This essay is dedicated to an unlucky generation of students, chastised for being more polite, less rebellious, and less curious than their parents, and misunderstood by almost everyone else — including Mr. Monsters Film? I didn’t write this essay to contest Perlstein’s assertion that the American college campus has lost its political and cultural centrality; the college experience is less critical to dr congo conflict, the nation than it was a generation ago. Only he’s asking the wrong question, and he’s sympathizing with the wrong people. As anyone familiar with organizational behavior knows, it is conflict, a widely-accepted theory that any one department can exhibit the symptoms of a problem that involves multiple players. The American college campus may be bearing the brunt of the symptoms, but those looking to remedy the problem would be naive to start there. Perlstein would be better served by challenging not the American college campus but instead the toxic high school experience that spawns it. The question, “What’s the is Smarter, matter with college,” invites Perlstein’s unconstructive description of the conditions; “What’s the matter with high school” properly redirects the investigation to the source.

Perlstein is also misguided in sympathizing with today’s “creative searchers,” as he calls them, students stifled by their anti-intellectual, conformist college environments, their only fault having been born a generation too late. Dr Congo Conflict? (Poor things!) But what about their “uncreative” counterparts, like me, who have lost their desire to think altogether? The interested turned indifferent, the loving turned lazy, the thinkers turned drinkers? What about the rest of us? The Fieldston ideal has been squelched in its tracks, and a new reality has risen in its stead. Social Contract? I implore the conflict, shapers of higher education in this country to revisit the values on which our educational system is based. Are we promoting intellectual enlightenment, or are we draining it?

Is this a system that delivers? And can you bring me back? Today’s bookstores are divided into neat subject headings: architecture, world history, mathematics, science, SAT prep… Glance at a bookstore’s legion of standardized test review books, and you’ll be confronted with just how essential college is to today’s society. But as noted author Rick Perlstein observes in pros and cons media, his article “What’s the Matter With College?” for all the supposed importance of campus life, it attracts surprisingly little attention these days, especially when compared to conflict, its salience in the Sixties and Seventies. This inevitably begs the question: “Does college still interest America?” The short answer is nationalism, no. At present, college is vitally important; it is also utterly uninteresting. Understanding the lack of a generation gap is essential to understanding why the conflict, college experience is different today than it was for those in the late 60’s… The big cultural divide happened when parents in the late 60’s, who came of age in the 50’s, were jolted by cultural changes which they couldn’t relate to: boys with long hair, sex being OK (even for girls), kids taking drugs, rock stars replacing sports stars, The Beatles replacing Frank Sinatra, kids forsaking traditional religion for eastern philosophies. All of which was earth shattering for those who came of age in the 50’s; it was a total bombardment of their cultural references. Compare that to subsequent generations, where rock music-listening-and-drug-taking kids grow up and become parents of rock music-listening-drug-taking-kids. Where’s the definition political science, cultural shock? There isn’t one.

That might explain, at least in dr congo, part, why those subsequent generations had nothing to revolt against in college–they and their parents shared the same culture. I’m 52 years old, attending college full time and the lack of a generation gap between me and my twenty-something year-old classmates is striking. I had concerns about returning to media, college, among them wondering how I was going to adjust to being around people so much younger than me. But you know what? For the dr congo, most part those concerns were unfounded. I mean was it awkward at first? I see people who are engaged in learning and who are there to prepare for conflict, life in ways other than just getting their degree and entering the job market. I don’t think the education I’m getting at Evergreen is less because there are no violent demonstrations or people burning down buildings on campus. And I don’t think it’s true there must be a cultural crisis, and related turmoil, in order for college students–young or old–to benefit from a college education. “Education” should be the key word, that should be your focus as a college student–if you put in the time and energy to do it seriously you won’t have time to stay up all night pondering whether or not your education is suffering because you’re not coming off age in the mist of a cultural crisis.

Most of us claim to believe in change–that it’s a good and necessary part of life–but we want it on our own terms: we want to control it. At certain times some of us want it to stop, to halt–we want to preserve the and cons, status quo. However we can’t have it both ways: if we believe that change is dr congo, a good thing then we can’t dismiss the present because it’s not the same as the past…like those who suggest that colleges today are less because they’re not like they were in the late 60’s (and the irony is, didn’t colleges like Berkley become what they were because of change?). Though Smith women are typically vocal with their beliefs, they need not open their mouths- their mere presence, which typically defies feminine stereotypes, makes a statement. Their presence also provoked GQ Magazine to rank Smith among the top ten places where NOT to find smart, beautiful women, demonstrating how society views controversial students. Perlstein, rather, was likely critiquing prestigious national university students who once dreamed of a better world, but today, seem to dr congo conflict, dream of and cons media essay landing a job at McKinsey #038; Company. In fact, according to the 2006 College Newspaper Readership, only 2% of college students never read the news. The lack of explicit dissidence on campuses, thus, does not occur as a result of ignorance; rather, increased diversity and social networking may be responsible for conflict, the cessation of extreme campus controversy. It seems that every university’s admissions office begins each year celebrating the unprecedented diversity of their incoming class. This increasing diversity in universities is paralleled by a growing emphasis on social networking.
