Book Review of 1491 by Charles C. Mann Essay. With 1491:New Revelations of the slavery, Americas Before Columbus Charles C. Mann has written an the necklace extremely interesting and controversial book. Beginning in 1983 Mann began to black slavery in america become aware that research had indicated the picnic essay, commonly held view of the settling of the black in america, Americas was wrong. Picnic Essay? The commonly held and taught belief that the Americas were inhabited by people who crossed the Bering Sea from Europe about 13,000 years ago was wrong. Allegedly these people lived in slavery, small, isolated groups that had little impact on the environment. Instead Mann, with considerable documentation and research by scientists, archeologists and geographers supporting this view, argues that the irony, Americas were inhabited thousands of years earlier, existed in far larger numbers, and had been #8220;successful at imposing their will on black the landscape that in does sex appeal mean, 1492 Columbus set foot in a hemisphere thoroughly marked by humankind#8221; (Mann, 1491 , 4). Spurred by what he had seen and read and by the fact that his son was being taught the slavery in america, same thing Mann had been taught in high school thirty years earlier, he wrote a book that #8220;explores what I [he] believes to be the what sex appeal mean, three main foci of the black slavery, new findings: Indian demography . Does Sex Appeal? . . Indian origins . . . and black slavery Indian ecology#8221; (Mann, 1491 , x-xi). The Necklace Irony? Mann begins his book by slavery in america discussing the notion of the #8220;Noble Savage,#8221; a concept that began in the early sixteenth century.

This position is the notion that the indigenous people of the mcdonalds, Americas lived an idyllic life prior to the arrival of in america, Columbus or were savage barbarians who did nothing constructive. Mann cites Bartolome de Las Casas a conquistador who had visited the mcdonalds customers, Americas who believed #8220;Indians were natural creatures who dwelt, gentle as cows . . . Black? waiting for millenniafor Christian instruction#8221; (Mann, 1491 , 12-14). In essence this view is that of margaret sanger speech, a colonist who came to the Americas looking for black slavery, signs of the Old World. Since the Native Americans apparently did not have as dramatic an mcdonalds customers impact on black in america the environment subsequent generations viewed the pre-Colombian people as either innocents or as barbarians. Both accounts showed the prejudice that these people lacked #8220;agencythey were not actors in their own right, but passive recipients of whatever windfalls or disasters happenstance put in their way#8221; (Mann, 1491, 12). It would be interesting to examine the sanger, European migration into the Americas from the black in america, point of view of the indigenous people. Mann cites studies that have called into question the notion that Native Americans first arrived in the Americas 13,000 years ago over a land bridge in the Bering Straits and slowly migrated drifted south and mcdonalds customers east until they populated the black slavery in america, Americas. In 1987 people who had supported this view publicly admitted that there is clear evidence of human habitation in marketing, Chile more than 12,000 years ago.

Consequently it is unlikely that natives would have migrated more than 7,000 miles in in america, less than a millennium leaving people in Role in World War Two?, their wake to black in america form new groups of people who would create their own culture. Picnic Essay? In addition there is evidence suggesting habitation in Chile more than 20,000 years ago. Further exploration has revealed numerous indications of large civilizations throughout Mesoamerica and black in america South America that had existed and sex appeal mean ended well before the sixteen century. According to Mann the current view among scholars is that the Western Hemisphere was #8220;a thriving, stunningly diverse place, a tumult of languages, trade, and slavery in america culture, a region where tens of the necklace irony, millions of people loved and hated and black in america worshipped as people do everywhere#8221; (Mann, 1491, 26-27). According to a 1999 United Nations estimate, the population of the earth in the beginning of the main of washington's farewell address, sixteenth century was about 500 million. Estimates by black slavery in america Dobyns and others indicate that by irony 1630, between 80 and 100 million Native Americans had been killed by a variety of epidemics including small pox, typhus, and slavery in america influenza. These numbers suggest that nearly one fifth of the Play States World War Two?, world#8217;s population was killed by disease in the one hundred and fifty years after the arrival of black slavery in america, Columbus (Mann, 1491 , 94-96).

According to Mann in 1491 the irony, Inka (or Inca as it is slavery in america more commonly spelled) was the largest empire on speech the planet. It was bigger than China, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and slavery bigger by far than any European state. It extended for more than thirty-two degrees of latitude (the United States has a latitude length of approximately twenty-five degrees of latitude though of margaret sanger, course a much wider degree of black, longitude). Speech? The Inka had a goal that was remarkably similar to black the Europeans; they want to #8220;knit the did U.S. Propaganda Play the United States Joining, different groups of South America . . Black? . into mcdonalds customers a single bureaucratic framework under the black in america, direct rule of the What Role the United World War Two?, emperor#8221;(Mann, 1491, 66). They wanted to meld together the slavery in america, people#8217;s religion, economics, and arts. Marketing Factors? At time they were brutal.

They would remove people from their homelands by black in america means of margaret sanger speech, a road system of approximately 25,000 miles, the slavery, longest in main points of washington's farewell address, the world and locate them to live with and work with other people who had also been displaced. They developed a system of accounting that used ropes with knots in black slavery, a way remarkably similar to the binary mathematics use in today#8217;s computers. Such an extensive and picnic essay sophisticated government hardly supports the black slavery in america, theory of the Propaganda Play, #8220;Nobel Savage#8221; living an idyllic life, doing nothing that affected their environment (Mann, 1491 , 64-82). Interestingly, among those people who are reluctant to black slavery in america accept such an early arrival of Native Americans are Indian activists who do not wish to what push the black in america, date of arrival of environment, Native Americans further into the past. Particularly in slavery, light of the evidence that supports the notion that large civilizations such as the Propaganda in the United World, Incas and slavery Aztecs were not the picnic essay, original inhabitants but had supplanted people that had arrived much earlier. If this were the case, the black in america, claim that their land was stolen by European immigrants is considerably weakened since the indigenous people at the time of the necklace, Columbus were not the slavery, first to marketing environment factors #8220;own#8221; the land, just the slavery in america, people who had most recently stolen the factors, lands from the previous populations in the Americas. According to slavery his website Mann is a journalist and mcdonalds customers writer. He is slavery a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, Science, and Wired . He was written for a wide variety of what is positivism, magazines including: The New York Times Magazine , Forbes ASAP , Smithsonian , and The Washington Post . Black? He has co-authored four other books.

Mann#8217;s writing tends to sex appeal focus on black #8220;the intersection of margaret sanger, science, technology, and commerce.#8221; He is a three time National Magazine Award finalist and has received numerous awards from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of black in america, Physics, the marketing environment, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Margaret Sanger Foundation. Mann#8217;s credentials indicate that he is a well qualified writer and black in america does careful research. Customers? Mann#8217;s writing has a liberal edge to it that often seeks to correct common perceptions about the slavery in america, topics he chooses to write about: in this case the did U.S. Play in States War Two?, life of Native Americans before the arrival of Columbus. 1491 is a well-written, well-organized book. Mann provides a survey of research since the early 1950s when the in america, #8220;Noble Savage#8221; theory of Native Americans was first popularized. Although Mann clearly has a position he wants to convey, he provides a fair presentation of other positions and explains why he believes the #8220;Noble Savage#8221; theory does not account for many discoveries and recent research. He writes in sex appeal mean, a very readable style without the many subordinate clauses and circumlocutions professional scholars are often given to. A nice feature of the book is the black slavery, inclusion of maps and sanger pictures located throughout the book instead of placing the black, maps on farewell address the flyleaf and black slavery in america having the pictures grouped together in the middle. Consequently, the impact of the pictures and environment maps is greater because they are pertinent to black in america the nearby text. Mcdonalds Customers? Mann provides ample endnotes both citation and explanatory notes that add to the authenticity of the text.

The bibliography is comprehensive and black lists use of main points of washington's address, a variety of scholarly journals from such disciplines as anthropology, geography, history and archeology among others. Mann#8217;s writing is black slavery convincing. He provides considerable recently discovered information that contradicts the Noble Savage theory. It is customers apparent that people have lived throughout the Americas for a much longer time than the 13,000 years conventionally taught. Although future research and advanced technology will likely reveal new details and correct other errors, it is black clear to that the indigenous people existed in much more sophisticated societies and in much larger numbers that has been believed. University/College: University of the necklace irony, Arkansas System. Black? Type of irony, paper: Thesis/Dissertation Chapter.

If you are a student assigned to read Oedipus the King, and perhaps also to comment on mcdonalds customers, Aristotle's ideas about black slavery tragedy and tragic flaws, this site will help you get started.

Warning: This is NOT a family site, and Sophocles is NOT family entertainment. Oedipus the King is a monument to Sophocles's dramatic genius, and to the freedom of margaret sanger speech Athenian thought. Sophocles himself served as an army general. Two of his plays (Ajax and Philoctetes) are performed today to help people understand post-traumatic stress disorder, suffered by good people who have undergone life's most horrible experiences. Oedipus the King develops a shocking -- perhaps even immoral -- idea about a human being's ultimate relationship to the universe. Whether Sophocles's idea is true, or whether he believed it, are for slavery, you to decide. Commentators on Sophocles, beginning with Aristotle, have tried to cover over the obvious. This explains the nonsense about tragic flaws and hybris.

We don't know whether there was a historical Oedipus. Oedipus means swollen feet. The Greeks pronounced it oy-DEEP-us. Oed- is the same root as oedema / edema (tissue swelling; the British preserve the irony initial o), while -pus is feet (hence octopus, the eight-footed animal.) Laius and slavery in america Jocasta were king and queen of Thebes, a town in Greece. One day, they had a baby boy. An oracle prophesied that the boy would grow up and kill his father and marry his mother. The Necklace Irony. To thwart the prophecy, Laius and Jocasta decided to kill their baby. In those days, it was usual to leave an unwanted or defective baby in the wilderness.

Laius and slavery in america Jocasta did this. Customers. To be extra-sure, they pierced his little feet and tied them together. (Don't worry about why they bound or pierced the baby's feet, which would not have been necessary to in america, guarantee the abandoned child's death. It may have been introduced to explain the hero's name. It also helps later to confirm Oedipus's true identity.) A kindly shepherd found the baby. Points Of Washington's. He gave the baby to a friend, who took it to Corinth, another town. (Corinth reappears in the New Testament.) The king and queen of Corinth couldn't have a baby of their own. So they adopted the foundling. Nobody ever told little Oedipus that his mother was never pregnant. One day, after he had grown up, a drunk mentioned his being adopted. Oedipus questioned his parents, but they denied it.

Oedipus visited various oracles to find out black whether he was really adopted. Margaret. All the oracles told him instead that he would kill his father and marry his mother. (None of this makes much sense. Black. Again, don't worry about it. This is customers a folk tale.) To thwart the oracles, Oedipus left Corinth permanently. (Again, don't worry. Yes, Oedipus should have considered that, since he might be adopted, any older man might be his father and any older woman his mother. Slavery. But this is a folk tale.) Travelling the mcdonalds customers roads, Oedipus got into a traffic squabble and killed a stranger who (unknown to him) was King Laius. In one version, there was a dispute over right-of-way on a bridge.

In those days, high rank got to go first, Oedipus identified himself as heir to the throne of Corinth, and for some reason (again, don't worry about it) Laius's people simply attacked instead of explaining that he was king of Thebes. Some versions say that the rude Laius drove over Oedipus's sore foot, making him lose his temper. Soon Oedipus's smarts saved the town of black in america Thebes, and he was made king. (In a folk-tale within a folk-tale, Oedipus solved the mcdonalds Riddle of the black slavery Sphinx. What animal has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? Of course the answer is a human being -- babies crawl and old folks use walking sticks.) Oedipus married Laius's widow, Queen Jocasta. He ruled well, and mcdonalds they had four children. Eventually, Oedipus and Jocasta found out in america what had really happened. (You must assume that accidentally killing your father and marrying your mother is a disaster.) Jocasta committed suicide, and Oedipus blinded himself and became a wandering beggar. In the version that must have been the favorite of Sophocles's Athenian audience, Oedipus found sanctuary at farewell address Colonus, outside of Athens.

The kindness he was shown at the end made the black slavery city itself blessed. The moral of the the necklace folk tale? Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed! In Iliad XXIII, we read about black slavery one Mecisteus, who went once to Thebes after the marketing factors fall of Oedipus, to black slavery in america, attend his funeral, and he beat all the What Role did U.S. Propaganda in States Joining World War Two? people of Cadmus, evidently at black slavery in america boxing (funeral games) which is the main address subject of the passage. In the Odyssey XI's catalogue of shades, We read, I also saw fair Epicaste mother of king Oedipodes whose awful lot it was to marry her own son without suspecting it. He married her after having killed his father, but the gods proclaimed the whole story to the world; whereon he remained king of Thebes, in black, great grief for the spite the gods had borne him; but Epicaste went to the house of the mighty jailor Hades, having hanged herself for grief, and the avenging spirits haunted him as for an outraged mother -- to his ruing bitterly thereafter. That's what Homer has to say about Oedipus. I've been assured that Homer intended the main points of washington's farewell address passage to illustrate Oedipus's having the black in america tragic flaw of pride. I can't see what kind of sense this makes.

A NYU student found a personal meaning: What is the moral of this story? Don't go to a fortune teller! Let life take its course. Your fate is already written and picnic essay sealed. If you know all there is to know about black in america your life, then why bother living? You'll spend the rest of your life worrying about what's to come.

Embrace life and its surprises. Oedipus Wrecked -- humor. Wonders why Oedipus allowed himself to be made to feel so stigmatized by a mixup that wasn't his fault. Moral of the story: Being a victim of gurus, society, and picnic essay circumstances does not relieve one of the in america responsibility of thinking for picnic essay, themselves. It does make for a tragic hero, however. Sphinxes -- and a lot on the background of the story. The author is black in america with me on the hamartia business, below. Thanks for the sphinx. Long before we got civilized, ancient Europeans (Greeks, Vikings, others) were already talking about predestination.

If something was going to happen, it would happen and What did U.S. Propaganda in Joining War Two? there was nothing you could do about black slavery in america it. Why would anybody talk like this? 1. Ancient people may have been impressed (or wanted to be impressed) by speech the fulfillment of prophecies. In our own world, most predictions by supposed psychics simply don't come true. But people want to believe in the supernatural, and slavery in america people like to tell each other about the rare occasions when something happens that a psychic said would happen. So money-making psychics make lots of predictions and keep them vague. People have such a strong desire to believe in the power of points supernatural prediction that they even invent stories of psychic predictions being fulfilled. The most famous example (Nostradamus and the gray monk in black slavery in america, Varennes woods) continues to be told, even though the tale of Louis XVI being disguised as a monk when he was captured there is just a lie. You'll need to decide for yourself whether prophecies of religionists (past or present) come true today, or have ever come true. Some Christians have taught that the Greek oracles were successful because they were diabolic, and that they went silent on the first Christmas (for example, Milton's Hymn on sanger speech, the Morning of slavery Christ's Nativity).

People want to believe in oracles. 2. Believing in predestination frees people from worry. Talking about unalterable destiny is extremely popular among soldiers going into battle -- a powerful antidote to obessive fear that would slow or distract a warrior. Soldiers tell each other, If the main points of washington's farewell bullet has your name on it, you will die. This seems to spur them on to bravery, self-sacrifice, peace-of-mind, and warm camaraderie.

Talk about fate, predestination, and in america so forth has found its way into Role did U.S. Play in Joining War Two?, warriors' tales across many cultures. In the Iliad , even Zeus (? same word as theos or God) is sometimes subject to Fate (though sometimes Zeus is black in america fate). We also see this in Propaganda Play in the United Joining World War Two?, peacetime, whenever people face frightful conflict. A Calvinist friend of mine who struggled with his sexual issues told me how comforted he felt knowing God had chosen him anyway. Black Slavery In America. For some reason that I do not understand, he could believe in this.

He could not believe that he was loved by God as His creation, or loved by mcdonalds customers God for the sake of slavery Jesus, or even that his sexual orientation might not be the crime that he'd been made to believe it was. Again, I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm glad he could find a formulation that brought him comfort. Most Christians believe that we are responsible for our behavior even though God knows what we will do. So Christians have argued about main farewell address predestination from black New Testament days. Luke says that the people who chose Christ were predestined to do so. Main. Dante asks the blessed souls in heaven about predestination, and is told they don't know the answer, either. Martin Luther spent much of his youth obsessing over how he was unable to be as good as he wanted. He found his answer not in predestination, but in slavery, God's free gift of grace in Christ. For him, this was a comfort and assurance. If you want to know whether you are predestined to be saved, just say your prayers. Then you will know you are predestined for did U.S. in States Joining World, salvation.

John Calvin was horrified about the implications of predestination, but emphasized it in his teaching. Other preachers like Jonathan Spiders Edwards and the Wesleys taught that Christ had died for black slavery, everybody and that everybody had a free choice. Milton has God foresee Adam's sin, and God explains that although He foresees it, he didn't make it happen, so he is justified in mcdonalds, punishing Adam. Racine's Phaedra marked a return to themes of black slavery Greek tragedy and main of washington's farewell people being the victims of cruel destiny. Racine's milieu was Jansenism, a back-to-basics focus on hellfire and predestination that developed within Roman Catholicism. Boswell, who wrote the biography of Samuel Johnson, obsessed about predestination and became profoundly depressed thinking he could end up damned eternally. He's not the only person who's had this experience. In the US, the Free Will Baptist denomination emphasized evangelization and need to work hard to bring others to Christ, against those who thought that God's predestination made this unnecessary. Some Hindus and Buddhists have taught that a person's behavior in a past life predestines happiness or misery in slavery in america, the current one, by the laws of karma.

Individual believers may find that this frees them from customers bitterness over slavery in america life's injustices (natural and human-made). You'll need to marketing factors, decide for slavery in america, yourself whether this is speech good or bad. Belief in karma has awakened social conscience and kindness to strangers in black, those who believe that what goes around comes around. The theme of What Role Propaganda Joining World predestination continues in secular literature. Black Slavery. Chaucer (Troilus and Cressida, The Knight's Tale) deals with predestination. The former is a character study, and the two lovers seem destined for Propaganda World, trouble just because of who they are. Marlowe's Faustus and a popular fifties song proclaimed, Che sera sera -- what will be will be. Black Slavery. Ambiguous -- do we make our own decisions or not?

Prophecies that can't be thwarted are a favorite literary device, especially famous from Macbeth. Ideas about customers predestination are parodied in black in america, Tristram Shandy -- the baby is predestined to have a small nose and an ugly name despite the conscious efforts of the parents to avoid these supposed disasters. Today, fulfilled prophecies are a staple of fiction. Although the the necklace vast majority of psychic predictions in the real world are failures, they come true as plot devices on black in america, the Silver Screen. A new face of the predestination debate comes from the physicists' model of the world. Did U.S. Propaganda In The United States. At least in Newtonian physics, if you know everything about a closed system at black slavery in america one moment of time, you can predict everything that will happen in the future. Sanger Speech. If our world is really like this, then physical laws predetermine what will happen in our brains, and what we will think and do. The laws of physics (ultimately) even determine our decisions about which side to take in a college bull session about predestination versus free will. In physics, an electron can bounce like a billiard-ball but go through each of two holes like a wave. As a mainstream Christian, I'm accustomed of thinking that something can be two contrary things at the same time, and that apparent contradictions may not be real contradictions.

The Good Lord feeds the birds, but I know how birds really get their food. I give thanks to the Good Lord for the birth of a child, but nobody requests equal time for black, stork science. I know how I get sick and how I recover, and mcdonalds customers thank the Good Lord for my recovery. The bread and black wine are Christ's body and sanger speech blood -- I don't know how. The best (though not the most scholarly) answer I've heard to black in america, the Christian mystery of predestination goes something like this: When we are entering the New Jerusalem, we will see a sign overhead saying Enter of your free will. When we are inside, and look back, the reverse of the mcdonalds sign will say God chose us from slavery before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

The folk tale of Oedipus has a popular theme -- predestination. Sigmund Freud and picnic essay the Oedipus complex aren't the black slavery subject of this site. Mainstream psychiatry doesn't believe (and never believed) Freud's precise formulation. Freud observed that while there are many stories about predestination and unavoidable dooms, the story of Oedipus has gotten under people's skins since ancient times. Environment. The actual reason, of black slavery course, is that it's about dysfunctional family relationships, which really do have a lot to environment, do with behavioral/mental illness. Oedipus -- the legend, from Wikipedia. Black Slavery In America. Tells about What Play States Joining World War Two? modern versions, including some modern ribaldry. Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King for the annual festival where playwrights competed for prizes. It was a major civic occasion, with attendance expected. Sophocles the writer is phenomenally good, especially considering his era.

His writing is tight, with each phrase contributing to the whole. Slavery In America. He is full of Role did U.S. in the United States Joining World War Two? succinct observations on life. In America. And despite the mcdonalds customers limits of the black form, he often manages to make his characters seem like real individuals. The title of Propaganda Joining World War Two? our play is often given in black slavery in america, its Latin translation Oedipus Rex, rather than in points of washington's farewell, its original Greek (Oedipus Tyranneus), since the Greek term for king is the English tyrant which means a monarch who rules without the consent of the black in america people. As the play opens, the priest of Zeus and a bunch of non-speaking characters (old people, children) appear before King Oedipus with tree-branches wrapped with wool. It was evidently the custom to did U.S. Propaganda Play Joining World, do this in front of a god's altar when you wanted something urgently. Oedipus greets them as a caring, compassionate leader.

The priest explains (really for the audience's benefit) that Thebes is black in america suffering from margaret a plague. Plants, animals, and people are all dying. Black. The people know Oedipus is not a god, but they believe that some god inspired him to sanger, solve the riddle of the sphinx and save the town. And since Oedipus has been king, he has done a splendid job. So now people look to him to find a cure for the plague. Oedipus explains (really for the audience's benefit) that he has sent Creon (Jocasta's brother) to the oracle of the god Apollo at Delphi to get an answer.

He's late returning, but as soon as he gets back, Oedipus promises to slavery, do whatever the oracle says. Just then, Creon arrives. Since it's good news, he is wearing laurel leaves with berries around his head. Creon says, All's well that ends well. (I'm told that the Greeks loved irony.) Apollo said that the killer of Laius must be found and banished, and the plague will end. And Apollo has promised that a diligent investigation will reveal the killer. Oedipus asks to review the facts. All that is known is that Laius left for Delphi and never returned. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with the bodies of Laius and his crew.) There was no immediate investigation, because of the sphinx problem. One of Laius's men escaped, and the necklace irony walked back to Thebes. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with Laius's horses and chariot.) By the time he got back, Oedipus was being hailed as king. Black. The witness said Laius was killed by a gang of robbers. (We can already figure out why the witness lied. And we'll learn later that he asked immediately to be transferred away from Thebes, and has been gone ever since.)

Oedipus reflects that if the killers are still at large, they are still a danger. He decides to issue a policy statement to help find the killer. The chorus, in a song, calls on the various gods (including Triple Artemis, in her aspects as huntress, moon-goddess, and goddess of dark sorcery), to save them from the plague and from the evil god Ares, who is ordinarily the god of war but is picnic essay here the god of in america general mass death. Oedipus issues a policy statement, that whoever comes forward with information about the murder of Laius will be rewarded, and that if the killer himself confesses, he will not be punished beyond having to marketing, leave the city permanently. On the other hand, if anyone conceals the killer, Oedipus says he will be cursed. Black In America. Oedipus continues that he will pursue the investigation just as if Laius were my own father. (Irony.)

The Chorus says that Apollo ought to did U.S. Play the United Joining War Two?, come right out and black slavery in america say who the murderer is. Picnic Essay. (The Chorus's job is to black slavery, say what ordinary people think.) Oedipus says, Nobody can make the gods do what they don't want to. The chorus suggests bringing in margaret, the blind psychic, Teiresias. Especially, they hope he can find the missing witness to the killing. In those days, the Greeks believed that human psychics got their insights from the gods. There are other stories about Teiresias. As a young man, he ran into some magic snakes and got his gender changed for seven years. This enabled him to tell whether the male or the female enjoys sex more. This was a secret known only to the gods, so he was punished with permanent blindness.

Teiresias comes in. Oedipus asks his help finding the killers, ending up by saying, The greatest thing you can do with your life is to use all your special talents to help others unselfishly. Teiresias says cryptically, It's a terrible thing to be wise when there's nothing you can do. (As A.A. Milne would say later, and perhaps Oedipus too, When ignorance is black slavery in america bliss, it is folly to be wise.) Teiresias says, I want to go home.

Oedipus calls him unpatriotic. Teiresias says, Your words are wide of the mark ( hamartia ). Picnic Essay. Our expression in English is You're missing the point. (Originally an black slavery in america archery target was a point.) We'll hear about hamartia again. Teiresias continues to stonewall, and sanger speech Oedipus gets very angry. Finally Teiresias gives in, says Oedipus is the killer, and adds that he is living in shame with his closest relative. Oedipus goes ballistic and calls Teiresias some bad things based on his being blind. (Irony.) Teiresias says, You'll see soon. Oedipus understandably thinks this is a political trick to smear him, with Teiresias and slavery in america Creon in cahoots. Oedipus adds that Teiresias can't be much of picnic essay a psychic, because he hadn't been able to handle the sphinx problem. Black In America. The Chorus tells both men to irony, cool down. Teiresias leaves, predicting disaster. Slavery In America. Soon Oedipus will learn the truth and be a blind exile, leaning on his staff. The Chorus sings about the oracle at Delphi, which was supposedly the center of the world.

Gods are omniscient, but the speech chorus has its doubts about human psychics like Teiresias. Especially, they cannot believe Oedipus is a killer. Creon comes in, incensed that Oedipus would accuse him of trying to slavery, smear him. The Chorus says Oedipus is simply angry. Creon says he must be nuts. The Chorus says that to the king's faults and misbehavior, they are blind. (See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -- the norm in a non-democracy.) Oedipus comes in and accuses Creon directly of planning a coup, using a smear by irony a crooked psychic as an excuse. They exchange angry words. Oedipus asks why Teiresias never mentioned knowing the black slavery killer until today. Creon can't explain this. He defends himself from the accusation of planning a coup. (1) Being king is too much trouble. (2) Creon has other worthwhile things to do. (3) Creon has everything he needs. (4) Creon has political influence anyway. (5) Creon is picnic essay well-liked and isn't going to do an obvious wrong. You build a good reputation over a lifetime.

A single bad action ruins it. Irony. Oedipus isn't satisfied. He says he wants Creon executed for treason. The shouting-match continues until Jocasta comes in and tells them to break it up, there's too much trouble already. The Chorus says it agrees, and tells Jocasta that both men are at black in america fault. Creon leaves, and main points address Jocasta asks what's happened. Slavery In America. The Chorus talks about main farewell what a fine king Oedipus has been, and slavery says, Let's forget the whole business with Teiresias's prophecy. The Chorus uses a variant of the proverb, Let sleeping dogs lie. It's better not to ask about things that can make trouble.

Irony. Oedipus talks about it anyway. Jocasta says, Well, I don't believe in customers, psychics. I'll prove it. Laius and I were told that our baby would kill him and black in america marry me. But this never happened, because we left the baby to die in the woods. And the witness said that Laius was killed at sanger speech that place where three roads meet by robbers. Uh-oh, says Oedipus. Which three roads? Irony.

Jocasta says, It's where the slavery roads from Thebes, Delphi, and Daulis meet. Mcdonalds Customers. And it happened just before you solved the riddle of the sphinx and black slavery became king. Oedipus is marketing factors upset. He asks Zeus (chief god), What are you doing to in america, me? He asks Jocasta for a description. Jocasta says, Tall, a little gray in his hair, and you know something, he looked a lot like you. Irony. Oedipus continues his questioning. The one witness, seeing Oedipus as the new king, asked for a distant transfer. He was a good man, and Jocasta didn't know why he wanted away, but she granted his request.

Oedipus tells his story. He was going to the oracles to find out whether he was adopted. All of customers them told him simply that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Black Slavery In America. As he was traveling alone at the place Jocasta has mentioned, he met a group of men going in the opposite What did U.S. the United World War Two?, direction. The men, including the leader, started insulting him. Sophocles makes it sound like like a gang of rough men just hassling a lone stranger for in america, fun. One of the men shoved Oedipus.

Oedipus punched him back. Points Farewell. The leader struck Oedipus treacherously on the back of the head with the horse staff, Oedipus turned and hit the leader in the chest with his own staff, knocking him out of the chariot. Then Oedipus managed to kill them all except for the one who ran away. It was justifiable, self-defense. Slavery In America. But Oedipus is mcdonalds customers devastated. He says he must be the killer of Laius, and he is ashamed that he has been having sex with his victim's wife. Oedipus says This is too terrible to have happened naturally -- it must be the black malicious work of marketing environment factors some god or other.

He says he will simply leave the city, now, and in america let the plague end. He adds that he cannot go back to Corinth, for fear of killing his own father and marrying his own mother. The Chorus is deeply sympathetic to Oedipus, and appreciative of his willingness to go voluntarily into exile to save the city. They say, Before you make your final decision, try to main farewell address, find the last witness. Maybe he will exonerate you. And Oedipus notes, The witness did say it was robbers, plural.

Jocasta adds, Whatever happens, I'll never believe in psychics or oracles. Laius was prophesied to die by the hand of his own child. The Chorus sings a puzzling song about how (1) we have to obey the gods; (2) the gods's best gift is good government; (3) if the government is bad, there is no reason to be good; (4) nobody believes in oracles any more. Jocasta comes in, having visited the local shrines and left little offerings, and asks people to join her in praying for the distraught Oedipus. Black Slavery In America. He's our leader, and customers we need him now. She prays to Apollo to make this disastrous situation better. Irony. Just then, a messenger comes in from Corinth. He says Lucky Jocasta, you lucky wife! (Actually, Blessed is your marriage bed!

Irony.) The king of slavery Corinth has died, and the Corinthians have chosen Oedipus to be their new king. (Greek city-states were often elective monarchies.) Jocasta says, Great news. And Oedipus will be especially pleased, because now the oracle about him killing his father is void. You see, I was right not to believe in oracles. Irony. Oedipus comes in, hears the news, and says, Maybe the the necklace irony oracle has been fulfilled figuratively; perhaps he died of grief for my absence.

But I'm still worried about marrying my mother. Jocasta says, Forget it. Life is governed by chance, not destiny. Maybe you'll dream about marrying your mother. You should ignore dreams. Oedipus is still worried. When he explains to the messenger, the man cracks up and says, Well, I've got some good news for you. You don't have to worry about marrying the black lady you've called mother. because you're adopted! All hell breaks loose.

Oedipus questions the messenger, and irony learns the messenger had been herding sheep, had met a shepherd who had found Oedipus, had taken the baby, had taken the black in america pin out of his ankles, and main points of washington's had given him to the king and queen of Corinth to raise as their own. Oedipus is starting to wonder about what has always been wrong with his feet. Oedipus says, It's time to clear this up. Send for the other shepherd. Jocasta realizes exactly what has happened. Jocasta begs Oedipus NOT to pursue the matter. Oedipus says he has to know. (If Oedipus wasn't so intent on getting to the truth, there'd be no play.) Jocasta runs out horribly upset. Slavery. Oedipus is a little slower, and customers thinks, Perhaps she's upset to black slavery, find out picnic essay I'm not really of royal blood. But what the heck -- I'm 'Destiny's child' -- and that's something to be proud of! I'm me.

Irony. The Chorus sing a song in honor of Apollo, and of the woods where Oedipus was found. The say the spot will become famous. Perhaps Oedipus is the child of nymphs and satyrs. Irony. The other shepherd is brought in. He already has figured things out, and pretends he doesn't remember. Slavery. Then he begs the other messenger to be quiet. But Oedipus insists on the truth. It comes out. Jocasta and Laius crippled the baby and put it in customers, the woods to foil a prophecy.

Oedipus had, indeed, always wondered what was wrong with his feet. Now everybody knows the truth. Oedipus rushes out. The Chorus sings a song about how transient happiness is, what a splendid king Oedipus has been, and how Oedipus is now the victim of black slavery in america destiny. The next scene is an extremely graphic account, by an eyewitness. Jocasta ran into the bedroom, screaming. She locked the mcdonalds door from inside. A few minutes later, Oedipus came in, and broke down the door with what seemed to be supernatural strength. He found Jocasta dead, hanging. Black. Oedipus took the body down, then removed the pin that held up her dress.

He stabbed it again and again into his eyes, saying he has looked at his mother's naked body when he shouldn't, and he has learned what he now wishes he hadn't. The blood didn't merely dribble, as after a single needlestick. Of Washington's Farewell Address. It gushed on both sides. Black In America. For this to happen, the choroidal artery that enters the Propaganda Joining War Two? eye from in america behind must be severed. We can think that Oedipus has actually torn the globes from their sockets. Oedipus now begs to picnic essay, be taken out black slavery of the city (so that the plague will end), but he has no strength and no guide.

Oedipus comes in. Evidently Oedipus passed out after blinding himself, and he curses the mcdonalds customers person who resuscitated him. Black In America. The Chorus asks, How were you able to rip out did U.S. Propaganda Play Joining your eyeballs? Oedipus replies, Apollo gave me the strength to do it. Creon is the slavery new king. He is not angry, merely kind. Marketing Factors. He helps Oedipus up and black out of the city, guided by his two daughters. Staff in hand, Oedipus himself is the answer to the riddle of the sphinx. Oedipus says that some incredible destiny must surely await him. But the Chorus ends with a reflection on how transient human happiness often is: Don't say anybody is fortunate until that person is dead -- the final rest, free from picnic essay pain. (There is an echo here of Solon's words to Croesus -- don't assume that any particular life will end happily. Is the sense the same here, or different?)

What is Sophocles saying? To discern an author's intentions, look for black slavery in america, material that is not required by sanger speech the plot or intended simply to please the audience. In retelling the story of Oedipus, Sophocles goes beyond mere irony. A major theme in the play is black slavery whether one can believe in oracles and psychics. By extension, the question is whether the customers Greeks believed their own mythology. Sophocles makes a special effort to explain that Oedipus killed Laius in self-defense. More generally, Sophocles goes out of black his way to present Oedipus as an extremely capable, beloved administrator.

Conspicuously, Sophocles NEVER suggests that Oedipus has brought his destiny on himself by any ungodly pride ( hybris ) or tragic flaw ( hamartia ). The last lines seem ambiguous. Mcdonalds Customers. They could mean that the dead are more fortunate than the living, because they do not experience pain. Is life really that bad? The gods made the in america prophecies that led Oedipus into disaster. The sphinx appeared (she must have been sent by the gods), and Oedipus solved her riddle (the chorus says he must have been guided by the gods.) Teiresias could not solve the riddle, or detect the did U.S. the United States World War Two? killer -- thanks to the gods. At the beginning, Apollo's oracle simply says, Find the killer -- leading to the cruel ironies of the black in america play. Role In The United States World War Two?. Oedipus specifically says the gods set up his extraordinary misfortune.

And at the end, Apollo merely gives Oedipus the black in america strength to margaret sanger, carve his own eyes out of their sockets. In other words, Sophocles says that Oedipus's frightful misadventure is the intentional work of the gods. At the end, everybody says this. Pure and simple. Nobody even asks why. The Golden Age of Athens was a time for thinkers, scientists, inventors, and for people to share ideas freely. Greeks were very impressed with reason, and must surely have been asking whether they still believed in their mythology. Social conservatives prosecuted Socrates for expressing doubts about the in america gods, but only because they thought this would corrupt the minds of young people. (Does this sound familiar?) People have often noted that comedy and melodrama have arisen independently in many cultures, but that tragedy has its unique beginnings in Athens's golden age -- the first time that we hear people asking the tough questions about address what they really believed. The idea that Sophocles is in america putting forward is much like the dark supernatural suggestions that Stephen King offers our own doubting age.

Stephen King and his readers don't really believe in his creepy monsters. Environment. And I don't know whether Sophocles really believed the message of Oedipus the King. Sophocles is saying, Maybe the gods do exist. and are consciously and slavery elaborately MALICIOUS. This is the only reason that such terrible things could happen to people. Aristotle's Poetics are lecture notes on poetry, with a focus on tragedy. Aristotle liked to classify and evaluate things, and also liked to talk about human virtue and vice. Eventually, this got him the picnic essay best teaching job of his time, as tutor to the boy who became Alexander the slavery in america Great. Aristotle is reacting in part against Plato's objection to art and theater. Aristotle was especially interested in irony, justifying tragedy to an audience concerned with public morals. I am quoting below from the translation of the slavery in america Poetics by S.H. Barber.

After introducing his subject, Aristotle talks about the subject of the necklace tragedy. Since the objects of imitation are men in action, and these men must be either of a higher or a lower type (for moral character mainly answers to in america, these divisions, goodness and What did U.S. Propaganda Play War Two? badness being the distinguishing marks of slavery moral differences), it follows that we must represent men either as better than in real life, or as worse, or as they are. It is the points farewell address same in painting. Polygnotus depicted men as nobler than they are, Pauson as less noble, Dionysius drew them true to life. -- II. In other words, when you paint or play a person, you can idealize him, you can lampoon him, or you can try for realism. Black Slavery. Aristotle continues. The same distinction marks off Tragedy from Comedy; for customers, Comedy aims at representing men as worse, Tragedy as better than in black, actual life. -- II. Aristotle means both better-spoken and of better moral character. Aristotle goes on to explain why people make poetry in the first place.

He decides that there's an the necklace instinct to mimic things, and people like the imitations of others because it's fun to recognize things. He continues. Poetry now diverged in two directions, according to the individual character of the writers. The graver spirits imitated noble actions, and the actions of slavery good men. The more trivial sort imitated the actions of meaner persons, at first composing satires, as the former did hymns to customers, the gods and the praises of black famous men. -- IV. Aristotle adds that the tragedians were the in States Joining World successors of the epic poets, who also focused on high and black noble deeds. Aristotle wonders whether Tragedy will ever be better than it was in his era.

He tells about its origins in improvisation, and the necklace irony its recent history. Aeschylus first introduced a second actor; he diminished the importance of the Chorus, and assigned the leading part to the dialogue. Sophocles raised the number of actors to three, and added scene-painting. -- IV Originally, tragedies were songs sung by a chorus. Then one member would take the role of a character. Aeschylus added a second speaking part apart from the black in america chorus.

Sophocles added a third, and introduced stage scenery. Now Aristotle moves into the famous definition of tragedy. Tragedy, then, is an of washington's address imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of black slavery in america artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in environment factors, the form of action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions. -- VI. Tragedy must be a unified story, about something important. Aristotle would say later that tragedy should involve high-ranking people. Black In America. He doesn't give any reason that makes sense. Probably he thought that the great themes of life required larger-than-life characters. Arthur Miller would write about a salesman as a tragic hero, Willy Low-Man. And a comic hero would be Truman -- the one true-man in a world that deceives him.

The end of the margaret speech paragraph begins the business that has caused all the trouble. Purging means taking a laxative (our word cathartic for a laxative comes from the Greek term catharsis, which you already know). Black In America. You watch a tragedy to have a good cry, and get rid of your ideas about marketing environment bad things happening to good people. Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality- namely, Plot, Character, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Song. -- VI. Aristotle goes on to explain what these are. Plot: the story; the good ones focus on a single episode. Character: the personalities of the characters, as shown in their words and actions. (Considering the limitations of the form, the Greeks did a nice job of black drawing character.) Diction: the picnic essay right choice of words. Aristotle points out how effective using just the right word can be.

Thought: Arguments and exposition. Aristotle compares it to rhetoric. Spectacle: as we'd say, special effects. Not so much the black slavery in america poet's business as the stage-specialist's. Song: words joined to music. What is missing? Aristotle never mentions theme , the thoughts about mcdonalds life on which tragedies can be based.

Aristotle was a very smart person, and the Greek tragedies remain popular today, not as museum pieces, but as comments on life. Yet Aristotle is black silent on this important element of tragedy. As you continue to study literature, you'll constantly look for themes. I like Shakespeare, and the necklace like the ancient Greeks, his themes are often troubling. Macbeth gets much of its impact from its central question -- Is life really a meaningless exercise in a dog-eat-dog world? Hamlet focuses on the phoniness and meanness of black slavery in america human society.

Hamlet starts by wishing he was dead. At the end, he comes to terms with life as many modern secularists do, deciding to live and love well in an unfair world. The themes of Romeo and Juliet were radical in customers, Shakespeare's time. Black. Shakespeare changed the messsage of his source (which was a cautionary tale for teenagers to obey their parents instead of making their own decisions.) Young people should be allowed to choose their own husbands and wives. The disasters of mcdonalds young people -- even a godawful teenaged murder-suicide -- can sometimes be rightly blamed on their parents. And love gives happiness and dignity even in the worst circumstances. Antony and black in america Cleopatra asks the age-old question: Does illicit love ennoble people, or just degrade them? King Lear reaches a conclusion similar to Oedipus the King, but with the idea that unselfish human love can, at least temporarily, give beauty and meaning in a godless world.

Aristotle, the school-teacher, is actually steering his students AWAY from main points farewell address looking for themes. Aristotle goes on to say that the plot is best kept unified, without subplots, and the action not covering more then 24 hours. Subjects from black slavery in america mythology are traditional but not mandatory. (Aristotle thought people would be more willing to suspend disbelief if the stories came from accepted mythology.) If there are to be coincidences, they should seem to make sense. But again, Tragedy is an What Role in the United Joining World imitation not only of a complete action, but of events inspiring fear or pity. Such an effect is best produced when the events come on us by black in america surprise; and environment factors the effect is heightened when, at the same time, they follow as cause and effect. The tragic wonder will then be greater than if they happened of slavery themselves or by marketing factors accident; for even coincidences are most striking when they have an air of design. In America. We may instance the statue of Mitys at Argos, which fell upon What Role in the United States Joining his murderer while he was a spectator at in america a festival, and killed him. The Necklace Irony. Such events seem not to be due to mere chance. Plots, therefore, constructed on these principles are necessarily the best. -- IX. Coincidences are crowd-pleasers, and people are willing to suspend disbelief in them. Black Slavery. (People want to did U.S. Propaganda Play States Joining World War Two?, believe in magic.) A character today might say that the falling statue expressed the will of the Force.

Aristotle launches into a big discussion about simple vs. complex plots. Slavery In America. The best plots are complex, with twists or irony (he calls both of these reversal of the situation) or bombshells (recognition scenes). Aristotle describes a scene of suffering as characteristic of tragedy; it depicts somebody suffering physically or dying onstage. A perfect tragedy should, as we have seen, be arranged not on the simple but on the complex plan. It should, moreover, imitate actions which excite pity and mcdonalds fear, this being the distinctive mark of tragic imitation. It follows plainly, in the first place, that the change of fortune presented must not be the spectacle of a virtuous man brought from black slavery prosperity to adversity: for this moves neither pity nor fear; it merely shocks us. Nor, again, that of a bad man passing from adversity to prosperity: for nothing can be more alien to picnic essay, the spirit of Tragedy; it possesses no single tragic quality; it neither satisfies the moral sense nor calls forth pity or fear. Nor, again, should the downfall of the black slavery utter villain be exhibited. A plot of this kind would, doubtless, satisfy the moral sense, but it would inspire neither pity nor fear; for pity is aroused by unmerited misfortune, fear by the misfortune of a man like ourselves. Such an margaret sanger speech event, therefore, will be neither pitiful nor terrible. There remains, then, the character between these two extremes- that of in america a man who is not eminently good and just, yet whose misfortune is brought about not by vice or depravity, but by some error or frailty . He must be one who is highly renowned and prosperous -- a personage like Oedipus, Thyestes, or other illustrious men of such families. Margaret Sanger. -- XIII This passage continues to cause problems.

Plays about bad people ending up happy don't satisfy Aristotle. (Beavis and Butt-Head Do America doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of tragedy.) Plays about thoroughly bad people getting their just deserts in the end don't work because we can't identify with the black slavery bad guy. (Richard III doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, either.) Finally, Aristotle cannot imagine that a tragedy could deal with disaster befalling a completely sympathetic character. He says this would merely shock us. But Oedipus the King DOES shock us, and is intended to do so. Mcdonalds Customers. Why is Aristotle avoiding the black obvious? We'll soon see. A well-constructed plot should, therefore, be single in its issue, rather than double as some maintain. Customers. The change of fortune should be not from bad to good, but, reversely, from good to bad. It should come about as the result not of vice, but of slavery in america some great error or frailty, in a character either such as we have described, or better rather than worse. The practice of the stage bears out our view. -- XIII. By double plots, Aristotle is referring to serious plays that have a disaster in the middle, but a happy ending.

Aristotle considers these to be inferior, but admits that many people prefer them. In the second rank comes the kind of tragedy which some place first. Like the Odyssey, it has a double thread of plot, and also an opposite catastrophe for the good and for the bad. It is irony accounted the best because of the black slavery weakness of the spectators; for the poet is guided in what he writes by the wishes of speech his audience. The pleasure, however, thence derived is black in america not the true tragic pleasure. It is proper rather to margaret, Comedy, where those who, in the piece, are the deadliest enemies -- like Orestes and Aegisthus -- quit the stage as friends at the close, and in america no one slays or is slain. Customers. -- XIII This only makes sense if you share Aristotle's assumption that the purpose of serious drama is to make you have a good scare and a good cry and go back to thinking that real-life is more fair. Aristotle goes on to explain that the best plots and the best scripts themselves arouse pity and fear, and that the best plays don't even need the special effects. Fear and pity may be aroused by black slavery spectacular means; but they may also result from the inner structure of the piece, which is the better way, and indicates a superior poet. For the plot ought to be so constructed that, even without the aid of the eye, he who hears the tale told will thrill with horror and melt to pity at what takes place.

This is the impression we should receive from factors hearing the story of the Oedipus. -- XIV. Aristotle goes on. Let us then determine what are the slavery circumstances which strike us as terrible or pitiful. -- XIV They are aroused especially when people kill friends or family. The killer may or may not know what he/she is doing. It can happen onstage, or be discovered, as (Aristotle points out) in Oedipus the King. Aristotle was a product of his times. In respect of the necklace irony Character there are four things to be aimed at. First, and black slavery in america most important, it must be good. Now any speech or action that manifests moral purpose of any kind will be expressive of character: the character will be good if the purpose is good. This rule is relative to each class.

Even a woman may be good, and also a slave; though the woman may be said to be an inferior being, and the slave quite worthless. The second thing to aim at is propriety. There is a type of manly valor; but valor in a woman, or unscrupulous cleverness is inappropriate. -- XV. We do not have to be left-wing activists or injustice-collectors to despise this kind of sexism and classism. But the speech truth is that on the Greek stage, the women are as interesting, sympathetic, intelligent and black slavery in america brave as the the necklace irony men -- an obvious fact that Aristotle ignores. Aristotle goes on black in america, to say that characters should be believable, the irony kinds of people we meet in life, and that characters should be consistent. Aristotle has a problem with Euripides's Iphegenia in Aulis, which tells the black story of a sudden decision for heroic altruism. It remains to speak of Diction and Thought, the the necklace irony other parts of Tragedy having been already discussed. Concerning Thought, we may assume what is said in the Rhetoric, to which inquiry the subject more strictly belongs. Under Thought is included every effect which has to be produced by speech, the subdivisions being: proof and refutation; the excitation of the feelings, such as pity, fear, anger, and the like; the black in america suggestion of importance or its opposite.

Now, it is evident that the dramatic incidents must be treated from the same points of Role did U.S. in States view as the dramatic speeches, when the object is to evoke the slavery sense of pity, fear, importance, or probability. -- XIX. Aristotle talks about realism, which is a curious topic when talking about tales from Greek mythology. Further, if it be objected that the description is not true to What did U.S. Propaganda in the United States Joining War Two?, fact, the poet may perhaps reply, But the objects are as they ought to black slavery, be; just as Sophocles said that he drew men as they ought to Role Propaganda in States Joining World War Two?, be; Euripides, as they are. In this way the objection may be met. If, however, the slavery in america representation be of Role did U.S. States Joining War Two? neither kind, the poet may answer, This is how men say the thing is, applies to tales about the black gods. It may well be that these stories are not higher than fact nor yet true to fact: they are, very possibly, what Xenophanes says of them. -- XXV. Xenophanes came out and the necklace said it -- the tales of Greek Mythology are fiction. Aristotle knows this is important, but once again, he avoided the rough issue.

Somebody may ask you about Sophocles portraying people as they should be, and Euripides portraying people as they are. Sophocles shows Oedipus as gracious, capable, and black slavery in america altruistic. Sophocles has Ajax write a magnificent suicide note and end a useful life rather than live with the stigma of mcdonalds customers mental illness. Sophocles has Orestes kill his own mother without a lick of regret, making a speech about how everybody who breaks any law should be summarily executed. Euripides, by black slavery contrast, shows a woman murdering her two children in cold blood just to get back at their father. You can have fun examining this further. I think I understand.

Aristotle got paid to tell young people that if they lived good lives, really bad things wouldn't happen to them. To explain why they saw really bad things happening to good people onstage, Aristotle gave two (contradictory) answers. 1. When something really bad happens to a good person in a tragedy, it is because that person has a tragic flaw. 2. When something really bad happens to a good person in a tragedy, it is just make-believe. It is so you can have a good scare and margaret a good cry. This gets these emotions out of your system. Slavery. You can go back to marketing environment factors, the real world, where life is fair.

It's bunk, intended to keep people from complaining about Sophocles's devastating theme. Aristotle may have been the first schoolteacher to smokescreen Sophocles's message that the gods might be malicious. Black Slavery. He may have thought he was right to do so. Aristotle's popularity among schoolteachers has helped hide Sophocles's grim idea. Picnic Essay. Even today, students are forced to black slavery, write essays about tragic flaws and purging pity and fear.

Somehow, hybris (ungodly pride, arrogance, and marketing so forth) has come to be identified as the usual tragic fault. I cannot understand why -- the idea does not seem to be Aristotle's. But whenever something bad happens to a basically good person in black, a tragedy, students are invited to see hybris. (Hubris is the did U.S. Propaganda States same word; the Greek letter upsilon looks like our Y and is its origin, but the sound was more like the uhh that I make when I have no idea what to say.) In Antigone , Sophocles has the chorus specifically call Creon on his hybris, i.e., his impious decree intended to promote national security. I have seen this section from Antigone quoted and said to be from slavery in america Oedipus the King, as proof that Oedipus has a tragic flaw of hybris. In Aeschylus's Agamemnon , the murderess gets the victim to do a vainglorious, un-Greek walk down a red carpet in order to gain public support after the mcdonalds customers murder. Other characters (Aeschylus's Prometheus, the victims of Euripides's Dionysus) are punished wrongfully for standing up for what most of us would say is common sense and genuine goodness. It is black in america hard to generalize this. Interestingly, I can't find the idea of hybris in Aristotle's Poetics. During the sixties, we especially resented being told that Antigone's act of civil disobedience / political protest was hybris. You can't defend yourself against an accusation of the necklace hybris.

I am an in america honest physician who engages in public debates. When I catch somebody deliberately deceiving the public, they never defend their cases on the facts, but almost always call me arrogant or elitist. (If you have no case, shout hybris!) Through my Shakespeare site, I often get requests, What is Hamlet's tragic flaw?, etc., etc. I tell people that they're asking the wrong question, and to look instead at the necklace what the slavery author is really saying about did U.S. Propaganda the United States World War Two? life. If Aristotle and his successors had been free to speak the truth clearly, here are some points that would come up in discussion and with which most students (then and now) would probably agree. In our world, very bad things do sometimes happen to very good people. Your chief security comes from black what people know you can do well. Margaret Sanger. This results in turn from your natural abilities, your effort, and your good character. It's safest, and the best strategy, to try to be a good person. It's fun to slavery, be scared at shows, and to cry. Role Did U.S. Propaganda The United States World. But we don't want to be rid of these emotions, but to feel them most intensely. Perhaps we can also bring back, from a good play or movie, something that will help us make sense of ourselves, our neighbors, and our world.

Oedipus seeks the truth about black slavery in america himself despite the warnings that it will not bring him happiness. Address. We cannot blame Aristotle for the centuries of ignorance during which his authority was used to slavery in america, limit free inquiry. But today, most people admire those who bravely seek the truth about nature, and about themselves. It is a modern, rather than an Aristotelian, theme. Greek serious drama (tragedy) reaches an intensity that remains unsurpassed. Serious drama did go on, after the in States Joining World War Two? Greeks, to become richer in many ways, including variety of plot, character, and black slavery in america theme. Much of the power of serious literature (like tragedy, and margaret sanger speech like the black slavery in america comedies of Aristophanes and Shakespeare) comes from the philosophical issues that it raises. We do not have to be frightened when we run into a theme with which we disagree. If history teaches us anything, it is that we need to be more frightened of people who would restrict the free sharing of ideas, or force a stupid right-wing or left-wing ideology on us. Young people naturally discuss whether the stories they hear in church are true, and perhaps even whether the universe itself might be malevolent. (Today's teens enjoy the tongue-in-cheek adventure game, Call of Cthulhu, in which the spiritual powers of the universe are insanely cruel, though less subtle.) Whether or not Sophocles was serious in putting this latter idea forward, simply recognizing that he has done so will not corrupt the environment morals of slavery young people. Every person must find his or her own answer to margaret sanger speech, the mystery of why bad things happen to good people in a universe supposedly under God's control.

Yet even if people reach different conclusions, and express them freely, people can usually still live and work together in peace and good-will. Few thinking people, then or now, will credit the idea that Apollo, or one of his counterparts, deliberately engineers disasters. But Sophocles's theme rings partially true to those of slavery in america us who approach the universe with a sense of picnic essay awe, as a mystery where perhaps there is more than there appears to be. They may not have told you that hamartia is the word used in the original Greek of the in america New Testament for sin. Main Points. The King James Version has 172 instances. Jim Donahoe's essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw is no longer online. In the end however, Oedipus becomes more humble and accepts his fate. He becomes a better person and is better off after his fall.

Dr. Black, from Malaspina College (link now down) wrote that Oedipus's flaw is his special ability to solve riddles, his detective ability, one might say, or his intellect. Yet this is a form of hubris -- the belief that one can understand, read, predict, control the future etc. In America. through one's native wit, and this is what brings him down, despite several warnings to main points of washington's farewell, give up the hunt. Reason = Apollo. Myth Man.

Oedipus. brought about his own downfall because of his excessive obsession to know himself. I'm honored to be the source of his quotation (Thus, some say that the black slavery moral of the story is, Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed.). Link is now down. University of Pennsylvania classics department essay on environment factors, Oedipus's tragic flaw . in this account, his basic flaw is slavery in america his lack of knowledge about his own identity. Margaret Sanger Speech. The writer is fair enough to point out that unlike other tragic heroes, Oedipus bears no responsibility for his flaw. You can decide for yourself whether this fits with Aristotle's use of the term, taken in slavery in america, context.

Ian Johnston -- also offers a free translation (thanks!) Points out themes common to world literature prior to the decline in religious belief. Who does control our lives? What sort of speech relationship do we have to that divine force? Concludes that Oedipus has no moral failures, and that his flaw is black slavery in america his very excellence -- and this also gives him his tragic greatness. Letters on the Classics People always think that because Aristotle said a tragic hero's downfall should be due to a tragic flaw (hamartia) , and irony Aristotle admired King Oedipus above all tragedies, therefore Oedipus must have a flaw. [This is a false premise under Aristotle's very own logic.] And so they have struggled to find one. The whole business of 'tragic flaws' is something that English and in america Drama teachers have got hold of from margaret sanger speech some book they read when they were students.

No one these days who has actually studied Greek tragedy believes there is any such thing. Tragic Flaws . . I realized something quite interesting: just about everything Aristle says about tragic heroes is black wrong. Aristotle had postulated the principle of the tragic flaw in tragedy. A hero, who is marketing environment mostly good, makes some sort of mistake related to black slavery, acharacter flaw, usually hybris or pride. However, from what I read, I realised that tragic heroes are almost never brought down by flaws or by hybris . In fact, in most cases, the protagonist is actually destroyed by his or her virtues. Margaret Sanger. In puzzling over this, I realised that Aristotle is, in fact, not trying to explain exactly what is happening in tragedy but what should be happening. He is slavery answering a very specific challenge to the very existence of tragedy presented by Plato in mcdonalds, the Republic Book III. Plato had argued that tragedy corrupted the audience.

Aristotle's development of the tragic flaw is a response to black slavery, this challenge. The author has a Ph.D. in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy. Link is now down: Cyber Essays to help students. The anonymous author discusses Oedipus the King with reference to Socrates's dictum, The unexamined life is not worth living and (A.A. Winnie the Pooh Milne's dictum) When ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise.

Seeking a tragic flaw for Oedipus, the main points author says that Oedipus would have been better not to have been so curious. What the essay ignores is that Oedipus pursued the truth to save his city, not to amuse himself. Slavery. The author avoids this obvious point in drawing his own non-Sophoclean conclusion. It's better not to know. We used to hear this from anti-science college-campus types on both the far-right and the far-left, who want to the necklace, reshape society down ideological lines. You'll have to decide for yourself about this.

But like it or not, focusing on science over make-believe has a lot to do with why whole cities don't die of the plague any more. Arthur Miller wrote, The flaw, or crack in the character [of Oedipus], is really nothing -- and need be nothing -- but his inherent unwillingness to remain passive in the face of what he conceives to black slavery, be a challenge to his dignity, his image of his rightful status.

Only the passive, only those who accept their lots without active retaliation, are 'flawless.' Most of us are in that category. Miller adds that the factors terror and the fear that is classically associated with tragedy comes from questioning the unquestioned. Maybe this is more about black slavery Miller than about Sophocles -- but it was a good thought for the conformist, self-satisfied Fifties. Oedipus -- heroic-fantasy style painting. If being a contemporary American means being focused on dirty TV sitcoms, greed, casual sex, big-money sports, shout-and-pout grievance-group politics, televangelism, professional wrestling, crybabies, slot machines, postmodernism, political action committees, and war on drugs profiteering. Black In America. then the answer is probably Nothing.

If a contemporary American can still ask, If there is a God, why do horrible things happen to perfectly good people? And how do we explain this to picnic essay, children? -- then the answer is maybe that Sophocles deals with basic human issues. A week after setting up this site, people are already writing me to tell me that I am wrong, but not why. Each of three teachers has told me that The class agreed Oedipus caused his own problem. I use the term immoral for black, the idea that the gods deliberately set up horrible disasters, simply for lack of a better English word. And it seems appropriate to me. (Cliff Notes used the word moral for the idea that the main points address gods are fair and decent.) If you can think of a better one, please let me know. If you are a student writing on Oedipus , perhaps you can find a typically Greek solution. In America. Athenians often constructed sentences in the form of margaret sanger speech One the black slavery one hand ( men ). and on the other hand ( de ). Argue both sides.

It'll be fun and environment prevent trouble. If your instructor is a proponent of one of the three sides of the culture war, you can make him/her happy and still be honest. If your instructor is a conservative religionist (Religious Right, etc., etc.), point out black slavery how Sophocles recognizes the margaret speech falsity of old, heathen mythologies, how their false idols were cruel and amoral, etc., etc. If your instructor is a left-wing social-activist / postmodernist focused on grievance-group politics, point out how Sophocles challenges the traditional belief structures of the oppressive patriarchy, etc., etc. If your instructor is slavery a scientific naturalist, argue that Sophocles actually knew that Greek mythology, and all the talk about gods and so forth, was bunk, and maybe this is what he is really telling us. If you are a teacher taking a traditional classroom approach to Oedipus the King, be ready for these questions from your students. Cliff Notes, which is as usual pretty good, warns that overemphasis on a search for the decisive flaw in main points address, the protagonist as the key factor for slavery, understanding the tragedy can lead to superficial or false interpretations. The author also warns that Aristotle's approach is sometimes too artificial or formula-prone in its conclusions. He goes on to say that some people say Oedipus's tragic flaw is his anger (at Laius, at Tiresias), his trying to escape his destiny, and his pride and determination in trying to get the herdsman to tell the truth. (The author adds that Sophocles believes that the universe is mcdonalds customers fundamentally a profoundly moral place, though I can't tell why.) Why all the different supposed tragic flaws?

If a lone man is hassled and slavery in america then physically attacked by a group of thugs on a deserted stretch of mcdonalds customers highway, especially when the area is black slavery not patrolled by fast police cars, he is much safer if he hits back than if he runs or begs for mercy. This isn't right, but it's a fact of life, and if you didn't know it, you have been protected and are naive. Sophocles presents Oedipus's killing of picnic essay Laius as self-defense. Slavery In America. What kind of mcdonalds sense does this make if Sophocles wants us to think Oedipus caused his own downfall? Today, if a psychic went on the air and accused a decent, respected government official of black slavery murder and marketing factors incest, people would be furious and believe that this is crooked politics. Black Slavery. Oedipus is right to think this and to be very angry, though I think (as the Chorus does) that he goes too far in assuming Creon is behind it. Why would anybody think Oedipus should NOT be suspicious and angry?

If Oedipus had not tried hard to get to the truth, there would have been no play. Oedipus loses his temper with Creon, and the Chorus says he is over-reacting, but not that this causes his disaster. The Chorus sings about the of washington's need to revere the gods, but never that Oedipus has not done do. In fact, the Chorus, representing public opinion, never says Oedipus caused his disaster. This is in spectacular contrast to the ending of Antigone, where the Chorus sings about Creon's hybris (I refuse to allow proper religious burial rites for a man who endangered National Security, this will make him an example and keep our people safe) and slavery how it caused his ruin (Religion and conscience and points farewell address decency and human love take precedence over supposed National Security.)

Does the word hybris even appear in Aristotle's Poetics? The site went up in black in america, 1998, and picnic essay has proved very popular. Most of in america my correspondents express appreciation -- especially fellow-educators. I do get maybe half a dozen abusive e-mails per year specifically about this page, all claiming to come from teachers. (My second such correspondent from 2007 claimed to teach English at a major university, but the department chairman tells me that he knows of no such person.) At least I'm glad people still feel strongly enough about classical literature to send hate mail. However, not one of them (or anyone else) has ever tried to explain why I am wrong -- and that leads me to draw the obvious conclusion. If you have no case, shout hybris . If you are a student who has been punished for using this website, please contact me and customers I'll probably be able to take care of it for you.

Whatever you decide, I hope that everybody enjoys Sophocles's Oedipus the King, and the Greek custom of free intellectual inquiry, as much as I have! Health and friendship! This isn't the first time that everybody's told me that conventional wisdom is right and that I'm wrong, but not why. In the 1970's, I said: Peptic ulcer craters contain spiral bacteria, which are part of the process.

Patients presenting with fibromyalgia symptoms have a real disease. Nitrates do not dilate atherosclerotic coronary arteries. Bismuth has a specific, powerful effect on indigestion apart from black slavery its antacid effect. A large percentage of SIDS deaths are intentional or negligent homicides, and a baby can smother by overling or on environment factors, a mattress or big toy. But except for the last (where people are still telling me I'm wrong, but not why), I've been glad that common sense and a little basic understanding of the world eventually wins out over academic dogma.

Joyce Carol Oates, The Art of slavery, Fiction No. 72. Photograph by margaret, Marion Ettlinger. Joyce Carol Oates is the rarest of slavery, commodities, an author modest about her work, though there is such a quantity of it that she has three publishersone for fiction, one for poetry and a “small press” for margaret more experimental work, limited editions, and books her other publishers simply cannot schedule. And despite the slavery in america, added demands of teaching, she continues to devote much energy to The Ontario Review, a literary quarterly that her husband edits and for which she serves as a contributing editor. Ms. Oates is striking-looking and slender, with dark hair and the necklace, large, inquiring eyes. She is black slavery, highly attractive but not photogenic; no photo has ever done justice to her appearance, which conveys grace and high intelligence. If her manner is main points of washington's address, taken for aloofnessas it sometimes has beenit is, in fact, a shyness that the publication of thirty-three books, the slavery, production of three plays, and the winning of the National Book Award has not displaced.

This interview began at her Windsor home in the summer of 1976 before she and her husband moved to Princeton. When interviewed, her speaking voice was, as always, soft and reflective. One receives the irony, impression that she never speaks in anything but perfectly formed sentences. Black Slavery In America? Ms. Oates answered all questions openly while curled with her Persian cats upon a sofa. (She is a confirmed cat lover and recently took in irony, two more kittens at the Princeton house.) Talk continued during a stroll by the banks of the Detroit River where she confessed to having sat for hours, watching the horizon and the boats, and dreaming her characters into in america existence. She sets these dreams physically onto paper on a writing table in did U.S. Play in Joining World War Two?, her study, which faces the river. Additional questions were asked in in america, New York during the picnic essay, 1976 Christmas season, when Ms. Oates and black slavery in america, her husband attended a seminar on irony her work, which was part of that year's Modern Language Association convention. Many of the questions in this interview were answered via correspondence.

She felt that only by writing out her replies could she say precisely what she wished to, without possibility of misunderstanding or misquotation . We may as well get this one over with first: You're frequently charged with producing too much. JOYCE CAROL OATES. Productivity is a relative matter. And it's really insignificant: What is ultimately important is a writer's strongest books. It may be the case that we all must write many books in order to achieve a few lasting onesjust as a young writer or poet might have to write hundreds of poems before writing his first significant one. Each book as it is written, however, is in america, a completely absorbing experience, and feels always as if it were the irony, work I was born to black in america, write. Afterward, of course, as the years pass, it's possible to become more detached, more critical. I really don't know what to say. I note and picnic essay, can to some extent sympathize with the objurgatory tone of certain critics, who feel that I write too much because, quite wrongly, they believe they ought to have read most of slavery, my books before attempting to picnic essay, criticize a recently published one. (At least I think that's why they react a bit irritably.) Yet each book is black in america, a world unto itself and must stand alone, and it should not matter whether a book is picnic essay, a writer's first, or tenth, or fiftieth. About your criticsdo you read them, usually? Have you ever learned anything from a book review or an black, essay on your work?

Sometimes I read reviews, and without exception I will read critical essays that are sent to me. Sanger Speech? The critical essays are interesting on their own terms. Black? Of course, it's a pleasure simply to points of washington's farewell address, discover that someone has read and black, responded to one's work; being understood, and being praised, is beyond expectation most of the time . . . The average review is margaret sanger speech, a quickly written piece not meant to be definitive. So it would be misguided for a writer to read such reviews attentively. All writers without exception find themselves clapperclawed from time to time; I think the slavery in america, experience (provided one survives it) is wonderfully liberating: After the irony, first death there is no other . . . A writer who has published as many books as I have has developed, of necessity, a hide like a rhino's, while inside there dwells a frail, hopeful butterfly of a spirit. Returning to slavery, the matter of your “productivity”: Have you ever dictated into main points farewell address a machine?

No, oddly enough I've written my last several novels in longhand first. I had an enormous, rather frightening stack of pages and notes for The Assassins, probably eight hundred pagesor was it closer to in america, a thousand? It alarms me to remember. Childwold needed to be written in longhand, of of washington's, course. And now everything finds its initial expression in longhand and the typewriter has become a rather alien thinga thing of formality and slavery in america, impersonality. Mcdonalds? My first novels were all written on slavery a typewriter: first draft straight through, then revisions, then final draft. But I can't do that any longer. The thought of dictating into a machine doesn't appeal to me at the necklace, all. Henry James's later works would have been better had he resisted that curious sort of self-indulgence, dictating to a secretary.

The roaming garrulousness of ordinary speech is usually corrected when it's transcribed into written prose. Do you ever worryconsidering the vast body of your workif you haven't written a particular scene before, or had characters say the slavery, same lines? Evidently, there are writers (John Cheever, Mavis Gallant come immediately to Role did U.S. States War Two?, mind) who never reread their work, and there are others who reread constantly. I suspect I am somewhere in the middle. Slavery? If I thought I had written a scene before, or written the same lines before, I would simply look it up.

What kind of work schedule do you follow? I haven't any formal schedule, but I love to write in environment, the morning, before breakfast. Sometimes the writing goes so smoothly that I don't take a break for slavery in america many hoursand consequently have breakfast at two or three in the afternoon on good days. On school days, days that I teach, I usually write for an hour or forty-five minutes in the morning, before my first class. But I don't have any formal schedule, and at the moment I am feeling rather melancholy, or derailed, or simply lost, because I completed a novel some weeks ago and haven't begun another . . . except in scattered, stray notes. Do you find emotional stability is necessary in order to write? Or can you get to work whatever your state of mind? Is your mood reflected in margaret sanger, what you write? How do you describe that perfect state in black slavery, which you can write from What Role in the United States Joining, early morning into the afternoon? One must be pitiless about this matter of “mood.” In a sense, the writing will create the mood. If art is, as I believe it to be, a genuinely transcendental functiona means by in america, which we rise out of limited, parochial states of mindthen it should not matter very much what states of mind or emotion we are in.

Generally I've found this to be true: I have forced myself to begin writing when I've been utterly exhausted, when I've felt my soul as thin as a playing card, when nothing has seemed worth enduring for another five minutes . Picnic Essay? . . and somehow the black, activity of writing changes everything. Or appears to do so. Joyce said of the underlying structure of factors, Ulysses the Odyssean parallel and parodythat he really didn't care whether it was plausible so long as it served as a bridge to get his “soldiers” across. Once they were across, what does it matter if the bridge collapses? One might say the same thing about the use of in america, one's self as a means for sanger the writing to get written. In America? Once the points farewell address, soldiers are across the stream . . . What does happen when you finish a novel? Is the next project one that has been waiting in line? Or is the choice more spontaneous? When I complete a novel I set it aside, and begin work on short stories, and eventually another long work. In America? When I complete that novel I return to the earlier novel and rewrite much of it.

In the What Role did U.S. Propaganda Play in Joining War Two?, meantime the second novel lies in a desk drawer. Slavery In America? Sometimes I work on two novels simultaneously, though one usually forces the other into Propaganda War Two? the background. The rhythm of writing, revising, writing, revising, et cetera, seems to slavery, suit me. I am inclined to think that as I grow older I will come to be infatuated with the marketing environment factors, art of revision, and there may come a time when I will dread giving up a novel at all. My next novel, Unholy Loves, was written around the time of Childwold, for instance, and revised after the completion of that novel, and again revised this past spring and black slavery in america, summer. My reputation for writing quickly and effortlessly notwithstanding, I am strongly in favor of intelligent, even fastidious revision, which is, or certainly should be, an art in itself. He stood there rocking on his crutch, gazing off at marketing environment, the sky and the fields and the fall trees starting to go the color of sherbet#133; The Pound Poem That Wasn't By Pound. A few weeks ago, I wrote here about a poem I found written on the back of an envelope among Ezra Pounds papers in Italy. It is a small poem and it runs in full: Hast thou 2 loaves of bread Sell one + with the dole Buy straightaway some hyacint Eudora Welty, The Art of Fiction No. 47. I met Eudora Welty in slavery in america, her room at the Algonquin Hotel an hour or so after her train had arrived in Penn Station. She had given me the wrong room number, so I first saw her peering out of her door as the elevator opened. A tall, large-boned, gray-haired woman greeted me apologetically.

She was admittedly nervous about being interviewed, particularly on a tape recorder. After describing her train rideshe won’t flyshe braced herself and asked if I wouldn’t begin the questioning. Once the interview got underway, she grew more at ease. As she herself might say, she was “not unforthcoming.” She speaks deliberately with a deep Southern drawl, measuring her words. She is extremely private and won’t reveal anything personal about herself. You wrote somewhere that we should still tolerate Jane Austen’s kind of did U.S. Propaganda Play in the United Joining World War Two?, family novel. Is Austen a kindred spirit? Tolerate ? I should just think so!

I love and admire all she does, and profoundly, but I don’t read her or anyone else for “kindredness.” The piece you’re referring to was written on black slavery in america assignment for mcdonalds Brief Lives , an in america, anthology Louis Kronenberger was editing. He did offer me either Jane Austen or Chekhov, and Chekhov I do dare to think is irony, more “kindred.” I feel closer to him in spirit, but I couldn’t read Russian, which I felt whoever wrote about black, him should be able to do. Chekhov is one of main points farewell, usso close to today’s world, to my mind, and very close to the Southwhich Stark Young pointed out a long time ago. Why is black, Chekhov close to today’s South? He loved the singularity in people, the individuality. He took for marketing environment factors granted the sense of family. He had the sense of fate overtaking a way of life, and his Russian humor seems to black slavery, me kin to the humor of a Southerner. It’s the picnic essay, kind that lies mostly in character. You know, in Uncle Vanya and The Cherry Orchard , how people are always gathered together and talking and talking, no one’s really listening.

Yet there’s a great love and understanding that prevails through it, and a knowledge and acceptance of each other’s idiosyncrasies, a tolerance of them, and black slavery, also an acute enjoyment of the dramatic. Like in The Three Sisters , when the picnic essay, fire is going on, how they talk right on through their exhaustion, and black slavery in america, Vershinin says, “I feel a strange excitement in the air,” and laughs and speech, sings and talks about the black in america, future. That kind of responsiveness to picnic essay, the world, to black slavery, whatever happens, out of their own deeps of the necklace irony, character seems very southern to me. Anyway, I took a temperamental delight in Chekhov, and gradually the black, connection was borne in upon me. Do you ever return to Virginia Woolf? Yes.

She was the one who opened the door. When I read To the Lighthouse , I felt, Heavens, what is this? I was so excited by the experience I couldn’t sleep or eat. I’ve read it many times since, though more often these days I go back to her diary. Any day you open it to will be tragic, and yet all the marvelous things she says about her work, about working, leave you filled with joy that’s stronger than your misery for her. Remember“I’m not very far along, but I think I have my statues against the necklace the sky”?* Isn’t that beautiful? About your own work, are you surprised that Losing Battles was on the best-seller lista first for you, I believe?

It occurred to me right at slavery, first it must be a flukethat whoever had that place on the best-seller list had just got up and given me his seatlet the lady sit down, she’s tottering. Yet any reception would have surprised meor you could just as well say nothing would have surprised me, because I wasn’t thinking of how it would be received when I wrote it. I thought about the opinion of a handful of marketing factors, friends I would love to have love that book, but not about the public. Do you write for your friends? At the time of writing, I don’t write for my friends or myself, either; I write for it , for the pleasure of slavery in america, it . I believe if I stopped to wonder what So-and-so would think, or what I’d feel like if this were read by a stranger, I would be paralyzed. I care what my friends think, very deeplyand it’s only after they’ve read the finished thing that I really can rest, deep down. But in the writing, I have to just keep going straight through with only the thing in mind and what it dictates. It’s so much an the necklace irony, inward thing that reading the black slavery in america, proofs later can be a real shock. When I received them for main points farewell address my first bookno, I guess it was for Delta Wedding I thought, I didn’t write this. It was a page of dialogueI might as well have never seen it before. Black Slavery? I wrote to my editor, John Woodburn, and told him something had happened to that page in the typesetting.

He was kind, not even surprisedmaybe this happens to all writers. He called me up and read me from the the necklace, manuscriptword for word what the proofs said. Proofs don’t shock me any longer, yet there’s still a strange moment with every book when I move from the position of writer to the position of reader, and slavery, I suddenly see my words with the picnic essay, eyes of the cold public. It gives me a terrible sense of exposure, as if I’d gotten sunburned. Do you make changes in galleys?

I correct or change words, but I can’t rewrite a scene or make a major change because there’s a sense then of someone looking over my shoulder. It’s necessary, anyway, to trust that moment when you were sure at last you had done all you could, done your best for that time. When it’s finally in print, you’re deliveredyou don’t ever have to look at it again. It’s too late to worry about its failings. I’ll have to apply any lessons this book has taught me toward writing the next one. Is Losing Battles a departure from black slavery in america, your previous fiction?

I wanted to see if I could do something that was new for me: translating every thought and feeling into action and speech, speech being another form of actionto bring the customers, whole life of black, it off through the completed gesture, so to speak. I felt that I’d been writing too much by way of description, of introspection on the part of points farewell address, my characters. I tried to see if I could make everything shown, brought forth, without benefit of the author’s telling any more about what was going on inside the in america, characters’ minds and margaret sanger speech, hearts. Slavery? For me, this makes almost certainly for irony comedywhich I love to write best of all. Now I see it might be a transition toward writing a play. Did you know what you were going to write before you put it on paper?

Yes, it was there in my head, but events proliferated as I went along. For instance, I thought all the action in slavery in america, the novel would be contained in picnic essay, one day and night, but a folder started to fill up with things marked “Next A.M.” I didn’t foresee the stories that grew out of the in america, storiesthat was one of the points farewell address, joys of black, working the novel out. I thought the book would be short, and instead it was three or four times longer than my normal work. There’s no way of estimating its original length because I had great chunks of things in paper clips, which weren’t numbered until they went to the printer. And I must have thrown away at marketing, least as much as I kept in the book.

Did you learn anything new about writing dialogue? I believe so. In its beginning, dialogue’s the easiest thing in the world to write when you have a good ear, which I think I have. But as it goes on, it’s the in america, most difficult, because it has so many ways to function. Sometimes I needed to margaret, make a speech do three or four or five things at oncereveal what the character said but also what he thought he said, what he hid, what others were going to think he meant, and what they misunderstood, and so forthall in his single speech. And the speech would have to keep the essence of this one character, his whole particular outlook in concentrated form. Slavery? This isn’t to say I succeeded. But I guess it explains why dialogue gives me my greatest pleasure in writing.

I used to laugh out loud sometimes when I wrote itthe way P. G. Wodehouse is said to do. I’d think of some things my characters would say, and even if I couldn’t use it, I would write the scene out just to customers, let them loose on black slavery somethingmy private show. Despite at picnic essay, least four years of schooling and tens of thousands of black slavery, dollars spent on tuition, its unfortunate that their curriculum doesnt include a resume 101 course or at least require students to attend a seminar on resume writing. Awkwardly crafted and abysmal resumes arent constrained to recent graduates but also reach into margaret sanger the general engineering population. This leaves the perfect opportunity to review some basic tips for handling resumes and establishing an online presence, after all, resumes are no longer limited to simple paper versions. Tip #1 Ignore the one page rule. For some reason, since the black slavery beginning of time there has been this notion that a resume should only be one page.

It should be short and simple and provide very basic information. Picnic Essay? This is great if the black slavery plan is to be a professional job seeker. A single page, in a readable font, provides enough space to put a name, a few companies and education before there is no more room left on the page. It doesnt provide enough space to margaret sanger, really sell or distinguish the in america applicant from customers anyone else. Single page resumes are often looked at and quickly discarded because there is slavery in america nothing on them that really catches attention. Dont allow this outdated rule to dictate the length of a resume. Tip #2 Explicitly show experience. A potential employer is not going to environment factors, take the time to read between the lines as to whether an individual has a certain type of experience or skill. Experience needs to be explicitly declared and not implied. This can be done by listing each project that was performed at a company and then providing details as to what was involved.

Bullet points are a quick way to break down skills and efforts that were put into a project. They allow the potential employer to black, quickly skim through and catch the highlights or experience.

Figure 1 shows an example of how sentence structure can be combined with bullet points to effectively get the point across. This is something that someone adhering to the one page rule would never be able to do. Tip #4 List professional experience first. College degrees always hold a special place in everyones heart especially after paying the enormous tuition rates that have become known to students in modern times. Unfortunately, on a resume they hold less weight than professional experience. This means that while having a degree may be necessary, they should be listed after professional experience. It seems unfair but the picnic essay fact of the matter is slavery in america that the first few years of ones career are spent learning what should have been taught in higher educational institutions. Please note that professional experience was noted earlier in What Role in the United Joining World War Two?, the paragraph. This means that coffee shops and a stint at McDonalds are not going to be of interest to your next engineering employer, so it can be removed from the experience list.

Tip #5 If project experience is lacking, use a DIY project. Sometimes inexplicable things happen and a college student never has an internship, or an in america, experienced engineer finds themselves on the unemployment list for a while. This can result in margaret speech, an employer having a hard time justifying even taking the time to talk with the candidate. This is why these gaps should be filled with learning experiences from slavery do-it-yourself (DIY) projects. Of Washington's Farewell? Create something and go through the in america design process of gathering requirements, block diagramming and prototyping and put that experience and maybe even some lessons learned on the resume! This will show the prospective employer that the individual is self-motivated, passionate and a number of other things. The best part is that when they call for an interview, the picnic essay candidate can bring what was designed and talk about the process, the hardware design, the software etc. It might just give that edge needed to even beat out the competition. Forcing an in america, employer to read between the the necklace lines is a dangerous game. In America? Listing project details is customers one thing but an employer also wants to know in general the types of skills the candidate has. Slavery In America? Having a technical expertise section that lists various items such as hardware, software and programming language and provide a quick overview summary of mcdonalds, what an individual brings to black in america, the table can be very beneficial.

Figure 2 shows such as an example. Tip #7 Identify industry buzz words and use a few. At different times there are certain buzz words that take an industry by storm. They may indicate a certain type of design paradigm such as model driven design or event driven design or perhaps a new field of device such as internet-of-things or machine-to-machine. The whole point is that while the resume is being dusted off and updated, spending a little bit of speech, time learning the current buzz words can do a lot to increase the likely hood of the resume being discovered. Of course if the buzz word doesnt apply it should be over-looked but there will most likely be buzz words that do apply and that greatly raise the resumes visibility. Companies like to have leaders on their teams or up and coming leaders. Leaders are action driven and employers like to look for candidates that take initiative and are on their way to in america, becoming leaders. For this reason it is always nice to include action words that grab extra attention. Mention leading the team or managed the team or were conducting investigations to factors, list a few. Slavery? While investigating resume action words, a website with 100 Great Resume Words popped up and after a quick review there was little argument about it.

The website is linked here and it is highly recommended that they be perused by the reader the picnic essay next time resume updating occurs. Black? Tip #9 Use social media to enhance your resume. Paper is out, electronic is in. The resume in general hasnt changed a whole lot but with social media outlets such as Linkedin and Twitter, the opportunity to enhance a resume is astounding. Linkedin can be used as an enhanced resume by duplicating the information on a resume and then filling in the extras that Linkedin allows. In todays society there seems to be more chance of being found on a social media website first and then only after connecting with someone does a request for a resume occur. This means that social media profiles need to be just as good at attracting attention as a resume but that is an the necklace irony, entirely different article for another day.

A few examples of slavery in america, some enhancements that can be made through social media are getting colleagues to verify your skills, getting recommendations and then also cross linking colleagues on mcdonalds, projects. This provides employers with the ability to cross reference what they are being told and verify that the material is in fact real. There has been some buzz about something called Klout that is supposed to analyze social media interactions and then rank a user based on black, those interactions. A value of 1 to 99 is then assigned to them. Despite all the authors interactions on social media sites, posting baby pictures on Facebook seems to raise the score the most. Mcdonalds? This leads the author to believe that Klout is an interesting sidebar that will most likely not be taken seriously by employers in the near future. Tip #10 Review and update quarterly. The worst time to update a resume is when an individual is looking for a job. Going for black slavery in america, long periods of marketing environment factors, time without updates usually results in gaps of information or misrepresentation from just forgetting what was done. Slavery? That is why it is useful to set a periodic time, whether it is every quarter or twice a year to sit down and factors, update the resume with new projects, skills, etc.

Sometimes employers will include employee resumes in proposals in order to show a potential client that their team has the skills necessary to slavery in america, get the job done. If a resume isnt kept up to date then the team could quickly look like they are not up-to-date with the latest and greatest techniques and cause the employer to lose business.
