1984 essay language Written February 27, 2000; Modified May 9, 2000. If you quote or paraphrase from my essay, please give me due credit. Language as the Website, #147;Ultimate Weapon#148; in Nineteen Eighty-Four. George Orwell, like many other literary scholars, is interested in the modern use of the English language and, in particular, the abuse and misuse of English. He realises that language has the power in politics to mask the truth and mislead the public, and he wishes to on The Impact of Advertising on Consumer Purchase increase public awareness of this power.

He accomplishes this by Website Essay placing a great focus on Newspeak and the media in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four . Essay On The In Life! Demonstrating the repeated abuse of language by the government and by the media in his novel, Orwell shows how language can be used politically to deceive and manipulate people, leading to Review Essay a society in daz for zoe, which the people unquestioningly obey their government and mindlessly accept all propaganda as reality. Language becomes a mind-control tool, with the ultimate goal being the destruction of will and imagination. As John Wain says in his essay, #147;[Orwell#146;s] vision of 1984 does not include extinction weapons . . . He is not interested in extinction weapons because, fundamentally, they do not frighten him as much as spiritual ones#148; (343). Paul Chilton suggests that the language theme in Orwell#146;s novel has its roots in the story of the Tower of Babel (2). When God destroys the Towel of Babel, the Review, civilizations which have contributed to the construction of the Tower suffer ever-after from the Curse of Confusion.

The Curse both makes languages #147;mutually unintelligible#148;, and alters their nature so that #147;they no longer lucidly [express] the Types of Love Essay, nature of Review Website, things, but rather [obscure] and [distort] them#148; (Chilton, 2). Orwell#146;s Newspeak , the ultra-political new language introduced in Nineteen Eighty-Four , does precisely that: it facilitates deception and manipulation, and its purpose is to restrict understanding of the real world. Chilton also suggests that a corollary to this is that #147;each post-Babel language [becomes] a closed system containing its own untranslatable view of the world#148; (2). Certainly, the daz for zoe, ultimate aim of Newspeak is to enclose people in an orthodox pseudo-reality and Website Essay, isolate them from the real world. Whereas people generally strive to expand their lexicon, the government in Nineteen Eighty-Four actually aims to cut back the Newspeak vocabulary. One of the who wrote, Newspeak engineers says, #147;[we#146;re] cutting the language down to the bone . . . Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year#148; (55).

By manipulating the language, the government wishes to Review Essay alter the public#146;s way of thinking. This can be done, psychologists theorise, because the words that are available for the purpose of communicating thought tend to influence the way people think. The linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf was a firm believer in Types exposed Night, this link between thought and Essay, language, and he theorised that #147;different languages impose different conceptions of reality#148; (Myers 352). So when words that describe a particular thought are completely absent from a language, that thought becomes more difficult to Impact think of and communicate. For the Inner Party, the goal is to impose an orthodox reality and make heretical thought (#145;thoughtcrime#146;) impossible. #147;In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible,#148; explains the Newspeak engineer, #147;because there will be no words in which to express it#148; (55). By design, Newspeak narrows the range of thought and shortens people#146;s memories. It is therefore ideal for Review of a a totalitarian system, in which the Types of Love in Twelfth Essay, government has to Essay rely on a passive public which lacks independent thought and which has a great tolerance for mistakes, both past and present. #147;To expand language is to expand the ability to Essay In Life Are Free think,#148; says Myers (353).

Conversely, to restrict language, as with Newspeak, is to restrict the range of thought. Chilton identifies the specific features of Newspeak that help restrict thought: #147;reduced complexity, few abstractions, and no selfreference#148; (37). Such narrowed public thought is what the Inner Party prefers, because a public that lacks the ability to think vividly poses less of of a Essay, a threat than one that can readily criticise the government and defend itself from harm. However, an interesting consequence of exposed, this narrowed thought is that the public#146;s memory is also effectively shortened. Essay! #147;The Inner Party [deprives] people of their own words and in so doing, deprives them of memory#148; (Lewis and Moss 51). After O#146;Brien forces Winston to the wasteland embrace Ingsoc, for instance, Winston#146;s imagination decays and he #147;[can] no longer fix his mind on any one subject for more than a few moments at a time#148; (301). Winston, like the majority of the of a Essay, public, suffers when he is robbed of his words and thoughts. Consequently, #147;memory, with its attendant richness and variety, atrophies#148; since #147;memories die when they go unrehearsed in words#148; (Lewis and Moss 51).

Given that Newspeak is such a politically-motivated language, why does the public in who wrote the wasteland, Nineteen Eighty-Four accept it? After all, the Party is Review of a undertaking a project of monumental proportions: they are trying to une vendetta analyse completely replace a common language (English, or #147;Oldspeak#148;), and of a, one would expect great opposition to such a plan. The Party is able to achieve this by again employing psychological tactics. Instead of forcing the public to use Newspeak by Essay on The Impact of Advertising on Consumer law, the Party ensures that the public is immersed in the new language. Nobody is forced to read or write in Newspeak, but #147;its ubiquitous broadcast creates a pressure to employ it simply in Review, order to communicate economically#148; (Chilton 37). Orwell#146;s novel paints a nightmarish picture of situational irony examples, a totalitarian system gone to the absolute extreme, but it is a novel that is fundamentally about psychological control of the public. Of course, the Party does employ torture as part of its control regimen, but the psychological control tactics are the dominant ones in the novel. While physical punishment is difficult to administer, psychological tactics (manipulation of people through language) can be continuously applied to the general public without raising great public opposition or fear #151; and that is where its strength lies.

It is for this reason that #147;Newspeak rather than torture is planned as the way to Review erase thoughtcrime#148; (Stansky 88). However, while Newspeak is a very significant method of mind control through language, it is just a part of a greater Inner Party scheme. It is, in fact, the Party-controlled media in the novel that expertly uses Newspeak as well as other linguistic trickery to spread its propaganda and brainwash the public. The media is powerful as a tool for manipulation both because the public is widely exposed to it, and also because the public trusts it. The telescreens continuously shout bursts of news and propaganda throughout the day, and the people listen intently and cheer at #145;good news#146; (victories) and are driven to rage by #145;bad news#146;. The characters in Orwell#146;s novel are slaves of the media; they revere it as an oracle. When the telescreens initiate the Two Minutes Hate, for instance, the people are roused to a frenzy: #147;People were leaping up and down in Essay on The Impact, their places and of a Essay, shouting at the tops of their voices . . Who Wrote! . [a girl] had begun crying out #145;Swine! Swine! Swine!#146;#148; (16). Certainly, in Nineteen Eighty-Four , #147;[media information] does control some of the ways in which [people] think about and assess the world#148; (Lewis and Moss 47).

The Party is interested in masking the truth, and so the media manipulates language to present a distorted reality. As Orwell says in his essay Politics and Review, the English Language , #147;Political language . . . is who wrote designed to make lies sound truthful and Review of a Essay, murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind#148; (150). In the novel, these lies are quite obvious. For example, the media (controlled by the Party, of course) continually refers to the Ministries of Truth, Peace, Love, and Plenty. In reality, however, the Ministry of Truth is concerned with the falsification of records, and the Ministry of Peace deals with warfare. The Ministry of Love is #147;the really frightening one#148; (6) as it is essentially a place for the questioning and torturing of Types of Love exposed Essay, suspected criminals. The Ministry of Plenty makes up economic figures to convince the public that the Review Website, economy is in good shape, even though there are great shortages of all commodities due to the war. Although the irony in the titles is blatantly obvious, Orwell is maupassant making a point about how the media can use language to mask the Review Website Essay, truth. The totalitarian state of Oceania is in a constant state of Types exposed in Twelfth, war, and Review Essay, part of the maupassant analyse, Party#146;s ongoing struggle is to keep the Website, public satisfied with this warfare. If the public were dissatisfied, they would resent the shortage of food and other commodities and possibly rebel against maupassant the Party. The Party therefore has to Review Website Essay distract the public#146;s attention away from the negative side of examples, warfare, and they use the media to do this.

By using only language that carries neutral or positive connotations to talk about anything related to war, the media successfully soothes an otherwise resentful public. For instance, the media never reports on Essay the #147;twenty or thirty [rocket bombs] a week falling on London#148; (28), but rather inundates peoples#146; lives with good news about victories. Winston#146;s telescreen announces, #147;Our forces in South India have won a glorious victory. I am authorised to say that the action we are now reporting may well bring the Impact of Advertising on Consumer, war within measurable distance of of a Website Essay, its end#148; (28). Similar reports follow throughout the entire novel, constantly celebrating the capture of enemies and the conquering of new territories, but never admitting any kind of defeat. In many ways, the media is relying on the principle that a piece of the wasteland, information that is repeated often enough becomes accepted as truth. Winston, a particularly strong-minded individual, is continually amazed to see his friends and colleagues swallow the Review Website, lies that the media dishes out.

For this form of brainwashing (#145;Duckspeak#146;) to be effective, #147;you just say things frequently and people eventually understand and say it themselves#148; (Chilton 27). This brainwashing is done through the words of the telescreens, newspapers and Best Things Are Free, magazines. The media is skilled at engineering #145;truth#146; through language, and one of the most disturbing consequence of this developed in the novel is that the Review Website, Party has ultimate control over history. After all, language is the link to history. Winston#146;s job in the Ministry of of Love exposed in Twelfth Essay, Truth is to modify news items and other documents that in Review Website Essay, one way or another make the Party look bad. After he replaces an original document with the modified one, all the daz for zoe, originals are destroyed. Orwell describes the process: This processes of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets . . . Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to Review date. Daz For Zoe! In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the Review of a, needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on who wrote the wasteland record. Of A Website! (42) Lewis and Moss believe that #147;the tactic is to obliterate history so that centres of opposition cannot grow#148; (51).

Orwell shows us evidence that this tactic is working: even the main character, who knows exactly what is going on with the falsification of documents, has trouble recalling who Oceania is Essay Are Free really at war with at the present. It is either Eurasia or Eastasia, but Winston is not sure because the Website, Party keeps changing history. This nagging doubt eats away at Winston until he no longer knows what reality is; by the end of the novel, he is willing to accept the Party#146;s reality. Orwell#146;s novel asks the philosophical question: if all available evidence shows something to be true, is it not true? Winston struggles with this idea of Impact of Advertising Purchase, #147;Reality control#148; (37) as he works at Review of a Essay the Ministry of Truth. Essay On The Impact On Consumer Purchase! #147;The frightening thing,#148; Winston thinks to himself, #147;[is] that it might all be true. If the Party [can] thrust its hand into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened #150; that, surely, [is] more terrifying than mere torture and death#148; (36). One of of a Essay, Winston#146;s assignments is to invent a biography of a fictional soldier named Ogilvy, so that he can be honoured by Big Brother in a public address. After writing the description of Ogilvy#146;s life, Winston marvels at how #147;once the act of forgery [is] forgotten, [Ogilvy will] exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar#148; (50). Essay In Life Are Free! As well as altering the past by manipulating written language, the Party has an ingenious plan to break the link with the real past by introducing a language barrier.

When #147;all real knowledge of Oldspeak [disappears] . . . the whole literature of the past will have been destroyed#148; (56). After a few generations, when people are no longer capable of of a, decoding information from the past, there will no longer even be a need to censor the history that has the potential for breeding unorthodox ideas #151; it will be completely out of the public#146;s reach. Thus, the manipulation of language and text not only effects the present, but also the past and future in more than one way. A Party slogan in the novel reads, #147;Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past#148; (37). Orwell#146;s novel is extreme, but it is not necessarily a prediction of the future. Daz For Zoe! Rahv believes that the book#146;s #147;importance is mainly in of a Website Essay, its powerful engagement with the present#148; (183).

Indeed, politicians have used written language to manipulate history both in the past and present. There was much distortion of history during the Stalinist era, #147;when such standard works of misinformation as the Soviet Encyclopaedia changed constantly with the party line, so that in successive editions Trotsky was first the daz for zoe, hero of the Civil War, then an agent of the Mensheviks, and Review of a Website, the western powers#148; (Woodcock 177). Patrick Wright suggests that the who wrote the wasteland, issue is still very much alive in the late twentieth century, citing as an example #147;[the British Secretary for Review of a Education, who] refused a number of proposed syllabus systems for the teaching of situational, history in schools, finding them insufficiently assiduous in their promotion of the mythical, rather than simply historical, values of national unity and pride#148; (111). Equally alive today is the fear that politicians and the media abuse language to hide truth. Orwell gives examples of how politicians can twist words to deceive people in his essay Politics and the English Language : #147;Defenceless villages are bombarded from the air, the inhabitants driven out into the countryside . . . this is called pacification . Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry: this is called transfer of population or rectification of Review of a Website, frontiers #148; (148). Woodcock refers to the modern jargon-filled English used by une vendetta #147;newspaper editors, bureaucrats, radio announcers, and parliamentary speakers#148; who have, just as Orwell feared, a heavy #147;reliance on ready-made phrases#148; (92). Even more disturbing, in the twenty-first century we have now a rapidly growing, major industry based solely upon the manipulation of language and thought: advertising. Orwell#146;s novel carries a well-founded warning about the powers of language. It shows how language can shape people#146;s sense of reality, how it can be used to conceal truths, and even how it can be used to of a Essay manipulate history. #147;Language is one of the key instruments of Purchase, political dominations, the necessary and insidious means of the #145;totalitarian#146; control of reality#148; (Rai, 122).

While language in the traditional sense can expand horizons and improve our understanding of the world, Orwell#146;s novel demonstrates that language, when used in a maliciously political way, can just as easily become #147;a plot against human consciousness#148; (Rahv, 182). chien jaune resume Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune. Let's look at Le chien jaune, one of the first Maigrets, published in 1931, the year the series was inaugurated. Literally The Yellow Dog, it also appears in English as A Face for a Clue, Maigret and the Concarneau Murders, Maigret and of a Essay the Yellow Dog . I wonder how they came up with A Face for a Clue as the title for the first translation? Whose face was it that gave the of Love in Twelfth Essay clue, Emma's? As usual, there are some strange translations in the Sainsbury version.

Looking briefly at Chapter 1, for example, in the opening paragraphs Sainsbury adds a new line: The hotel was at the corner where the quay joined the Place Jean Jaurès. And when M checks for Review of a Website Essay strychnine in daz for zoe the Calvados bottle, in the Sainsbury translation there were no white grains to be seen, while in fact in the original French (and the Asher translation) , il . Review Of A. aperut quelques grains du poudre blanche, he . saw a few specks of white powder. I'd say you're best to stick with the Asher translation if you're not reading the Essay Things In Life Are Free French. Here's an enlargement of that area: I haven't located a good city map of Concarneau, but it would be interesting to follow the action on one from the Website 30s. Unfortunately, Guido de Croock hasn't done Le chien jaune on his Maigret's Journeys in France site yet, or I'm sure we'd have a wealth of detailed information about who wrote the wasteland this setting. Did the operation go well? Has the waitress been here long? She didn't go out last night? What's the matter? What makes you think#151;?

You always drink Pernod? Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 2. In the autumn of 1969, Professor Glanville Price of the University of Stirling set Le chien jaune for first year students to improve their French vocabulary, so at 8.30 every Tuesday morning we would sit in a seminar room while he quizzed us to of a Website, see whether we'd actually looked up the words we didn't know. He was a fierce little Welshman, and who wrote the wasteland woe betide you if you'd been lazy. However, I learned a lot from him, including the urban nature of the glottal stop (now widespread in Britain -- and elsewhere?), and how to Review of a Essay, pronounce the u in tu, which, if I remember correctly, involved blowing out a lighted match! I re-read Le chien jaune last year. It seems to me one of the most densely plotted of the Maigrets, with a lot to enjoy. Now I'll have to read it again! Richard Vinen's introduction is interesting, though you can hear the sound of political axes being ground. How right-wing was Simenon?

There is situational examples plenty of evidence which makes it seem likely that his sympathies did lie on the right, but at Review of a Website the same time his irreligious libertinism points to a rejection of Essay on The Best Things Are Free, his early influences. I suspect that Simenon was fairly apolitical, even to the extent of being politically naive. Pierre Assouline's biography, particularly when it deals with the Review Essay war years, supports this reading of his character. There are, however, a couple of points that need to be teased out. Firstly, le chien itself. Simenon describes it as recalling both le mâtin et le dogue d'Ulm . Asher translates this as both a mastiff and a bulldog, but the dictionaries I've consulted translate dogue as mastiff (perhaps dogue d'Ulm is a particular type of mastiff?) while mâtin is described as a hunting hound. In Britain, foxhounds and beagles are the most common type of hunting hounds, and no doubt in France they use all sorts of dogs for hunting, but surely not a bulldog? dogue Allemand, aka: dogue d'Ulm , dogue anglais, dogue danois. a dogue d'Ulm is apparently a kind of dogue Allemand. Sainsbury skirted the issue in his translation: . its large head had something of a mastiff about it. Secondly, Servières says he was directeur de la Vache Rousse à Montmartre . Asher translates this as the manager of the Red Cow.

This suggests that he ran a bar or perhaps nightclub, and while this might account for une vendetta Mme Servières' shady background, alluded to in Vinen's introduction, my dictionary gives a secondary meaning of directeur as 'editor'. Given that Servières works as a journalist, surely this is a better reading. Review Of A. The Red Cow might have been a magazine, perhaps one like the satirical and semi-pornographic magazines that Simenon contributed some many pieces to in his apprenticeship as a writer. Might the word red have political connotations? Or does La Vache Rousse contain a cultural allusion? Sainsbury apparently thought so too. He 'translated' this section as: For many years I ran a cabaret in Montmartre. The Vache Rousse #151; I dare say you know it.

Simenon set many of his books in seaside ports, and situational his descriptions are very atmospheric. He would of course have been very familiar with such settings from his sailing exploits, and his birthplace, Liège, on the Meuse, was itself a major port. The opening pages capture the scene with sensual intensity, using visual and aural imagery to present the scene vividly to the reader. In particular, the use of the present tense lends an almost cinematic immediacy to Review of a, these pages, as if we are witnessing events as they occur. I suspect that Simenon used this technique frequently. Finally, I was intrigued by the reference to maupassant, Pernod being described as l'imitation d'absinthe or mock absinthe. I did a little research and found that absinthe was banned in Review of a France in 1915 due to in Twelfth Night, fears about the Review of a Essay effects of wormwood and the immense consumption of the drink contributing to Types of Love exposed in Twelfth, social problems. The firm of Pernod-Fils (now Pernod-Ricard) closed down for five years before reopening with a wormwood-free recipe. I've only tasted Pernod once, and that was enough!

Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 3. Is this cute little puppy on the dust jacket of the Website Harcourt edition supposed to represent the maupassant analyse 'monster' that had everyone so upset? As far as La Vache Rousse is concerned, the Review punctuation issue did occur to on The Impact of Advertising on Consumer, me later, after I'd posted. In Chapter 3 when Maigret phones Le Phare de Brest (which Asher translates beautifully as the Brest Beacon), he asks to of a Essay, speak to the directeur , reinforcing the idea that Simenon used it in the sense of daz for zoe, editor. However, in Maigret's notes in Chapter 3, he refers to Servières as journaliste à Paris, sécretaire général de petits théâtres , which lends force to La Vache Rousse being one of those. Although Servieres is described as being proud of his journalism, he might have been trying to impress Maigret in another way when he introduced himself. I'll go along with La Vache Rousse being a petit theatre. Jerome has forwarded a link to a large detailed map of Concarneau. Here's a reduced version on which I've added an A to mark the of a Website Essay location of the situational Admiral Café, B for les Sables Blancs, the White Sands, where the Mayor's house and Dr. Michoux's was, and C for Cabélou Point, the old fort where Léon was camping. And from Review of a Website Essay here you'll find more maps of Concarneau, including the downtown area.

The Linda Asher translation was first published in the USA in 1987 by daz for zoe, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich as a hardback book in a dust jacket entitled Maigret and the Yellow Dog (ISBN 0-15-155564-8). In 1988 the Review Website same translation and title was published in une vendetta maupassant analyse the USA as a paperback with a mainly typographic front cover by Harvest/HBJ (ISBN 0-15-655157-8). This translation was reissued in Review of a 1995 in the USA by the same publisher with the maupassant analyse same title and ISBN, but with a more pictorial cover. In 2003 Penguin Books in the UK published this Maigret novel, but under the of a Website title The Yellow Dog, the translation being by maupassant, Linda Asher (ISBN 0-14-118734-4). The earlier translation by Geoffrey Sainsbury, in comparison with the of a Website Essay author's French text, has many additions, omissions and Night alterations. Linda Asher's translation is much closer to what Simenon has written, but at times is too clipped, too staccato. However her translation is the one to read to appreciate Simenon's narrative. Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 4.

In what year does it take place? I am rereading Le chien jaune, and the first sentence of the book is interesting : Vendredi 7 Novembre. Review Of A Website. Concarneau est désert. (Friday, November 7. Concarneau is une vendetta empty.) I wondered in Review Essay what year the action took place. An Excel spreadsheet provides an easy way to find all the 7th November Fridays in the 20th century. The possible years would be 1924 or 1930. There is also a 7-Nov-1913, but absinthe was still allowed at that time, as Roddy wrote. After 1930, the next Friday 7th November is 1941, and that is Best too late.

I think that we can safely say that the action is taking place at end of the year 1930. I looked at of a Essay previous discussions related to Maigret's age (by Forest and Drake) but did not see Le chien jaune in the list. If the Types of Love Night action took place in 1930 that would make Maigret 43 years old. In the age study, I saw that M Gallet died on June 27, 1930. Website. That's possible since in Le chien jaune Maigret had just been assigned to Rennes for Essay on The Things a month. He must have arrived in Rennes around the 7th October. 1930 was a busy year for of a Maigret! To complete the year study, the second sentence says it is onze heure moins cinq (10:45) and the third that c'est le plein de la marée (the tide is full - high tide). At www.concarneau.org/meteo you can input a date and get the tide schedule.

The 7 November 1930, the une vendetta tide was at its lowest at 11:23! Simenon used boats a lot and must have known from Review of a Website books the tide schedules. Was he correct? And here's another element to date the story: in Chapter X, Maigret asks about what happend four or five years before to maupassant analyse, the boat La Belle-Emma and Léon tells in his story that everyone at that time was smuggling alcohol. In the USA, Prohibition was from 1919 to Website Essay, 1933 #151; that would make the year 1930 a good one, as Léon's arrest would have taken place in daz for zoe 1925: during Prohibition.

The other possible date, 1924, would have made the arrest of Léon in 1919, just at the start of Review, Prohibition. Could it be possible? One last point. Today in France, the 11th November is a bank holiday for the end of the Types exposed in Twelfth first World War: l'arministice , Armistice Day. In the book, as the story spreads over 5 or 6 days, we should see Tuesday the 11th and have some celebration, but nothing is mentioned in Review Essay the story.

I do not know when the 11th November became a bank holiday in France, perhaps after 1924 or 1930. That could allow us to daz for zoe, choose which year #151; 1924 or 1930 #151; is the best possible year for the book. The image is a tourism poster for Concarneau from 1930. Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 5. Chapitre 2 #151; Le docteur en pantoufles. Maigret teases Leroy on Website Essay his scientific methods; Leroy thinks Maigret ignorait la valeur des investigations scientifiques. I think the Forum has looked at daz for zoe this before, but I was interested to read (in Patrick Marnham's biography, The Man who wasn't Maigret ) that Simenon himself had attended lectures on forensic science: In later life Simenon denied that he had ever done any serious research into police methods before writing his Maigret books, apart from spending the odd afternoon with some friends in the Paris CID. In fact in 1920-21 the young reporter enrolled as an extra-mural student and attended a series of lectures at Review the University of Liege on the new science of forensics. Simenon's attendance . would have made him, for a brief period, better informed than many policemen. (Marnham, pp 59-60) Obviously he felt that the interest in novels arises from who wrote characters rather than from clues, unlike many of his contemporaries or indeed some present-day crime novelists.

No one would read Agatha Christie or Patricia Cornwell for their human interest. With regard to Review Website Essay, the political ideas in Richard Vinen's introduction to the new Penguin edition, the pharmacist who analyses the poisoned bottles would like to situational, blame it on anarchists. Does anyone know how active anarchists were in the 1920s and 30s in France? Were they responsible for outrages like poisoning the Review drinks of the daz for zoe bourgeoisie in towns like Concarneau, or is Simenon indulging in a little social satire? (By the way, I'd agree with Jerome's placing of the novel in 1930; also, Vinen makes the point that there is no reference as expected to Armistice Day in the novel.) I like the descriptions of the half-built houses and hotel on Michoux's plots of land, as well as of the Website false elegance of Michoux's house. A small puzzle: Michoux is who wrote a doctor, but people interested in buying his plots are directed to Monsieur Ernest Michoux. Essay. Maigret says in his notes on the case that Michoux and his mother are trading on dead husband's name, but I don't think that fully explains it. I'd never fully realised the importance of being able to tutoyer in French until I compared the French and English versions of Essay, Maigret's conversation with Emma in this chapter: By referring to Emma as tu , Simenon conveys the concern and sympathy Maigret feels for the girl, but this is Review of a Website lost, or at least less visible, in the translation; maybe the translator could have put in my dear to compensate.

Maigret asks the situational irony examples young police officer who captured the giant of a man what people think about the Review of a Website arrest of Dr Michoux. He replies that the ordinary people aren't too concerned, might even be pleased because he was part of the crowd who drank too much, treated the the wasteland town as if they owned it and exploited poor young women. The middle-class people are, however, appalled. Maigret's sympathies are always with the underdog, the lower class, though he himself, as the son of an estate manager who served an of a Website aristocrat, might be said to be bourgeois and he leads a bourgeois existence. Simenon seems to daz for zoe, an extent to have shared these sympathies, though of course he himself became very wealthy (and of course acted on occasion like Michoux and his associates). As Assouline states in the opening chapters of his biography, Simenon hated the Website Essay social attitudes of the Christian Brothers whose school he attended, especially their peculiar penchant for holding the state schools up as a bogeyman and for harping on class divisions. Who Wrote. This may well have been the of a Website leavening of a powerful conviction that never left him: that humility is the greatest of all human values. Daz For Zoe. (Assouline pp 4-5). Simenon indeed seems to Review of a, have despised the high-born and the rich. In Maigret Meets a Milord, he portrays the Essay on Consumer English Lord as a dissolute brute, and later, in Maigret and the Millionaires, for example, he shows them as leading empty, meaningless lives. Towards the end of his life, Simenon seems to have deliberately eschewed the trappings of wealth, putting his valuables into storage and moving from his Epalinges mansion to live very simply and humbly in a small shady house in a quiet street. Assouline asserts that this was the final demand of the anxiety and insecurity that had never left him: a house, a neighborhood, and furniture as cramped and ugly as those of his childhood. (Assouline, p386)

While accepting this as likely, I wonder if another reading is not possible: that having experienced everything to excess, and finding little of value, Simenon finally chose the most simple existence possible. In the exhibition in of a Website Liege last year there was short but very touching video clip which showed an old and feeble Simenon returning to his home from a walk. As he enters, his companion Teresa tenderly helps him take off his coat. Simenon looks distracted, unwell, tired. This extraordinary man, who has experienced more in his lifetime than perhaps any other of who wrote, his generation, is now almost completely dependent on the love and care of his sole companion. Nothing else matters. Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 6. 1/15/04 #150; Simenon, Concarneau, and the Yellow Dog. In the of a Website latter part of 1930, Simenon was moving around on the waterways of France, south of Paris, in his boat the Ostrogoth , with his wife Tigy, their maid/cook Boule (Henriette Liberge) and their dog, a Great Dane, called Olaf. This way of situational examples, life had started in Paris during the spring of 1929 and was to last until October 1931 when Simenon sold the boat at Review Website Ouistreham (Calvados) in daz for zoe Normandy. During the Review of a Essay whole two and a half years of the trip Simenon was writing novels and short stories under pseudonyms, as well as those first, mainly, Maigret novels under his own name.

It was a transitional period, completing contracts for his publishers of popular novels and who wrote building up a reputation as a writer of of a Website, works for which he is Types Essay now famous. Some of the writing was done on board, but at Review Essay times finding this unsatisfactory, he would moor his boat and find some temporary accommodation. During November and December 1930, Simenon rented part of the villa Ker-Jean, 11-15 Avenue des Sables-Blancs, northward along the coast from Concarneau (Finistère) in Brittany. Here he wrote the Maigret novel Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien (The Crime of situational, Inspector Maigret / Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets), and some of the work that was published under pseudonyms. Whilst living there, Simenon, Tigy, Boule, with their dog Olaf, explored Concarneau and Review Website Essay its environment, which gave the author plenty of information about this town to use as the setting for two novels, Le Chien Jaune and Les Demoiselles de Concarneau , the in Twelfth Night latter a non-Maigret work written in 1935 and translated under the title of The Breton Sisters . Also the author took a number of Review Essay, photographs of the town, which are now in the Fonds Simenon in Liège. Both novels are set in the month of November, which is precisely the time of year the author experienced whilst living in the area. Simenon used some of the local names in both novels. The villa in which they were staying was at Sables-Blancs, the location of the homes of the mayor and Ernest Michoux in the The Yellow Dog . The owner of the villa Ker-Jean, a jeweller, was M. Daz For Zoe. Albert Gloaguen, who had an address at 10, Quai d'Aiguillon, Concarneau. Website Essay. In the Breton Sisters a family's name is Gloaguen who live on the Quai d'Aiguillon, and this quayside is also mentioned in The Yellow Dog . (Erroneously Simenon spells it Quai de l'Aiguillon). Are Free. The Café de l'Amiral also features in both novels, as does the name Guérec. Also it is Essay reasonable to assume that including a dog as part of the storyline was influenced by Simenon having his own Great Dane with him.

In Paris on the 20th of February 1931 at the nightclub La Boule Blanche in who wrote the wasteland Montparnasse, Simenon and his publisher Fayard launched the Review of a Essay two Maigret titles M. Analyse. Gallet, décédé (The Death of Monsieur Gallet / Maigret Stonewalled) and Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien (The Crime of Inspector Maigret / Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets), with the Review of a Website spectacular Bal Anthropométrique, an all night event, when guests were fingerprinted on daz for zoe entry. Soon after this, in March 1931, the author took his boat along the river Essonne, south of Review of a, Paris to Guigneville, near La Ferté-Alais, where in the Château/Hôtel La Michaudière he wrote Le Chien Jaune (A Face for a Clue / Maigret and the Concarneau Murders / Maigret and the Yellow Dog /The Yellow Dog). But before he started writing the Maigret novel he explored the main plot in the form of a short story which he entitled Sing-Sing ou La Maison des Trois Marches (Sing-Sing or The House with the Three Steps). This short story was published in the weekly magazine VU, N. 158, 25 March 1931, illustrated with photographs by Germaine Krull. Being an astute businessman, Simenon frequently had many of his short stories and novels published in daz for zoe magazines or newspapers before they came out in book form. Website. This meant that his work reached a wider reading public, as well as bringing in additional revenue. Possibly, in this case, he might have wanted to put down his idea for the main plot quickly, to gauge how it would pan out as a novel, and Essay on The Best In Life Are Free how Maigret, who does not appear in the short story version, could be worked in to investigate. In this short story, the plot is the Review Essay same as the novel, one of betrayal, but there are fewer characters and their names are different, and there is no dog. Une Vendetta. Also there is no mention of the name of the town, although it is obviously by the sea.

Part of the storyline takes place in of a Essay the Grand Hotel, which has been in Concarneau for some considerable time. This forty-roomed hotel is located at 1, Avenue Pierre-Guéguin, which butts on to the Quai d'Aiguillon and une vendetta maupassant analyse the three windows of its end façade overlooks the Place Jean Jaurès. In the novel, which Simenon wrote soon after the short story, it is named the Hôtel de l'Amiral (the Admiral Hotel). Basically having explored the main plotline in the short story, Simenon expands his idea into the novel, giving himself room to establish more characters with twists and turns in Review Website the narrative that brings in petty town jealousy, enmity, posturing and rivalry. Into the vividly portrayed atmosphere, conjured up both by the natural elements and the tension generated by certain individuals, he brings Maigret. Essay Are Free. The latter, at times, at his most brusque, not suffering fools lightly, dismissing a person or situation with a blunt oath, mentally, if not also physically, feels his way to the truth. His sympathy lies with only certain of the inhabitants, including the yellow dog of the French title that wanders through most of the novel like a mysterious symbol. The printer's date in the first edition of the novel Le Chien Jaune , published by Fayard, is April 1931, and it would have been put on sale soon afterwards. Chapter 2 ends: Maigret gave a start, not because of this news, but because he had just caught sight of the yellow dog, stretched out at Emma's feet. The connection between Emma and the dog's owner, Leon, is therefore present from the start. There is Review Essay also the back-story of Emma and Leon being engaged to be married until they are separated by Leon's voyage and subsequent arrest, for which Michoux and his associates are responsible. This novel is une vendetta analyse tightly plotted. On the day he began the first chapter, Simenon knew how it was going to Review, develop and how it was going to end. Perhaps some later Maigrets are more spontaneous, less planned, but I don't think a single one of situational irony, them is Review Website written in Essay on The Things In Life the way Simenon wanted Bresler to of a, believe.

Peter Foord's interesting and enlightening posting supports this idea that Simenon carefully prepared his books. Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 8. 1/21/04 #150; In the words of Simenon's biographers. I thought it would be interesting to cite what Simenon's major biographers and others have to une vendetta maupassant analyse, say about the works under discussion. I intend to Review Website Essay, look at Assouline, Marnham and Bresler first of all. Essay In Life Are Free. Stanley Eskin's critical biography is often cited, so I have ordered this (from Long Beach, Ca!), but I'll have to add that later.

Assouline first. The edition I've used is Simenon a Biography by Pierre Assouline, translated by Jon Rothschild, Chatto and of a Website Essay Windus, London, 1997: Between March and December of 1931, he followed up the daz for zoe first Maigrets with eight others -- Le Chien jaune (A Face for a Clue), La Nuit du Carrefour (The Crossroads Murders), Un Crime en Hollande (A Crime in Holland), Au Rendez-vous des Terres-Nuevas (The Sailors' Rendez-vous), La Danseuse du Gai-Moulin, La Guinguette a deux sous (The Guinguette by the Seine), Le Port des brumes (Death of a Harbour-master), and Review Website Essay L'Ombre chinoise (The Shadow in the Courtyard) -- plus one novel, Le Relais d'Alsace (The Man from Everywhere) , in which the inspector does not appear. And he continued his frenetic lifestyle, dividing his time between the Ostrogoth and Essay Impact of Advertising the Chateau de la Michaudiere in Guigneville-sur-Essonne. It was his usual pace. Bresler takes up the Website Essay story (in The Mystery of Georges Simenon by on The Impact of Advertising on Consumer Purchase, Fenton Bresler, Stein and Day, New York, 1985): In December 1931, within ten months of the launching of the first two Maigret books, Simenon sold the Ostrogoth . and rented a sumptuous villa called Roches Grises at Cap d'Antibes. There were not more than about a dozen villas built there at the time and in of a Website Essay winter the situational irony examples place was almost deserted. [Isn't this curiously reminiscent of the plots of land sold by Website, Dr Michoux in Le Chien jaune ? RC] The only other inhabitant was the daz for zoe old Aga Khan who would wave at the soon-to-be-millionaire author as the two of them took their regular morning walks beneath the pine trees. In the of a three months that Simenon was at Roches Grises, he wrote three Maigret novels and worked on Essay of Advertising on Consumer Purchase the scenarios of two Maigret films: La Nuit du Carrefour with Jean Renoir and Review Essay Le Chien jaune (The Yellow Dog) with Jean Tarride. The fate of the two films proved somewhat amusing.

La (sic) Chien Jaune was a considerable commercial success but an artistic disaster, with the director's father, Abel Tarride, a veteran of the stage, completely miscast as Maigret and giving a far too-overripe performance as the essentially humanistic and unflurried detective. In contrast, La Nuit du Carrefour sank without trace at the box-office but has now become a cult Jean Renoir film and is shown to intellectually smart cinema clubs throughout the maupassant analyse world. As brilliant a director as Jean-Luc Godard has called it the only great French detective film ever made. Assouline, however, asserts: Le Chien jaune and La Nuit du carrefour were commercial failures.

For that Simenon blamed the producers, but he was also unhappy with the entire profession, including adapters, screenwriters, and Review Essay directors (except his friends, of course). He was especially irate about the examples critics' claim to define the canons of the detective film. He had written his Maigrets by violating imperatives of of a Website Essay, exactly this kind, and daz for zoe he now railed against the conventions: #x201C;There are rules, it seems, rules of the genre, which some seek to transgress and Website others obstinately defend#x2026;. To begin with, there is no such thing as a detective novel, nor a detective film. And there is no rule of the genre, and no formula either#x2026;. There are good and bad films. #x2026; The audience doesn#x2019;t give a f--- about rules. And they#x2019;re right!

All the situational examples audience wants is a film that holds their interest all the Review Website way through, and they don#x2019;t care how their interest is held#x2026;. If Le Chien jaune and La Nuit du carrefour are failures, the fault lies not with the people who made them but with the daz for zoe people who paid for them. Review. Or rather, it lies with the rules and with the idiots who issued them#x201D;. In 1933 Simenon was sued for libelling a widow Mercier, a hotelkeeper, in one of his African novels, Le Coup de lune . The case was dismissed, although there was evidently some guilt on Simenon's side, but, as Assouline says: There is a slight irony here, for, as Assouline writes: Marnham makes an interesting connection between Simenon#x2019;s experiences during the on The Best Are Free German occupation of Liege and his novels: Later Marnham writes of Simenon leaving Lakeside to of a Website Essay, return to Europe: Maigret of the Month: Le chien jaune - 9.

1/26/04 #150; In the words of Simenon's biographers - 2. Stanley G. Eskin's Simenon: A Critical Biography (1987, McFarland and Company, Inc., Jefferson, NC) is very interesting on the genesis of Maigret and on the development of the detective story from the 19th century onwards. He writes: Le Chien jaune , probably the fifth or sixth written in the wasteland the series, is an excellent example of early Maigret. Unlike Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien , the foreground action has considerably more interest than the background action. Of A Essay. Maigret's investigation in the little Breton port of Concarneau, terrorized by in Twelfth Night, an unknown criminal, is a masterpiece of Essay, ambiance (sic) , suspense and sharp character description; the Impact on Consumer Purchase explanation behind it all is implausible and grotesquely involuted. Simenon leads into the atmosphere and the foreground story with a terse style, verging sometimes on Essay the telegraphic. Friday 7 November. Situational. Concarneau is deserted. In front of him, in the basin, a coastal vessel which has taken shelter that afternoon. Website Essay. No one on daz for zoe deck.

Leaning by the cashier, a waitress. At a marble table, two men finish their cigars, sitting back, legs stretched out. A sort of stage-direction style. Frequent predicateless sentences, no less effective on Website Essay that account. Types In Twelfth Night Essay. The novel is rich in early examples of Simenon's atmosphere building, sometimes too specifically labelled as atmosphere: There was in Review Website Essay the cafe's atmosphere something gray, dull, that you couldn't put your finger on. [All translations are Eskin's own; they are technically and grammatically accurate, except for Leaning by the cashier: I prefer Linda Asher's reading, Leaning on the till, RC] By and maupassant large, though, Simenon builds up a vivid sense of the quality of the of a Essay town, the daz for zoe mood and sensibility of of a Essay, its denizens. A sense of rural sexual sordidness is pervasive, as well as small-town xenophobia and petty viciousness #151; as when townspeople throw stones at the hapless wounded dog of the title, while, in situational contrast, Maigret gently pats it. Individual corruption, as well as the Website town's disagreeable collective personality, are effectively echoed by the physical setting: Maigret looked through the window panes. It was no longer raining, but the streets were full of black mud and the wind was still howling violently. The sky was livid gray.

In contrast with the bad weather #151; almost intruding on une vendetta maupassant it #151; are bursts of Review of a Essay, good weather and of concurrent good humor, centering on Maigret but somehow spreading through the whole town: Maigret was in such a good mood that following morning that Inspector Leroy dared to maupassant analyse, follow him and chat . The sky seemed as if freshly laundered . Of A Essay. The horizon seemed vaster, as if the Essay Best Things Are Free celestial dome had been more deeply scooped out. The sea sparkled, punctuated by little sails that looked like the flags in a military map. If bad weather is an Review of a emblem of human turpitude and misery, good weather is a way, not so much of situational examples, counter-balancing it, as of getting a perspective on it. a way of wriggling momentarily into a Maigret-like serenity that embraces suffering and Review Website cruelty because it cannot neutralize them. Who Wrote The Wasteland. Figures of speech are infrequent, as usual in Simenon's style. When they occur, they are either perfunctory, or else quite striking, as this one, describing Maigret and an associate [why not Inspector Leroy? RC] observing from a rooftop the Website encounter between two young lovers [Emma and Leon RC] in a room some distance away: It was imprecise, as blurry as a film projected when the houselights have been lit. And something else was missing: noises, voices . Situational Irony Examples. Again like a film: a film without the music. One of the skills that Simenon developed as he escalated from a commercial to a more literary mode was to manipulate time, to move fluidly from present to past, to Review of a Website Essay, more distant past, and sometimes to daz for zoe, future.

In the early Maigrets, this is mostly a matter of flashbacks, usually towards the end, providing the Review of a Essay explanatory background action. In Le Chien jaune , he experiments with some subtleties. In the course of the opening foreground narrative, another level of foreground is une vendetta maupassant anticipated in dramatic juxtaposition: It was only at that moment that I had the feeling that something had happened, the of a customs office (sic) would testify during the inquest. As for Maigret himself, he is Essay Best Things In Life Are Free filling out his first-series personality. He still has his early brusque manner. F---ez-moi la paix! we find him shouting, using aggressive vulgarisms that he abandons later, and he has a rude way of staring at people without answering their questions.

His gruff heaviness is used deftly to Review Essay, dramatize his sympathy for the victimized young waitress, Emma: . He took her shoulders into his big paws and looked into her eyes at once gruffly and warmly. He still has his velvet-lapelled overcoat and his bowler hat, which he brushes on examples his sleeve. We find that he's already well-known, as he remains throughout his career: people constantly recognize him. Of A Website Essay. The famous Maigret method is both demonstrated and expounded. Simenon as author establishes the atmosphere which Maigret as detective immerses himself in, both drawing on situational irony examples their skills in their respective crafts.

The do-nothing aspect of the Maigret method #151; just sit back, observe, let it soak in of a #151; is laconically expressed: What do you intend to situational, do? I conclude from that . Of A Website Essay. Yes, of course . Only, for my part, I never conclude anything. Essay Are Free. As for of a the detective-story tradition, Le Chien jaune builds up an the wasteland impressive collection of suspects and brings them together for the denouement in the best golden-age manner. There is a hint of the American hard-boiled school in the background action, which has to Review, do with how Emma's young lover, Leon, was seduced and betrayed by irony examples, a corrupt group of local gentry in a murky bootleg-liquor (actually cocaine RC) operation across the Atlantic. Review Of A Website. And there is a touch also of the detective tradition's Gothic background in exposed Night Leon's hideout in an ancient, abandoned coastal fortification, with a hidden staircase under the walls (echoes of Arsene Lupin's Aiguille creuse). The quotes are all from pp87-95. Apart from the last point, where I would dispute that there is a hidden staircase: Maigret s'engagea dans un etroit escalier de pierre creuse a meme l'epaisseur du mur. Maigret started up the narrow stone stairway cut right into the wall. (Asher) Eskin makes several points that are worth expanding on.

For a start, what he terms a sort of stage-direction style owes more I think to the mise-en-scene of the screenplay. Since Simenon was engaged soon after this on Review Website screenplays for both Le Chien jaune and La Nuit du carrefour , I don't think it's fanciful to daz for zoe, believe that he would have a working knowledge of the techniques of writing for the screen when he wrote this novel. The first scene of Review of a Website Essay, Le Chien jaune , written, as I noted earlier, in of Love the present tense, would function perfectly well as the first scene of a film, with very few changes. The reference above to the scene between Emma and Review of a Leon unfolding in Types exposed in Twelfth front of Maigret and Leroy makes specific reference to Website Essay, silent films and has the same melodramatic quality. The use of flashback, which is crucial to the back-story of Leon, is, I think, essentially filmic. A study of what I would call Simenon's cinematic style would probably be interesting. Who Wrote. If nothing else, it might explain why so many of his works have been adapted for Review Website film and of Love television. Eskin's reference to Maigret's first-series personality relates of course to television. The descriptions of weather are of course one of the great pleasures of the Maigret novels.

Simenon does to Review of a Website Essay, some extent utilise the pathetic fallacy to mirror Maigret's changing moods, but again I think the descriptions belong more to Simenon's essentially visual, or rather, sensory imagination. We are made to share Maigret's joy in the first day of Purchase, Spring, or his exhaustion in the heat of Website, a Paris summer, or even the rain that seeps through his overcoat. Eskin refers to bad weather as an emblem of human turpitude and misery, but this is daz for zoe specifically linked to the villains in Le Chien jaune . Mostaguen falls into the mud when he is shot. Michoux's housing development looks sinister in the rain and the mud. But in Chapter 9, the weather turns fine, and Maigret is in of a good spirits because he is on situational irony his way to solving the mystery. Finally, Eskin's allusion to the detective story tradition of bringing all the suspects together for the unmasking of the of a Essay true villain is insightful, but it ignores the way in which Simenon subverts the tradition. In the Essay Impact of Advertising classic country house detective story, the detective (Poirot perhaps) would assemble everyone in the library (later Rex Stout would bring them into of a Website Essay, the brownstone on 35th Street), but where does Simenon bring his cast of suspects?

To a prison cell! I think this is meant to on The Best In Life, suggest that not only of a Essay, Michoux but all his associates #151; his mother, the journalist Servieres, aka Goyard, the mayor #151; all share the guilt. It is surely significant that Maigret leaves the cell with the only true innocents, Emma and une vendetta maupassant analyse Leon and enables them to Review of a Essay, lead a different, happier life elsewhere.

Los Angeles, along with New York, is Review Website Essay popularly seen as the prototypical make-it-or-break-it town for actors, where young thespians go to pursue their dreams at the risk of a long-term career in waiting tables. Its fitting, then, that L.A. is where I went to perform my university auditions, completing my application process and placing my academic future entirely in the hands of roughly a dozen program directors. The segment linked above, which was broadcast this morning on NBCs Today show, takes viewers behind the daz for zoe, closed doors of the Review of a Website, admissions process at Grinnell College in Iowa. Grinnell, which has received nearly 3,000 applications for an incoming freshman class of about 400, follows an intensive, holistic process similar to those used at une vendetta maupassant dozens of other selective (and in some cases fiercely competitive) colleges, both public and private. In an article just posted on Review The Timess Web site, I write about irony, how an Review Essay, influx of applications to American universities from une vendetta analyse China is Review of a Website being received in the admissions office at Grinnell College in Iowa. At Grinnell, for example, nearly 1 of every 10 applications for the freshman class that will be seated next fall is from China. In choosing which Chinese students to admit perhaps 15 out of a pool of more than 200 the admissions officers at Grinnell face an arguably harder task than in sizing up American applicants, which is tough enough. Its not just that half the Chinese applicants to Grinnell have a perfect score on who wrote the math portion of the SAT. One trend, though, does seem some obvious: the increase in applications reported by Columbia University (32 percent) and the University of Michigan (18 percent, as the Feb. 1 application deadline looms) would seem, at Essay Impact on Consumer least in part, to be a function of those institutions choosing to accept the Common Application this year for the first time. With that, the only other observation we will offer is that, yet again, the sluggish economy and of a Website, increasing cost of a college education appear to have done nothing to cool applicants interest in those institutions that, historically, have been among the most difficult to get into.
