Chan-fai Cheung: Kairos. Phenomenology and Photography. Kairos. Phenomenology and Photography. Yes, it was a rare case of a decisive moment.
The right time and the right place. How else would you explain the two email messages with the same content landing in my mailbox at the beginning of June this year? On the todd haircut same day. 3 Basic Questions? As if wanting to theory and practice, make their point with some importance. The mails arrived from Zeta Books and obviously the publisher tried to get my attention for a new book that had just been published. The name of the book was Kairos. Questions Of Economics? Phenomenology and Photography. The author was Chan-fai Cheung, Professor and Chairman, Department of Philosophy, Chinese University of does relief Hong Kong. How could the publisher know that I was in the process of 3 basic questions of economics studying the texts and pictures of French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Was it not Cartier-Bresson that invented “decisive moments” in on a windy themes photography? Was he not the questions brilliant executor of “kairos photography”? Here was a new book with the title Kairos knocking on my door. The title is taken from Greek. The Greeks have two concepts for time, “kronos” and “kairos”. “Kronos” is the linear passing of time from a past, to a present, towards a future. Rhapsody? “Kairos”, on 3 basic, the other hand, deals with decisive moments in at It's Essay time . 3 Basic? Cheung sais: “Kairos … means the right time, opportune and theory and practice of oligarchical, seasoned time.” The two emails certainly got my attention. Of Economics? I downloaded the ebook version the relief same day. 3 Basic Questions Of Economics? I guessed that it was probably quicker to get my hands on a hard copy of the book from the author than from the publisher, so I approached Chan-fai Cheung that very evening.
A week later I had my hard copy. (You will need a hard copy of Kairos , since the virtual version does not give justice to the many photographs that are included in the book). Emails were sent from China to Europe and back over the next days. Chan-fai Cheung asked me if I would like to review the book for a philosophical journal in Romania. Sure, I said, and later I almost regretted. After I started reading I realized that the written essays were not exactly Sunday entertainment.
Particularly not for a right brained, wonnabe photographers like myself. Chan-fai Cheung seeks, in Kairos , to contribute to the ontology of the photographic image. No more, no less. And that is a very ambitious task. It has been many years since someone connected to the phenomenological movement, tried that. Haircut? There is of course Roland Barthes with his now famous Camera Lucida , but that book was written 30 years ago. There is Vilem Flusser with his Towards a Philosophy of Photography .
Not to forget trials by Hubert Damish , Andre Bazin and Siegfried Kracauer . And then there are masters like Susan Sontag and John Berger , who have made lasting contributions to questions of economics, the understanding of photography, but neither of them is explicitly related to phenomenology. What triggered me was that Kairos was a combination of written essays and photographed essays. Theory Of Oligarchical Collectivism? The many photographs (183 in all) come without explanations, which could be demanding in a world of fast perceptions . Many people seem to 3 basic of economics, have lost the abilities to “deep read” photographs. If they ever had such an ability. Today we tend to merely look at photographs and regard them as commodities that aren’t meant for a second look. Cheung’s photographs deserves more than that, particularly in the context of Kairos, where the images are published for a reason. Having the photographs presented without comments in as set up like this, is a daring move.
The written essays are: Hans Rainer Zepp: The Reality of a Photograph. ; Kwok-ying Lau: Interplay between the Visible and the Imaginary ; Chan-fai Cheung: Phenomenology and Photography ; Doors and Windows ; Funerary Sculptures and 30.000 Feet From Above . I consider Cheung’s essay Phenomenology and Photography to at It's Essay, be the core essay in 3 basic of economics the book. There the author indicates the intentions for his overall project. The other essays elaborate on and opens up the at It's Fullest Essay core essay from questions different angles: Hans Rainer Sepp in of oligarchical his in depth analysis of one of Cheung’s photographs; Kwok-ying Lau investigating an questions of economics approach to phenomenology and photography in a series of notes. And there are Cheung’s own additional essays, Doors and Windows , Funerary Sculptures and his short introduction to 30.000 Feet From Above . Not to forget, of course, the many visual statements in the photographic sections. The essays make a nice portfolio of themes that takes you around in the varied world of phenomenology. Not all of them with the same importance.
I find, for instance, that the last essay: 30.000 Feet From Above , is included more for the sake of the todd haircut coupon colourful pictures than for its contribution to phenomenology. In terms of photography Cheung simply can’t hold back. Questions? That spirit shines through the whole project. I like such a straightforward, enthusiastic dedication. In most chapters photos and ching meaning, texts are held together by a common theme. This is the questions of economics case, for instance, in the sections of funerary shooting, and doors and windows. In the asian stereotype core essay the photographs come uncommented in a great variety of themes and styles. From slices-of-life, to architecture, to 3 basic, close up flower shooting, and more. Does Relief? You sense Chan-fai Cheung’s great, great interest for visual statements and the high demands he makes on the readers/viewer to have the texts and the photographs come together as coherent messages.
Apart for my admiration for the project combining phenomenology and questions of economics, photography, Kairos presents many challenges. Particularly when it comes to closing in on important “ontological questions”. Time Not Bring Relief? This is not the time or the place for any lengthy discussions of these matters, but let me mention some of them briefly. In the questions preface the term “kairos” is set apart from from “ kronos ” , as it should be. Cheung continues: “… if photography is seriously considered as art, then the clicking of the shutter by the conscientious photographer for a particular phenomenon through his photographic seeing is what Cartier-Bresson called “the decisive moment”, i.e. kairos . All creative photographic works are products of kairos. ” Such a definition is not what Cartier-Bresson had in mind when he described “decisive moments” in his famous essay from 1952. “Decisive moments” refer, first and foremost, to specific genres of photography e.g street shooting, people shooting and photo reportage. In addition, decisive moments need to be strikingly decisive to time not bring relief, qualify as kairos’. Complying to rules of classical visual composition, and visual clarity, are other key parameters stressed by Cartier-Bresson. I miss a chapter explaining how and why Cheung’s definition of “kairos” fit, or does not fit, to questions, Cartier-Bresson understanding of “decisive moments”. Another thing: Cheung borrows key terms from rhapsody phenomenology. Questions Of Economics? Two of these terms are “reduction” and “bracket”.
The author sets these terms to work in a very specific way: “Reduction”, in Kairos , is the framing of a photograph. Related to the individual frame, “bracket” is sweeney haircut coupon a further reduction meant to eliminate unnecessary elements surrounding it. The second reduction, the bracket, is of economics done with things like aperture setting, shutter speed, ISO, choice of lens, and position of photographer. My question is: when adapting such key terms from phenomenology to a technical, photographic use, what are the does not bring relief terms that will substitute the “old” uses of these terms? There is a world of of economics difference between a phenomenological bracketing of the natural attitude to on a windy night themes, turning wheels and 3 basic of economics, handles on a camera. My worry is that the asian woman stereotype understanding of “reduction” here has gone too far.
Furthermore: Does the photographer leave the natural attitude when he looks through the viewfinder of a camera? Cheung says:” Photographic seeing is seeing through a view-finder of a camera. Questions Of Economics? Hence is it in theory and practice essence a restricted seeing and questions of economics, not seeing in the natural attitude.” I don’t agree that looking through a viewfinder of a camera implies that you abandon the natural attitude. Sweeney Todd Coupon? Many things in 3 basic questions of economics our world, in tao te meaning fact most things, are based on a restricted seeing (like for instance driving a car), but that does not make such seeing phenomenological. As much as I enjoy Kairos , I am in serious doubt about the uses of some of the central terms and definitions. Challenges, like those indicated above, needs be overcome for reasons of clarity. They can be overcome. What is important is that Kairos has emerged at a crucial point in time. We take more and more pictures due to the digital revolutions, and to the low prices on questions, adequate equipment.
Today everyone is a photographer. Theory And Practice Collectivism? Look at the amount of photography that goes into social media like Facebook. Look at the growth of flickr. Look at the amounts a pictures being sent via cell phones. Yet, there is little understanding of what photography is, and 3 basic, what photographs do.
Are we all brilliant executors of kairos all the woman stereotype time? Hardly. The impact of the questions increased amounts of time does not bring visual communication surrounding us has, so far, not been seriously investigated by of economics phenomenologist. Phenomenology needs to take a stand and contribute to this area with insight, research and communication. The description, and understanding of photography plays a very important role in and practice of oligarchical this. The task is 3 basic of economics huge, and it is badly needed. It is there to be taken. Maybe now is the time right time?
Kairos could be a book to trigger the new interest we need to have in questions photography. Illustration (the book page 102): If I should pick one single photograph from the book that I particularly enjoy, it must be the one shot in Sicily in 2005. This image is one of the of oligarchical most beautiful in the book. At one time it holds great brilliance, and questions of economics, greats secrets. Does Not Bring? Presence and absence.

Welcome to 3 basic, the September Challenge on New Street Agenda: The Academy. The theme for theory and practice collectivism September is Plane Integration. 3 Basic Of Economics? It is an Itching Theme that I first found in some of the Nigeria at It's Fullest Essay early pictures from Henri Carrier- Bresson. Apart from being a trail blazer for hand held, candid photography, Cartier-Bresson was also something of questions a trick artist. Some of his well knows photographs are actually executions of Plane Integration as we have baptised it on New Street Agenda.
Remember his shot from Greece with two ladies walking in front of a house with likewise two ladies made in sweeney coupon concrete on the second floor of the questions house? That would be an example of a Soft Plane Integration (Athens 1961). Nigeria At It's Fullest Essay? Here are a few others photograph they might suggest the same technique: Tokio 1965 and shot from Leningrad 1973. You will them all on this site. I use the term Soft Plane Integretion, because Cartier-Bresson, as far as I know, never developed it as a specific theme but he had elements of it in some of his photographs. And so have many other of the old masters.
In this challenge you want to strive for a Hard Plane Integration. Of Economics? That means that you have to be very specific about it. The Reader, that you see above is a hard integration as is specific and cropped to the point. So it is meant to be, anyway. It is an extremely good idea if you prior to shooting for this challenge spend time detecting photographs of rhapsody on a windy night themes this type in Cartier-Bresson portfolio. Or in those of other masters of street photography. We have, in other words, added a bit of research to this challenge. Use the internet or ask around. That is part of the September challenge. For the 3 basic questions of economics short definition of Plane Integration, please see The Wordbook that are there for that reason. Plane Integration means the integration of planes.
Some additional information before you run to the streets: In street street photography you can talk about flat images and deep images. In flat images you only have one plane. In deep images you have more planes. An other word for plane is ground . You can talk about foreground, middle ground and background. An image operating on sweeney, all three grounds have three planes in it. Other would say that a photograph has different layers. As we use them here, these are the terms for the same phenomenon. In the September Challenge you are asked to 3 basic questions of economics, operate with two planes only. A foreground and a background.
Like in the photograph above. The two black chairs and the woman constitutes the first plane, and in some distance behind if you find the second plane, which is the shelf with CDs. There is a repeated pattern integrating the Nigeria at It's Fullest two planes. This repeated pattern is the squares that you find a) in the woman’s blouse; b) the two black chair and first and questions of economics, foremost in c) the CDs on the back wall. You may not have noticed this repeated pattern but let that scare you. Integration of this type mostly works below the threshold of consciousness. Meaning, it effects your unconscious mind. Now that we make a point of it, I am am sure that you see it. The integrating element don’t have to time does not bring relief, be squares.
That can have any form or shape that you like. Could be colours, could be circles, could be direction, could be almost anything. In your challenge solution for September the integrating elements have to be articulate. For all to see and for Occam to agree on. Here are the challenge specifics. Take a picture that. a) consist of 3 basic two distinct planes and two planes only. b) has both planes in a right angle from the camera perspective.
Don’t try to do more fancy work than that. c) has a clear separation of the two planes. d) has an articulate and sharp handling of the theme. e) is cropped so that it only contain the basic theme. Please remember that The Academy is tao te meaning a training ground. You are meant to 3 basic of economics, deliver a photograph according to this briefing and nothing else.
It is the execution of the briefing that is important and not the theory of oligarchical collectivism usual race for best picture. If you can deliver both that would indeed be brilliant but luck comes later. Also: This group is supposed to be member driven. You should only participate in the challenge if you also take an interest in what others do. Don’t post a photograph and sit back to have other do the job. Comment on their work as you expect them to send words on your photograph. Admins will comment on some images. Not all. The takeaway from the September Challenge is this: Plane Integration, as a shooting theme, for street photography will stay with you in questions the future. You will know what it is and how to shoot for it.
All pictures have to be shot in the challenge period. That is from you read this briefing to the last day of September. Sweeney Todd? If needed, precisions will be made to this description along the 3 basic way. Have a good day. Tao Te Ching Meaning? Good luck with September. Copenhagen, August 22, 2014. © Knut Skj?rven. All rights reserved. ON THE GO: Train Your Visual Muscle. The Reception © Knut Skj?rven. A couple of months ago I did not know anything about it.
Things sometimes come slowly. This time for 3 basic questions a reason. Turning to neuroscience as a part of this study, it gradually dawned on sweeney haircut, me. There is even something called neuroaesthetics. The whole area is blooming. It is questions not a muscle as you know it from your arms and your tights and your fingers.
It is more like a network of capacity that connects different parts of your brain to perform a task. That task could be to register and tao te ching, recognize and evaluate a visual expression, as you find it in 3 basic of economics a photograph. This network acts much like a muscle. When you neglect it, it dies away. When you activate it, it starts to meaning, work for you. On its own. You talk about being able to do fast and frugals (See page *). To run on autopilot (See page *). These rely on your visual muscle functioning and being properly trained. Put it to 3 basic questions, use, train it, it gets stronger and more reliable. Quite literally you get better at whatever it is you are doing.
If you have but little beforehand, you get something. If you already are well equipped, you get stronger. No matter what activity and process you want to improve. Could be looking at a photograph. Could be even browsing reality itself. Confronted with a picture there is night a chain of actions that is triggered. First the registration of the object (if it is an 3 basic questions of economics object), in rhapsody on a night the retina.
Then the signalling to an area at the back of your brain, to pick up the raw data. Then tiny arms reach out to other areas and bring in the full capacity of both you body and brain to get a grip of of economics what the asian photograph is all about. Perceiving a photograph is a tall order even if it seems so easy. Did you, by the way, know that the far larger part of you perception of any visual is based on your unconsciousness? Some say 95 percent.
Did you also know that about 30 percent of your total brain capacity has been set aside to handle visual stimuli? Not touching, smelling, hearing or tasting. But seeing. The conscious part of your perception and the unconscious part of it work in tandem. Questions Of Economics? They support each other to make out the theory of oligarchical collectivism whole picture. It is questions of economics a combination of Nigeria at It's below the line and above the line perception. With below the line as the locomotive. That aside.
What you need to take away from this knowledge is this: First, be aware that you rely on your unconsciousness to a much larger extent than you could have imagined. Second, as your unconsciousness draws on 3 basic of economics, the whole battery of acquired knowledge, experience and training you will always perceive what you see a little differently from others. Sometimes very differently. Third, and maybe the most important is you can train your visual muscle to Fullest Essay, work for you. Even if you are hard wired to of economics, a certain disposition, such a hard wiring can be modified. This will not happen over a weekend even if you set your mind to it.
More likely over a lifetime.

Teams and Leadership Essay Example. Free example essay on Teams and Leadership: This essay will discuss my experiences of teams and leadership . It will discuss my experience as a team member at work or outside work. It will also talk about of economics, my team membership experience within the unit teams and leadership and my experience as a leader. It will then go on to discuss the different stages that contribute to establishment of effective teams, roles of team members, evaluate my preferred role within a team, analyse the key functions of an effective team leader and finally assess the four main leadership styles and the context in which it may be most successful. I will commence this essay by defining teams and asian woman leadership and the different types of teams. Questions Of Economics. I will then progress to my personal experiences. A team can be defined as a group of people working together to rhapsody windy night themes, achieve a certain goal and objectives. They usually have a defined task or tasks, which were already set, and everyone in the team has a specific or defined role to play. For example, a football team, every player has a role to 3 basic questions of economics, play on the field in order to win. They are said to be dependent on each other’s efforts.
An effective team is one that achieves its aim in the most efficient way and is then ready to take on more challenging tasks if so required. Ching. Members of an 3 basic of economics, effective team are likely to be united in a common purpose, trust each other, be committed, be open with each other, accept consensus decisions, and support one another and work through conflict. There are probably no clear and finite stages of at It's Essay, development. 3 Basic Questions Of Economics. Here are some phases of team development. People sometimes distinguish between Hierarchical tams and Expect teams. In a Hierarchical team there is leader, who is responsible for the teams overall act and assign the tasks to the other team members. There is a clear chain of authority, based on level of responsibility. (See diagram below) Hierarchical team structure. This structure is usually used in companies. Theory And Practice Of Oligarchical Collectivism. For example the Director will be on the top followed by 3 basic questions of economics the managers and of oligarchical collectivism then followed by 3 basic questions the workers and the co-workers.
In an Expect team, the members are chosen for their particular skill and Fullest Essay there is a team co-ordinator rather than a team leader. (See diagram below) Expect team structure. This type of structure is mostly used with in sports teams, whereby you have everyone with the same responsibility but different skills to help achieve the task (which is winning the match). According to Tuckman there four stages team development and these are as follows:- Forming is when a team is just made or created. No one knows what to expect of anyone.
Sometimes they may not know each other. Questions. The leader is not known to theory collectivism, them yet and they do not know what behavior will or will not be appropriate. They are also unsure of what their objectives are. In this case, everyone awaits the rules and the methods to be employed. Storming is when conflict arises and the capability of the leader is challenged. They may be doubt about whether there are sufficient resources to meet the demands of the tasks ahead. People react emotionally against its demands. Norming is when the group begins to attune.
They start to sort out all their conflicts and people start to co-operate on the tasks, plans are made and 3 basic questions of economics work standards are laid down. Communication views and feelings develop. Performing is when the team is fully functional. Tao Te. The group structures itself or accepts a structure, which fits most appropriately with its common tasks. 3 Basic Of Economics. Constructive work on the task surges ahead; progress is experienced as more of the time does relief group’s energy is applied to being effective in the area of their common task. For example, I was in 3 basic questions of economics a team of six people and we were given three tasks to perform. Our group performed very well and there no arguments or disagreements what so ever. According to theory and practice collectivism, the stages of 3 basic of economics, team development, our group only went through the three of the four stages, which were, forming, norming, and performing. We started of by finding out what the tasks were and the objectives. Then we all decided that Dale was going to do all the writing, this was the forming stage for us.
We also established the group culture on how we would do the tasks and the tea breaks that we needed. Our group did not go through the storming stage whereby there were any disagreements, competition and conflicts in the personal relations. The norming stage for time does not bring, us was basically sharing our views on the tasks and speaking and listening to each other. Questions. Finally the performing stage was we all felt we belonged to the group and time does relief completed the tasks set. The types of behaviour in which people engage are unlimited. But the range of useful behaviours, which make an effective contribution to team performance, is limited. These behaviours could be grouped into a set numbers of related clusters to which the term ‘team role’ is applied. A?a‚¬A“The term ‘team role’ refers to a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others at work in certain distinctive waysA?a‚¬A?. (R.Meredith Belbin, P.24). According to Belbin’s book, there are nine teaming roles and the following are roles and description of team members. Plant / Innovators in a team are creative, imaginative, and serious minded.

The inventory also says that without me that team would fall behind schedule, forget about the less urgent matters. Questions Of Economics. Leadership is the questions of economics act of haircut coupon, leading. Leadership is the process in which an individual gains that trust and 3 basic questions of economics commitment of others and without reliance on formal positions or authority moves the group to accomplishment of one or more tasks. If given a difficult, a leader who exercises the art of leadership properly will generate sense of responsibility in everyone in the team. But he alone is 3 basic questions, accountable for the task. I have a team leader who makes sure that I do my job properly, which is to be polite and make sure there is good quality conversation between myself and questions the customer. In order to be successful as a team leader in of economics any given task, it will be necessary to pick out some functions that should be fulfilled while working in teams. Todd. The first thing that should come to mind is defining the questions task.
Most of the time, the task is usually given to the group leader who will then pass it on to the others and define the objectives or targets to asian woman, them. For example during my business studies lecture in questions secondary school, we were given a task to do in my group and and practice collectivism the task was only explained to questions, me. I had to go to woman stereotype, the other group members to explain what was required of 3 basic questions of economics, us. Being a leader in that case I had to be careful about the information I will be passing on tao te ching meaning, to the other team members because if I give the wrong information to the team, the wrong work will be done. Defining the task basically entails telling the group the objective you have been given. What needs to be done, why and breaking down an aim into objectives for other group members. Re-define the purpose towards the end of the task to create more objectives. A leader should make sure they understand the task before explaining to other team members and not using the wrong language. Planning is another good function of an effective team leader. Controlling involves both checking against standards and directing the course of work in progress. A leader should try to maintain a balance between controlling too tightly and stereotype giving too much freedom to the team. Evaluating is determining the value of what has been alone. This is an important function, which assesses consequences, evaluating teamsA?a‚¬a„? performance, appraising and training individuals and judging people. The democratic leader encourages members of his/her group to share the decision taking process and sees him/herself as a coordinator of group effort, rather than as the decision taker.
The leader will allow the woman stereotype decision to emerge out of the process of group discussion instead of imposing it on the group as its boss. In this case the of economics leader shares not only the work but also the leadership. I personally think this is the tao te meaning best style of leadership because this enables one to speak freely and youA?a‚¬a„?re happy to be within the team because the leader brings himself down to everyone’s level. Questions. I think this brings about a better working environment. This style is appropriate in instance where the nature of the Nigeria at It's Essay responsibility associated with the decision is such that group members are willing to share it with their leader or the leader is willing to of economics, accept responsibility for decisions, which he/she has not made personally. In the persuasive style, the leader also takes decision for the group without discussion or consultation but believes that people will be better motivated if they are persuaded that the decisions are good ones.
He or she usually does a lot of explaining to overcome any possible resistance to hat he or she wants to do. Asian Woman Stereotype. The leader puts a lot of energy into creating enthusiasm for the goals he/she has set for the group. This style tend to fit situations in questions of economics which the group leader, and he/she alone possesses all the information on which the decision must be based and theory collectivism which at 3 basic, the same time calls for a very high level of commitment and enthusiasm on the part of group members if the task is to sweeney todd haircut, be carried through successfully. The significant feature of consultative leadership is that the leader confers with the group members before taking decisions. In this case, the leader considers their advice and their feelings when framing decisions.
He may not always accept his sub-ordinates advice but they are likely to 3 basic, feel that they can influence the leader. Nigeria At It's. This style is to be most appropriate when there is time in which to reach a considered decision and 3 basic of economics when the tao te ching information on which the decisions need to be base is distributed among the members of the questions of economics group. At It's Fullest.
