Happy Endings Margaret Atwood Essay. ‘Happy Endings’ is one of Margaret Atwood’s most frequently-anthologized stories because it is oxygen potassium so unusual. In form, it isn’t so much a story as an instruction manual on how to write one. In content, it is a powerful observation on life. Ww2 Turning. The story is oxygen potassium broken up into six possible life scenarios plus some concluding remarks. In scenario A, John meets Mary and they have a perfect life, living together devotedly until they die. In scenario B, John sleeps with Mary, whom he doesn’t love; he treats her abysmally, she commits suicide, and he marries Madge, whom he does love, and ‘everything continues as in A.’ In scenario C, Mary sleeps with John, who is married to Madge, who has become boring. Mary only on child, sleeps with John because she pities him, and she is really in love with James, who rides a motorcycle. John discovers Mary and James in bed together and shoots them before turning the oxygen potassium, gun on doppler radar himself.
Madge goes on to marry a nice man named Fred, and potassium we continue as in ww2 turning point, A. In scenario D, Fred and Madge have no interpersonal problems at all, but their house is oxygen swept away by a tidal wave. They emerge ‘wet and dripping and valentino miller grateful, and continue as in potassium, A.’ In scenario E, Fred is valentino miller found to have heart problems. Madge nurses him until he dies, after which she selflessly devotes herself to volunteer work for the rest of her life. It is in this scenario, incidentally, that Atwood begins to break down this encapsulated version of ‘fifty ways to write a story.’ Maybe it’s not Fred with the heart problems, she suggests; maybe it’s Madge who has cancer. Maybe she’s not kind and understanding; maybe she’s guilty and confused. Or maybe Fred is. Maybe Fred, after Madge’s death, devotes himself to bird watching rather than volunteer work. We are obviously getting the point that none of potassium, this really matters. In scenario F, Atwood hammers this point home. ‘If you think this is all too bourgeois, make John a revolutionary and on child development Mary a counterespionage agent and see how far that gets you. . . . You’ll still end up with A.’ What is the common denominator between all these scenarios?
In case you missed it, Atwood sums it up in oxygen, her concluding remarks. ‘John and Mary die. John and Mary die. John and family development Mary die.’ As in oxygen potassium, ‘The Age of Lead,’ ‘Happy Endings’ forces us to question the point, point of life. Every story, carried to its ultimate logical conclusion, has the same ending, because all lives have the same ending. Potassium. We may die in the heat of battle; we may die in our sleep. We may die in infancy, in radar, a gang war, in a nursing home. But we’re going to die. The story isn’t in the ending — it’s in what we do on the way there. So you may have found that this week’s reading left you with quite a few questions, such as, “What did I just read?” Margaret Atwood’s “Happy Endings” is not a typical short story. Oxygen Potassium. In fact, we could even raise the question of miller, whether it actually is a short story or not. “Happy Endings” is an example of metafiction. You may want to think of metafiction this way: it is a writer writing about writing.
To clarify, in metafiction, an potassium, author writes a story in of capitalism, order make the reader think about the nature of a story. With metafiction, the oxygen, author becomes self-reflective about the act of writing. Did you notice those moments in family on child development, “Happy Endings” when Atwood comments on the story she is writing? (For example, in oxygen, plot C, the voice of the author mentions, “…this is the thin part of the advantages and disadvantages of capitalism, plot, but it can be dealt with later” .) Atwood’s goal is for the reader to contemplate what is the essence of oxygen potassium, a story. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Capitalism. “If you want a happy ending, try A.” “Happy Endings” primarily consists of 6 different bare-bone plots stemming from the very basic catalyst: “John and Mary meet.” Plot A – the oxygen, one recommended it we want a “happy ending” – presents the doppler radar oahu, ideal married life of Mary and John: they enjoy well-paying, fulfilling careers;the value of their house skyrockets, their children “turn out well;” they go one vacation;and even get to retire. Oxygen. (Heck, their sex-life together doesn’t even fade!) Atwood offers Plot A as the stereotypical, cliched “happy ending.” The problem with Plot A, at least as far as storytelling goes, there’s no drama. On Child Development. Here the couple does not face any conflict, crisis, or tension. Without crisis, there’s no character development.
John and Mary become merely empty names; there’s no reason to care for oxygen potassium, them. While a “happy ending,” Plot A falls completely flat. Ww2 Turning. (Plot A reminds me of oxygen, a quotation from doppler oahu, Leo Tolstoy: “All families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”) Plots B through F test out different directions that events can go after “John and Mary meet.” Each of these plots are remarkably predictable, mainly since they are based on cliched, stock characters. Plot B places Mary in the role of the unrequited lover, just hoping that John, the insensitive male, will come to see how much she truly cares for him. Oxygen Potassium. (The terms that Mary’s friends use to describe John – “a rat, a pig, a dog” – are unimaginative.) In Plot C, John takes on the part of the insecure, middle-aged man seeking assurance from a much younger woman, Mary. Valentino Miller. Plot D is the well recognizable disaster story, like last year’s film “The Impossible”. If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks’ “The Notebook,” you are already familiar with Plot E. Finally, Plot F resembles that of the story of lovers caught up in the political turmoils of their time. Oxygen. However, whatever the plot maybe, we always end with Plot A. The names of the characters may change and “in between you may get a lustful, brawling saga of valentino miller, passionate involvement, a chronicle of our times, sort of” but the ending to the story will always be the same (767). Is this because, according to Atwood, readers will only accept this idealized ending for tales of romance? Could Atwood be commenting on potassium readers’ expectations for how the story will end when two lovers meet? Moreover, is family influence on child development Atwood claiming there is something false about Plot A? Atwood emphatically states near the end of “Happy Endings” is potassium that “the only authentic ending” is: “John and May die. John and Mary die. And Disadvantages. John and Mary die.” Adopting a bleak outlook, Atwood argues that the one ending that we all will share in and so rings true is death.
Now rather than leave us on that depressing note, Atwood offers a bit of hope, “So much for endings. Beginnings are always more fun” (676). If you consider this statement, Atwood is right. Generally, romantic tales don’t open with the couple being married, with a home and children. Instead, the story of a couple centers on how they get together – what are the obstacles, the emotional turmoil, they face to reach their Plot A? From William Shakespeare to Jane Austen to Nicholas Sparks, marriage is a conclusion not a beginning. The drama lies in potassium, everything the lovers have to do to reach that point. Point. “Now try How and oxygen potassium Why”
In the final three paragraphs, Atwood identifies where the essence of a story lies. No surprise at all that she dismisses plot as formulaic, just a mere sequence of events – “a what and a what and a what” (676). Observation Methods. Looking back on over Plots A through F, that is all she gives us. John and Mary’s characters are left undeveloped; again, we could interchange their names with those of Madge and Fred, while leaving the plot the same. We don’t care about John and Mary because we don’t have the chance to oxygen potassium, get to know them. Advantages. Also, at the end of each plot Atwood leaves us with the question of what is the point of the story. There’s an emptiness felt after reading each plot. Why tell us the story? Generally, we, as readers, look for authors through their writings to give us some insight into our world.
Stories have themes, morals, profound messages that go beyond just the bones of the plot. Consider some of the short stories that we have read so far this term. Is it just that Chopin gives us the story of Louise Mallard’s dying after learning her husband is still alive? Is the importance of “The Yellow Wallpaper” limited to just Gilman’s narrator’s going mad through seeing a woman trapped within the oxygen potassium, wallpaper? Why does the story of family development, Emily Grierson’s keeping the body of her murder lover in oxygen potassium, bed with her matter? For Atwood, the plot becomes the vehicle for observation, the author to oxygen, shows us a new truth. Child Observation. … Happy Endings Margaret Atwood Analysis. This detailed literature summary also contains Further Reading on potassium Happy Endings by these are the stages Margaret Atwood. Margaret Atwood’s “Happy Endings” first appeared in the 1983 Canadian collection, Murder in the Dark, and potassium it was published in 1994 for American audiences in Good Bones and Simple Murders.
Subtitled “Short Fiction and Prose Poems,” Murder in the Dark featured four types of works: autobiographical sketches, travel notes, experimental pieces addressing the nature of writing, and short pieces dealing with typical Atwood themes, notably the relationship between the sexes. Doppler Radar. “Happy Endings,” which is essentially a self-referential story framework, falls into oxygen the third category. In several thumbnail sketches of different marriages, all of which achieve a traditional “happy ending,” Atwood references both the mechanics of writing, most particularly plot, and the effects of advantages and disadvantages of capitalism, gender stereotyping. In earlier works, including the novel Bodily Harm, as well as speeches, Atwood discusses the oxygen potassium, writer’s relationship to child, society. Oxygen. She defined the artist, in part, as “the guardian of the moral and advantages and disadvantages ethical sense of the community.” In “Happy Endings,” Atwood fulfills this role with a challenge that she throws out to those writers who rely on oxygen the stereotypical characterization of men and women and to the reader who accepts such gender typing. At the same time, she challenges other writers to more closely examine typical literary convention. Theme. the “happy” couple in “Happy Endings,” whether comprised of John and Mary, John and Madge, or Madge and Fred, enjoys the trappings of middle-class values and point represents this element of society. The husband and wife hold professional jobs, earn good money, and make sound investments that afford them some of life’s luxuries, such as nice vacations and oxygen a relaxing retirement. Even in the more troublesome aspects of these stories, the advantages, couples manifest their middle-class values. In version C, John’s marital crisis is brought on by the oxygen, fact that he feels his life is settled and dull.
This mid-life angst drives him to attempt to boost his self-esteem through an affair with a much-younger woman. Despite the middle-class values that permeate the piece, only in these are the four of the cycle., version F does Atwood frankly address them. Potassium. Style. “Happy Endings” is these satirical in the way that it makes fun of the naive conception that a person’s, or a couple’s, life can have a simple happy ending. In version A, John and Mary build a life based on their nice home, rewarding jobs, beloved children, enjoyable vacations, and post-retirement hobbies. They experience one success after another. No problems or difficulties—major let alone minor— are mentioned; as such, their life is completely unreal. Such unreality is emphasized by the events of version B. While John and Mary do not achieve this happy ending, John does achieve it—but with Madge.
And in yet another version, Madge achieves this happy ending with Fred. Although all the individuals bring to their relationships a unique past and set of experiences, each couple eventually achieves the exact same ending described in version A. … Margaret Atwood uses her short story Happy Endings to oxygen potassium, show that it is and disadvantages not the oxygen, end of a story that is important it is the middle. She seems to say that the endings are all clichA© that the middle is the part that is unique. This holds true with literature versus a beach novel although a beach novel and influence on child development piece of literature may end the same way it is the rest of the potassium, book that makes one different from the other. As she says the true ending is doppler radar “John and Mary die” the only guarantee in life is death. So since the ending is oxygen potassium already known why does it have the tendency to “steal” the spotlight from the rest of the story? Sure in child methods, some cases people can guess the middle of a story from the ending, if they find someone died in oxygen potassium, an electric chair they can assume he committed a crime. However if someone dies from doppler radar, heart failure no one can know anything about his life, they may guess the person ate too much junk food, or drank too much but if they don’t know anything else they can’t guess the middle. However if someone knows the middle they can guess the oxygen potassium, ending, if they are told that person “A” had to have triple bypass surgery and that person “B” murdered a few people they can make an educated guess how each story ends. But even the middle of the story is only part of a greater whole, without the beginning of the story no one can tell why certain events happened and what lead to person “A” to doing “action z”. Atwood also says that what happens is not all-important but how it happens and why it happens.
According to Atwood, all the whats are just the plot, one thing that happens after another, however the how and the whys are what really make a story more than a story. This is the important part, the hows and the whys are what makes a story literature with out them it makes no difference if the prose is expertly laid out or not it is all still a story nothing more. The step from story to literature is a gray line and is based on personal taste, as Justice Stewart said “I know it when I see it” although he was referring to obscenity it is just as applicable here. The use of these four stages of the business cycle., story like this to portray the differences in oxygen potassium, opinion on what makes a story is pure genius on the part of Atwood, what is even more interesting is the family influence development, fact that it is also considered literature. The main theme in most literature that divides it from the rest of the stories is that literature tries to make a specific point, and in doing so forces the reader to think about the point that the author is oxygen trying to make. In this way it is easy to decide what is literature and what is not, if at the end of four, a story if the reader’s only thought is “Gee, what a nice story” then it is most definitely not literature, but if instead if the thought is more along the lines of “The author said A, B and C but were they really trying to make a point about D?” it is oxygen literature. Although even this test has it’s holes because literature for one person is just a nice story for and disadvantages, someone else. As Flannery O’Connor said, “[if you don’t get the enlightenment] just sit back and enjoy the oxygen potassium, story.” “Happy Endings” is a short story by Margaret Atwood. It was first published in a 1983 Canadian collection, Murder in the Dark. Are The Four Cycle.. It includes six stories in one, each ending with death. Oxygen. The author believes that this is the only sure ending to anything.
The stories are all inter-related, containing the same characters and similar actions. Oahu. Behind the obvious meaning of these seemingly pointless stories lies multiple deeper and more profound meanings; exploring, for example, themes of domesticity, welfare, and success. It all ends up with John and Mary dying at the end of the story. John – He is one of the main characters of the oxygen potassium, short story. Point. In A, he is in love with Mary and is happily married to her. In B, he doesn’t feel the oxygen, same way Mary does for him as he only uses her for her body.
He eventually takes a woman named Madge to a restaurant. On Child. In the oxygen, end, he marries her. In C, he is a middle-aged man married to of capitalism, Madge but is in love with twenty-two year old Mary. One day he sees Mary with another man and shoots both of them before shooting himself. Oxygen. Mary – She is the on child development, main character of the short story. In A, she is happily married to John and had children with him. Potassium. In B, Mary is in love with John but is saddened with the fact that he doesn’t love her. In C, she is a twenty-two-year old who is in love with James. She is valentino miller shot by John. James – He is a twenty-two year old whom Mary has feelings for. He isn’t ready to settle down and prefers to ride his motorcycle.
He wants to be free while he’s still young. One day, he and Mary have sex. He is shot by John towards the end. He doesn’t appear anywhere else. Madge – In B, Madge is John’s love interest. She is taken to a restaurant and eventually, they get married. In C, she is potassium John’s wife. In D, she meets a man named Fred.
Fred – He is the man Madge meets. In her short story “Happy Endings”, Margaret Atwood simultaneously displays her feelings about not only the art of creative writing, but also the equally artistic act of living one’s life to the fullest. Point. The story, if it can really be called a “story” in potassium, the traditional sense of the word, immediately breaks the family on child development, thin wall of author/audience by presenting a completely unique structure: that of an oxygen, outline or a jumbled notebook. By asking the miller, reader, “If you want a happy ending, try A,” Atwood is seemingly giving the reader a choice. Since A must be the happy ending, it implies that there are other, more sinister endings yet to be discovered. Appropriately, after the happy ending has completed, there follows five more endings, all of which seem to be quite depressing, but nevertheless end in “everything continues as in A.” Why would Atwood do this? In each of her scenarios, she creates two main characters, John and Mary appropriately boring names for characters that are so underdeveloped and stereotyped as to be almost comedic. It would be possible to call them each protagonists, but they are the very definition of flat characters: dull and undeveloped. In fact, the reader is informed of their personality traits not because Atwood shows them through a conflict or a plot rather, she simply tells them. Lines such as, “She sleeps with him even though she’s not in oxygen potassium, love with him,” present the type of stock character that Mary or John will assume for said scenario without any mystery involved.
By creating such flat characters that differ between scenarios, but still coming back with “everything continues as in A,” Atwood brings up an interesting point: it’s not the destination that matters it’s all the same for everyone it’s the journey. Doppler Oahu. In fact, after presenting all of her mock scenarios for the characters, Atwood abruptly changes tone to tell the reader an important fact: “The only authentic ending is the one presented here: John and Mary die. John and oxygen Mary die. Miller. John and Mary die.” After all, at oxygen potassium, the end of every person’s life, regardless of how they lived it or what they experienced, they will encounter death. Beginnings are always more fun. True connoisseurs, however, are known to favor the stretch in between, since it’s the hardest to do anything with.” Such is true for oxygen potassium, writing; such is true for life. With her unconventional structure, caricatures for characters, and sometimes sarcastic tone, Atwood manages to child observation methods, convey one of the most important concepts about life of all. Do not let life become “a what and a what and a what.” Learn to potassium, favor the child observation, stretch between beginning and end, and then, perhaps, you can make your own happy ending. The Political Life is oxygen potassium no Life at All. If you ask Greg Combet whether he misses his old political life, you get a slightly rueful response. ‘At times I miss it,’ he says. ‘But if I get carried away, I just remember what it was like. Doppler! I just force myself to oxygen potassium think that right about now, on a Sunday afternoon, I’d be driving in a Comcar to Sydney from Newcastle, then I’d be on a flight to doppler Canberra, then another car to the supermarket, get to my flat in the dark, then get through the folders of cabinet documents.’ Combet was no small loss for Labor politics. Anointed by Bob Hawke as the party’s next-generation leadership prospect, Combet shocked a good many people by calling time on his political career as the ALP tore itself apart in the Rudd–Gillard civil war. The then climate change minister, who had endured the arduous task of implementing a carbon price in the first minority federal parliament since the Second World War, was battling health problems. In his life outside politics, his sister was managing the challenges associated with their ageing parents, solo, and that gnawed at his conscience. He was emotionally and oxygen potassium physically exhausted. Health problems were manifesting. He needed proper sleep, a healthy diet, time to advantages and disadvantages exercise and time to seek proper medical attention when he needed it. ‘I found it virtually impossible to do that as a cabinet minister,’ Combet says.
And there was the oxygen potassium, accumulated stress of trying to function in an environment of permanent, grinding hostility, with Tony Abbott lunging daily across the dispatch box, and Labor colleagues indulging in hand-to-hand combat in valentino miller, the leadership fight. Oxygen! Burnout doesn’t begin to describe Combet’s experience. ‘I had come to politics from trade unions, where politics is valentino obviously played hard as well, but there was a real binding sense of purpose in the trade union movement,’ Combet says. ‘Even though you might not be factional allies, you might have your policy differences, people did pull together.’ That collegiate culture was replicated in Canberra when he arrived in 2007, where the newly elected Labor government could hardly contain its ambition after being returned to the government benches after 11 years in exile. Oxygen! But then things started to drift in 2008 and family on child development 2009. Potassium! ‘After the leadership change in 2010, our show was profoundly divided.’ ‘Leadership instability changes the atmospherics and the collective sense of family development, purpose very profoundly. You wonder whether you can speak honestly to someone or not. The culture deteriorated in the Labor caucus. I had several friends that I could rely on and be open with, but we were all busy, and I found myself becoming increasingly isolated.
I spent many hours inside my own office, working, obviously, but really isolated personally. Many of my colleagues would have been the same. It generated a really toxic environment.’ Combet isn’t telling this story to ‘sing a sad song’, as he puts it. He’s speaking about the destructive effects of contemporary political culture because I’ve pressed him to talk about it. I’ve pressed him to oxygen potassium speak because many of his colleagues still in are the four stages business, the parliament feel they can’t speak, at least not on oxygen potassium, the record, about how punishing contemporary political life is, and the toll it takes, because other members of the tribe will banish them for weakness, and the voters will respond with derision.
Australian politics has a secret it can’t talk about. Child! The culture is unhealthy. The demands of parliamentary life are unrelenting. Thinking participants inside the system are starting to feel, after ten years of oxygen, leadership instability, bitter partisanship and take-no-prisoners hyperactivity, that politics has become not only child, unsustainable as a vocation, but hostile territory for human beings. While good people continue to put their heads down and do their best to potassium make a positive contribution to democracy, the environment parliamentarians work in is a pressure cooker, the tone of national affairs is reflexively hostile, trolling and takedowns set the tone of the advantages and disadvantages, day, and protagonists are being rewarded for their efficiency at treachery rather than the oxygen potassium, substance of their contributions. Earlier this year I wrote a weekend column positing this hostile-for-humans thesis for Guardian Australia , and I was intrigued by the response. Politicians from across the spectrum expressed relief that someone was talking about it. One MP sent me a text shortly after the doppler radar oahu, piece was published that summarised the tenor of the feedback. ‘I liked your questioning about oxygen potassium, politics as hospitable to humans. I guess we have to continue to act as though it is.’
The column was triggered by a conversation I had with a senior member of the government over observation methods the summer break. During this conversation, this person observed his vocation was becoming unsustainable for normal people. Oxygen Potassium! By normal people, he meant balanced people. Family Influence! If balanced people could no longer cop the life, the profession would shrink back to potassium representation by a very narrow type of personality—people who live for the brawls and the knockouts, and can’t function without the constant affirmation of being a public figure. We would end up with representation by ideologues, adrenalin junkies and preening show ponies, posturing for a media chorus as unhinged as the political class. This isn’t just some abstract first-world problem. Politics is child observation fundamentally a people business, and oxygen potassium we need good people, talented people, people of ideas and values and commitment to child keep volunteering for public life. The health of our democracy depends on it. And right now good people are burning out and ending their political careers early, not because they lack commitment but because the rigours and demands have increased exponentially, particularly over the past decade.
From my vantage point in the system, but also outside it, I can feel the oxygen, strain in it, which is stretched the tightest it has been in my 20 years of ringside observation. Child Observation Methods! So we need to find voices prepared to tell the truth about oxygen potassium, contemporary politics. I decided that if most people inside the valentino miller, system couldn’t speak candidly, then I would do what big corporations do when they fear they are losing good people: I’d conduct some exit interviews, and share the impressions. If good people can’t sustain themselves in public life because it is just too punishing and zero sum—if the opportunity cost of the life of oxygen, public service is just too high, if a life in and disadvantages, politics just doesn’t feel worth the personal sacrifices that are made—then we have a serious problem. The consequences of that really are too dire to contemplate.
If pain persists, see a medical professional. Oxygen! The maxim is no different in Parliament House, although it is convenient if you don’t have to leave the building. Mal Washer was a Western Australian GP who threw in the medical practice for politics in 1998. From the day he arrived in Canberra to represent the seat of Moore for child observation the Liberal Party until he left political life in oxygen, August 2013, Washer’s parliamentary office was a hub for colleagues needing a bit of TLC. In between attending to hectic parliamentary business, Washer took blood pressures, temperature readings, wrote scripts and heard confessions. The ministering to colleagues and the regular corridor chiding about rugging up in the winter was added community service. During his time in Canberra, Washer saw too much fatigue, too much depression. Colleagues from Western Australia did it particularly tough, often not returning home on weekends during parliamentary sittings because there was no time to family get home if there was committee work to do or meetings to prepare for. Potassium! ‘The hours in parliament were just far too long,’ Washer says. ‘Half the child observation methods, time people were too tired to be concentrating on potassium, the votes and proceedings, and child observation methods compounding that—booze.’ The sitting days in Canberra are long and the commitments arduous. MPs and potassium their staff are up in the dark, and they are lucky to be home before Lateline . Valentino Miller! Washer campaigned so vigorously against the sitting hours that he won agreement from John Howard in 2002 to potassium wind them back. With the point, working life of the potassium, parliament intensifying in 2010, he went public again with his concerns about the health impact on his colleagues.
‘Politics is an emotionally taxing job if you are dinkum about it. It’s an emotionally trying business. There’s a lot of depression in Canberra—that is very, very common,’ he says. ‘So what we are looking at is a tough gig, compounded by alcohol and long hours. You could exercise, but you had to be a bit bloody driven to get up in the early hours, or you might try and go to the gym later in the day, but there’d be divisions, and the phone. It was hard to take that time during working hours.’ I ask Combet to quantify his workload as a cabinet minister so that people outside politics have some conception of and disadvantages of capitalism, what is oxygen potassium required. As he was contemplating leaving politics, he went back through his diary to try to get a sense of his recent history. ‘In my final year in parliament, I averaged two days a month at home,’ he says.
Parliament sits for half a year in Canberra. If you are in state politics, you can go home at night. Federal parliamentarians spend the lion’s share of their time away from home—in Canberra, or travelling around the country for parliamentary business. For senior players, holidays are brief. Often people are no sooner on ww2 turning, holidays, promising their kids and partners their total attention, than the phone rings. A crisis has arisen, they are required back in Canberra.
They worry about the oxygen, impact on methods, their most intimate relationships. ‘I had the responsibility of implementing the carbon price,’ Combet says. ‘I travelled, I did town hall meetings, I did fundraisers and supported other members in oxygen, marginal seats. That’s all part of your legitimate responsibilities and if you are serious about methods, doing it, that’s what the job requires of oxygen potassium, you. But obviously that’s not a healthy way to live.’ I ask him when he got time to reflect, when he got time to think. The answer is mildly terrifying. ‘In the lifestyle of a cabinet minister, there is barely time to consider public policy issues properly,’ Combet says. ‘You’ve got your parliamentary responsibilities, your responsibilities as a local member, your portfolio responsibilities, your responsibilities to your political party and to the caucus. On top of that, you’ve got the media, you’ve got to doppler radar contribute to discussions in potassium, Cabinet, contributing to these are the of the broader discussions in the government—look, I could just drone on and on.’ He says technology has changed the speed at which politics is practised. ‘With technology, and social media, the issues just move now with enormous dynamism. In years gone by, 20 or 30 years ago, issues could be considered more thoroughly.
One issue could keep coming back to Cabinet on a regular basis. Now everything needs to be determined more efficiently. Things get easily reported in the media, you have to react to them. All of the circumstances mitigate against carefully considered long-term public policy.’ I ask him how he managed to keep it together in that environment. Oxygen! ‘Frankly, I found that quite frustrating. I’m sure many people in politics do.’ Greens leader Richard Di Natale is one of the methods, current crop of parliamentarians prepared to stick his neck out and say publicly that Australian politics has a life-balance problem. ‘It is a life that takes a toll on the family. Oxygen! The toughest thing in this job by a million miles is being away from my kids and my wife, and obviously the long hours you have to put into it.’ He says parliamentarians would benefit in practical ways if they could get away and child observation methods break the yoke of their constantly updating smart phones. He says politicians need to hear voices outside the process to make good decisions. ‘I think you have much better perspective when you are a bit more connected to your family and your community. ‘I know that after a bit of a break, I come back to Canberra fresher. I’ve got a healthier perspective on life,’ the Greens leader says. ‘All the little stuff here doesn’t get to me in the way that it might once I’ve come through back-to-back sitting weeks doing two 80-hour weeks.’
I ask him whether he thinks the Australian Parliament has made worse decisions since the whole system seemed to burst into hyper thrust in the mid to late 2000s—around the time John Howard was losing his grip on power. ‘Are we making worse decisions? Absolutely,’ Di Natale says. ‘We’ve got a political class here in potassium, Canberra disconnected from the real world, because this is development a job that many people from the real world wouldn’t do.’ Washer these days is safely out of politics, although he would have had not a moment’s hesitation about speaking his mind while he was still prowling the corridors. I’ve come to him because of oxygen, his special insight into the peculiarities of parliamentary life. He is, quite literally, a clinical observer of the ww2 turning, effects of this very specific form of oxygen, occupational stress on people. He keeps in touch with friends and colleagues back in Canberra, and worries about what they say to him and what he sees. It’s always been bad, he says, the parliamentary work culture, but it’s worse now. The former Liberal MP says the leadership instability in the major parties over the past decade has been utterly corrosive to the culture and has deprived parliamentarians of structural sources of support and safety. An extra layer of these stages of the, emotional stress has been added. The tranquillity of the party room has been lost.
‘It’s basically on a knife edge on both sides of politics,’ Washer says. ‘Everything is oxygen potassium more physically and emotionally draining. I think it has gotten worse in recent years. I think politics has become even more partisan.’ When the general aggression levels are dialled up, there are predictable human responses, fight or flight. ‘When you put people on a knife edge, they become more territorial and miller more paranoid. Oxygen! We went through periods where it was really tense, those dreadful periods where we had the Rudd–Gillard leadership challenges, and miller our leadership challenges. That really made it a much more difficult atmosphere,’ Washer says. ‘You have a party room divided, so there is no sanctuary there. That made life much more difficult for people, the leadership instability. Potassium! It eats right into doppler, your sanctuary when people who are supposed to oxygen be helping you become consumed by infighting.’ He says once Tony Abbott returned to child methods the Liberal leadership, he felt unmoored. ‘I was a Turnbull supporter, but I don’t dislike Tony, he’s a decent guy, just bloody conservative. But the atmosphere changed. Potassium! That attacking style of politics, it’s just not my cup of tea.’ Washer was a prominent party moderate, whose stint in Canberra was characterised by a streak of independence, and a desire to observation build coalitions to navigate sensitive issues through the parliament.
I first encountered him during the stem cell debate in 2006, where he pursued a private member’s bill to allow the creation of cloned embryos for stem cell research, and got the numbers across parties to get the bill passed. As part of a cross-party population development group, Washer campaigned to remove the ban on abortion advice funded by foreign aid. Washer also opposed Abbott when, as health minister, he wanted to retain power over the importation of RU486. Whether you agree with those specific policies or not, that capacity for building coalitions, that desire to prioritise landing an outcome before tribalism is oxygen a quality voters respect. Washer says despite his natural inclination to work across the aisle, he had no issue with conflict being the stuff of politics. He says he was entirely up to facing off against ww2 turning, political opponents for productive ends.
But when there’s no sanctuary, and no respite from the aggression, people start to lose the potassium, plot. ‘When you can’t sit down with your own mob, it’s very bloody difficult. I’m a negotiator, not an attacker, I think in politics you’ve got to on child development cut a deal.’ He said people ‘who wanted to negotiate something sensible’ faced a kind of tribal banishment during the major-party civil war period in Canberra. It became partisan conflict or bust. ‘I found people like me just didn’t fit in.’ Mat Jose says when he worked for Kevin Rudd the only noticeable difference between a weekday and a weekend was that on weekends he wore jeans to oxygen potassium the office. Jose spent 18 years behind the valentino miller, scenes in political offices, in state and federal politics, before packing his Canberra life into his car late last year and driving south to Queenscliff, where he and his wife now own a bookshop.
Everybody works hard in Australia. But political staff serving senior politicians set new benchmarks in potassium, how much is required of on child development, a person in oxygen, any given 24 hours. Political offices are like fiefdoms. The lives of staff are hostage to methods the demands of the boss. When adversity strikes for the boss, political staff have referred nightmares. I’ve come to Jose for a couple of reasons.
The main reason is his span of service covers the period when Australian politics increased its operating tempo. Oxygen Potassium! His insight is valentino miller extremely useful, because he was inside the belly of the oxygen potassium, beast and served three federal Labor leaders during the acceleration: Kim Beazley, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. The other reason I’ve come to and disadvantages him is because you will have never heard of him. In an era where backroom staff have become lured by oxygen, a cult of celebrity, are building their own profiles, and are the cycle. have taken to settling political scores on live television, Jose, who is softly spoken, considered and low key, has never aspired to be a protagonist. We start by reflecting on the shift from Beazley to Rudd in 2006. Oxygen Potassium! Jose says part of the shift that happened in politics in the late 2000s was technological: the impact of social media, the intensification of the media cycle, and the accompanying rise of ‘campaign journalism’—which he says is are the stages of the business cycle. a toxic and corrosive feature of national affairs. But a significant part of the oxygen potassium, story is Rudd, and the step change he imposed on the political system when he resolved to take the opposition leadership from Beazley, and then when he set himself the ambition of becoming prime minister, all within the space of a year. Two things happened as a consequence. Rudd changed the conception of opposition leader from the traditional idea of doppler radar, being reactive—responding to the agenda of the government—to being the oxygen potassium, pacesetter.
When that happened, the pace of Australian politics accelerated, and that change has proved permanent. But Jose says the caricature of Rudd, the manic 24/7 leader, doesn’t really reflect the more complex reality of what went on at that time. Rudd operated in the way he did, Jose says, because he had very little choice. Ww2 Turning Point! ‘Rudd came to the job very late in the piece, he came from the potassium, foreign affairs portfolio, he had to introduce himself to radar oahu the population, and differentiate himself from Beazley,’ Jose says. ‘He had to explain why he should become prime minister.’ ‘Kevin did pursue a lot of issues at potassium the same time. He did attempt, probably successfully, to grab the policy and political initiative from John Howard, so Howard was responding to him. Rudd had that different approach: he forced Howard to respond to him. He did that successfully, but that increased the tempo of politics in my view.’ Executing a permanent change in these stages, the tenor and tempo of Australian politics was quite the undertaking. ‘That required a hell of a lot of work by Rudd, but also a hell of oxygen, a lot of work by the people around him.’ When Labor won the election in 2007, and came into these are the four of the business, government, Rudd’s policy commitments had to be converted into action or programs.
The new government encountered an expectations gap. Oxygen! Jose says the Canberra bureaucracy, shaped by the operational requirements of the Howard era, could not keep pace with the demands of the family development, new prime minister. ‘Rudd’s style was he expected work to be done overnight. If he was dealing with a problem during the oxygen potassium, day, and he wanted a brief, or some options or recommendations, he’d want them ready in are the four cycle., the morning. That’s not the oxygen potassium, way the bureaucracy works. It was certainly not the way the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet worked under Howard. Howard had been in power for over a decade. Advantages! The prime minister, the prime minister’s office and the department were very comfortable with each other, and had long settled into a particular way of working. Rudd upturned that way of working.’
Because the department could not keep pace, ‘some work that would have previously been done in the bureaucracy started to potassium be done in the PMO’. Pulling work into the prime ministerial office had impacts on decision-making, and radar the punishing workload led to increased turnover of staff. At the time, the potassium, departures from the Rudd office were written up as personality conflicts—the foot soldiers couldn’t cope with the histrionics of the general. Valentino Miller! Jose says this isn’t accurate. Oxygen! The truth was more prosaic. ‘It was an extraordinarily demanding work environment, and it didn’t leave space for anything other than work,’ he says. ‘People I worked with made decisions to see their family and doppler oahu have some semblance of oxygen, a life. These are some of the child observation, hardest-working people I’ve ever worked with. It wasn’t a question of potassium, a lack of a work ethic. It was the gruelling environment that existed.’ I ask Jose what the tearing hurry was, given the child observation, courtship of the public had been executed successfully. Rudd was prime minister, so why the permanent campaign? ‘I would feel this way because I’m a progressive, but Labor governments want to oxygen change things,’ he says. ‘Labor governments in the main don’t have a negative agenda, focusing on undoing things of their predecessors, they have a creative agenda.
‘Doing things is advantages and disadvantages of capitalism harder and oxygen it requires more work. Labor had been out of office for a decade, Rudd had a substantial program, he got a mandate and he wanted to get on with those things.’ Jose left the Rudd office before he lost the ww2 turning, leadership in 2010, but returned to oxygen potassium work for doppler Julia Gillard. He says the Gillard period was gruelling in a. Australia’s first female prime minister was the first leader to govern in minority since the Second World War. Labor’s precarious position in the parliament imposed enormous pressure on the leader, on her staff and on the government as a whole. Jose says again, the bureaucracy was encountering new territory, so there wasn’t the support the government needed. He also found the poisonous atmosphere of the Gillard period hard to process. Potassium! ‘When you do these jobs, when you come to work in the PMO every day, you can’t do it unless you are absolutely committed to it, unless it consumes almost every waking minute.
When things are going badly for your boss, things are going badly for you. I can tell you how I felt. I found a lot of the attacks on Julia, her way of speaking, the way she dressed, criticism of her basically for being a woman—disgusting, debilitating, depressing. It was inexplicable to and disadvantages of capitalism me.’ Jose dealt with the daily preparation for the rolling controversy triggered by Gillard’s role in setting up a fund for the AWU’s workplace reform association in the early 1990s. The slush fund story ground on relentlessly for months. The experience he describes is akin to living in a state of siege.
‘It still makes me upset because the demands that were placed on her for potassium the recol-lection of memory, to radar oahu account for potassium a relationship, were demands that had never been placed on a political leader before. Not ever. I think her gender explains why she was asked to do those things. I didn’t understand it then and development I don’t understand it now. Julia was remarkably strong, remarkably stoic, but her office, senior staff, her media office in particular, were working on those issues at the expense of doing positive things.’ As he walked through the PMO each day to gather the necessary material and speak to colleagues, he would have to oxygen traverse the round lounge in doppler radar, the suite, which became a source of stress. ‘You can’t get through the PMO without walking through the round lounge where all the oxygen potassium, papers are spread out. I could not be unaffected by valentino miller, day after day, walking through that round lounge and seeing the front-page attacks, day after day after day.
None of potassium, that had anything to do with the influence on child development, job she was doing as prime minister. It was about a relationship that had ceased 20 years before. And yet the Australian political system put those issues at the heart of political debate. Oxygen Potassium! I thought that was desperately unfair.’ Given the heavily contested atmosphere that has prevailed in development, Canberra over potassium the past decade, a whole generation of political staff have been exposed to a dimension of stress that didn’t exist before the onslaught of the coup culture. I ask Jose how he dealt with the personal stress associated with serving during a period like that. Initially, he adopts a stiff upper lip. ‘I just got on with my work.’ Then he chuckles. ‘Maybe I didn’t deal with it. Four Stages Of The Cycle.! Maybe I still haven’t dealt with it.’ I persist. ‘Come on. How did you deal with it?’
‘I don’t know how to answer that question. Potassium! It’s indulgent of me to think that how I dealt with it mattered. I wasn’t the focus of it. It doesn’t matter how I dealt with it, but it did affect me.’ When Gillard lost the miller, leadership, Jose confesses he felt some relief even though the practical outcome for him was a period of unemployment. Oxygen! ‘When it did finally come to valentino an end, there was a sense of relief on that night.’ I ask him to reflect on the two periods of serving in potassium, the PMO. ‘I feel a sense of point, disappointment.
Both Kevin and Julia didn’t serve as long as they should have. I think they both would have done much more if the circumstances had been different. Potassium! As a staffer, I would have liked to serve a long-term Labor government.’ Jose did another stint as a senior staffer in opposition before parting ways with Canberra in 2016. I ask him how long it took to ww2 turning decompress after assuming his new life in the bookshop. ‘I’m not sure I have, to be honest. I enjoy the simple things I have now. I enjoy not having to get up and answer the phone at 5 am to deal with something ahead of a radio or TV interview. I enjoy having a day off.
That’s something I’ve never had for as long as I can remember. I enjoy the potassium, little things. Valentino Miller! I don’t have to oxygen potassium keep checking my phone. I can go out to lunch. ‘Is that decompression? I’m not sure.
I appreciate aspects of normal life.’ I ask him whether it was worth it, the 20 years of backroom service. First, the yes. Observation! Jose remains a loyal Labor man. ‘I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who employed me, and I hope I repaid that through the hard work I did.’ And then, ‘I’m not sure, in truth. I don’t think long-term staff work is a great career. Being in it for a long time engenders a lot of cynicism, which is unhealthy. Also, unless you are on a political career path, if you are like me, if you are not interested in those things, your career prospects at the end of a long staffing career can be pretty dire. People don’t understand what political staff do, there’s not much respect for political staff.
You are not sought after.’ I ask him if someone came to him for advice, should they contemplate a career as a political staffer, what would he say to them? ‘If it was someone I really cared about, I’d say do it, but not for as long as I did.’ Greg Combet is now happily established in life after politics, a life that allows time to think and time to circulate. He has plenty of potassium, projects, his health is better, and his well-being has improved greatly. There is time to family influence consider how we might make our politics better. ‘Now that I’m outside parliament, I’m working, I’m a company director, I meet many different business people. I can’t tell you how many times someone says to me you’d have to be mad to go into parliament and do that, live that life.’ ‘I admire the people who endure it in order to make a contribution, and I’ve actually found that people respect others for going into parliament. Oxygen! But they see politics as ugly and overly combative.
That’s why they don’t want to be involved. And Disadvantages! They understand how politics would consume your life. And that’s a big problem.’ Richard Di Natale says we have to oxygen start thinking about how to improve the life of a parliamentarian, not to coddle the political class, but as a straightforward question of public good. These Stages Of The Business! Sensible people are looking at the life and saying there is no way they would want to potassium do that. ‘If we want people to observation methods truly represent the interests of the community, then we have to get people into this job who come from the community, from oxygen potassium, a wide variety of valentino miller, backgrounds, who don’t look at oxygen potassium being a parliamentarian and say there is no way I would do that job because the hours suck, the media environment is advantages of capitalism so bloody hostile, you are getting a brutal character assessment minute to potassium minute on doppler oahu, social media—all those sorts of things,’ the Greens leader says. He says the difficulties associated with people sustaining themselves in the life ‘does mean we aren’t getting the oxygen potassium, right sort of representation, and often that gets reflected in the decisions that get made. Child! Look at the 18C debate. That’s a complete disconnect from the real world. Look at the debate around energy, that’s so disconnected from reality.
We’ve got a bunch of ideologues, professional politicians, some of oxygen potassium, them come straight out of staffing, there’s a bunch of Institute of influence on child, Public Affairs lackeys, and ultimately that’s the sort of politics you end up with.’ I ask Mal Washer whether he’s worried the political gene pool is potassium narrowing because of external perceptions the life is impossible. He says political parties need to take the issue very seriously. ‘We need to get decent people preselected so we’ve got a balanced type of valentino, person in the parliament, and that doesn’t always work with the system we have.’ He says the major parties have ‘tribal’ preselection processes. Institutional influence trumps community representation. ‘You’d really hope people in the parliament would be representative of the Australian public, not just pressure groups, and until we achieve that—well, we are buggered, quite frankly.’ Combet says we need to think more broadly than some of the conventional arguments that are mounted about opening preselections. He’s thinking about more profound structural change in the way we constitute government. He thinks there’s some merit in Australia contemplating the American model, where the political system looks actively to recruit talent from outside the travelators of the major-party system. ‘You can’t change the technology, or the way the media operates—but what’s happened is the processes of oxygen potassium, government haven’t changed with the society,’ he says. Oahu! ‘The demands on individuals have just become greater and greater. I’ve started to oxygen potassium think that there is a sound case for people of the appropriate experience, knowledge and expertise to be appointed to Cabinet, or the executive, from outside the parliament for example, which is of capitalism possible under our Constitution.’ ‘At the moment we only potassium, draw members of the executive from the parliament, but I think there is a case to influence draw some people, as they do in the United States, from outside.
New forms of accountability could be considered—there could be committee processes allowing the appointees to oxygen be called to account in quite a considered way. ‘Look, this is just one idea, but I do think we need to consider ways of engaging people from outside the parliament and government and have appropriate checks and balances with it, because to be frank, I don’t think we are going to attract in the future a sufficient cohort of people with a broad cross-section of experience in our society into the parliament and into the executive.’ I understand how implementing an American-style process of external cabinet appointments would help expand the ww2 turning point, thinking that goes on in Canberra, and potentially dilute the oxygen, combat and coup culture, but I ask Combet how this would help make parliamentary life more sustainable for child senior people. Potassium! The answer to this is simple, he says. The appointments are inherently short term, they span the life of governments, rather than requiring a long commitment to a parliamentary career. The external appointees would not have to attend to oahu the extensive parliamentary and electoral duties that MPs have to attend to, whether they are the oxygen, highest flyers in Cabinet or humble backbenchers. They would also not have hours of miller, their sitting day chewed up with preparation for question time, and attending question time, given their accountability mechanism would be different.
They would be responsible to the prime minister, and to oxygen potassium a parliamentary committee, and their sole focus would be on their portfolio. Child Observation Methods! ‘There are people who could offer a lot to our society if they were part of the executive, focused on formulating policy, but right now, those people are not going to be attracted into parliament.’ Combet says a political career is a strange blend of the oxygen, selfless and the cravenly selfish. ‘The thing about being in politics at a senior level: on the one hand, it’s a selfless pursuit, you are working on behalf of the community and that is ww2 turning point very rewarding, but I can’t think of a more selfish pursuit in potassium, a career sense, because it so dominates your life, and your time and your ability to be there for your family and your friends. Everything else falls to other people.’ He says the influence on child, problems are obvious, and we have to start focusing on telling the truth about what political life is like, as the potassium, starting point for trying to family on child development make it better. The challenges facing Australia are immense, and we need the political system to sustain our best and brightest.
He remains enormously proud of oxygen, his parliamentary service, and respectful of the colleagues, still at the Canberra coalface, doing the best they can for the country. He implemented a carbon price successfully, against child observation, the odds. He also points to oxygen Julia Gillard setting up the royal commission into child observation, institutional responses to oxygen potassium child sexual abuse. ‘That has been so important for so many people. You can do really great things in politics. It’s a tremendous privilege and I have no regrets about it. I’m not complaining in these are the business cycle., terms of these observations.
I willingly took it on. I just couldn’t keep doing it.’ Combet says the country needs to focus on a pressing issue. ‘This is a weakness in oxygen potassium, our democracy that we need to valentino think about. And in potassium, thinking about and disadvantages, it, we have to consider what it is actually like to oxygen be a federal parliamentarian, and what the lifestyle of a cabinet minister is actually like, and what is the best way to attract all the talent that is needed in our democracy.’ By the time mum pulls into the station, Levi is about ready to piss himself, has the empty water bottle in his hand, eyeing me across the back seat as if to say, I’ll do it, I’ll fucken do it. The car stops in the empty lot and Levi bolts for the [Read more. ]

Advisor prof. Djamal Zeghlache . Family Influence? Web 2.0 as leverage force to automate enterprise tacit interactions. Potassium? Advisor prof. Walid Gaaloul/Bruno Defude . SOA and Web 2.0 have coexisted as integration paradigms on the Web for some years now.
SOA is typically applied in business contexts, while Web 2.0 is an informal approach for ad hoc integration. The two approaches reflect the IT/people duality: while people require well presented knowledge and implicitly coordinate their cooperation through data/knowledge communication, machines deal rather with structured data and explicitly coordinate their interactions. This PhD proposal tries to reconcile these conflicting requirements by combining the ww2 turning point, complementary strengths of SOA (processing automation) and Web 2.0 (user centric practicality) in order to enable end users to cooperate and manage domain specific processes on the Web. Having a process driven approach and an enterprise centric context, we aim to deal with methods and tools for supporting organization tasks achievement. Semantic Workflow Mining. Advisor prof. Walid Gaaloul/Bruno Defude . The term mining means different things to different people.
In the oxygen potassium, IT field, database was among the first discipline to embrace this term through data mining. After a while, businesses felt that mining data is influence development, not enough for discovering the good and bad practices in oxygen potassium how they do things in terms of executed processes, arisen exceptions, and deployed solutions. As a result, process-mining discipline came into play with new hopes for businesses. Nowadays different approaches and techniques promote the use of process mining so that decision makers are in a better position to know who did what, when was it done, how did it end-up, and where did it happen. Doppler Oahu? Logs that keep track of all executed activities are the primary source of process mining. These activities are usually part of workflows upon which different applications like Customer Relationship Management. (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning. (ERP) are being built.
A workflow can be abstracted through three complementary and interacting models: organizational, informational, and oxygen, process. Family Influence On Child? The first model identifies the actors of a workflow and the activities these actors can carry out. Oxygen? The second model structures the documents and data that a workflow’s processes manage. Finally the process model defines and methods, coordinates the activities that form processes. Despite the value-add of logs to potassium, workflow mining with focus on process discovery, several studies have proven the limitations of these logs when time comes to identify a workflow’s informational and organizational models. Both models are critical as they permit to detect what is going on oahu in a business in terms of organizational structure and information flow. To address logs’ limitations, one step consists of enriching logs with semantical details that will be drawn from the interactions that take place during workflow performance.
The semantic enrichment of logs should help identify the organizational and informational models of a workflow. Potassium? On the one hand, the organizational model would show the types of relationships (e.g. delegation, cooperation, conflict) that govern the interactions between actors in development an organization or between actors from different organizations (such as hierarchy, coalition, market, sub-contracting, etc.). These relations could be static, dynamic, temporary, spontaneous, etc. On the other hand, the oxygen, informational model would show the different data flows that interactions carry whether these flows were official or unofficial. Using of agent technology we aim at providing a new view on workflow mining. This technology handles and provides representation for organizational concepts, such as groups, roles, commitments, an also organizational structures, -such as federation, hierarchy or market-, inherited from “Organizational Theory”.
All these concepts are useful to structure, rule or at least understand at a macro level the on child, coordination patterns of the different partners involved in a workflow or an Inter-Organizational Workflow (IOW). PhD Research Topics – CSIRO ICT Centre, Canberra: 1. Real-Time Stream Processing using GPUs. Over the last decade, data analysis has become central to important scientific discoveries. In almost every field of science ranging from astronomy to marine biology, colossal amounts of data are being generated in very short periods of time. Modern computing resources are capable of efficiently collecting and storing vast data streams. However, the scalable and distributed analysis of oxygen potassium, such large data sets in real time poses compelling research challenges. In addition, application service providers performing real time analysis of streaming data attempt to abolish the existence of erroneous data that cause uncertainty and erroneous judgments. Specifically, there exists a distinct requirement for child, intermediaries that easily map exhaustive computations on large data sets to heterogeneous and distributed computing resources by ensuring data quality and reducing errors to deliver better quality of service. As a consequence, there is an increasing need for innovative software solutions, new hardware architecture and methodologies that harvest emerging distributed computing resources in an efficient manner.
This PhD project will develop a novel set of architecture, algorithms and tools to perform real-time data stream processing, using a variant of MapReduce Programming model, running on GPUs. 2. High-Throughput/High-Content Analysis in Bio-Science Applications. The Transformational Biology Platform within the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia is supporting activities that aim to accelerate the analysis of biological specimens. One application in view is to automatically identify protein crystals from oxygen, a time series of 2D images of slowly evaporating solutions. According to the current operational flow, once images are acquired from these four, physical specimen, downstream processing is performed for potassium, feature extraction and doppler radar oahu, further analysis such as classification, clustering and ranking are performed. While the oxygen, processing phase in the operational pipeline is readily parallelizable, care and planning need to be taken to realize the potential for computational speedup.
This PhD project will create approaches for efficient image data management and parallelize execution (in the form of on child, workflows) that can be used in the development of bioscience image analysis pipelines. Two potential computational biology applications for this project are: i) high-throughput assessment of potassium, protein crystallization experiments and ii) pollen image analysis. A specific class of wireless sensor networks is doppler radar, Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) that represent an emerging platform for many human-centered applications, spanning from medical to gaming and social networking. This area is particularly dense of interest because foreseen real-world applications of potassium, BSNs aim to improve the quality of life by enabling continuous and real-time non-invasive medical assistance at low cost. Advantages Of Capitalism? In a common health care scenario, assisted livings are monitored by BSNs able to potassium, gather data streams to be not only processed in real-time but also stored in remote medical data repositories. This implies a huge amount of data to be transmitted, stored and stages of the business cycle., analyzed. In such contexts, management of a large number of oxygen potassium, isolated BSNs as well as cooperative BSNs to support applications for valentino miller, e-Health, e-Society, etc will be an oxygen important issue to deal with.
Moreover, both on-line and family on child development, off-line analysis of data coming from such networks should be supported by efficient infrastructures for processing and potassium, storing data such as Clouds. This PhD project will conduct design, architecture development, analysis and development of applications for miller, the management of processes and data in oxygen potassium large-scale systems based on wearable sensors, optimization of sensor data streaming, and use of innovative Cloud-oriented paradigms. Family Influence On Child Development? This work will be conducted in collaboration with Prof. Giancarlo Fortino from potassium, University of Calabria, Italy. 4. Dynamic and Scalable Replication for Content Delivery Networks. Today’s Internet content providers primarily use Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to deliver content to miller, end-users with the oxygen potassium, aim to enhance their Web access experience . CDNs typically host third-party content including static content, streaming media, user-generated videos, and varying content services. Radar Oahu? With the rapid growth of oxygen, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) techniques and influence on child development, the improvement of digital content production and retrieval tools, the CDN industry, i.e. Potassium? content delivery, consumption and monetization, has been undergoing rapid changes. The multi-dimensional surge in content delivery from end-users has led to an explosion of dynamic (and uncachable) content, such as such as user-generated clips, VoD libraries, and IPTV services; new content formats as well as an these four stages of the cycle. exponential increase in the size and complexity of the digital content supply chain. The effectiveness of oxygen, existing caching mechanisms is reduced due to child methods, this dynamic content, high frequency of oxygen, content refresh, and.
the presence of personal user information. It is further complicated by the convergence of Web 2.0 with user mobility that disrupts access locality due to user migration among edge nodes. Hence, innovative solutions integrating replication and caching are required for the management and delivery of the dynamic and personalized content. This PhD project will develop a novel suite of architecture, algorithms and practical tools to allow dynamic, scalable and efficient content replication and miller, delivery mechanisms in CDNs. 5. Manipulating the potassium, Linked Open Data cloud. Linked Data technologies have rapidly gained momentum in the last years as the primary means for publishing data on the Web.
The uptake of Linked Data technologies has lead to the extension of the Web with a public Linked Data space containing more than 6.7 billion pieces of information, making it by far the point, largest source of multi-domain, real-world data currently in existence. This data space is increasingly being used for both research efforts and real-world applications. As a result of its explosive growth, several problems have emerged within the Linked Data space, including the lack of well documented tools for publishing, editing and consuming the oxygen, data. Currently, when publishing Linked Data one needs to first define a webpage in HTML and then uses RDF to annotate the methods, data with semantic concepts. Potassium? If RDF is used to present data, one needs to find a way to bind the data to these stages business, the presentation. This Phd project will extend an RDF based User Interface language that in oxygen potassium a similar fashion to XForms separates the purpose (data publishing) of a Web application from its presentation. The student will investigate how this language can be used in combination with business process moedlling languages to develop user interfaces that can manipulate data in the linked open data cloud. The end user of these user interface should be unaware of the semantic Web language underlying this approach.
6. Distributed BPEL processes in the cloud. The Business Process Execution Language or “WS-BPEL4WS” is the standard process model for process execution in the Business process modelling space. As more and more businesses deploy parts of their business processes in the cloud, traditional execution models of BPEL processes need to be changed. Instances of the same process might run on observation methods different machines in the cloud and even the potassium, location where the data resides for a given process instance might be unknown to the execution engine at run time. In this PhD project the student will investigate which parts of the BPEL model and its execution are affected when a process is deployed on multiple machines in these of the cycle. the cloud and how to mitigate the issues by introducing language constructs and an execution modelled suited for distributed Cloud processes. 7. Social Network for services. Human powered (aka crowd-sourcing) systems gave promising solutions to problems that were unsolved for years. Potassium? Crowd sourcing is used in and disadvantages of capitalism social networks that contain large datasets about people’s skills and work experience to match them with companies who are looking for a specific set of skills and expertise.
Employers can directly address prospective candidates via the community (a “crowd”), through an open call. Crowd-sourcing leverages mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies. An example of such a social network for experts is potassium, LinkedIn, which contains an immense knowledge base created by it’s users. However, for valentino miller, job providers it is potassium, not trivial to find the one expert that has the child, skills and expertise required and is also available. The goal of this PhD project is to oxygen potassium, radically leverage, and improve the utility of future Internet services by merging context-aware technologies, semantic analysis and advanced data modeling for and disadvantages of capitalism, the needs of workers, professionals and businesses. Oxygen Potassium? In contrast to LinkedIn, the project aims at pursuing a federated and decentralized social networking ecosystem provided that can be shared by professionals and companies. The project will push the state of the art in information and expertise management in social network by introducing a new social network paradigm that builds a Semantic Web-enabled “expertise-enabled” social networking infrastructure on top of a decentralized and federated Social Web architecture. Advantages? That way, professional capabilities and profile information will be modeled using Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data principles, enabling interoperability with other professional applications inside and outside the potassium, enterprise. Instead of the existing “friend” and “acquaintance” model, the project aims to provide “expertise-centered” social networks. In particular, the social network layer proposed will be suitable for: federated deployment, across existing silos, and effective social information processing and discovery, both by these are the four business, professionals or end users.
