The most infamous execution of history occurred approximately 29 AD with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ outside Jerusalem. About 300 years later, the Emperor Constantine, after converting to Christianity, abolished crucifixion and other cruel death penalties in the Roman Empire. In 438, the Code of Theodosius made more than 80 crimes punishable by merit, death. [3] Britain influenced the colonies more than any other country and City Areas has a long history of define merit good punishment by death.

About 450 BC, the death penalty was often enforced by throwing the condemned into a quagmire. By the 10th Century, hanging from gallows was the most frequent execution method. William the Conqueror opposed taking life except in business aims, war, and ordered no person to be hanged or executed for any offense. However, he allowed criminals to be mutilated for merit good, their crimes. Stephen Death? During the merit good middle ages, capital punishment was accompanied by torture. Essay Legal Drinking? Most barons had a drowning pit as well as gallows and they were used for major as well as minor crimes.

For example, in define good, 1279, two hundred and eighty nine Jews were hanged for clipping coin. Under Edward I, two gatekeepers were killed because the city gate had not been closed in time to prevent the escape of an conjugal roles definition accused murderer. Burning was the punishment for women's high treason and men were hanged, drawn and quartered. Beheading was generally accepted for the upper classes. One could be burned for marrying a Jew.

On the first day he gave the victim a small quantity of bread, on the second day a small drink of bad water, and lawrence death so on until he confessed or died. Define Good? Under the reign of definition Henry VIII, the numbers of those put to death are estimated as high as 72,000. Boiling to death was another penalty approved in 1531, and there are records to show some people boiled for up to define merit two hours before death took them. When a woman was burned, the executioner tied a rope around her neck when she was tied to the stake. When the flames reached her she could be strangled from outside the ring of fire. Essay Legal Age Analysis? However, this often failed and many were literally burnt alive. [4] In Britain, the number of capital offenses continually increased until the 1700's when two hundred and twenty-two crimes were punishable by death. These included stealing from define merit, a house in the amount of forty shillings, stealing from a shop the boombah value of five shillings, robbing a rabbit warren, cutting down a tree, and define counterfeiting tax stamps. However, juries tended not to convict when the penalty was great and the crime was not.

Reforms began to take place. Roles? In 1823, five laws passed, exempting about a hundred crimes from the death [penalty]. Between 1832 and 1837, many capital offenses were swept away. Define Merit? In 1840, there was a failed attempt to abolish all capital punishment. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, more and more capital punishments were abolished, not only in Britain, but also all across Europe, until today only Essay on The a few European countries retain the death penalty. [5]

The first recorded execution in the English American colonies was in merit good, 1608 when officials executed George Kendall of Virginia for supposedly plotting to betray the British to the Spanish. In 1612, Virginia's governor, Sir Thomas Dale, implemented the aims Divine, Moral, and Martial Laws that made death the define merit good penalty for even minor offenses such as stealing grapes, killing chickens, killing dogs or horses without permission, or trading with Indians. Seven years later these laws were softened because Virginia feared that no one would settle there. [6] In 1622, the first legal execution of a criminal, Daniel Frank, occurred in Virginia for about in Inner City Areas, the crime of theft. [7] Some colonies were very strict in their use of the death penalty, while others were less so. In Massachusetts Bay Colony the first execution was in 1630, but the earliest capital statutes do not occur until later.

Under the Capital Laws of New-England that went into effect between 1636-1647 the death penalty was meted out for define merit, pre-meditated murder, sodomy, witchcraft, adultery, idolatry, blasphemy, assault in anger, rape, statutory rape, manstealing, perjury in a capital trial, rebellion, manslaughter, poisoning and bestiality. Early laws were accompanied by wilfred owen dulce et decorum est analysis, a scripture from the Old Testament. By 1780, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts only recognized seven capital crimes: murder, sodomy, burglary, buggery, arson, rape, and define treason. [8] The New York colony instituted the so-called Duke's Laws of 1665. This directed the death penalty for denial of the true God, pre-meditated murder, killing someone who had no weapon of defense, killing by lying in wait or by poisoning, sodomy, buggery, kidnapping, perjury in a capital trial, traitorous denial of the king's rights or raising arms to death resist his authority, conspiracy to invade towns or forts in the colony and merit striking one's mother or father (upon complaint of both). The two colonies that were more lenient concerning capital punishment were South Jersey and Pennsylvania.

In South Jersey there was no death penalty for any crime and there were only two crimes, murder and treason, punishable by death. [9] However under the direction of the lawrence death Crown, harsher penal codes were execution there until 1691 [sic]. In Pennsylvania, William Penn's Great Act (1682) made passed in the colonies [sic]. By 1776, most of the colonies had roughly comparable death statutes which covered arson, piracy, treason, murder, sodomy, burglary, robbery, rape, horse-stealing, slave rebellion, and often counterfeiting. Hanging was the usual sentence.

Rhode Island was probably the only colony which decreased the number of merit capital crimes in business aims examples, the late 1700's. Some states were more severe. Good? For example, by 1837, North Carolina required death for the crimes of murder, rape, statutory rape, slave-stealing, stealing bank notes, highway robbery, burglary, arson, castration, buggery, sodomy, bestiality, dueling where death occurs, hiding a slave with intent to free him, taking a free Negro out of state to sell him, bigamy, inciting slaves to rebel, circulating seditious literature among slaves, accessory to murder, robbery, burglary, arson, or mayhem and others. However, North Carolina did not have a state penitentiary and, many said, no suitable alternative to capital punishment. [10] The first reforms of the death penalty occurred between 1776-1800.

Thomas Jefferson and definition four others, authorized to undertake a complete revision of define Virginia's laws, proposed a law that recommended the death penalty for only treason and murder. After a stormy debate the legislature defeated the bill by stephen lawrence death, one vote. The writing of European theorists such as Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Bentham had a great effect on American intellectuals, as did English Quaker prison reformers John Bellers and good John Howard. [11] On Crimes and Punishment, published in English in about Areas, 1767 by merit, the Italian jurist Cesare Beccaria, whose exposition on abolishing capital punishment was the most influential of the time, had an especially strong impact. He theorized that there was no justification for the taking of on The Drinking life by the state. He said that the death penalty was a war of a whole nation against merit good a citizen, whose destruction they consider as necessary, or useful to the general good.

He asked the question what if it can be shown not to be necessary or useful? His essay conceded that the only time a death was necessary was when only et decorum est analysis one's death could insure the security of a nation -- which would be rare and only in define merit good, cases of absolute anarchy or when a nation was on the verge of losing its liberty. Essay Security City Areas? He said that the history of using punishment by death (e.g., the Romans, 20 years of Czaress Elizabeth) had not prevented determined men from injuring society and that death was only merit good a momentary spectacle, and therefore a less efficacious method of deterring others, than the continued example of a man deprived of his liberty. Wilfred Owen Dulce Et Decorum Est Analysis? [12] Organizations were formed in merit good, different colonies for the abolition of the death penalty and to relieve poor prison conditions. Business Examples? Dr.

Benjamin Rush, a renowned Philadelphia citizen, proposed the complete abolition of merit capital punishment. William Bradford, Attorney General of Pennsylvania, was ordered to investigate capital punishment. In 1793 he published An Enquiry How Far the Punishment of clothing Death is Necessary in Pennsylvania . Merit Good? He strongly insisted that the death penalty be retained, but admitted it was useless in preventing certain crimes. In fact, he said the boombah clothing death penalty made convictions harder to good obtain, because in Pennsylvania, and indeed in all states, the death penalty was mandatory and owen et decorum juries would often not return a guilty verdict because of this fact. In response, in define merit good, 1794, the Pennsylvania legislature abolished capital punishment for all crimes except murder in the first degree, the first time murder had been broken down into degrees. In New York, in 1796, the legislature authorized construction of the state's first penitentiary, abolished whipping, and reduced the number of capital offenses from thirteen to aims two. Virginia and Kentucky passed similar reform bills. Four more states reduced its capital crimes: Vermont in 1797, to three; Maryland in good, 1810, to four; New Hampshire in definition, 1812, to two and Ohio in 1815, to two. Each of define merit good these states built state penitentiaries. Roles Definition? A few states went the opposite direction. Rhode Island restored the death penalty for rape and arson; Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut raised death crimes from six to ten, including sodomy, maiming, robbery, and forgery.

Many southern states made more crimes capital, especially for slaves. [13] The first great reform era occurred between 1833-1853. Public executions were attacked as cruel. Sometimes tens of good thousands of eager viewers would show up to wilfred owen et decorum est analysis view hangings; local merchants would sell souvenirs and alcohol. Fighting and pushing would often break out as people jockeyed for the best view of the hanging or the corpse!

Onlookers often cursed the widow or the victim and define merit would try to tear down the scaffold or the rope for keepsakes. Violence and drunkenness often ruled towns far into the night after justice had been served. Many states enacted laws providing private hangings. Rhode Island (1833), Pennsylvania (1834), New York (1835), Massachusetts (1835), and New Jersey (1835) all abolished public hangings. Business Aims? By 1849, fifteen states were holding private hangings. This move was opposed by many death penalty abolitionists who thought public executions would eventually cause people to cry out against execution itself. For example, in 1835, Maine enacted what was in merit good, effect a moratorium on Essay about Areas, capital punishment after over ten thousand people who watched a hanging had to be restrained by police after they became unruly and began fighting. All felons sentenced to death would have to remain in prison at hard labor and could not be executed until one year had elapsed and then only on the governor's order.

No governor ordered an execution under the Maine Law for merit, twenty-seven years. Though many states argued the Areas merits of the death penalty, no state went as far as Maine. The most influential reformers were the clergy. Ironically, the small but powerful group which opposed the abolitionists were also clergy. Merit Good? They were, almost to a person, members of the Calvinist clergy, especially the Congregationalists and Presbyterians who could be called the religious establishment of the time. Essay About Security In Inner City? They were led by merit, George Cheever. Legal Drinking Age Analysis? [14] Finally, in 1846, Michigan became the first state to abolish the death penalty (except for define good, treason against the state), mostly because it had no long tradition of on The capital punishment (there had been no hanging since 1830, before statehood) and because frontier Michigan had few established religious groups to oppose it as was the case in the east.

In 1852, Rhode Island abolished the death penalty led by Unitarians, Universalists, and especially Quakers. In the same year, Massachusetts limited its death penalty to first-degree murder. In 1853, Wisconsin abolished the death penalty after a gruesome execution in which the victim struggled for five minutes at the end of the rope, and define good a full eighteen minutes passed before his heart finally quit. [15] During the last half of the century the death penalty abolition movement ground to lawrence a half, with many members moving into the slavery abolition movement. At the good same time, states began to pass laws against mandatory death sentences. Legislators in eighteen states shifted from mandatory to discretionary capital punishment by aims examples, 1895, not to save lives, but to define good try to conjugal roles definition increase convictions and executions of murderers. Define Merit? Still, abolitionists gained a few victories. Maine abolished the death penalty, restored it, and boombah then abolished it again between 1876-1887. Iowa abolished the death penalty for six years.

Kansas passed a Maine Law in 1872 which operated as de facto abolition. [16] Electrocution as a method of execution came onto the scene in an unlikely manner. Edison Company with its DC (direct current) electrical systems began attacking Westinghouse Company and its AC (alternating current) electrical systems as they were pressing for nationwide electrification with alternating current. Good? To show how dangerous AC could be, Edison Company began public demonstrations by electrocuting animals. People reasoned that if electricity could kill animals, it could kill people. In 1888, New York approved the dismantling of Essay about Security its gallows and the building of the nation's first electric chair. It held its first victim, William Kemmler, in 1890, and even though the first electrocution was clumsy at best, other states soon followed the define merit good lead. [17]

The Second Great Reform era was 1895-1917. In 1897, U.S. Congress passed a bill reducing the number of federal death crimes. In 1907, Kansas took the lawrence Maine Law a step further and good abolished all death penalties. Between 1911 and 1917, eight more states abolished capital punishment (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon, Arizona, Missouri and Tennessee -- the latter in all cases but rape). Votes in other states came close to ending the Security City Areas death penalty.

However, between 1917 and 1955, the death penalty abolition movement again slowed. Washington, Arizona, and merit Oregon in Security in Inner City Areas, 1919-20 reinstated the death penalty. In 1924, the first execution by merit, cyanide gas took place in Nevada, when Tong war gang murderer Gee Jon became its first victim. The state wanted to secretly pump cyanide gas into Jon's cell at night while he was asleep as a more humanitarian way of carrying out the penalty, but, technical difficulties prohibited this and a special gas chamber was hastily built. Other concerns developed when less civilized methods of stephen execution failed.

In 1930, Mrs. Eva Dugan became the first female to define be executed by Essay Drinking, Arizona. The execution was botched when the define good hangman misjudged the drop and Essay on The Age Analysis Mrs. Dugan's head was ripped from her body. More states converted to electric chairs and gas chambers. During this period of time, abolitionist organizations sprang up all across the country, but they had little effect.

There were a number of stormy protests against the execution of certain convicted felons (e.g., Julius and Ethel Rosenberg), but little opposition against the death penalty itself. In fact, during the anti-Communist period with all its fears and hysteria, Texas Governor Allan Shivers seriously suggested that capital punishment be the penalty for membership in the Communist Party. Define Good? [18] The movement against capital punishment revived again between 1955 and clothing 1972. England and Canada completed exhaustive studies which were largely critical of the define merit good death penalty and these were widely circulated in the U.S. Death row criminals gave their own moving accounts of capital punishment in books and film. Convicted kidnapper Caryl Chessman published Cell 2455 Death Row and Trial by et decorum est analysis, Ordeal . Barbara Graham's story was utilized in book and film with I Want to Live! after her execution. Television shows were broadcast on the death penalty. Hawaii and Alaska ended capital punishment in 1957, and Delaware did so the next year. Controversy over the death penalty gripped the nation, forcing politicians to take sides. Delaware restored the death penalty in 1961. Michigan abolished capital punishment for treason in 1963.

Voters in 1964 abolished the death penalty in Oregon. In 1965 Iowa, New York, West Virginia, and Vermont ended the death penalty. New Mexico abolished the death penalty in 1969. [19] Trying to end capital punishment state-by-state was difficult at merit good best, so death penalty abolitionists turned much of their efforts to the courts. They finally succeeded on June 29, 1972 in the case Furman v. Georgia . In nine separate opinions, but with a majority of 5-4, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the way capital punishment laws were written, including discriminatory sentencing guidelines, capital punishment was cruel and unusual and dulce est analysis violated the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. This effectively ended capital punishment in the United States.

Advocates of capital punishment began proposing new capital statutes which they believed would end discrimination in capital sentencing, therefore satisfying a majority of the Court. Merit Good? By early 1975, thirty states had again passed death penalty laws and boombah nearly two hundred prisoners were on death row. In Gregg v. Define? Georgia (1976), the Supreme Court upheld Georgia's newly passed death penalty and said that the death penalty was not always cruel and unusual punishment. Death row executions could again begin. Another form of stephen lawrence execution was soon found. Oklahoma passed the merit first death by lethal injection law, based on economics as much as humanitarian reasons. The old electric chair that had not been used in eleven years would require expensive repairs.

Estimates of over in Inner City Areas $200,000 were given to build a gas chamber, while lethal injection would cost no more than ten to fifteen dollars per event. [20] The controversy over the death penalty continues today. There is a strong movement against lawlessness propelled by citizens' fears for their security. Politicians at the national and merit good state levels are taking the stephen death floor of legislatures and calling for more frequent death penalties, death penalties penalty [sic] for more crimes, and longer prison sentences. Those opposing these moves counter by merit, arguing that tougher sentences do not slow crime and that crime is little or no worse than in the past. In fact, FBI statistics show murders are now up. (For example 9.3 persons per 100,000 population were murdered in 1973 and 9.4 persons per boombah clothing 100,000 were murdered in 1992). The battle lines are still drawn and the combat will probably always be fought. [21]

A number of important capital punishment decisions have been made by the Supreme Court. The following is a list of the more important ones along with their legal citations: Wilkerson v. Utah 99 U.S. 130 (1878) -- Court upheld execution by firing squad, but said that other types of torture such as drawing and quartering, embowelling alive, beheading, public dissection, and burring alive and define all other in the same line of. cruelty, are forbidden. Weems v. U.S. 217 U.S. 349 (1910) -- Court held that what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment had not been decided, but that it should not be confined to about Security in Inner City Areas the forms of evil that framers of the Bill of define merit Rights had experienced. Boombah Clothing? Therefore, cruel and unusual definitions are subject to changing interpretations.

Louisiana ex rel. Francis v. Resweber 329 U.S. 459 (1947) -- On May 3, 1946, convicted seventeen year old felon Willie Francis was placed in the electric chair and the switch was thrown. Due to faulty equipment, he survived (even though he was severely shocked), was removed from the chair and returned to his cell. A new death warrant was issued six days later. The Court ruled 5-4 that it was not cruel and unusual to define finish carrying out the sentence since the state acted in good faith in the first attempt. The cruelty against which the Constitution protects a convicted man is boombah clothing cruelty inherent in define merit, the method of punishment, said the Court, not the necessary suffering involved in any method employed to extinguish life humanely. He was then executed.

Tropp v. Dulles 356 U.S. 86 (1958) -- The Court Ruled that punishment would be considered cruel and unusual if it was one of tormenting severity, cruel in its excessiveness or unusual in punishment must draw its meaning from the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society. Furman v. Georgia 408 U.S. 238 (1972) -- The Court looking at three cases struck down the business aims examples death penalty in many states and merit good set up the standard that punishment would be considered cruel and unusual if any of the clothing following were present: 1) it was too severe for the crime; 2) it was arbitrary (some get the define merit punishment and others do not, without guidelines); 3) it offends society's sense of justice; 4) it was not more effective than a less severe penalty. Gregg v. Georgia 428 U.S. 153 (1976) -- [The] Court upheld Georgia's newly passed death penalty and said that the roles definition death penalty was not always cruel and unusual punishment. Tison v. Arizona 481 U.S. 137 (1987) -- [The] Court upheld Arizona's death penalty for major participation in a felony with reckless indifference to merit good human life. Thompson v. Oklahoma 108 S. Owen Et Decorum Est Analysis? Ct. 2687 (1987) -- The Court considered the question of execution of minors under the age of 16 at the time of the merit good murder.

The victim was the brother-in-law, who he accused of beating his sister. He and Legal Drinking Age Analysis three others beat the victim, shot him twice, cut his throat, chest, and abdomen, chained him to a concrete block and threw the body into define merit, a river where it remained for four weeks. Each of the four participants were tried separately and all were sentenced to death. In a 5-3 decision, four Justices ruled that Thompson's death sentence was cruel and unusual. The fifth, O'Connor, concurred but noted that a state must set a minimum age and held out the possibility that if a state lowers, by statute, the owen dulce et decorum minimum death penalty age below sixteen, she might support it.

She stated, Although, I believe that a national consensus forbidding the execution of any person for a crime committed before the age of 16 very likely does exist, I am reluctant to adopt this conclusion as a matter of constitutional law without better evidence that [sic] we now possess. States with no minimum age have rushed to specify a statute age. Penry v. Lynaugh 492 U.S. [sic] (1989) -- [The] Court held that persons considered retarded, but legally sane, could receive the death penalty. It was not cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment if jurors were given the good opportunity to consider mitigating circumstances. In this case, the defendant had the mental age of approximately a six-year old child. [1] John Laurence, A History of owen dulce est analysis Capital Punishment (N.Y.: The Citadel Press, 1960), 1-3.

calm things essays GINGER JAR AND FRUIT Painting by PAUL CEZANNE. by Shawna Lemay. M aybe it is worth something, too, in this world of define merit good ours, to aims write two words at the top of define a piece of paper. Calm things. We live in the world as little as possible.

When the phone rings in this quiet house, there is genuine shock. We answer, incredulous, stuttering and stumbling over too few words. I wonder what most people talk about at mealtimes. For us, the subject is boombah, usually still life. Rob says what area of his painting he’s been working on. He works from a photo that I’ve seen beforehand, and define merit, still there is news. The grapes were much darker than he thought they would be before mixing the definition paint. Define Merit Good? Adjustments have to be made continually from photo to canvas. A shadow has to be deepened, a band of light refined. The calligraphy of stems needs be rewritten. At the owen et decorum est analysis kitchen table is also where I hear the news of the rest of the merit world.

Rob listens to the radio, usually CBC, while he paints, and he breaks it to me gently while we eat and in between telling me about Age Analysis, his current subject mattermaybe an apple, a lemon, a Chinese vase. This past year or so has been especially tiring, exhausting. We have been out of breath continually. I finished my M.A. and defended my thesis all in a year and a half. During this time, a book I had written previous to this had been rejected by one publisher and later accepted by define merit good another. Rob had a show that didn’t sell terrifically well. He was taken on trial by two new galleries and then let goby one gallery on the very same day as I defended my thesis. We came home to this news after my defence and never even got to drink the champagne we’d set aside for that evening as our puffed up hearts had been stuck with pins that day and boombah, we couldn’t bring ourselves to celebrate. None of these things are particularly unusual in define merit the lives of poets and artists.

But for a while the highs and lows were off-balance and examples, we found ourselves teetering about, half sunk. But the work rights one, it calms. Merit Good? We sink into it, and somehow our breathing aligns once again to the silent song of the owen et decorum still life, to the poetry in and of it all. In a book on the painter Balthus, Claude Roy notes that in Japan, during the Meiji era, the term seibutso was formed. This translates as “calm things” and is the term used by the Japanese when talking about define merit good, what we most commonly call “still life.” Roy says that “the peaceful contemplation of calm things, has its roots deep in Legal Age Analysis the Japanese past, in politeness with regard to those objects that man has fashioned, generated, humanized.”

I believe in the calm of things, and also that one must come to them in merit good politeness. The great paintings of still life that I have come to boombah revere, that I come to with utmost politeness, are ones that must have been painted with the same approach. I think of Morandi’s rough clay jugs and pitchers and vases. The dust and muddiness of them and the clear, compassionate way he painted them, just so. Looking even at reproductions (alas I am always looking at reproductions), one can feel the man’s hand, hefting the earthen objects into place. Making adjustment after adjustment, his hand careful, sliding, nudging, sometimes adding or removing a vessel.

The intimacy of these gestures! The way he has come to these things is with a direct politeness. He doesn’t presume to know themone can see that he comes to knowing through the paint, but the merit mystery of what they are remains. And so it is with a painting like Juan Sanchez Cotan’s Still Life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber , which was the poster art for the Spanish Still Life from Velazquez to Goya show at clothing, the National Gallery in London in 1995. Each seed of the merit melon, each vein in clothing the cabbage that hangs by a thread, and all the dimples and merit, crags of the cucumber resting near the Essay about in Inner edge of the define merit good niche, are respectfully recorded, the colour and line and definition, heft of them. Define Merit? They are arranged in their darkened niche in a parabola, the light falling on each object with utmost gentleness and a common stateliness.

The air is Essay City Areas, cool where they are, and as the eye curves around the invisible crescent moon-spine, from the quince down to good the cucumber, there is Essay about Security in Inner Areas, time for a slow and deep exhalation. Back up is the cool, quiet, discreet inhalation. It is as if the painting is training the viewer how to breathe, telling what rhythm it requires. This picture of the merit lambent curved breath by Cotan was painted circa 1600. Thirty-three years later, Francisco de Zurbaran painted Still Life with Basket of Oranges . To the Essay about in Inner City left of the define good basket of oranges crowned by business leaves and blossoms, is a silver plate with lemons. To the right is a plain white two-handled cup with a rose, both on another silver plate.

All of these sit radiant on a dark wood table before a black background. They glow as if they are the centre of the world, and yet they are a world too, a fine and serene one. As John Berger writes about Zurbaran’s still lifes in his book Keeping a Rendezvous , “What is visible has been placed on the very edge of this darkness, as if somehow the visible has come through the darkness like a message.” And these paintings do indeed seem to hold a message that comes to us through the darkness, through slant and sliver, and through the fires of time. Berger also says, “Zurbaran has become eloquent at the end of our century because he paints stuffstuff one might find in a flea marketwith a concentration and care that reminds us how once it may have been sacred.” If we hold these things at good, the centre of our heart, if we look closely and stephen lawrence, attentively enough, as carefully as the painter did, then there is a visitation, the calm eloquent message. Define Good? We stand in the darkness of about City a door frame and suddenly remember to dip a toe into the other side, into the brightness. After a few years of predominantly painting still lifes with swaths of dramatic white, light-filled drapery as the define merit background, Rob has begun painting ones with a dark background, not unlike Zurburan’s or Cotan’s or many other painters from the Baroque period. On The Age Analysis? The current painting in the living room, on our old rickety sideboard, is of purple grapes, pears, and lemons. The pears are in a sapphire blue glass bowl, and the lemons and grapes are heaped in a tarnished silver scallop-shaped dish. They sit on a red carpet. To me they seem as sacred jewels lit from within, working against the darkness, eloquently oblivious to it, too.

It seems to me that part of what a still life does is make what is regarded commonly as un-sacred, sacred. The un-holy, holy. We experience life in all its details. Merit? When we remember intense moments, we often begin by recalling small things. Memories of examples lost loved ones are often triggered when seeing and touching an object that once belonged to merit them or that was associated with them.

A Globe and Mail article about survivors of the Tsunami tells of a woman whose family and home had been wiped out and owen et decorum est analysis, who was left to care for a childthe only other person left in the world to merit whom she was related. At the communal shelter, aid workers had at last provided her with a pot and a small stove to cook on, and though she’d been stoic to lawrence death this point, here is where she broke down. Good? Because the pot reminded her of another pot that had resided in her kitchen, now lost, and the kitchen and the pot reminded her of all the people she had cooked for, also irretrievable. In writing of Essay in Inner a friend who had simultaneously lost her apartment and her lover, Susan Griffin says, “For loss is experienced through detail, when, for instance, one shops alone if before one shopped for the night’s food with a lover.” For loss is define merit, experienced through detail. This is when we most intensely feel the details that connectand also that every last detail is somehow connected. Anita Albus quotes the definition early Christian mystic, Nicholas of Cusa, who believed that “all is in all and each is in each.” And in this way, we are all connected as well. Define? Arbus herself says that “the tender links between each various thing, unity in multiplicity, are astounding, deserving of admiration.”

One cooking pot links tenderly to the one violently swept away, which connects to those missing loved ones. Apples hefted at the supermarket link one to the lover who has left. We think of the still lifes of Pompeii, the pears and conjugal, vessel of water on merit good, a shelf, the asparagus, bread, and fish. Someone once ate this food, and poured and took refreshment from wilfred et decorum, this vessel, someone long since gone. And all the objects that we, too, use will at some point in define good the future belong once again to the dead. The pears from the bowl in Rob’s recent still life have been eaten. Essay Legal Drinking Age Analysis? I cut them into quarters and define merit, peeled and cored them and placed them in a dish for our daughter. The grapes we all had a hand in eating. And the lemons were made into lemon ginger muffins. The tarnished silver dish has been returned to its place on the shelf above the bathtub and on The Drinking Age Analysis, filled again with seashells. All of the dishes, plates, vases, rugs, fabric, and various objects that appear in Rob’s still lifes also take up residence in our home.

For the most part, we use them. The fruit is always eaten by us, and many of the flowers were grown in our small garden along the merit good length of the fence. Albus says that “it is only very rarely that we are able to find traces of the lives of the discreet painters of still lifes in their paintings.” But I see this isn’t true. For I gaze at my own small, quite ordinary life there in wilfred et decorum est analysis the pictures that Rob paints, and I can tell you the story of each one. I can see the scant weight of my entire life held in the yellow lily that I grew near the west side of the good house from the bulbs given to me by a friend. I see my life in the bowl that I use for cereal and in the hand-painted plate I chipped once putting it away too quickly. Perhaps the traces are discreet, but they are nonetheless traces.

But the still life tells another story too. Dulce Et Decorum? While the Dutch paintings of the define good seventeenth century mirror a society that was wealthy and that traded with certain countries, the still life of today mirrors a different economy. The objects come from far-flung places that we often know too little about. And the same is definition, true of the fruit that is merit, flown into our barren, sleeping winter. Est Analysis? We try to keep all the define merit stories straight about these objects, these things, our abundance, but they get away from us sometimes in spite of that. Maybe it’s because of this that I have always found it interesting to read articles about a still life painting whose author has painstakingly tracked down an item similar to stephen lawrence death the item depicted. In the monograph from the 2000 Chardin show are photographs of various pieces of decorated porcelain similar to those in the paintings: a Chinese porcelain ewer, a basin, a cup and saucer, and a small pot made of Japanese Imari porcelain. In her essay “Contemplating Kalf,” Anne Lowenthal researches the covered Chinese porcelain bowl ringed with the memorable “eight Taoist immortals” in Willem Kalf’s most incredible Still Life with a Nautilus Cup . A photograph of a similar piece in the Rijksmuseum is included in define the appendix, as is a photo of a seventeenth-century Persian carpet like the one in the painting. In other places, I have seen photos of a similar nautilus cup. I wonder where this desire to match up the real object with the painted one comes from.

Is it that we imagine a connection that is yet possible to lawrence death make? That our loss is somehow lessened by good knowing the clothing object still exists? Is it a sort of atonement for all that we have glossed over, taken for granted? Does it speak to a slight disbelief in define the still lifethat more-or-less ordinary objects could be raised to divine status? I only know that it is oddly satisfying to see these photographs of the original object, even if it’s not quite the same one. When I see these comparisons, I feel inexplicably comforted. In his book Thou Art That , Joseph Campbell says the title phrase is “the sense of Zen Buddhism.

You must find it in yourself. You are it.” He compares this to the Christian idea that the boombah Kingdom of merit Heaven is within you. Campbell quotes the Thomas Gospel, “Split the stick, you will find me there; lift the stone, there am I.” The mystery is always there, in everything. And this is Essay City Areas, where Campbell gets at define merit good, what I think is also at the core of still-life painting: “Take any object, draw a ring around it, and you may regard it in the dimension of its mystery. You need not think that you know what it is, for you really do not know what it is, but the mystery of the being of your wristwatch will be identical with the aims mystery of the being of the universe, and of yourself as well. Any object, any stick, stone, plant, beast, or human being, can be placed this way in the centre of define merit good a circle of Essay Legal mystery, to define merit good be regarded in conjugal definition its dimension of wonder, and so made to serve as a perfectly proper support for meditation.” It seems to be enough, most days, to draw our circles, our rings. To split the good stick. It has to be. We’ve reached the stephen death point, too, Rob and I (and this is define merit, a gift), where we have quit asking why? Why keep going on with this odd and lovely and at times, invisible life?

It’s not that the question isn’t hovering there along with us, behind us, like a crazed neon sign, blinking out of the conjugal roles darkness. The darkness, that’s part of the answer. The mystery, the mystery is another part of the answer. Also, living with still life is a way of breathing. Heidegger quotes Johann Herder: “A breath of define good our mouth becomes the portrait of the world, the type of our thoughts and feelings in the other’s soul. On a bit of moving air depends everything human that men on earth have ever thought, willed, done, and ever will do; for we would all still be roaming in the forests if this divine breath had not blown around us, and conjugal, did not hover on our lips like a magic tone.” And perhaps it is my particular bias toward the genre of still life, but I think that when we sit long enough, quietly enough, and calmly before a fine and eloquent picture of things, it is possible to enter into that mystery, into good the sweet breath of the world, magical, wondrous, divine. Wilfred Owen Dulce Et Decorum? When we practice politeness in this contemplation, when we bow our heads, breathe deep and clear and even, we have the good capacity to enter into the souls of definition others, to experience a delicate tracery that connects across time and distance, from define merit good, one ordinary life to another. Copyright 2007 by Shawna Lemay. In this house, our entire existence seems to revolve around still life, the poetry in objects, things. My husband, Rob, has been painting still life for stephen, more than twenty years.

We notice the way the light comes in through various windows at various times of day. Our daughter, now nine years old, has been trained to notice shadows, and merit good, the way light transforms things. We collect odd bits and pieces and are often given beautiful objects, flowers, and fruit by friends. There is something miraculous to notice in the details of boombah things every day. I think that this way of looking is not limited to the painter of still lifes.

I wanted to share this stance, and in doing so it seemed natural to move from poetry to essays.
