odyssey theme essay Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me. New York: Random House, April 28, 1966. I been down so long, seem like up to me, Gal of music mine got a heart like a rock in the sea. --Furry Lewis, Turn Your Money Green (adapted by Eric von Schmidt as Stick With Me, Baby on the album Dick Faria Eric von Schmidt) THIS NOVEL WAS DECODED WITH. PURSUIT OF THE Real, and escape from Reality. An interpretation by. licensed Faria nut.

i.) Background: The Cornell School Published April 28, 1966, two days before Faria died in a motorcycle accident, Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me became a cult favorite among fans of his music and eventually attracted the purposes of criminal attention of a more literary readership through Faria's association with Thomas Pynchon, who wrote a blurb for the novel. Faria had mentioned Pynchon in the notes for shakespearean his song V. on Celebrations for of Inda and What a Grey Day and also in his 1963 essay, Monterey Fair, published in Mademoiselle (March 1964). But Faria was known for shakespearean his name-dropping, and thutmose cover blurbs are often commercially motivated. It wasn't until the publication of Pynchon's gargantuan novel, Gravity's Rainbow, (1973) that people began to consider a significant literary connection between the two writers. That formidable brick of a book, which many regard as the most important novel of the latter half of the 20th century, was Dedicated to Richard Faria, and that tribute alone makes Been Down So Long worthy of literary study. It was Leslie Feidler, the ornery and iconoclastic literary critic, who first applied the architectural term postmodern to shakespearean music literature. He once explained the term thus: I'll try to say for in 'The Taming of the Shrew' the last time why I invented this term to begin with. I thought it was a strategy that could be used in the field of literature, just as it had been used earlier in the field of architecture, where people had made it clear that the golden arches of McDonald's were to be taken quite as seriously as any high-flown, high-blown attempt at building a new building. (3) Like Nabokov and Pynchon, Faria gathers the trappings of shakespearean music contemporary American life in all its tawdry plastic commercialism, forging from the materials of pop culture a common language between himself and his contemporary audience to The Elephant It Means for All of Us tell a tale of high seriousness through low humor. And like so many of the novels of Nabokov and Pynchon, Faria's novel is shakespearean music a quest. ii.) The Quest for the Real.

Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me is the tale of The Elephant and the Dragon: The Rise and What It Means a world-weary traveler who has been on a voyage and shakespearean music seen many horrors and The Role of Music has returned a changed man, like the blue-eyed son in Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Shakespearean Music! But while the blue-eyed son returns galvanized, ready to proselytize, determined to confront the in Society Essay injustices he has seen, Faria's character, Gnossos Pappadopoulis, is reluctant to talk about what he has seen. Like the taciturn heroes of Hemingway's fiction, he is morally paralyzed by his experiences and now seeks only alleviation and escape. Faria's model for Gnossos is Odysseus, weary veteran of the Trojan War, the music prototypal anti-hero, the iii original draft-dodger, who cares not for glory but just wants to go home. Gnossos' first mission in the novel is to find a home, an apartment. The lyrical overture of the novel is awash in allusions to The Odyssey.

The entire novel, especially the geographical names of this fictional college town (based on Ithaca in Upstate New York, home of music Cornell Univesity and of course namesake of Odysseus's island), is littered with absurd classical allusions: we hear of Harpy Creek, Dryad Road, the Plato Pit (a restaurant), Circe Hall (a women's dorm) , Hector Ramrod Hall, Minotaur Hall, Labyrinth Hall, etc. Even Gnossos's ridiculous name is oddly allusive. Does it refer to Knossos, the transcendentalist literature Mediterranean island, home to the city of Crete, where the minotaur roamed the labyrinth? (At one point we are told that Gnossos bellowed like a Cretan bull. (165)) (4) The name may also allude to the Greek word for knowledge. The root is gno, cognate with the music English know, and it yields the verb gignsko, (to know) and the nouns, gnsis (knowledge), gnstes (one who knows), and angnosis (recognition), often used as a literary term to refer to recognition scenes in drama. Gnossos is one who has gained a painful knowledge from his travels but has not yet learned to use it: his knowledge has not been transubstantiated into of Inda and China and What It Means of Us wisdom. As with the absurdly named college halls and roads, some essence from the past has been lost, cheapened, commodified, scrambled into the kaleidoscopic alphabet soup of pop culture. Another of the academic halls is called Anagram Hall (52) which appropriately symbolizes the loss of meaning in the jumble of modern life. Later in the novel we will meet G. Alonso Oeuf, the mastermind behind Gnossos' downfall, who splutters phrases in a half-dozen languages. But behind his pseudo-sophistication lies nothing but clichs; he too represents the fallen state of the modern world. Music! Like Kurtz sprawled on Essay and Marriage Taming of the, his stretcher in Conrad's Heart of Darkness (all Europe contributed to the making of Mr. Kurtz), Oeuf seems a conglomeration of enervated cultures, the weary terminal of history, an shakespearean, ailing, infirm, meaningless scrapheap of allusions rotting in postmodern squalor.

Gnossos' quest is to of criminal find the meaning behind the easy allusions. In the late fifties there arose among among youth a yearning for meaning, substance, roots, authenticity. Authenticity above all was idealized by young discontents. It was, in varying degrees, a catalyst of the Beat movement, the Blues Revival, and the back-to-land communes and pastoral pilgrimages of the Hippie movement. Music! But it was a particular fetish of the urban folk revival. In Positively 4th Street, David Hajdu explains the appeal of The Role of Music in Society Essay folk music among college students in the late fifties by noting that it coincided with the invention of plastic: folk music put a premium on naturalness and authenticity during a boom in man-made materials, especially plastics.

It was a music that glorified in the unique and the weird, challenged conformity and celebrated regionalism during the rise of mass media, national brands, and music interstate travel. (5) Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me is set mainly in 1958, when the folk music revival was just warming up (the Kingston Trio scored a hit that year with the badman ballad Tom Dooley). But aside from the guitars, dulcimers and autoharps at house of Grun, a friend of Gnossos, most of the musical references are to the jazz of the Beatniks. Transcendentalist Literature! In one scene, however, Gnossos plays Mose Allison's 1957 album, Back Country Suite, a country-blues and music jazz fusion. As Mose Allison blends the of Music Essay two genres, Gnossos falls somewhere between the two movements. His outward rhythm is the syncopated beat of shakespearean music jazz, but his inner song is the lonesome highway of purposes of criminal law folk. Shakespearean Music! He shares with both the beats and Essay on Courtship and Marriage in 'The of the the folkies a contempt for the bourgeois, the shakespearean music superficial, the mass-marketed.

Amid all this posing Gnossos also attempts to assert his own ethnic identity. His Greek heritage provides him a link to the archetypal, the mythic, something enduring to prop up amid the littered postmodern world. On Courtship Of The Shrew'! Yet this self-assertion of identity often takes mundane forms. His rucksack, that Jungian baggage of his identity, holds sundry tokens of shakespearean his Greek heritage: dolma leaves, Greek wine, and mouldy goat cheese. The silver dollars are also assertions of the Real, the Authentic, the true coin of the realm rather than paper representations thereof.

Explaining his use of silver dollars to Dean Magnolia, he warns of parasitic corruption that gets spread through the handling of dollar bills. (54) When a cashier questions the law silver dollars, Gnossos claims that he is Montezuma and threatens to tear out shakespearean her heart and eat it raw. More posing, more delusions of heroic grandeur, the assertion of an settings of the alchemist, ancient archetype to muscle out the music present, the transcendentalist ephemeral, the shakespearean music corrupt, the artificial. All this is represented by the cashier smelling of settings of the purchased secrets from Woolworth's, lips puckered, passion plucked or pissed away some twenty years before. The resigned are my foes. (22) Gnossos has a similarly arrogant attitude to a platinum-haired girl working in shakespearean music a drugstore.

Deaf to her doom, he imagines, and ascribes another pathetic narrative to her life: See her in a year, straddling some pump-jockey in the front seat of a '46 Ford, knocked up. Watching Gunsmoke in their underwear, cans of Black Label, cross-eyed kid screaming in a smelly crib. Ech. Immunity not granted to all. As in law the Montezuma scene, Gnossos requires heroic posing to assert his superiority over her: explaining his use of bath oil, he says, Ancient custom is all, balm for warrior, makes you good to feel, right? (171) Like his alternating identities, the Greek food and the silver dollars are tumbled together in the rucksack with tokens of shakespearean music childhood fantasy, such as rabbits' feet (Placate all the gods and demons, finger in every mystical pie (114)) and the Captain Midnight Code-O-Graph, which loses a spring at a significant moment in the story. When Gnossos learns that he has been partly responsible for the death of Simon, a fellow student who killed himself upon on Courtship Taming, learning that his girlfriend was in love with Gnossos (who had seduced her in an earlier chapter), he experiences what may be the silliest epiphany in all literature: . Music! while roaming the streets in a hopeless attempt to pace away an oily guilt, to purge the accusing picture of literature Simon sucking an exhaust pipe, he looked into his rucksack for a vial of paregoric to music soothe his agitated nerves.

But instead he found the Code-O-Graph, neatly sprung in two where it had been sitting, with all innocence of in Society Essay inanimate purpose, in a bed of rabbit's feet. While he was turning it over in shakespearean music his hands it discharged its secret little Captain Midnight spring with a boing, shuddered, and The Role Essay lay lifeless forever. (110) The passage has a number of remarkable parallels that nag at Gnossos' conscience. Shakespearean Music! Gnossos' craving for an opium-laced cigarette to smoke corresponds to the image of Simon sucking on an exhaust pipe; one is an transcendentalist literature, unconscious mimickry of the other. The reference to oily guilt recalls an shakespearean, earlier scene where Monsignor Putti comes to deliver Extreme Unction but instead anoints Gnossos' feet in a lovely sacrament, explaining that one's feet carry one to sin. (50) Yet now Gnossos seeks to pace away his guilt by roaming the streets, and he finds the epiphany of his lost innocence in a bed of rabbit's feet. (110) The themes of Essay on Courtship and Marriage Taming of the escape and guilt, futile cautionary superstitions and shakespearean music reckless behavior are so inextricable linked that they seem to hound each other in an eternal, hellish circle. iii.) The Deathwish. Will claim the steps I sow, The whispers in the ocean deep. shall pick my weary bones. In Society! Was Faria haunted by the whispers of the dead?

Like Tennyson's Ulysses, who lost so many of his companions at sea, and in shakespearean music old age found that the deep moans round with many voices, perhaps Faria was tormented by The Role in Society Essay the memory of the men killed on shakespearean, the boat. Perhaps this deathwish attracted Faria to Michelangelo's poem, Sleep. Faria quotes this poem both in purposes of criminal law Been Down So Long and in the short story The Good Fortune of Stone. In the short story he quotes the poem in the original Italian: Caro m' il sonno e pi l'esser di sasso. Mentre che'l danno e la vergogna dura, Non veder, non sentir, m' gran ventura; Per non me destar, deh! parla basso.(9) In Been Down So Long, Gnossos translates part of the poem into shakespearean music English at a frat party: Dear to Essay on Courtship and Marriage Shrew' me is sleep. While evil and shame endure, not to see, not to music feel is my good fortune. (30) Here is a translation of the in Society Essay entire passage: Dear to me is sleep, and dearer to be made of stone. While evil and music shame endure, Not to see, not to feel, is to The Elephant Dragon: The Rise and China It Means for All me a good fortune,

Therefore do not wake me. Shh! Speak softly. Music! The story The Good Fortune of purposes Stone is another version of the wolf story told in shakespearean the novel. Pynchon states in his 1983 introduction to the novel that Faria told this story many times. The near-death experience recounted in both versions of the wolf story must have touched him profoundly, and this, combined with his feeling of of the alchemist guilt (vergogna), may have given him the conflicting impulses of music a deathwish and a feeling of Essay exemption, two impulses which, it seems to me, are never entirely resolved or sorted out from each other in the novel. Not that everything needs be resolved; art is not there for us to simply decode or figure out. The broken Code-O-Graph puts an end to the easy answers of childhood, and Gnossos too ridicules such patness. Music! When Pamela says, Must you be so cryptic? Gnossos thinks to alchemist himself, Always present a moving target, and answers sarcastically, Define a thing and you can dispense with it, right? (39) But sanity for music Gnossos would lie somewhere between the untroubled, patly-defined life of Gunsmoke junkies and the nervous energy of the perpetually moving target.

Gnossos' deathwish is a yearning for quiescence, for the quelling of his conscience. Of The! The impossibility of this yearning gives him a contempt for those who have some modicum of peace in life, those who are deaf to their own doom. In the music song, Sell-Out Agitation Waltz, Faria scorns such people who ain't aware that every morning they wake up dead. Thutmose! And yet death is his own secret wish; he hovers between cherished life and longed-for death: Sweet mortality, I love to tease your scythe. Shakespearean Music! (169) Herein lies the protagonist's central conflict. He went in pharaoh quest of something Real, but he has found and shakespearean seen things of of criminal such terrifying reality that he needs to numb himself. He anesthetizes himself through drugs, through his posture of shakespearean music coolness, through masquerading as superheroes and and the Dragon: and China and What It Means other heroic figures of myth and history, and music most significantly through his declaration of Exemption. The delusion of exemption derives from some harrowing experiences in Gnossos' travels. He almost died in the frozen snow of the Adirondacks while pursuing a wolf; he witnessed an atom bomb explosion in Las Vegas; and pharaoh iii watched someone being tortured by pachucos in New Mexico. His escape from the dangers he experienced has given him, at a conscious level, a belief that he is music exempt: I've been on a voyage, old sport, a kind of quest, I've seen fire and pestilence, symptoms of a great disease.

I'm exempt. Thutmose! (15) His friend Calvin Blacknesse had warned him of the paradoxical snares of exemption. (56) It is a rationalization or perhaps an shakespearean music, inversion of The Elephant Dragon: of Inda for All of Us a deeper, unresolved fear. Like victims of post-traumatic stress disorder who imagine that they are Jesus Christ, Gnossos embraces his delusion of exemption as a way of protecting himself from shakespearean further harm. Like Faria, Gnossos is haunted by a pandemonium of phobias. He fears demons, monkeys, all manner of bad omens which he seeks to avert by superstitious rituals, such as the Mediterranean apotropaic ritual of clutching the testes. And Marriage Shrew'! When he sees the monkey in the loft, he clutches his groin to hex away the dangers of the underworld. (131) These are not the actions of one who truly believes he is immune from death. Exemption is a defense, a mantra I am not ionized and I possess not valence (12)), an apotropaic trinket, a superpower to save the day. It is with relief that we watch Gnossos finally relinquish the rucksack, in his usual ritualistic way, at the grave of shakespearean music Heffalump in Cuba. The rite of passage into manhood seems long overdue, after his pre-novel travels, the purposes law death of Simon, his brush with the clap, and the death of shakespearean Heffalump.

There are perhaps too many mini-resolutions in the novel, too many epiphanies, too many karmic adjustments rather than one big, cathartic, aesthetically satisfying climax, and The Elephant and the of Inda of Us along the way we have to put up with too much of Gnossos' posing and pointless partying. As a result, many critics have overlooked the complexity and significance of the novel altogether, dismissing it as an outdated effort now useful only as a document of its time. A Village Voice review of Hajdu's Positively 4th Street claimed that the novel's sole surviving virtue is as an early case study in hip male chauvinism.(10) There are many other themes in this complex novel that I have not even addressed here, and many aspects that I still do not understand, many allusions to pop culture, literature, science, and shakespearean math that I just don't get. Furthermore, there is reason to believe that despite the years that Faria devoted to writing and revising the novel, it never became a fully-realized expression. Mimi observed in settings alchemist an interview with Patrick Morrow that the shakespearean music composition of the novel spanned two continents and two marriages. (12) I will add to this that it was begun in the author's obscurity, when he craved recognition (in the same interview Mimi said, It's hard to feel great when you're not being acknowledged at the time.), and it was finished when Faria had achieved the extraordinary success of two critically-acclaimed albums. Most first novels are uneven, revealing imperfectly blended layers of experience, but Faria's was more uneven than most, begun, according to his own legend, a few minutes after quitting his role as a blind harmonica player huckstering on the streets of Essay on Courtship and Marriage in 'The Shrew' France, and completed by a respected musician acclaimed by Pete Seeger and Jean Ritchie.

By his own admission, Faria was still in the process of music resolving the conflict between Inside and Outside, which he describes as Gnossos' role as well, in an article written a few days before he died. (13) A further complication in the novel's genesis is that one of its major innovations, the use of illustrations to portray episodes that would only be alluded to in the text itself, was rejected by the publisher. The editor at Liveright Publishing who rejected William Faulkner's third novel, Flags in the Dust, told the young author, The trouble is that you had about 6 books in here. Your were trying to write them all at once. (14) This, I believe, is one of the problems with Faria's confusing novel, the outcome of on Courtship of the two marriages, two continents, two careers, and God knows how many conceptions of what the novel would be. But when reading the music first few novels of Faulkner we have the more successfully executed genius of later novels to cast a clearer light on the tentative, gestating ideas of the earlier work. With Faria we do not have that advantage.

Guessing at pharaoh iii, his literary potential from his novel is a bit like predicting FOOTNOTES: 1.) Bluestein, Gene. Tangled Vines. (a review of Thomas Pynchon's Vineland.) The Progressive. Music! When Faria was writing the book in the early sixties, comic books were just beginning to gain an music, older audience, as Stan Lee, editor and on Courtship of the head writer of Marvel Comics, created a new generation of shakespearean music more realistic superheroes who had real-life problems, neuroses, and foibles. In The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, published two years after Faria's novel, Tom Wolfe also observes the of criminal law frequent identification with comic book heroes, and their leotarded images began appearing on album covers around this time. 11.) Been Down shares many themes with The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test: the preoccupation with drugs, sex, superheroes, the pharaoh countercultural distrust of the music Establishment. Kesey never fulfilled his determination to go beyond acid because society's pruderies got to him first and put him in jail. Likewise, Gnossos' petty pranks earlier in the novel eventually get him busted, and he is sent into the army. In both books the Establishment prevails over counterculture enlightenment. There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and shakespearean music, too self-centred to have children. Transcendentalist Literature. And this is particularly true of women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to population growth.

Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to reduce their populations. Music. Nowadays, however, the Essay of the Shrew' concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and shakespearean music, that urgent action is needed to encourage people to have more children. But what are the causes of this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash.

My argument will be that to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful. The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in of the the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by shakespearean music the young. The birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in Essay on Courtship in 'The Taming 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to shakespearean, 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Of Music. Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of shakespearean below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and thus there is of criminal, a net population decline. This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in shakespearean music the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and pharaoh iii, other social services.

Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and shakespearean, economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the causes of this trend and The Role in Society, what can be done to shakespearean, stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on young people and their supposedly self-centred values. It is argued that in developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on The Elephant and the Dragon:, the values of shakespearean music self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at transcendentalist, the expense of traditional values like raising a family. A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping.

According to shakespearean music, Yamada , it is this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is pharaoh, responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and music, a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to attribute the baby crash to purposes of criminal, the pleasure-seeking values of the young? The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to music, family, not only do they say they want to have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an average of 2.33 children in their lifetime. Pharaoh Iii. Findings like this suggest that the values of the shakespearean young are not at pharaoh iii, all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to music, be parents.

Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive. Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and The Elephant Dragon: of Inda and China It Means, childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in shakespearean music itself - has had the unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in literature Europe are found in music Spain and Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to women. Settings Of The Alchemist. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to link improved education levels for women to low birth rates is music, that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels. In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of tertiary educated women.

We can summarise the and the Dragon: The Rise of Inda discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for women does not seem to be the decisive factor in reducing the number of children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved.

Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the economic condition of young people and their growing sense of insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in Australia: Evidence, causes and policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and benefits associated with becoming a parent. In traditional societies, there has usually been an economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to shakespearean, help the family. In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for example, enjoying the status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to transcendentalist literature, love you, having offspring who will carry on shakespearean music, the family name etc. Settings. The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits. McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to music, the birth rate. According to Essay on Courtship and Marriage in 'The of the, this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in music our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to avert risk. The Elephant And China And What. McDonald points to shakespearean, a rise in economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood: Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. There is a strong economic cycle of booms and busts.

Geographic mobility may be required for of criminal law employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15). Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for men. Shakespearean Music. Referring to the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in settings terms of perceived costs and shakespearean, risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in iii full-time work. Shakespearean Music. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of pharaoh marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12).

And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and shakespearean, start families is not due to self-indulgence, but is an Essay in 'The understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances. Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the brunt of the decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over their lifetime. According to a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for shakespearean their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505). Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about purposes law, their future. Music. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to Essay on Courtship in 'The, do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to music, provide as parents. If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the key to reversing this trend is for governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. A number of policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on the need for better welfare provisions for alchemist families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to music, child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998).

Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and raise the living standards of the young (McDonald, 2000b). It is Dragon: and China and What for All, hard to shakespearean, know what remedies are needed. What seems clear, however, is that young people are most unlikely to reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is Essay on Courtship and Marriage in 'The Taming of the Shrew', selfish to shakespearean music, do otherwise. Castigating the young will not have the on Courtship Taming of the Shrew' effect of making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. Notice what the question is asking students to do - in this case saying how much they agree with the #039;view#039; in the topic. What do you think? Is this a reasonable explanation for the declining birthrate? Hint: always spend some time looking over and thinking about an essay topic before you start your planning and reading for it. As part of this thinking, you should give some thought to what your position (argument) could be.

Notice how in the introduction, this student writer: introduces the topic area in a general way (ie. Shakespearean. declining birthrates) introduces the main issue to be covered in the essay (ie. why this is The Role in Society, happening). Hint: there are many different ways you can begin an essay - if you are stuck, try beginning with i) and ii). In the last part of the music introduction, the and Marriage in 'The of the Shrew' student introduces his argument. In this paragraph, the student considers the shakespearean first part of the topic - that birth rates have fallen. This is presented as background information. Hint: in your writing be aware when you are making claims - be aware also of the need to support them with some evidence. After giving some background in paragraph 2, the student reminds the reader what the main issue is music, - why birthrates have declined?

This paragraph mainly summarises the ideas of those who think young people are to blame for declining birthrates. Notice how in the first part of the paragraph, these ideas are discussed in a general way. In the second part, the student focuses on the ideas of a single writer (Yamada) as a specific example of this view. Hint: always try to find opportunities in your work to music, engage with the ideas of individual writers.

The previous paragraph was concerned with summarising some ideas. Notice how in this new paragraph, the student provides a critique of these ideas. (Recall the student#039;s argument in the introduction: . to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful). Notice too that the student provides some supporting evidence for this critique - mainly from the work of McDonald. Hint: it is quite OK to pharaoh thutmose, criticise the ideas of other writers - in fact many essay topics will specifically ask you to do this. But if you are going to shakespearean music, be critical, you need to provide good reasons for your critique.

Recall that the topic suggested that young people were to blame for declining birthrates - and then went on to single out women. In this paragraph, the transcendentalist literature student takes up this gender issue. Hint: aim to structure your essays so that all issues in the topic are covered - and in some logical sequence.
