as rather crude. The aggressive architectural surfaces in the images stand in The Welfare Reform, contrast to espionage acts, the clusters of The Welfare Law Essay skyscrapers in the coastal cities, and are evidence that urbanization in much ado about scenes, the Chinese interior follows a different pattern from the Law Essay coast.
New Residences of Luoyang (series) Such works by Luo provide a meaningful point of departure for an understanding of the relationship between architecture and urban life and development in interior Chinese cities, as well as the limited aesthetic resources of Chinese city dwellers in these areas. Nike Pestle Analysis. After Luo began working in The Welfare Reform, Shanghai, his collage-style, grid-partitioned works singularly expressed the modern city’s endless expansiveness and self-duplication. In the recent publication, Research Report on nike pestle analysis Contemporary Chinese Class (Lu Xueyi editor, Shehui kexue wenxian chubanshe, Beijing, 2002), Chinese sociologists redefined the social classes in Reform Law Essay, China. According to this model, Chinese society now may be divided into ten classes. The leading classes of the Maoist era, the industrial workers and peasants, are ranked eighth and ninth, posited above only the much nothing scenes tenth class, made up of the unemployed and semi-unemployed.
According to this scheme industrial workers and peasants are no longer the decisive forces propelling social progress in The Welfare Law Essay, China. The “masters” of Chinese society in espionage and sedition, Maoist times now define the lowest strata of the social hierarchy. Heaviness of Industry (series) At a time when working-class existence is increasingly marginalized and workers’ images appear with ever decreasing frequency in The Welfare, China, Zhou Hai’s Heaviness of Industry project refocuses our attention on the life and working conditions of industrial workers who have been irretrievably remade into much ado about, the society’s “silent majority.” Zhou’s documentary project began in 1997 and is, according to him, still ongoing. Reform. In his own writing, he makes it clear that the motive in taking these pictures is to draw more peoples’ attention toward what is hidden behind industries, toward the labor and much nothing subsistence of the workers.
His images are intended to call attention to the human component of the abstract notion of industry. He wants to demonstrate the heaviness of industry as supported by these silent human figures, a heaviness borne by the real members of the working class. While the images in The Welfare, the Heaviness of Industry series strive to show the workers’ labor and subsistence in physical terms, they also expose the drift of the working class as a whole from the center of in Night Chinese society to its peripheries. The Heaviness of Industry series catalogs a number of raw moments in workers’ operational routines from a rich variety of perspectives. Zhou’s images do not aestheticize the laborers’ physical hardship, nor do they present sensational characterizations of human tragedy. Neither singing praise to modernization nor reflecting upon the negative consequences of the process may be as important as providing a site for an extensive social appreciation of the material experiences of “industry,” of the persons who are engaged in industrial production, of the relationship between the human body and The Welfare Reform Law Essay work, of the value of work to the entire society. The industrial workers in Zhou’s pictures embody such awkwardness in pestle, the most direct terms. These works do not excessively elaborate upon Reform Law Essay the experience itself. Rather, they introduce us to the complicated psychological states — a mixture of pride, perseverance, loss, and helplessness — with which the the crying game dil workers react toward the complexities of the historical moment. By weaving together subliminal settings and intimate depictions, Zhou takes his subjects away from the Maoist myths handed down from the past and returns them to their actual condition and Reform salvation.
From the documentary works by these Chinese photographers, we may conclude that there is a parallel between the growth of Chinese documentary photography and changes in Chinese society. The appearance of works with a distinct social vision bespeaks of the and sedition acts beginning of a process in which Chinese photography is emerging from the constraints of state ideologies. Photographers are taking individual critical stances toward the reality of society. The cameras in the photographers’ hands are tools to record dramatic transformation and day-to-day social experience while they articulate a personal worldview.
