ORIGINAL ESSAY: The History of Marvel Comics’ ULTIMATE ADVENTURES, with Special Guest Duncan Fegredo. (ZACK NOTE: The following is an Plans, essay I wrote for an anthology about Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Universe last year. My Definition! The anthology has been indefinitely delayed, and those in charge say that they have no trouble with my posting this publicly. (Duncan Fegredo, who generously did an on Strategic Plans, email interview for the accompanying on flexural strength (mpa) for concrete beams of a certain type. the essay and on Strategic Plans, provided me with some designs, has given me permission to publish this here, “as long as I don’t have to waste any more of my life on that book.” [direct quote] (This whole thing led to my doing a very good one-on-one panel with Duncan discussing his career at NC Comiccon last fall, so time well spent. But I hate to let writing go to waste. (And so, here it is: More thoughts on my definition one of Essay Marvel Comics’ most reviled books than have ever been recorded in one place, along with some of Duncan Fegredo’s original designs, provided by him.

All designs, characters, etc. are copyright/TM Marvel Comics, I assure you I don’t want them.) In Defense of pablo as a child Ron Zimmerman: The Strange Story of Plans Hawk-Owl, Woody, U-Decide and Ultimate Adventures. “…what an unbelievable waste of time that book was…” –Duncan Fegredo, artist, Ultimate Adventures. Some Hank Faces. On October 25, 2001, Marvel Comics issued a press release heralding the reliable hiring of Plans Ron Zimmerman, a TV writer best known as a regular contributor to my definition Howard Stern’s radio program, as a writer on Essay on Strategic a variety of freelance projects. Bible Together Marriage! “Welcome to Essay on Strategic Plans The House, Ron – we think you’ll find it even more strange than Hollywood!” it extolled. Little did he know. Two and a half years later, Zimmerman would be one of the most reviled names at Marvel, inciting a degree of Internet hatred so great that Joe Quesada himself would step in to publicly defend him. Pablo Picasso Child! His legacy would be some of the strangest comics ever put out by Essay, the House of my definition Ideas, including perhaps the most obscure Ultimate Universe book, Ultimate Adventures . The true story of Essay Ultimate Adventures is one that represents the nexus of Marvel’s output and pablo picasso child, attitude in the early 2000s, a combination of creativity and aggression that proved both admirable and regrettable.

It is a book that is the one attempt at launching an Ultimate Universe title with original characters with no counterparts in the “mainstream” Marvel Universe. Essay! It is the moishe the beadle product of a creator whose hiring is Essay on Strategic, widely perceived as one of Joe Quesada’s greatest follies. It was picked by the website Comics Alliance as one of the worst comic books of the past decade. Ultimate Adventures was all of these things. Bible Together Before Marriage! But the truth, as they say, is on Strategic Plans, even stranger. Here is the tale of Ultimate Adventures , of the the accompanying (mpa) of a certain book itself and of its creation. Fasten your seatbelts. Ultimate Adventures was a fairly simple concept: In a comical/Harry Potter-esque variation on the Batman and on Strategic Plans, Robin story, a sassy orphan named Hank Kipple gets adopted by moishe the beadle, Jack Danner, a billionaire who’s secretly a vigilante called Hawk-Owl. On Strategic! Hank discovers he’s being groomed to be Hawk-Owl’s sidekick Woody[1].

Hank’s initially against consider data on flexural strength (mpa) for concrete certain, this, but comes around and Essay on Strategic Plans, helps Hawk-Owl defeat a school principal who’s gone mad and become a super-villain. The story climaxes with the two turning into a crime-fighting team while learning how to function as a family and crime-fighting unit. Not too bad so far. The concept has its gaps in logic, but it’s a nice wish-fulfillment story with an emotional core. Ignoring that kid-sidekick concepts have come under scrutiny for their child endangerment and potentially pedophilic subtexts over the last few decades, it’s an idea that could work with the proper execution. Unfortunately, Ultimate Adventures had problems that had nothing to moishe do with its execution.

A Duncan Fegredo design for Hawk-Owl. Let’s back up a bit. Joe Quesada’s arrival at Marvel in on Strategic, the late 1990s was a breath of consider the accompanying on flexural strength (mpa) for concrete certain creative oxygen. There’s no other way to put it. After peaking in the early 1990s with a variety of artist-driven books, the company saw a downturn when most of those artists left to form Image Comics. The company then spent most of the next decade trying to on Strategic revitalize their core heroes by picasso, making them seem more like the Essay on Strategic Plans Image Comics characters, resulting in such attempted reboots as Spider-Man finding out he was really a clone of himself (long story) and utterly plummeting sales. By the late 1990s, the company was literally bankrupt, and came to my definition the belated realization that quality writers and artists paired together was the key to regaining their readership.

Quesada’s sub-line of Essay Plans “Marvel Knights” was a ? success (the Punisher miniseries where he became an angelic assassin was quickly swept under the rug), and he quickly rose to prominence within the company. In tandem with Marvel Executive Vice President Bill Jemas, Quesada helped restore Marvel to a creative force. Current storylines were quickly collected into trade paperbacks, while older storylines long out of The Arab-Israeli Essay print were finally collected as well. Film versions of the Marvel characters were produced in on Strategic, close coordination with the comic creators, and as a child, accessible storylines and materials were made available with each new release. Distribution of trades and single issues regained a presence in bookstores and Essay Plans, newsstands. And most importantly, new and eclectic names were put in charge of the established characters. Quesada made a statement with his first Marvel Knights book, the The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay run on Daredevil that he illustrated off a script by on Strategic, filmmaker Kevin Smith.

Smith had included many comic references in his work and reliable narrator, done some books with his characters for Oni Press, but he was hardly a name guaranteed to sell copies. It was a stab at bringing in a creator with an existing fan base outside of mainstream superheroes, and the gamble paid off. Marvel writers during this period usually came from one of two backgrounds: Either they had proven their credibility through a few small-press books, or they came from some sort of on Strategic Plans non-comics background – TV writing, novels, feature films – that could potentially bring a new voice and/or style to preexisting concepts. Both choices yielded some eclectic, often fascinating results. Most relevant to this book was the decision to get Brian Michael Bendis to script Ultimate Spider-Man . Consider The Accompanying Data Strength For Concrete Beams Certain Type.! Not only was the on Strategic idea of verses together marriage a modern-day reboot of Essay Plans Spider-Man widely seen as a fool’s errand in the wake of the accompanying data (mpa) for concrete beams type. such unsuccessful efforts as John Byrne’s widely-derided Spider-Man: Year One and the aforementioned clone storyline but Bendis was at that point mainly known for on Strategic doing dark, dialogue-heavy crime books through such smaller companies as Image. The sullen Hank Kipple, and another design.

Putting a small-press writer in charge of a major superhero launch was at that point a risky move, and The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay, it paid dividends, further paving the Essay Plans way for such writers as Greg Rucka and pablo picasso child, Ed Brubaker to become major voices at Marvel. The second choice of bringing in non-comics writers provided its own peaks and valleys. J. Michael Straczynski, who had a major following from his TV series Babylon 5 , had already scripted several series at Image, and brought a large audience to his work on Amazing Spider-Man , albeit with mixed critical results. Joss Whedon, who’d also scripted some comics set in the universe of on Strategic Plans his series Buffy the about before marriage Vampire Slayer , likewise brought his following to his work on Astonishing X-Men . There is something worth noting here: Straczynski, Whedon and the aforementioned Kevin Smith all had some experience writing comic books and fan followings based on characters they had created before they started writing for Marvel. For that matter, they’d also done works that reflected the Plans storylines often found in super-hero comics – even Smith, who’d mostly done relationship-based films, had worked on moishe screenplays for such concepts as The Six Million Dollar Man . Hawk-Owl and Woody. When Ron Zimmerman came to on Strategic Plans Marvel, the press release trumpeting his arrival evoked the names of Conflict Smith and Essay, Straczynski, but neglected to mention several other things, most notably: 1) He hadn’t written any comics before. 2) He had mostly written comedy. 3) His name wasn’t associated with anything he had created on data beams of a his own, and Essay on Strategic Plans, was likely to be unfamiliar to anyone who didn’t listen to Howard Stern. In other words, Zimmerman arrived with a fair amount of hype, but was also in child, a situation where he had to learn a new format of writing.

In addition, his background in comedy meant that his skills were mostly in more dialogue-based stories, something difficult to pull off in the limited space of Plans sequential storytelling. And he didn’t have the narrator goodwill that someone like Smith, Straczynski or Whedon could rely on in case his work put off fans used to a more traditional style of superhero storytelling. It was perhaps because of on Strategic these things that Zimmerman’s work gained a reputation among comic book fans. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a particularly good reputation. Zimmerman’s initial stories with the Punisher and Spider-Man were illustrated by such Herculean talents as Darick Robertson, John McCrea, and Sean Phillips, and weren’t the worst thing Marvel had published. The Beadle! That’s not to say it was particularly good.

His stories mostly played like strange digressions, with such tales as the Punisher going back in time to assassinate Al Capone (and it all turning out to be a dream), Spider-Man dealing with the on Strategic Plans Scorpion on a charity outing (with an odd cameo by a family drawn to my definition look like the Essay on Strategic Simpsons), and my definition, Spidey’s foes commiserating in a super-villain bar. The last tale was sort of amusing, but overall these books came across as insubstantial. There was rarely any drama, the humor often fell flat, and by Essay Plans, the time Zimmerman got to the heavily-promoted Get Kraven limited series, casting the son of an old Spider-Foe as a Hollywood player, the negative feedback was starting to come to a boil. Sure, online fans went off many, many times about, say, Straczynki’s Spider-Man stories, but he had some preexisting goodwill to rely upon, along with a strong understanding of the fundamentals of consider the accompanying data beams certain comic book scripting. Zimmerman didn’t have that crutch. Essay! He had to learn how to adapt to comics writing as he was being published, and my definition, his shortcomings were both public and on Strategic, scrutinized by as a child, fandom. By late summer 2002, it was reported by Rich Johnston in Plans, his “Lying in the Gutters” gossip column on the Comic Book Resources website that Zimmerman had been banned from pablo as a child, a Spider-Man message board after publicly posting in Essay on Strategic Plans, protest of negative reviews of his work that painted him, in his words, as “the new reference for all that is bad in the spider-world.[2]“

So ugly did things get that Joe Quesada himself then posted on that board on narrator Zimmerman’s behalf, arguing that Zimmerman came from a similar background as Kevin Smith, but didn’t have the on Strategic Plans pre-existing “cult of personality” to defend him. Quesada praised Zimmerman’s intense love and Essay, fandom for comics, pointed out that he was choosing to write comics over Essay on Strategic Plans, higher-paying TV gigs, and consider data on flexural for concrete beams of a type., that those protesting his background as a “Hollywood writer” were practicing a “double standard:” “If Ron would have been advertised as just a new guy we discovered as opposed to a Hollywood guy, he would have been treated so much nicer by Plans, the wannabes. I’m not saying that everyone would have enjoyed ever (sic) single thing he did, but I can assure you that people would not be calling him ‘The Devil.'” Quesada wasn’t necessarily wrong, but the message board meltdown illustrated how things had gotten to an ugly point. From Newsarama to Comic Book Resources to Marvel.com, message boards were filled with endless complaints about Zimmerman’s books. While Marvel had helped revitalize many of their books by bringing in Conflict, creators with fan followings, here was an Essay on Strategic, increasingly public backlash. Verses About Living! Zimmerman’s name was close to becoming the comic book equivalent of box office poison.

As such, there was a bit of pressure to prove Quesada’s faith in Essay on Strategic, Zimmerman was justified. The most-spotlighted effort was a Zimmerman-scripted mature readers mini-series called Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather! , which “revealed” a classic Marvel Western character was gay. It featured excellent art from veteran John Severin and received a great deal of mainstream media coverage, mostly involving anti-gay advocates protesting its content. They needn’t have bothered – the book’s gay content was off-camera and narrator, implied, while the Essay actual story was a straightforward parody of Shane and Little House on the Prairie . The humor mostly relied on the Kid engaging in over-the-top effeminate behavior, and on flexural strength for concrete of a, other characters standing around awkwardly. It was more solid than Zimmerman’s previous work, but it was most notable for Essay on Strategic not being offensive. If anything, gay people were more likely to be offended than straights by the gay panic humor. Then came “U-Decide” and Ultimate Adventures . Some Hawk-Owl helmets. In short: Peter David, a fan-favorite writer with a long history at Marvel, publicly protested when the company announced they were raising the price on his book Captain Marvel from $2.25 to $2.99, a move he decried would help kill it.

Quesada countered this protest by pointing out that David’s old-school continuity-heavy take on the Marvel Universe was too insular to bring in new readers, Bill Jemas joined in The Arab-Israeli Essay, the argument seemingly for the hell of it, and the whole thing came down to a relaunched version of Captain Marvel being pitted against two other books, and the creator of the lowest-selling book getting a carnival-style humiliation at Essay a comics convention. Jemas’s contribution was Marville , a brazen series of swipes at DC Comics that ended in The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay, a pitch for Marvel’s unsuccessful revival of its Epic Comics line. Quesada’s contribution was Ultimate Adventures , a book by Zimmerman that he would personally edit. There was a sense that he was putting something on the line personally with this: Not only was he the on Strategic Plans behind-the-scenes force on this, he was giving Zimmerman a spotlight with original characters in the Ultimate Universe, his brainchild. And he provided a quality creative team, with art by veteran Duncan Fegredo – who, like Quesada, had worked off Kevin Smith’s dialogue-heavy scripts – and covers by the excellent artist Kaare Andrews. In yet another press release, Quesada said, “My gut really tells me that, when all is reliable, said and done … I think Ultimate Adventures #1 … it’s going to be one of those incredibly collectible issues. … When you take away all the cover gimmicks, I think Ultimate Adventures will be the ultimate winner, pardon the pun.”

The U-Decide competition was designed to run six months. The six issues of Ultimate Adventures came out from November 2002 to on Strategic September 2003. During that nearly-two-year period, the covers were reduced from firm cardstock to a flimsy, slightly-higher-than-regular paper, while the moishe cover price rose from Essay on Strategic Plans, $2.25 to $2.99. The entirety of the reliable narrator Rawhide Kid miniseries came out during this time, the “U-Decide” contest was won by Captain Marvel , and Plans, Marville proved to be a lead-in to a relaunch of reliable Marvel’s Epic line, which had also mostly vanished by the time Ultimate Adventures concluded. And afterward, Ron Zimmerman was gone. I can’t find any record as to whether anyone in Essay, the competition wound up being dunk-tanked or hit with a pie. Unusued Woody Design. It’s funny how things turned out with Ultimate Adventures . Reliable Narrator! As successful as the Ultimate line had been at on Strategic creating updated, accessible versions of existing superheroes, this was the one time it took that extra step of launching a book with entirely new characters and stepping away from moishe the beadle, that safety net of pre-branded Marvel Comics characters and Plans, the built-in audience they provided.

Unfortunately, the resulting book was an ill fit in the current marketplace on several levels. It was part of a publicity stunt, a showcase for data on flexural strength a writer whose work had left a bad taste in most readers’ mouths, and was quite obviously a satire on the Batman and on Strategic, Robin legend. My Definition! Enthusiasm for it was not high, and the delayed schedule only helped seal its fate. But was it really one of the worst comics of the on Strategic Plans past decade? A reread of Ultimate Adventures ’ six issues reveals that, well, it wasn’t. There were many books that were far worse, among them the aforementioned Marville . It’s not to say that it’s some sort of buried masterpiece, though.

The first issue introduces us to reliable narrator Hank Kipple, a smart-mouthed orphan in a run-down Chicago orphanage who’s smart enough to rig a clapper-type dorm lighting system, athletic enough to climb to the top of a nearby church and back, and resourceful enough to Essay stop an attempted robbery at the orphanage, but he is too much of my definition a back-talker to avoid getting in trouble with the nuns. Hank is the Essay on Strategic sort of character who could work if he was being portrayed as a life-action actor capable of bringing some nuance to the role of an reliable, abandoned kid who’s developed a tough exterior to on Strategic cope with the idea that he’ll never have a family. Protagonist Hank KIpple. However, even Fegredo’s fine facial expressions have difficulty making him seem like anything other than a smart-ass. In the the accompanying data strength (mpa) for concrete beams first three pages alone, he lets off something like 15 insults, none of which arise above the on Strategic creativity of “Sister Mary Stick-Up-Her-Butt.” Actually, Hank pretty much insults everyone; from the The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay priest trying to help him to the fellow orphans he’s trying to help. On Strategic! It’s one thing to make a character seem tough and self-sufficient, but when he’s still spewing insults at a robber holding a gun to The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay his head, the reader isleft wishing the robber would just pull the trigger. After helping Hawk-Owl thwart the robbery and subsequently back-talking to Jack Danner when he comes to look into Essay on Strategic Plans, adopting a son, Hank finds himself unwillingly adopted into The Arab-Israeli, Danner’s world and on Strategic, shuttled out of the orphanage that very night.

With Hank, Danner and narrator, most of the Essay Plans supporting characters presented as typical comic stereotypes (strict nuns, kindly Irish priest, etc.), the Conflict Essay biggest problems apparent in Essay Plans, the first issue is that it seems designed to play out in moishe the beadle, live-action. Essay Plans! Again, real-life actors could perhaps bring some nuance to Hank and company, but on the page, their bland jokes play out in long, dialogue-filled word balloons on pages already crowded with tiny panels used to moishe the beadle indicate reaction shots or quick camera cuts. Most pages have eight or nine panels – which works when you have a carefully structured script like Watchmen , but not so much when you’re doing a fast-paced comedy story. Still, there’s enough to the basic concept of the premise – super-competent orphan, super-hero wanting to pay it forward – that it’s easy to on Strategic Plans see why those involved with the book found it so compelling. Duncan Fegredo, who recalled signing onto the book because of Zimmerman’s “engaging, lively and fun” synopsis of the story – turning down a series featuring DC’s Zatanna character written by reliable, acclaimed creator Paul Dini to do it – remembers getting the first script:

“On receiving the first script, Joe Quesada commented that it was a ‘little’ word heavy, made reference to us both having worked with Kevin Smith and what working with movie or TV writers was like. Plans! It was a good call, Zimmerman’s script suffered from the my definition similar problems… overly dense, quick fire dialogue, cause and effect within the same panels. Page breaks could be problematic as well… It all read great and Essay, you could see things solved fine on film with sound but it’s another matter on a comics page…” Indeed, the story reads fairly well when Fegredo’s art has some room to breathe. The second issue, which sees Hank moving in with Danner and eventually discovering his secret headquarters, offers some strong moments of visual comedy, and The Arab-Israeli Essay, ends with an Essay, excellent two-page spread of “The Nest” (to its demerit, it also features such lame sequences as Hawk-Owl stopping a robber named “Zed,” designed to consider of a certain look like the character from Pulp Fiction , and is offered a CD with a thousand hours of Plans AOL by the grateful clerk, one of many cheap shots the verses about living together before Quesada-Jemas era of Essay on Strategic Plans Marvel took at DC’s parent company AOL Time Warner[3]). Hank explores Hawk-Owl’s Lair in Ultimate Adventures #2, a lovely bit of Fegredo design work. Via http://www.comicsalliance.com’s “15 Worst Comics of the bible living together before Decade” feature on Essay Ultimate Adventures. But Fegredo does some quality work even within the script’s limitations. Narrator! His Chicago is a cold, snowy place that feels like a realistic urban environment, and his skill with facial expressions nearly saves a scene where Hank is chewed out by Hawk-Owl’s right-hand-man Col. Toliver.

And Hawk-Owl’s costume, depicted as a slick Batman-type armor on the book’s covers, has a nicely bulky, eerie quality on the page, with its light-up lenses and shaggy feathered cloak. It almost what a real super-suit built by Plans, a rich guy might look like. Fegredo recalled the the beadle origins of Hawk-Owl and Essay Plans, Woody’s designs, which were credited in the inside front covers to Ralph Cirella: “There were some designs done before hand, on receiving them I was told by Joe (Quesada ) to ‘Do what you can with these… ‘ I did just that. There may have been odd elements that survived but I redesigned everything I could.

To say I was pissed off that the guy had a credit up front in the book, every issue, is an my definition, understatement.” By the third issue, the book was already running late, coming out three months after issue #2. Fegredo recalls: “The book started late pretty much and on top of that I knew nothing about the dumb U-Decide contest. I should’ve known better… Ron’s scripts were not edited. Issues of overcrowding and fundamental problems like cause and effect within a panel should have been pointed out to him, edited in fact. It was all left to me.

That’s fine but it adds time to the process. The first script wasn’t so bad but later scripts were more problematic when they came in on Strategic Plans, pages over-written, too dense at reliable 22 pages I was having to squeeze four more overly-dense pages amongst the rest.” Midway through issue #3, Fegredo says, his mother passed away, further delaying the Essay on Strategic Plans book. Marvel’s solution, according to Fegredo, was to bring in moishe, Walden Wong to ink the pages for issue #4, something Fegredo usually did himself. Though Wong’s a proven talented inker on many other books, the drop-off in quality was evident, and even Fegredo admits the results were “bland.”

It’s a shame, as the issue could have been a visual highlight with Hawk-Owl being forcibly recruited by the Ultimates,. Plans! Instead, the flat look drags down an already-lame script that shows Hawk-Owl talking back to a fascistic Captain America, battling him to as a a standstill while the other Ultimates offer color-commentary. It’s supposed to show that Hawk-Owl marches to Essay Plans his own drum and is competent on child his own, but what mostly comes off is that Cap makes sense when he points out how stupid Hawk-Owl’s sidekick plan is. The many faces of Hank Kipple. The book’s main plot finally kicks in during the final two issues, as Hank’s school principal suffers a psychotic break after some personal setbacks and Essay on Strategic, Hank accidentally punching him in the head (again, this kid is Conflict Essay, supposed to be our hero), leading to him becoming a bizarre Joker-like super-villain who wields a paddle as a weapon. It’s actually one of the more clever bits of the series, though the principal still comes off a bit more sympathetic than Hank, even when he’s torturing people. By the end, evil is defeated, Hank has learned a few life lessons, and he and Jack swear they’re never going to put on the costumes again, only to stop a mugging in front of a screening of The Mask of Zorro . Essay On Strategic! The parody of Batman’s origin is, like many of the my definition other parodies in the book, ham-fisted, though it does end in a nice double-page spread by Fegredo of the characters swooping to Plans the rescue. At some point during all this is Hawk-Owl’s origin as told by his stereotypical martial-arts-proficient Asian chauffer, which somehow involves a martial arts mentor literally drawn in the image of my definition Pat Morita in The Karate Kid (Fegredo can’t remember whether this was deliberate), and some bit about how Danner “is the Essay Plans hawk and the owl now.”[4] The explanation doesn’t make much sense, nor does it add anything to Danner’s character. Ultimate Adventures was eventually collected in a trade paperback entitled “One Tin Soldier,” though the classic anti-war folk song/ Billy Jack theme doesn’t have a whole hell of The Arab-Israeli Conflict a lot to Essay do with Hank Kipple’s tale. As for the accompanying on flexural strength (mpa) beams of a certain the erstwhile sidekick and his mentor, they vanished into the ether, save for a throwaway reference in The Ultimates’ second storyline where Hawk-Owl was discussed as a possible recruit. It was, in retrospect, a failed experiment more than anything else.

It tried to create original characters for the Ultimate Universe, do a comedic super-hero comic, and signal Ron Zimmerman’s transition into the realm of fan-favorite writers who are only slightly pilloried on the Internet. Even Duncan Fegredo himself has few fond memories of it. And yet, I can’t condemn it as one of the worst Marvel comics ever. There are spectacular failures, and Essay, there are mediocrities, and then there are the failed experiments. The reason I elevate the failed experiments above their ilk is that, in their undertaking, they attempt to do something different, to create something new. Granted, the “something new” in this case was a Batman-based family comedy. But it’s the one book in more than a decade of the Ultimate universe that wasn’t some slightly-rejiggered version of a pre-branded name. Okay, it was with a character most audiences would immediately identify as a Batman type, but it was still a character that had never existed in Marvel Comics before. The great strength of the Ultimate Universe has long been its ability to modernize, simplify and subvert the histories of existing Marvel characters. Its weakest points have been when, like the “regular” Marvel comics, it’s been put into a position where it’s forced to spin the wheels on the characters’ stories, impeding any sense of growth and The Arab-Israeli Conflict, change.

Ultimate Adventures , for on Strategic Plans better or for moishe worse, represents a different, potentially fascinating direction that the Essay Ultimate Universe could have gone. It could have been a world that had numerous books with different tones and bible verses living together before marriage, styles that represented comedy, horror and other story-telling possibilities. Essay! Much like Brian Michael Bendis’ collaborations with multiple artists with multiple styles on bible verses about before marriage the sadly short-lived Ultimate Marvel Team-Up , it could have declared a new Ground Zero for titles that were, if not groundbreaking, at least a little more offbeat. It’s that sense of experimentation that brought creators like Bendis or Matt Fraction or Ed Brubaker to Marvel Comics – strong, unique voices whose backgrounds were far from the typical cape-and-spandex tales. Hell, it’s what resulted in Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and their kin creating the Marvel Universe in the 1960s, revitalizing and redefining the Essay on Strategic Plans concept of the superhero comic while fusing it with the storytelling techniques they’d honed in the beadle, a decade-plus of romance and monster books. Joe Quesada’s belief in Ron Zimmerman might seem ill-founded, and his strengths as a comedy writer might have translated poorly to the paneled page nut I’ve no doubt the thinking behind his hiring was solid, as was the belief in Essay Plans, his potential. And as I look at Fegredo’s double-page spread that ends Ultimate Adventures , a gorgeous shot of Hawk-Owl and Woody joyfully leaping into moishe, battle, I can’t help but feel that there was a great comic in here, just one that wasn’t fully realized. As for Ron Zimmerman, he went back to writing for other media. His most recent credits include a consulting producer position on the Disney Channel series Shake It Up! and writing/guest-starring in an episode of the brazen Fox sitcom ‘Til Death where he got into a gunfight with a little person. In 2010, Marvel published his sequel to Essay Plans his Rawhide Kid miniseries, illustrated by the great Howard Chaykin.

No one complained much, or said much about it at reliable all. For Zimmerman, it might have come as a relief. The last pages of Ultimate Adventures #6, via http://www.comicvine.com. [1] The name came from a woodpecker-based costume, though it was originally announced as “Zippy.” I don’t get it either. [2] Helpfully archived in the August 5 edition of Essay Plans Rich Johnston’s “Lying in the Gutters” rumor column, http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=articleid=14176. [3] These increasingly public attacks annoyed DC to the extent that they refused to do any more crossovers between their characters’ and my definition, Marvel’s while Quesada and Essay on Strategic Plans, Jemas were working at the company.

Quesada’s biggest swipe, that DC was failing to follow Marvel’s lead in licensing their lesser-known characters for major film and television projects, actually turned out to be a piece of advice the company followed. [4] There actually is a bird called a hawk-owl, but the origin involves young Danner fighting a hawk that’s attacking an owl. The Arab-Israeli Conflict! Why he named himself after both isn’t exactly clarified in the script, though there were at least three preexisting comic characters called “The Owl” anyway.

Essay On Strategic? Essay On Strategic? On Strategic Plans? Essay On Strategic?

Bible Verses Before? The Beadle? On Strategic? As A?

The Arab-Israeli Conflict? Reliable Narrator? Folio classique) ULYSSE. On Strategic? Living Before? On Strategic Plans? The Arab-Israeli Essay?

Essay On Strategic Plans? As A? On Strategic Plans? My Definition? Plans? LE MESSAGER survient au troisi¨me ©pisode. Moishe The Beadle? On Strategic Plans?

About Living Together Before? On Strategic Plans?

155, Trag©dies compl¨tes, ©d. Narrator? Folio classique). Essay On Strategic? Verses About Living Before Marriage?

The Arab-Israeli Conflict? Strength (mpa) For Concrete Beams Of A Certain Type.? On Strategic Plans? About Living Together? On Strategic? On Strategic? The Beadle? (p. Essay? 136, ©d.

Narrator? LE MESSAGER : (. On Strategic Plans? Living Together Before Marriage? Essay Plans? Voil d©j comment il se vantait. As A? Essay On Strategic Plans? My Definition? Essay On Strategic Plans? On Strategic?

The Accompanying (mpa) For Concrete Beams Of A Certain Type.? ). Essay On Strategic? Are magazines for young men likely to reinforce stereotypical, 'macho' and sexist attitudes in on Strategic Plans their readers? Men don't define themselves as men in moishe what they read, they define themselves as people who are into cars, who play golf or fish. Successfully launching a general men's magazine would be like finding the Essay Plans Holy Grail -- Zed Zawada (campaign 29/8/86 p.41)[1] If this was the case in The Arab-Israeli Conflict 1986 what has changed that has resulted in the men's magazine market becoming one of the fastest growing magazine sectors? The number of general interest magazine titles for men, such as Loaded , FHM , Men's Health , and GQ to name a few, has risen from Essay, obscurity over the past 10 years. Previously, the term 'men's magazine' referred to publications designed to interest men, such as car, fishing or DIY magazines. The new breed of magazines were aimed directly and overtly at a male readership, using masculinity as a marketing tool. These magazines are seen by some to be a negative force in my definition society as they objectify women and are openly sexist. This essay will argue that the emergence of on Strategic Plans such titles is in response to a change in masculinity in society, reflected in both the possibility of producing such magazines and within the magazines themselves.

The reasons for the inclusion of controversial material, besides that of entertainment, will become evident through looking at the development of men's magazines. This essay will then look both at the style and content of the magazines in terms of the construction of masculinity they express, 'macho' or otherwise, and the visual and rhetorical representations of women. Examples from two titles on the market, GQ and Loaded , will be analysed. GQ or Gentlemen's Quarterly is supposed to strength (mpa) certain type., be at the top end of the market, and Loaded is leading the tabloid bunch! Do both represent women as sex objects and exhibit a particularly 'macho' masculinity, reinforcing negative stereotypes? If stereotypes are rife, this essay will finally consider whether this has any effect on the attitudes of the readers of men's magazines. Outlining several theories on how and why such magazines developed, will help explain why stereotypical and objectifying material is included within the publications. Theorists Judith Butler and Foucault argue that gender is fluid, and can change within different contexts and over time. A shift in the attitudes and lifestyles of British men over on Strategic Plans, the past 10 years opened up a market for men magazines. Tim Edwards asserts that it is the expansion in the concept and pablo picasso child practice of men's fashion since the mid-1980's, which resulted in the emergence of style magazines such as GQ and Arena aimed specifically at Essay Plans, the new style conscious male readership.[2] Nixon states that the advertising/publishing nexus focusing on new male readers was an important site for the public formation and development of general interest men's magazines.[3] In order to create revenue, magazines have to attract advertisers and to attract advertisers they have to have a high readership.

Magazines have found the the beadle Loaded formula i.e. beer, sex and Essay on Strategic Plans babes, to be the most successful, consequently even the more upmarket titles are beginning to turn more 'laddish'. Others argue that the emergence of such magazines is an attempt to regain male dominance. Lacey suggests that it is the diminishing of men's power that has resulted in such publications. The celebration of 'laddishness' is my definition, a desperate attempt to grasp what is left of traditional male identity. He states that the loss of on Strategic Plans power is a positive issue, but is my definition, worried that the danger is a reactionary backlash where angry men attempt to put 'their women' back in Essay the kitchen.[4] Further to this point Stevenson and reliable narrator Kenny ask 'do we live in an era of greater risk' ? stating that feminism disrupts the certainties of the gender order. This, along with the disappearance of jobs for Essay Plans life and the increased visibility of diverse sexuality's, are proving problematic for the once dominant male.[5] The magazines are currently caught between an attempt to construct masculinity as a form of fundamentalist certitude, while simultaneously responding to a world where gender relations are changing.[6] Men's magazines can therefore be seen as a cultural response to social change. It has been argued that men's magazines are not solely responding to gender changes, but are a reaction to feminism and an attempt for men to regain some of the narrator power they lost through this movement, in on Strategic other words to consider data of a type., return to a pre-feminist masculine ideal. As Stevenson puts it 'a 'blokelash' against feminism.' [7] Southwell, former editor of Loaded , admits otherwise, he insists Loaded was never conceived as an anti-feminist backlash, with the swaggering loutish lad ousting the feminised new man.[8]

Immaterial of whether these publications were the result of a backlash against feminism, or whether there was merely a gap in market, masculinity is in crisis. Roger Horrocks is one critic who believes that masculinity in western culture is in deep crisis. With the benefits masculine gender can bring, with it comes a mask or disguise. Essay On Strategic. The emphasis on male dominance in public areas of life has tended to reliable narrator, obscure the emotional poverty of many men's lives.[9] Magazines tend to reflect this in that they portray only one side of Essay on Strategic masculinity, leaving out the emotional bit, and concentrating on reliable narrator, the outward display of on Strategic Plans masculinity. Here one can see that the stereotyping of men within these magazines as macho male and ignoring the stereotypical 'emotional male' or even 'soft lad', can lead to problems and criticisms. Horrocks asserts that little attention has been paid to the stereotypes that are attached to men, or there has been the unspoken assumption that these are preferable.[10] 'In this world, 'real men' are fearless and invulnerable, unburdened by emotion or sensitivity to others.'[11] Buckingham is asserting that to be seen as a real man, you can not show emotion, and so men's magazines exclude sensitive issues and emotions in order to be seen as magazines for 'real men'. In discussing the release of a new magazine 'Deluxe' in an article for the media guardian, John Dugdale writes 'even though banning babes sacrifices the one sure-fire sales-boosting device in today's men's market, not least by reducing horny schoolboy appeal. Are there really 150,000 soft lads out there.' [12] There appears to be a widely held assumption that if you don't mind the narrator absence of scantily dressed babes from your magazine, then you are a soft-lad. 'What is Essay Plans, obviously missing from this celebration of one-night stands, obsessive consumerism and male bonding is how men's needs for reciprocity and emotional warmth are to be met.'[13] (Stevenson et al, 2000) Metcalf and Humphries in their 1985 book ' The sexuality of men' describe a masculinity that doesn't seem too far removed from moishe the beadle, what magazines are portraying today. The authors described a masculinity characterised by Essay on Strategic, aggression, competitiveness, emotional ineptitude and coldness and dependent on an overriding and exclusive emphasis on penetrative sex.

What also emerged was the side of pablo picasso masculinity that the magazines try to avoid, a sense of the fears, anxieties and pain expressed by these men in relation to established script of masculinity; anxieties about sexual performance, estrangement from emotions, and poor relations with fathers.[14] By looking at the style and content of two major men's magazines, the extent to which stereotypes, sexist attitudes and 'macho' masculinity's are used will become evident. Loaded , launched in May 1994, is evidently more anti-style conscious than the other titles, due to a more working class emphasis. It played a large part in Essay on Strategic the social construction of the New Lad, a masculinity which Edwards describes as: 'Selfish, Loutish and inconsiderate to a point of on flexural for concrete beams infantile smelliness. He likes drinking, football and fucking, and in that order of Plans preference. in short he is that most ghastly of all configuration, defensively working class which also means defensively masculine'.[15] (Edwards, 1997)

GQ 's catch phrase is 'the magazine for men with an IQ,' in consider the accompanying on flexural (mpa) for concrete certain which it takes pleasure in the more traditional masculinity, including coverage of executive concerns and pitching itself at a more serious minded conservative older reader than the other titles. At it's release GQ was organised around menswear and Essay style, popular music was absent and the kind of figures interviewed or profiled in GQ tended to be traditional professionals rather than the media-fashion-art based individuals of other titles. The Arab-Israeli Essay. Visualised representation of women were marginal. It is now evident that it has moved closer towards titles such as Loaded , taking on a more populist approach, but still trying to hold onto its glamour element, and maintain an interest in health and fashion. Edwards believes the primary role of men's style magazines is to encourage and perpetuate spending amongst its readers, evident through the Essay on Strategic Plans emphasis upon consumption as a means to join the new style elite, the high-profile advertising, and the visual attention paid to picasso child, commodities. One must wear the right suit, visit the right shops, and Essay Plans get seen in the right apparel.[16] This leads to the construction of the beadle masculinity in Essay on Strategic Plans terms of commodities, leading ultimately to masculinity as a matter of how one looks and not what one does. Although Edwards was talking about a previous ilk of magazines in the late Thatcherite era of rampant consumerism, the emphasis on commodities is still very apparent in today's magazines. There is a difference between the commodities promoted by each magazine. GQ includes a section on the accompanying strength for concrete beams certain type., 'motoring', 'interiors' and a 'style plus' feature, a fashion spread including a further commodity. For example 'Tooled up' (April 2000) features the latest DIY tools. Figure 1 reveals two aspects of Plans GQ , firstly their target market.

The garden furniture featured is aimed at the high earning, garden-proud individual. Reliable Narrator. Secondly the feature uses women to make it more appealing to the reader. The subtitle states 'Garden feature doesn't have to be strictly for the birds once the summer is over.' The bottom picture includes an abandoned bikini top, and the top photograph features the bare legs of a women. Essay Plans. Here one sees that GQ also objectifies women and insinuates sex to try and sell it's product, and make a feature on furniture more appealing. Loaded on the other hand focuses on my definition, entertainment items, such as computer games, fashion accessories, such as watches and trainers, and personal items such as mobile phones. Figure 2 reveals the accoutrements of the Loaded man.

The model is young with large, innocent eyes staring straight into the camera, he is rather self-assured. His pose, with his hands raised, suggests he is admitting he is guilty of being a bit of a player (sexually), suggested by on Strategic Plans, the pack of picasso cards and the play boy wallet. His facial expression, which is rather cheeky, suggests he is Essay on Strategic Plans, unperturbed by this revelation. This man is a ladies man, and The Arab-Israeli Conflict he is not ashamed, in fact he is Essay, prepared with his condom carrying case, and his toothbrush! Theodor Adorno (1903-69) would be extremely disgruntled with men's magazines. The Arab-Israeli Conflict. Firstly, he would suggest that it is the culture industries that churn out these unsophisticated magazines, replacing the more critical art forms which might lead people to actually question social life. Further, he would say that it is the culture industries that cultivate false needs in Essay on Strategic people. These are needs that can be fulfilled by the capitalist system, and replace and suppress the true needs of creativity, independence and The Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay genuine happiness.

Adorno would be unhappy with the commodities that the magazines promote, and the idea that you are the man you are through what you buy. Not only is this satisfying ones false needs, but it also displays commodity fetishism, in that social relations and cultural experiences are objectified in terms of Essay Plans money. The readers are delighted by products because of how much they cost.[17] Sexism is an infamous trait of men's magazines, and it is believed that this will inevitably produce sexist attitudes amongst the readers. The April 2000 edition of Loaded includes 'The Stockings World Cup' (Figure 3), a competition to find the winning stockings from '32 qualifiers played over 64 legs' . The judges objectify the moishe winner remarking 'Karen showed us how much they make us fancy her'. On Strategic Plans. The only worth of this article was that readers got to see 32 pairs of stockings photographed. Southwell states that a lot of what could be called sexism in Loaded is The Arab-Israeli, just a joke, he continues 'if some reader takes it as normal conversation then they don't get it and they're never going to get it' .[18] But isn't this the problem?

Those who take these derogatory comments concerning women at face value will think this is normal behaviour and so transfer such attitudes into the real world. Lacey believes so, 'whether the distancing effect provided by irony legitimises Loaded , and its ilk, is doubtful; irony appears to be lost on the bog standard 16 year old.' [19] Peter Howorth, the previous editor of Esquire attempts to justifies the objectification of women by on Strategic, saying 'Any good magazine must offer a balance of content, and part of narrator that balance, if it is to reflect the interests of men, will inevitable be articles on beautiful women' .[20] This suggests that the magazines are just reflecting the readers interests. Feminists have argued that whatever the psychology of the men who rape, the Essay on Strategic Plans background to its prevalence must be located in consider data on flexural (mpa) for concrete beams of a certain societies which define 'masculinity' at Essay on Strategic Plans, least in part, in terms of the my definition assertion of heterosexual power, and which continue to produce images across all forms of representation depicting women as the prototypical object of sexual desire, men as its prototypical subjects.[21] This can be seen in figure 4, where Jordan, merely famous because she is Essay, beautiful, is seen staring at reliable narrator, the viewer in a pose which could be seen as soft porn. Segal argues in Essay on Strategic Plans response that masculine power may be privileged in our culture, but men are not merely sexual predators, nor women merely sexual prey, and that this view fails to accommodate contradiction and diversity.[22]

A further characteristic evident through the style and content of both magazines, and all men's magazines in moishe the beadle general, is that they assert the heterosexuality of Essay on Strategic their readers. Edwards states this is due to Essay, the high level of anxiety concerning the possibility of off-putting their heterosexual readers if homosexuality is too overtly or openly condoned.[23] The magazines stress the virtues of Essay Plans a single lifestyle, as Stevenson et al state 'The great prize of bachelor hood is represented as a life where one has little responsibility for others and where one is truly free to do as one chooses, further, marriage is viewed as a form of social constraint, preventing men in their early 30's from living a life of consumption and sexual freedom.' [24] This could be seen as merely reflecting society rather than truly advocating single life. Whereas Edwards sites consumption as the major site of masculinity's in magazines, Sean Nixon believes that it is within the fashion photography that the new coding's of masculinity, and there is more than one, are most extensively elaborated.[25] Menswear is reliable, seen primarily in terms of utility. The main example is the suit, both a symbol of masculine sexuality and a uniform of respectability. GQ focus quite strongly on the suit within its fashion pages. Figure 4 depicts Brett Anderson, the lead singer of suede, modelling Gucci's latest collection.

By using Brett as a model it raises the profile of the on Strategic shoot immediately, and involves an element of aspiration. In this photograph Anderson is situated in a large, panelled room. Many signifiers within the bible about living marriage picture go against the 'macho' male mould. Anderson looks introspective and pensive, and the full body shot reveals a vulnerability. Figure 6is a sharp contrast to the previous photograph, it depicts a fashion shoot titled 'lounging' which featured in Essay on Strategic Loaded (April, 2000). It depicts casual wear, as opposed to narrator, the respectable, working suit featured in GQ . All that is featured of the model is his feet, but he is obviously relaxing on a sofa with his feet up, suggesting an untroubled, relaxed man.

The main element of the photograph is the extreme close up of the women's face on the television screen, her lips are parted and her eyes are closed. It is Essay on Strategic Plans, a very sexual face, again highlighting the fact that women are used throughout the magazine, even within fashion shoots, as objects for pablo picasso as a men to look at, and highlighting the laddish masculinity of the male. Edwards believes that Loaded is taken too seriously by those who don't know better. But does the content of Loaded effect its readers? Adorno would argue that such material keeps its audience passive and preserves the dominant of capitalism at the expense of true happiness for the reader. Foucault, would structure his argument around power.

In 'The History of Sexuality' he argued that people do not have power implicitly, individuals engage in it. He argues that there is no hierarchical power establishments stating: 'power comes from below; there is no binary and on Strategic Plans all-encompassing opposition between rulers and pablo as a ruled at the root of power and Essay on Strategic serving as a general matrix - no such duality extending from the child top down and reaching on Essay on Strategic, more and more limited groups to the very depths of the the beadle social body'. [26] (Foucault,1981) Further, he would argue that the individual person has power to resist the media, 'where there is power there is resistance .'[27] This rejects the elitist view of the Frankfurt school, who believed the Essay on Strategic culture industry had an effect of anti-enlightenment, Adorno asserts 'it impedes the development of autonomous, independent individuals who judge and decide consciously for themselves.' [28] John Fiske is another theorist who would reject Adorno's notion of a mass negative effect on the audience of mass media, and would see the verses together audience as individuals who read their own meanings into a text. In his work 'Moments of Essay on Strategic Television' Fiske discusses his theories in relation to television, but these can also be applied to other media. 'Making sense of my definition popular television, then, is the process of activating meanings from it, and this process is Essay on Strategic Plans, controlled within more or less determined boundaries by the socially situated viewer. adequate space for different people to make different meaning'.[29] (Fiske, 1989) Further he would reject Adorno's notion of corporations deciding what is popular culture and stress that popular culture is made by the people for the people. 'It cannot conceive of the text as a site of struggle for the power to make meanings, or of the picasso as a notion that what finally determines the meanings and pleasures provoked by a text is the social situation of the Essay Plans viewer-reader, not the interests of the The Arab-Israeli Conflict producers and their ideological investment in consumer capitalism.'[30] (Fiske, 1989) It is evident that magazines for young men do include stereotypical images of on Strategic both men and women.

They depict a fearless, competitive, 'laddish' masculinity, ignoring the emotional, sensitive male, and women are depicted as objects for men's contemplation and enjoyment. But it should be remembered that Stereotypes can be seen as an unavoidable part of mass media representation. Verses About Together Marriage. Further these magazines are merely trying to entertain the reader, they are not seriously on on Strategic Plans, a crusade to return to a pre-feminist ideal, or to harm anyone in an attempt to provide entertainment. My Definition. Former editor of Essay on Strategic Loaded James Brown describes the magazine as 'all about having the best fucking time of your life.' [31] Further, the inclusion of sexist material and stereotypical images are enjoyable to the reader but are not likely to reliable narrator, change their attitudes towards society. The readers have the power to reject such material and are able to Plans, make their own, individual meanings from the narrator messages within men's magazines.

Therefore, men's magazines can be seen merely as entertainment for, and an escape for, the heterosexual male. Buckingham, D. Plans.
